Tropical Fugue
fiber art
64 x 61
Tropical Fugue was inspired by memories of Bali. Songbird serenades, expansive skies, and fleeting, cherished moments. My process is rooted in trust and a willingness to surrender control. The real magic unfolds in the midst of making. I embrace spontaneity and the unexpected, allowing fabrics to speak and respond to one another in a vibrant, evolving conversation.
For this piece, I began by assembling organic fragments of varying shapes and sizes into intuitive motifs. These forms gradually suggested bird-like presences, emerging as focal points. Set against a white background, I arranged and rearranged these silhouettes, creating rhythm and movement. Surrounding borders were added to frame and contain their energy. Freehand machine quilting became the final layer, adding depth, cohesion, and texture.
Each fabric carries its own history, gathered from distant places, its story stitched into the whole.
