  • Hemara Welcomes the day Digital Painting: Micro-Pointillism, Corel Painter 20 x 18
As an Artist, I can weave together the threads of myth and reality while exploring the deep, multifaceted nature of the female psyche. With a unique approach that blends traditional inspiration with cutting-edge technology, My artwork serves as a bridge between the past and the present, the tangible world and the dreamlike. My pointillist pieces, created using a computer painting program, breathe life into my powerful creations, capturing the inner stories of women and the emotional landscapes they navigate. A key influence on my artwork is the traditional beauty of Japanese woodblock prints and the ethereal quality of pre-Raphaelite paintings. These historical works saturate her pieces with a sense of timelessness. Yet, my choice of a computer program as my primary art medium places me firmly in the realm of contemporary art-making. By embracing modern technology, I reinterprets these classical influences through a digital lens, creating works that feel both nostalgic and forward-thinking. At the heart of my artwork lies a fascination with the interplay of fantasy and truth. My creations speak to a realm where stories and symbols come alive, where ancient tales are reimagined through a state-of-the-art viewpoint. The result is a body of work that honors the past while challenging contemporary perceptions of femininity, identity, and self-expression. Through my art, I offer a playful yet profound exploration of the desires and dreams that shape the female experience.

  • The Cloisters Museum in Shadow and Light Watercolor 30 x 22
For those of us fortunate enough to live in Upper Manhattan NYC, Fort Tryon Park is our own mini Central Park and also something more. With the Cloisters Museum serving as its "castle on a hill", the Park with its lush landscaping in the same English Romantic style as Central Park, but with sweeping views of the Hudson River and the Palisades of NJ beyond, Fort Tryon Park is a place that brings out the best of us. It is a little-known gem, a neighborhood treasure that reminds us that we can daily experience renewed awe in its beauty, find calm in its idealized version of nature, delight in its wildlife, and take heart in how we and our neighbors and visitors alike smile, say hello, and find common cause in our love for the place. In the daily stresses of urban life that can sometimes bring out the worst in its residents, the Park is a place where we access a different side of life, a place we all agree that we treasure despite other disagreements. And in so doing, it is a place that prompts us to be a better, nobler version of ourselves.

  • Earth and Aether Oil 24 x 16 x .5
Romm's art examines the divine intelligence permeating all existence, employing a visual language rich in light, color, and symbols that transcends the mundane and draws viewers into supernatural realms. Romm's creative process-guided by intuition and experimentation-blend influences from music, poetry, and personal dreamwork to explore themes of transformation, rebirth, and transcendence. She often employs nature's symbols—drawing from skies, trees, water, birds, and other elements—infused with dynamic color to depict emerging forms symbolizing the union of physical (earth) and spirit (aether). These compositions blur tangible-ethereal boundaries, transforming her paintings into portals that invite exploration of mystical landscapes where sacred and surreal converge. Romm’s paintings are not simply representations but invitations to connect with the deeper forces shaping existence.

