Where She Is Now oil on paper 8 x 20 The works in this series (Dressing Table Vignettes) are studies, created for conceptual development of larger works. They regard vanities as private, personal spaces where one may meditate upon memories and encounter a depth of emotions reflecting in the mirror about life, being female. Looking glasses are used in metaphor, for the contemplation of constructing oneself for the world – for pleasure, necessity, or perhaps protection. In my process, I deconstruct textiles and garments from my wardrobe to create surface assemblages as low-relief grounds for paintings. What emerges is a visual dialogue, evoking human presence, aimed at illuminating renewal and transformation allegorically contributing to the dialogue and conceptual expression. Theo Makes the Right Decision mixed media: photo and pigmented beeswax combines on Kozo and wood panel 20 x 16 History comes to us incomplete, in fragments, half-remembered stories, and voices never fully heard. In response, I create fictional visual biographies that honor lives that exist at the edges of recorded history. Each portrait is an act of imaginative witnessing, making space for moments that might have been or should have been. Each of these mixed media works is composed of intricate layers of pigmented beeswax, photographs, and abstract drawings. The photographic elements are a fusion of reclaimed and reimagined vintage photographs, with my own photographs that I combine and repurpose to add narrative texture. This layered process mirrors how we access memory; peering through time with imperfect clarity, discovering the way identity is constructed, concealed, and recovered across generations. Moods and Mists oil on belgian linen 31 x 31 This scene is an imagined seascape of drama and sensory immersion. I painted it after a walk on a December day when the clouds were steely grey, pulling apart to barely reveal a brilliant setting sun, but hiding the brilliance just a bit. The contrast of bright light fading into darkness struck a nerve, reminding me that light always triumphs over dark in the end. You Will Outgrow Your Shoes sculpture: found objects 22 x 13 x 3.5 Relationship with Love (Family) Series...this piece was inspired by a song lyric: You will outgrow your shoes, but you will always be my baby. I think most parents think this way. I had the shoes, so as soon as I heard the lyric, I had my intention for this work. I have a daughter so this work was very personal for me and universal, thinking about all families. I used objects from different ages to create the narrative....diaper pin to engagement ring, skate key to car keys. The fan was given to me by a former student, and my daughter had a very similar one. So many stories, so many memories that we share. Held oil on canvas 60 x 60 Held explores how experience is carried and remains present over time. A saturated field of red is built through layered gestures, scraped passages, and areas where the paint thins and breathes. Earlier marks are not erased but absorbed, remaining active within the surface. Near the upper center, a pale form emerges—held but not fixed—while vertical traces rise and dissolve beneath it. The structure is felt rather than defined. The painting holds a space between vulnerability and stability, where something might have disappeared, but didn’t. Instead of collapse, there is openness. The Decoy assemblage 30.5 x 22.5 x 1.25 I am intrigued by negative space, in this case the remnant pieces left over from a chair shape I had cut out of a sheet of lauan. There is no preconceived idea formed as I start working with the remnants. The shapes are used as is, they are not altered or refined outside of some light sanding of the edges. The effort in composing these disparate shapes into a cohesive whole is an exploration of rhythm and spacial balance. It is a process that I find continually engaging and satisfying as the pieces begin to come together to tell a story I would not have envisioned. Cornered photography 20 x 16 My photography portfolios deal with beauty that I find in simple places. I search for art in places often overlooked by people rushing by: street abstractions formed by the effects of traffic and the erosion of painted lines; art in the visible layers of torn papers restructured by random anonymous participants; changes from weathering; oxidized rusted surfaces creating patterns and vistas; reflections in puddles, ponds, or store windows; ice patterns; simple arrangements of flowers and fruit at markets. And, as ever, there is the straight image: looking up, down, and around to catch that perfect image, THAT second in time never to be repeated. I was reminded how much in awe I was in Venice of the way a sunset was reflecting on the water around the islands and boats. I didn't have a camera at the time, so I made sketches with my notes. Boy and His Dog Named Moose charcoal on arches paper 22.5 x 28.5 Portraiture is an opportunity to portray light and intriguing form, and explore varied emotive qualities. In portraying individuals at different ages and life stages I engage themes of temporal change, individual vulnerability and human mortality. I reflect moments of inquisitiveness, strength, calm or vulnerability; traces of self-protection and openness; or glimmers of hopefulness, pride and earnestness emerge. As I preserve a moment in the subject’s evolution, I acknowledge the tumultuous forces and inevitable unstoppable sea