Bird on a Wire acrylic paint on cradled wood panel with collaged papers and pen 12 x 12 The symbolism in my piece involves a bird, a ladder, and a woman. The bird on a wire sitting over the woman represents the tension between freedom and confinement. The thin wire suggests vulnerability. The image of the woman holding flowers suggests vulnerability and beauty. But because she is wearing a hard hat she also represents empowerment which shows beauty and strength coexisting. The ladder is there to show the rising or courage of both the bird and woman to break free. I like using the imagery of ladders in most of my work. In this piece, in combination with the wire, it supports the meaning of the delicate balance in life. Tropical Fugue fiber art 64 x 61 Tropical Fugue was inspired by memories of Bali. Songbird serenades, expansive skies, and fleeting, cherished moments. My process is rooted in trust and a willingness to surrender control. The real magic unfolds in the midst of making. I embrace spontaneity and the unexpected, allowing fabrics to speak and respond to one another in a vibrant, evolving conversation. For this piece, I began by assembling organic fragments of varying shapes and sizes into intuitive motifs. These forms gradually suggested bird-like presences, emerging as focal points. Set against a white background, I arranged and rearranged these silhouettes, creating rhythm and movement. Surrounding borders were added to frame and contain their energy. Freehand machine quilting became the final layer, adding depth, cohesion, and texture. Each fabric carries its own history, gathered from distant places, its story stitched into the whole. Eve with Daughters mixed media: oil on linen and scrim, sculpture wire 120 x 60 I worked instinctively on this piece draping the raw linen which took the form of a female figure. I saw that it took on the image in my mind of Eve with her daughters. I incorporated sculpture wire to inside hidden seems. My objective was to show Eve passing down knowledge to her daughters. Leonore acrylic paint and ink on canvas 22 x 18 Leonore Emma Ponton, 1902-1996, my great-grandmother on my father’s side, is a figure I remember only in brief but vivid impressions from childhood. My dad often told us that she had Native ancestry, and as a child, that idea felt both meaningful and mysterious. In a family of light skin and blue eyes, she stood apart—her olive complexion, dark brown eyes, and jet-black hair giving her a presence that felt both striking and quietly powerful. I may never know with certainty the full truth of her heritage, but over time I’ve come to appreciate that identity can live as much in story and feeling as in documented fact. I’m drawn to the symbolism of the oriole, a bird some Native traditions associate with the sun—bright, warm, and full of life. In other cultural interpretations, orioles are seen as messengers, moving between the spiritual and physical worlds. Spiritual Journey acrylic on canvas 40 x 30 Spiritual Journey arises from my own meditation practice and the inner landscapes I’ve traveled in silence. The seated figure reflects the stillness I return to, yet the luminous spiral at the core mirrors the movement I feel within—a quiet unfolding that guides me toward deeper truth. This spiral became the heart of the painting, a symbol of the soul’s path as I have experienced it. The serpent-like current ascending through the body echoes the sensations of awakening and renewal that surface in meditation. As it transforms into flame at the crown, it speaks to the moments of clarity that come only through surrender. The gold and white wings surrounding the figure evoke the unseen protection and grace I’ve sensed along my own spiritual path. This work invites viewers to pause and recognize their own evolving light, just as I continue to recognize mine. Stardust encaustic on cradled panel 10 x 10 For me the experience of encaustics is very focused and feels a bit dangerous—you have to keep the temperature just right so it doesn’t overheat and yet there is still a flow in application. I feel like I’m joyously painting with volcanic lava. As I worked on this piece it started to suggest its theme was the night sky and our expanding universe. The Weight of Memory graphite and charcoal on canvas 32 x 24 “The Weight of Memory” was inspired by the quiet, interior space a musician enters when sound and recollection overlap. I kept thinking about how the body remembers—how hands on an instrument can carry decades of practice, longing, and unspoken history. Rather than depicting a specific narrative, I wanted the figure and guitar to hold that layered, almost tactile sense of memory: weighty yet ephemeral, grounded yet always shifting. Working in graphite and charcoal allowed me to stay close to that feeling. I began with careful drawing from observation to honor the structure of the body and instrument, then slowly built up layers of marks, erasures, and re-drawing. I focused on the relationship between the hands and the worn surface of the guitar, using shifts in edge, texture, and value to suggest how some memories stay sharply in focus while others dissolve into shadow. I have been inspired by nature from a young age and that influence colors my work with optimism, mood and color. I reconstruct the textures that feel familiar and insert them into each piece. Sarasota Circuit digital art on HD Meta 38 x 34 “Sarasota Circuit” explores structure as a responsive system shaped by environment. Rectilinear forms and linear pathways establish a controlled framework, while intersections and extensions suggest continuous movement rather than fixed endpoints. The composition reads as an open circuit—nodes connect, redirect, and adapt without full closure. The work draws from the principles of the Sarasota School of Architecture, including the influence of Paul Rudolph, where modernist structures are defined by light, climate, and spatial flow. The yellow field functions as both ground and illumination, activating surrounding forms and reinforcing a sense of atmosphere rather than containment. Surface weathering and overdrawn marks register time within the system—evidence of adjustment rather than erosion. Color operates as signal, guiding movement through areas of density and release. Nesting linen, watercolor paper, acrylic, and archival glue 15 x 13.5 When I begin an artwork, I often use a method to stimulate my subconscious. It is a unique, reductive method I use for collages. I begin by painting patterns, textures, lines and spatters on a large sheet of watercolor paper or linen. I look at the painted surface, add more where needed, until images start to appear, waiting to be liberated from the chaotic background. Then I carve out the objects with a knife. It’s almost like drawing with a knife. When I have enough, I can start assembly, piece by piece until their shapes are fully realized. I use these instead of the found-images traditionally