  • Layered Planes 4 Collage 16 x 20 x 1 My process as an artist is disciplined, intellectually challenging and inquisitive, much as it had been in architectural practice. I am not obliged however, to follow the many requirements that were once necessary to create functioning buildings. Works are now fantasy environments and constructions. I create vivid, colorful abstract compositions reinterpreted from actual building groupings or from shapes that come to my imagination. The first step in the process is to sketch out ideas, which I often change as I move forward to completion. I focus on juxtaposed, overlapping shapes, receding and advancing in space. The use of acrylic paint and metallic paper lend well to sharp delineation of each element. Mounting paper on foam core board for selected portions, helps create a three dimensional illusion for the observer. I am energized and made joyful by the world I create. • Wild Wild West digital Duraflex C photographic print mounted behind plexiglass with buffed edges Size of Piece: 15 x 20 x 1.5
“Wild Wild West” is part of my ongoing series Mirrors of a Universe, exploring the archeology of reflectivity in urban spaces. This diptych captures layered reflections of city life in glass, water, and metal, where fleeting moments of light and shadow reveal hidden patterns, textures, and interactions. Each frame, taken seconds apart, creates a dialogue with time, highlighting subtle changes in movement, atmosphere, and perception. By pairing images that mirror, contrast, or complement each other, I examine how urban environments record the impermanence of human activity. The work transforms ordinary city scenes into layered meditations on temporality, presence, consciousness, and the rhythms of daily life, inviting viewers to slow down and notice. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Striped Sofa Light watercolor Size of Piece: 14.75 x 18.25 Greenstein finds herself captivated by how light shapes the way we see: it defines form, sets mood, and determines what is visible or hidden. Just as compelling are the shadows it leaves behind: shifting, collapsing, and reconfiguring the familiar into the unexpected. Light and shadow are the protagonists. Sharp lines may define a shadow, while a cast light may have a soft, caressing edge. Spaces within the painting become abstract, flattening into what is light and what is not. In this piece, "Striped Sofa Light", I was struck by the way the light interacted with the sofa, creating all sorts of stripes. Seeing this light, in this specific pattern, only seems to happen in early morning winter light. This made the opportunity to paint it even more fleeting and special. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Red Pepper Autopsy oil on canvas Size of Piece: 16 x 16 x 1.5 My subject matter often references the human form, gesture, memory, emotion, and sensuality. “Red Pepper Autopsy” has been fueled by the culinary action of cutting into red peppers. I am viscerally excited by the disembowelment of peppers, their flesh, and seeds. I celebrate the red energy and plump life of this vegetable and always savor its taste. I ingest this experience and then synthesize it into my own expression. My use of paint is visceral. I have an appetite for color and enjoy the manipulation of paint that grabs the eye and stirs the unconscious. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • The Living Room Size of Piece: 9.5 x 12.5 x .5
The Living Room began as a pencil drawing of my own space—structured, representational, familiar. Layering acrylic paint and oil pastels, I wondered: can anything literal be abstracted, and why does that matter? As the work evolved, lines softened, forms unraveled, and the room itself dissolved into color, gesture, and memory. What began as a place became a question—about perception, emotion, and the shifting point where reality yields to abstraction. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Vile chromogenic print on aluminum Size of Piece: 15.75 x 20
"Vile" is a diptych from my larger series "Every Woman and Nobody.” This body of work explores the intersections of memory, trauma, and the body. Here my exposed neck is juxtaposed with a vial constructed of broken glass, hair, and a twig. A translucent overlay of a document, the words obscured, repeated, and reversed, reveals the medical record of a teenage suicide attempt. The two images connect the vulnerability of the body with the symbolism of containment, poison, and preservation. The title, Vile, plays on the dual meaning of “vial” as a vessel and “vile” as something repellent, alluding to the act of swallowing poison and the enduring imprint of harm. • Thoughts Nebula mixed media on wood panel Size of Piece: 12 x 12 x 2 Thoughts Nebula embodies the lunar archetype — the reflective, cyclical force that has guided human timekeeping since the first calendars aligned women’s bodies with the moon. Through my practice of Temporal Psychoexpressionism, I build each piece stroke by stroke, counting time as both meditation and record. Fresco-like textures, watercolor, and gold accents create a portal for resonance: the moon here is not astronomical but archetypal, a luminous portrait of intuition, reflection, and eternal cycles. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Cypress Knees encaustic mixed media Size of Piece: 16 x 16 x 1.5 My journey to paint Cypress Knees gained momentum during the pandemic. When all things art were closed, the outdoors was still open. I began exploring my own street. All the trees in my neighborhood were captured. Next in my list was Cypress knees. To find some appealing to me, I visited about six different settings. Fortunately I found a huge collection of knees surrounding a Cypress tree grove. I set up my easel and sat in front of a tree close enough to see the veins of leaves and other features. Nature is excellent at composition so often I had an easy time to convey the sense of what I was seeing. This picture has had a joyful life. • Pavel and Peter Throw the Bride to the Wolves Acrylic on canvas and wood Size of Piece: 8 x 12 This is a painting of an episode in a novel by Willa Cather called My Antonia. I’ve always been obsessed this Russian fable nested within an American context, and felt compelled to paint it. It is as if I could have no peace until I did it, and I am sure it expresses some kind of deep anxiety I have, probably about marriage or sexual politics or gendered vulnerability. • CALYPSIS | The Golden Threads mixed media, digital color, oil, oil paint pens, subdued sealant Size of Piece: 16 x 20 x .75 CALYPISIS | The Golden Threads was born from silence, carrying strands no hand could sever. Her golden threads are woven from grief and triumph, each shimmer recalling lives once lived and reminding us nothing is truly lost. The work began as a sketch, scanned and digitally refined into composition, then layered with oils, my detailed NeuroLines process, and black extra fine oil paint pens to build depth and surreal presence. In her threads I see my own journey, each line and layer binding pain and resilience into memory and transformation. