Glimpses of Eliza
encaustic wax with writing, photograph of face, and embedded flowers on wood cradled panel
11 x 9

My great-great grandmother Eliza had her world collapse in 1863 with the death of her husband and loss of their plantation. In this image of a young woman, I see a serenity in Eliza’s young face and glimpses of the dreams she held. I’ve included bits of the love letters from her husband John. Then I’ve surrounded her with real flowers and leaves, growing upward as she must have with marriage and children. Here, I see a mystery that transcends time and place.