of change we ride in life. The child’s and his dog’s intent gaze, and the connection, felt in this moment between these friends, are the subjects here. Moose is no longer alive, but the friendship with “his animal brother”, as he called him, is still palpable. The difficult and satisfying challenge in my portraiture is to portray some unarmed truth and in so doing to suggest our complex humanity and shared experience. Proteus bronze sculpture 12 x 14.25 x 15 Many cultures believean object, anumal or person gains additional attribute by changing forms. The octopus can change shapes or appearances. does shape-shifting ( meaning to change or move)has its origins in ancient myths and legens where gods, spirits and magical beings possesed this ability. In greek mythology, Proteus ,a sea god, possesed this ability. Certainly a positive trait today: to be able or capable of changing-hopefully moving into a positive direction. GoldLeaf acrylic on archival cradle board 24 x 24 I cleaned, dried and applied gold paint to one of a tree's organs (leaf) which acts as a primary food factory for a tree. Humans ought to regard leaves more precious than gold. Tree terpenes are aromatic compounds released by trees, particularly conifers, which offer significant health benefits to humans, including reduced stress, lower inflammation, and improved mood and are natural anti-inflammatories. There are endless possibilities as the tide changes, the weather turns, people come and go. There is freedom and fantasy as you get your toes in the sand and surf. Homesick photography: Digitally manipulated 21 x 17 Walking in the East Village, I was struck by the graffiti shouting out HOMESICK on the side of the building. The message can be interpreted in many ways...Longing for home, disappointment in seeing the neighborhood change, or on closer inspection... what is lost, as can be read in the partial message "the buildings we lose, are as important...." The strong statement, the blank white of where the building had been, along with the diagonals underscoring HOMESICK and the painterly weatherworn posters along the wall, come together to create an impactful visual image. Vibrant Poppy Glow - Scotland photograph on wrapped canvas 24 x 24 While walking through a Scottish garden, I encountered this extraordinary poppy growing and knew it had to be photographed. In Lightroom, I isolated the flower, blurred and darkened the surrounding garden to pure black, allowing the color and architecture of the bloom to speak without distraction. The ruffled white petals spreading wide against a pure black background draw the eye inward to the magenta-green center — a surprise that rewards the viewer repeatedly. That unexpected burst of color and design at the heart of something so classically simple is what makes this image compelling to me. I photograph flowers the way the Dutch Golden Age masters painted them: as they are, not as we might wish them to be. The shadows falling across these petals are real. The raindrops are real. I do not correct nature's imperfections, because they are not imperfections — they are evidence that this flower lived. Sunlit Reverie acrylic on illustration board 18 x 23 Sunlit Reverie features the Charles Engelhard Courtyard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is one of my favorite spots to pause in after visiting some of the galleries. The courtyard is a skylit sculpture filled space that one can wander through or just sit in and take in the mise-en-scene. Sunlit Reverie is also an exploration of how light defines perceptions of a physical space and the objects in it.: The limitations and illusory aspect of perception has always intrigued me; specifically, the ambiguity of light and shadow, and how it determines how we see colors, values and forms. Circles Dance 2 sculpture: piano key parts, plexiglass, plywood, stain 25 x 10 x 10 CIRCLE DANCE 2 began taking form when a friend gave me a bagful of piano keys and parts. The varied shapes and elements led me to create a work that playfully celebrates its patterns and gentle rhythm. I added clear plexiglass rods to give the piece breathing room while contributing to its overall structure. The plywood base serves as a counterpoint to the verticality of the sculpture. With Hope of Ending World Hunger mixed media 30 x 24 My Sculptural Painting, “In Hope of Ending World Hunger” was created with this sentiment in mind. My inspiration comes from working in food banks and donating food to those in need, as well as the attention this needy cause deserves. I combined 3- dimensional elements with my oil painted portrait to better bring this portrait with its humanitarian theme to life. Cloth and burlap, sculpted hands that reach out beyond the flat oil painted portrait, and an authentic hand carved bowl from Africa, compel viewers to consider and confront the daunting issue of World Hunger, as we look into mesmerizing eyes that represent 673-783 million people who still go hungry today. Perhaps the image of this piece will foster an appreciation for all we have and be a catalyst for donations of food and funding. Sweet Pea collage 16.5 x 16.5 I go out west to Oregon a lot to see my kids. I was there last May and saw sweet peas growing wild all over the hill behind my son’s house. I picked a bunch and took pictures and started calling my grandson, “Sweet Pea”. This painting is for him. He is a colorful character with lots of layers and textures, just like sweet peas.