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • "Window Beyond" acrylic on board, papers, inks, stabillos Size of Piece: 16 x 16 x 1.5 When I began this piece, I had just put down some color and marks on the canvas. When a shadow from the window behind me fell across the surface. I liked the way the shadow portrayed the windowpanes. I let that moment guide the piece, weaving in layered paper to echo both structure and light. I often see the moon or the morning light as it peeks in whenever I am working and used this as inspiration. The result seemed to tell of a view from within looking out and wondering if the view from outside was as stirring as the view from within. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • You Are Not Alone found objects Size of Piece: 17 x 7 x 2 "You Are Not Alone" is a narrative found object assemblage wall-relief sculpture. It was inspired by a news report about the increase in teen suicide. When interviewing family members and friends, they repeatedly said they did not have a clue that the person was struggling. It breaks my heart. I feel that as a society we need to do much better in terms of connecting with each other. Get together, or call, or write and check in on each other. If you are struggling, you do not have to do it alone. Build a support system, seek help, talk with your friends and family. No one should be left to feel alone. • Birth of a Legend oil on canvas Size of Piece: 18 x 14 x 1.5 In 2024, the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History approached NAWA sister Rhian Swain and me to create an art exhibition featuring local Augusta Black history stories. Rhian and I went to work creating art that told stories both well known and obscure. One of the stories that fascinated me was the long-ago demolished Lenox Theatre. The Lenox was a Black-only theatre, a centerpiece of Augusta's Golden Blocks neighborhood, and was built to offer the Black community their very own safe space for entertainment. No whites were allowed. The legacy of the Lenox, and the resiliency and history of Black Augustans in the 20th century, is a subject dear to my heart. • Bakery acrylic on canvas Size of Piece: 20 x 30 x 1.5 Inspired by a photo I took of a bakery in Lafayette, Indiana, and graffiti in Marian, Indiana. This was one of my earlier pieces, where I incorporated graffiti, which has since become a recurring theme in my work. I love the raw beauty of graffiti, particularly when combined with bold colors and a cartoonish style. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Finding Our Way mixed media, acrylic on canvas with fabric, cork, paper Size of Piece: 16 x 20 x 1.5 My mixed media practice is rooted in the concept of rebuilding—as both a tangible process and a metaphor for transformation. Rebuilding acknowledges what has been lost while opening paths toward renewal, resilience, and new possibilities. This balance between memory, history, and reinvention is central to my work. This mixed media collage reflects on how we create our paths through life. How we face obstacles, opportunities, choices, and large social systems that develop our fully layered and textured selves. A subtle Fibonacci sequence to 21 hints at our formative experiences quietly directing our fate. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Now What? Acrylic and Ink with Found Photograph Size of Piece: 10 x 10 x 1 This collage centers on unknown characters in a drama captured in a found photograph from the mid-1900s. As I extend the environment of the photo, I devise dialogue in my head and offer a context, giving the individuals a voice. My objective is not merely to fabricate a story but to invite others to join me in reflecting on our own lives, the journeys we have taken, and the ones we have managed to avoid. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • It Needs to be Now Photo and pigmented beeswax combines on Kozo and wood panel Size of Piece: 20 x 16 x 2 I create fictional visual biographies that examine identity, time and memory. The imagery is a combination of abstraction and realism with a focus on metaphor and symbolism. Each of these mixed media works is composed of intricate layers of pigmented beeswax, photographs, and abstract drawings. The photographic elements are a fusion of reclaimed and reimagined vintage photographs, with my own digital photographs that I combine and repurpose to add narrative texture. I manipulate the image by exaggerating, adding and subtracting physical attributes to create illusory detail. I examine identity as it is constructed, obscured, and revealed through layers of history, memory, and transformation. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • CLOUDY acrylic on canvas Size of Piece: 12 x 12 Art has been my best and most loyal friend since I was a child. It encourages me to explore and challenges me to learn and grow in skills, perserverance, and patience. When I was a student in college the ability to draw realistically provided me with a sense of pride and accomplishment, but as I've grown and matured, I have an interest in moving toward more impressionistic approaches. I love experimenting with different mediums and choose the media and process that helps me express my feelings about a particular subject. My acrylic painting, CLOUDY was my response to the sunlight and shoreline of South Carolina, with an overlay of memories from many summers spent on Cape Cod. • Harmony in Stillness Size of Piece: 12 x 8.5 x 7.5 As a metal artist, my artistic evolution has been a journey of discovery and refinement, where experimentation with techniques and materials has shaped my unique voice. From the initial spark of inspiration to the careful execution of each piece, my process involves a thoughtful exploration of form and meaning. Through my art, I strive to engage viewers on both visual and emotional levels, fostering a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of creativity. Each piece serves as a dialogue starter, inspiring connection and contemplation of the shared human experience. • Another Brick in the Wall