used for collages, such as photos, magazine pictures, etc. I can also adapt a similar version of this technique to canvases, without cutting. Kip's Angel liquid acrylic, watercolor, transfer on canvas 23 x 20 An image was selected from a graveyard photo series captured by this artist then used as a transfer and combined with painting (artist's competency) on canvas. It was part of an Angel series executed over a few years during severe personal physical events. Angels were always solicited during that time and were always there for me and still are. As I was talking with the proprietor I noticed there was an old photo of the store with an inset photo of a man which I was told was the owner's father. I asked if I could photograph Venturinis holding the photo to document his family's long history in Venice. I wanted to reflect that sense of not knowing in the woman’s eyes and in the surrounding space that shifts and flows, in changing shapes and colors. The woman is open to what is present, noticing the beauty around her and allowing different feelings to arise without trying to define them. I used radiant colors to create a sense of movement and atmosphere, while deeper greens bring in a connection to nature and a feeling of grounding. Global Series - Bear Hugs ink on paper 18 x 18 Global Series is meant as a gentle reminder that humanity is not separate from nature but a part of it. In Bear Hugs, polar bears are portrayed in a circular format to represent life on Earth and a loving embrace. The red dot represents the Sun, warmth and the need to stop and consider the effect humanity has on the natural world. This is a diptych of serigraphs so the pricing is for the pair. Serigraphy, commonly known as silkscreen printing, is the hand-made printmaking mode. The most important part of the process for Zimmerman is making great drawings. She understands this and creates her drawings, not only as works of art on their own, but thinking about how they will translate into serigraphs. The Ridge in Mist oil on panel 6 x 6 This painting began from a photograph I took while hiking in dense mist, where everything from the trees to myself, was soaked and quietly dripping. Along the ridge, a lone tree stood resilient against the haze, its presence both subtle and striking. Something about its quiet strength drew me in and compelled me to paint the scene. Strips of black, white, and gray carry varied textures and mark-making—ghosted prints, scraped surfaces, and stenciled motifs—that create a tactile field of repetition and interruption. Small, deliberate red accents act like visual punctuation, pulling the eye back and forth across the plane and breaking the monochrome rhythm with moments of heat and pause. The work investigates the dialogue between order and improvisation: geometric alignment and repeated patterning hold the composition together, while unexpected textures and irregular edges introduce vitality and tension. Just Breathe... photograph digitally enhanced 12 x 12 I started working with a light box when I was diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder and I found sitting in front of a light box helped my mood and sleep. I started creating temporary collages and photographing and sharing them on line. I called them luminaries. I work with cut out figures and cut out designs, still on a light box, striving for balance, looking for harmony of shape and color. This piece is part of a series: 'Paper Dolls/Light Ladies, 2026. Gaia cashmere, silk sari, paper, pencil, cotton 30 x 15 Inspired by the green silk sari fabric wrapped around soft cashmere cord and weaved into the Irish Knot Embroidery, where there is no beginning and no end. The title Gaia came naturally. It turned out to be a scientific hypothesis that the living and nonliving components of earth function as a single system. Glimpses of Eliza encaustic wax with writing, photograph of face, and embedded flowers on wood cradled panel 11 x 9 My great-great grandmother Eliza had her world collapse in 1863 with the death of her husband and loss of their plantation. In this image of a young woman, I see a serenity in Eliza's young face and glimpses of the dreams she held. I've included bits of the love letters from her husband John. Then I've surrounded her with real flowers and leaves, growing upward as she must have with marriage and children. Here, I see a mystery that transcends time and place. The shapes were inspired by pictographic images made by many different indigenous peoples but I have taken symbolic shapes and meanings, and transformed them into my own language. At first, the designs may appear chaotic, but they are not. They are intense meditations, meant to calm the soul.They are receptacles for positive energy. The designs are contained within a circle, a mandala, a protective shield, an armor for life’s journey. My Life Shields are connected to the cosmos and do have universal meaning. Victorian Bride (The Gilded Age, 1870) collage w/ hand-cut found paper, NY Times, ink 13 x 10 Olivia Langdon married American writer and humorist Samuel Clemons in Elmira, NY, in 1870. Together they had 3 daughters, including Susy, Clara and Jean. Their son Langdon died of diphtheria in 1872 at the age 19 months. Her husband Mark Twain wrote under his pen name in their gazebo in Hartford, CT. She was a faithful, judicious, and painstaking editor for her husband. Olivia was also a proponent of women's rights, and surrounded herself with influential women including educator Julia Beecher and Isabella Beecher Hooker, abolitionist and suffragette. Pink Sands mixed media on paper 7 x 9.5 This artwork is inspired by the freedom and happiness I feel near the ocean. Every summer my Mom would load myself and my siblings into our Aspen station wagon and drive 12 hours straight to my grandparents 4 room beach cottage near Boston. By leaving my Dad behind to work, we could all relax. I have many happy memories of beach vacations with family and friends throughout my life. The Great Egret sculpture 18 x 9 x 10 I love biking along the Potomac River and watch all the wildlife including eagles, ospreys, blue herons and especially the Great Egret which migrates every year to the shores of Alexandria and along the Potomac tributaries. The Great Egret was carved directly into the stone, sanded and polished. It is an abstract shape focused on the essence of the bird itself and its graceful motion. After the sewage spill that took place earlier this year, this sculpture comes as a reminder to keep the Potomac clean and healthy not only for our drinking water but for the very rich wildlife that depends on it.. I had used dripping extensively in my large Erosion paintings, in which the drips formed veils of colors. Dripped onto a smaller format, the columns of paint looked like trees instead of forming a veil. Thus were born the Forest Inscapes, explorations in color which have evolved to reflect the seasons in the forest around my studio.