    oil on canvas

    Size of Piece: 20 x 16 x 1.5

In this interpretation of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, I sought to capture not the structure itself, but the emotional and spiritual resonance it inspired in me when I visited in 2023. I was moved by and have tried to express the collective weight of memory, faith, and longing pressed into stone. The textured layers of paint evoke the passage of time and the countless hands that have touched these ancient blocks, leaving behind silent prayers and fragments of hope. The interplay of color and form mirrors the diversity of humanity that gathers here — vibrant, fractured, yet unified by a shared yearning for peace and connection.

  • Stretched on Your Grave

    ceramic, acrylic, graphite, enamel

    Size of Piece: 13.5 x 10 x 5.5

“Stretched on Your Grave” is an exploration of grief. While grief is often portrayed as somber and subdued, it can also be vivid, raw, and full of intensity. Strong emotion comes with strong color.

The figure’s raised arm may be a gesture of defense, of shelter, or of reaching—perhaps toward something lost, or something yet to come. Her upward gaze suggests both longing and focus.

Inscribed within the work are three poems that illuminate the many shades of mourning—sorrow, love, memory, and resilience:

    “Funeral Blues” by W.H. Auden,

“In Blackwater Woods” by Mary Oliver,

and “For Grief” by John O’Donohue.

  • Contemplation

    oil on panel

    Size of Piece: 16 x 12 x .125

The window in this painting is from an upper floor at Wiawaka Center for Women on Lake George, an artists’ retreat where a young Georgia O’Keeffe once painted.  I imagined the many women artists who have stood in this place, taking in the beauty of out the lake, contemplating their futures.

  • Breakfast Scrambled Eggs

    oil on panel

    Size of Piece: 18 x 14 x .5

    Breakfast Scrambled Eggs And News

I painted this in oils in a very quick fashion from a live model. The entire painting took 40 minutes to complete.

My goal was to show emotions that I was experiencing during the time of Covid and Isolation. I had become addicted to the news and found it difficult to get out of bed on some days. Caring for myself was a challenge as I feared that my loved ones mary become infected  with Covid. Germs have always been my symptom of OCD and this was a true test for me. I was pleased to discover that I could handle the experience so I placed an egg soft sculpture on my models head to create humor during a time of fear. The egg and the painting made me laugh and gave me a break from my  worries. Art had rescued me once again.

  • Riding the Wave

    poplar

    Size of Piece: 15 x 26 x 10

In creating RIDING THE WAVE I brought together my love of poplar wood’s natural beauty and my fascination with the spiral form. First I carved and shaped the wood slab to highlight its particular grain patterns. Then, to form a wavelike shape, I sliced the slab into equal-width sections and attached them to one another with slightly offset positioning. Once assembled I further refined the form. To maximize its sense of movement, I elevated the sculpture and oriented it horizontally.

  • The Rendezvous

    watercolor pencil

    Size of Piece: 15 x 15 x .75

In The Rendezvous, two small creatures--alternately half bird/animal and half human--in an idyllic garden are balancing on a mostly real flower.  Although it looks unreal.

Who or what is the "better half"?  Why?  How does picking a partner who has qualities you are missing or wanting play out?  One might allow any associations it flower and go to seed.

Representing my thoughts on relationships visually provokes thoughts not only in viewers but in me as well.  I think that much of life feels unreal partly because the unconscious and subconscious are running the show that we call life.

  • Undergrowth iV

    acrylic and charcoal on canvas

    Size of Piece: 24 x 20

Having a solid foundation in Natural History and Botany, I find myself inspired by nature at both macro and micro levels. I am captivated by the shapes, structures, and colors of the stems, leaves, flowers, roots, and fruits of the plants I am familiar with. My more recent projects delve into the complexity and interwoven aspects of gardens and natural environments. Typically, I begin a piece with a charcoal drawing, followed by an underpainting in acrylic, where I layer warm and cool colors alternately. The finished artwork emerges through dynamic brushwork, aiming to convey both energy and texture.

    Size of Piece: 30 x 24 x 1

I’m a textile artist who is inspired by the world around me, especially by nature. I look at my surroundings with inquisitive eyes and mind, with curiosity, knowing there are hidden treasures to be found and turned into art.

My artistic approach is mostly intuitive with a constant awareness of color combination and contrast. The use of strong colors is a direct influence of my Brazilian heritage. Using fabric as the medium to create my art pieces was a natural choice since I have been working with it from my teenage years.

  • Buoys, Buoys, Buoys

    oil on canvas

    Size of Piece: 24 x 30 x 1

These buoys were hanging at a pier on West 41st St. in New York City. I loved the unexpectedness of the buoys, with odd shapes and unpredictable colors. Their distressed quality made for a more interesting subject. I painted this realistically but with the hope that the final outcome would have abstract qualities.

  • Can't Thread the Needle

    acrylic and graphite on canvas

    Size of Piece: 12 x 12 x 1.5

The roots of my work can be traced to my academic studies in Fiber Art. Contemporary women icons studied were Sheila Hicks, Olga de Amarel, Lenore Tawney, Claire Zeisler and Adela Akers just to name a few. There were very few men making their mark with fiber as historically it was “women’s work”.  Relegated to “craft” rather than “fine art” further denigrated this art form.

ABSTRACTION was and still is a key component in the Fiber Arts. These explorations of form, texture, pattern and color is my life-long study and practice.  It was a natural progression for me to continue to investigate these qualities of abstraction when I pivoted from fiber to paint and canvas.

This piece is part of a new body of work applying my deep roots to fiber to abstract painting.

    oil on canvas (raymar board)

    Size of Piece: 5 x 7

I love the landscape. The painting is truly a celebration of light. My plein air paintings provided me with the composition, scale, and light pattern for this studio piece. " In June's Light" exemplifies the exceptional light patterns of what one finds in Giverny and the exceptional landscapes found abroad.

  • The Great Divide

    mixed media fabric collage

    Size of Piece: 10.5 x 10

My artwork is a fusion of traditional and experimental media, incorporating collage with fiber, painted fabric, printmaking and hand stitching. My color palette is inspired by colors of nature, with contrast created by the juxtaposition of texture and media. I hand paint and print natural fabrics with acrylics and watercolor. Color families emerge, a collage begins, and I begin to stitch.

The Great Divide was created using an intuitive process. I created a balanced composition with hand printed papers, commercial fabrics and painted fabrics. The botanical square is a gel print; the cheesecloth "fabric" is acrylic paint using unconventional mark making tools. Once I established my collage, I began to use thread as structure and mark making. The strong diagonal is my Great Divide.

  • Trees Die Standing

    acrylic on canvas

    Size of Piece: 14 x 14

    Trees Die Standing

This painting is inspired from a favorite Spanish play I read by Alejandro Cosana called “Los Árboles Mueren de Pie” translated it means Trees Die Standing. The story is about a family trying to prevent their elderly matriarch from hearing tragic news for fear it might kill her. She finally hears the news and continues strong taking care of the family. She says she is dead inside, but still standing, like a tree dies standing up.

“Do not see me fall. Dead inside, but standing tall. Like a tree.”

It reminds me of women who are nurturing caregivers of children and elderly, who need to show strength by standing strong, despite their grief.

I am a multi-disciplinary artist in Santa Barbara, CA. I graduated from the University of California San Diego with a double major in art and cinema, then worked as a camera assistant in movies for 20 years while showing my ceramics at LA galleries. I began painting in oil and creating collage during the pandemic and received so much encouragement that I opened my studio in 2023.

My first year as a professional artist, I was awarded an Emerging Artist Fellowship by the California Arts Council. I also had my first international showing at the International Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, with one work winning an "Award of Excellence" and the other a "Gold Award" (the highest honor). I've gone on to win Gold Awards in the same show in 2024 and 2025 and show internationally

    oil on passwood panel

    Size of Piece: 19.25 x 19.25

After graduating college with a degree in Studio Art, I branched out into Graphic Design and mural painting, while continuing to paint on canvas when I had time.

In recent years, with an empty nest and more time, I’ve been painting much more prolifically. While I feel that I’m still learning and will continue to learn with every single new painting, I also feel as if I’ve finally reached a point where I know what I’m trying to express. I’ve also honed my skills to a level where I’m able to effectively convey my concepts.

I've also been showing my work much more publicly and frequently--in group shows in the tristate area in the last few years, with two solo shows since 2019, and another coming up in 2026. I'm thrilled to be a member of NAWA, and have my work shown in this exhibit.
