Like Fogged Glass acrylic on artist board 9 x 11 This piece was inspired by the heavy weather generated by Lake Superior. Though it is a beautiful body of water, it is also incredibly dangerous, creating its own weather systems due to its size, depth and cold temperature. The weather is unpredictable and can change drastically in minutes. Fog is common (as shown in this painting) and the waves are very close together which relentlessly pound shorelines, along with shipping traffic, recreational boaters and surfers. Spending time on the water, or on its beautiful islands and shorelines, requires a strong sense of respect. It's a place that can inspire awe and trepidation. When You Sit Quietly You See Many Things acrylic on paper 13 x 13 An ongoing theme in my work is the interconnectedness of all life and that the wellbeing of humanity is directly related to the health of our natural world. With living in the woods in Maine and traveling extensively, I have had the gift of experiencing nature in many parts of the world. This painting was done in a small village in Japan while my family and I were traveling around the world. While sitting a very long time with my daughter on the side of a river we were able to observe this graceful egret. I strive to convey through color and brushwork what my direct experience is in a place. Over the past ten years, I have moved from realism to full abstraction. This painting is my early stages of abstraction in which I was loosening up by using a palette knife. My work comes from my heart and seeks to offer healing and hope. What We Carry Unnamed acrylic and oil pastel on canvas with black float frame 13.5 x 13.5 My work gives visual form to the complex, often unspoken emotional landscape of women in transition —those of us moving between identities, roles, and expectations. It is a space that can feel both expansive and disorienting, where language often falls short. I paint the emotions women are taught to carry—but never taught how to name. Through abstraction, I hold what is difficult to articulate: layered, shifting emotional states shaped by transition, accumulation, and change. These works become a way of making visible what is usually carried in silence. My process is informed by years in a precise, detail-oriented profession where structure and discipline are essential. In my art studio, I loosen that control, allowing intuition, interruption, and emotional response to lead. This shift creates a visual language that balances restraint with release. Each painting is built through layered gestures—marks added, obscured, and rediscovered over time—becoming a record of both intention and surrender. I am drawn to the space where form dissolves and reassembles, where clarity and ambiguity coexist, and the viewer is invited to navigate rather than resolve. Ultimately, my work is about emergence: what becomes visible when layers—both seen and unseen—are allowed to remain in dialogue. Babushka oil 6 x 6 I am in third grade here, 1966, standing in front of our house in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, about to walk to school. My mother had just made me a triangular scarf, the kind every girl wore then. She took the photo that inspired this painting. I took the scarf off halfway to school… I didn’t want to look like a little babushka. This was my neighborhood, I knew every inch of it. When I painted it, I wanted to hold onto the feeling…the story of without being literal about it. The architecture is intentionally abstract, more memory than record. It was painted within the constraints of a 6x6” format, with a limited palette and a single brush so it did not become precious. Pendĕre collage on canvas panel 12 x 12 Pendĕre is built through accumulation — of surface, gesture, memory, and response. Constructed from papers that were hand-painted, stained, textured, and altered by the artist before assembly, the collage embraces imperfection, erosion, and layering as essential elements of its visual language. Each fragment carries its own history while contributing to a larger emotional and rhythmic whole. The composition shifts between order and disruption. Gridded passages and repeated rectangular forms suggest architecture, mapping, or systems of containment, while darker gestural marks interrupt that structure with a sense of movement and instability. Areas of luminous rust, blue, and muted green emerge from an otherwise restrained palette like moments of resonance within silence. The title, Pendĕre, evokes both “to hang” and “to weigh,” suggesting suspension, uncertainty, and reflection. Circular forms appear as anchors or counterweights within the composition, holding tension between gravity and release. The work invites the viewer to move slowly across the surface, discovering relationships between texture, edge, opacity, and mark. Though abstract, the collage is rooted in lived experience and intuitive response. Fragments are layered much like memory itself — partial, altered over time, and continuously recontextualized. Pendĕre does not seek a fixed narrative; instead, it offers a contemplative space where balance and fragmentation coexist, and where meaning emerges through sustained looking. Legend of Golden Woman oil on canvas 11 x 14 Two hundred years ago, a legendary "gold-boiling city" known as Mangazeya existed in Siberia. Historical accounts mention a massive golden monument standing at the very heart of this city. The monument took the form of a female figure. Many indigenous peoples of northern Siberia lived under a matriarchal social structure and held a deep belief in nature spirits. It is possible that this "Golden Woman"—or *Golden Baba*—embodied the spirit of wealth and prosperity. As life in Siberia evolved and new trade routes emerged, the city began to decline. Eventually, Mangazeya vanished, and with it, the Golden Baba disappeared as well. While the era of matriarchy now survives primarily in memory, the legend of the Golden Baba lives on to this day. Many believe that the golden sculpture was hidden away somewhere, and they continue to search for it in the secluded depths of the Siberian taiga. Yet perhaps they are looking in the wrong place. It is possible that the Golden Baba is, in fact, a symbol of Woman—the very foundation upon which earthly life rests. She represents our grandmothers, mothers, and sisters—those who give life and protect it. I believe, a golden monument to Woman should be erected in every country; that would be truly fair. The Older Couple (The Extinct Birds) soft pastel on paper 14 x 12 This painting brings together two stories - my grandparents’ life and the memory of extinct birds. My grandparents on my mother's side were very much in love when they were young. They birthed and raised seven children together, and built a beautiful house in suburbs near Issyk-Kul' lake in Kyrgyzstan, where i was lucky to spend few summers of my childhood. I was very young then, but I remember them being older and rather quiet people. They didn't talk much, they were very kind and solid. They had a great history of their own. As story told, there was great love, big dreams, triumphs and falls, and they had every that every human being go through throughout their lives... But they are done now. They left this world as all beings do, leaving behind their herd, quiet memories and a few portraits of them. So did vanish these beautiful birds, whose images I saw in a museum of natural history, the old exhibition. These birds have been extinct now for more than 200 years. Lip Service in Blue oil paints, charcoal, paper, encaustics on wood 14 x 14 From the Delft Series: Born into a nomadic childhood, I moved every three years, each relocation driven by my mother’s appetite for new floor plans and color schemes. Though we never left Long Island, only shifting from one expressway exit to the next, each move reconfigured my sense of place. As a child, I accompanied my mother through model homes, where serious decorating conversations shaped how I learned to see. What once felt destabilizing became a way of organizing experience. My memories are color coded and archived by house number, interiors mapped alongside what unfolded outside their walls. Place, for me, is architectural and psychological. These paintings are anchored in the years we lived at 29 Weeks Street (Long Island Expressway, Exit 61), from 1959 to 1962, following our move from Queens to the suburbs. Inside, the house was governed by a strict blue and white palette: every room, every drape, every plate organized into solids and pattern, punctuated by green plants; reenforcing order, control and maternal authority. Outside the house, postwar prosperity and Cold War unease shaped daily life. The work forms a portrait of domestic aspiration, control, and place shaped through design. They are opportunistic and clever food gatherers. "Curiosity" was created to highlight the magpie, known for its intelligence and curiosity, and to symbolize communication and connection. In order to capture the serene beauty of nature through the lens of a striking magpie, I placed him perching gracefully on a branch. Geoff the Blue Jay fiber art 8 x 12 My work combines textile, stitching, and found materials to create layered assemblages that move between wall-based imagery and sculptural form. These marks of construction function as evidence of transformation and repair, suggesting that both landscapes and living beings are formed through accumulation, adaptation, and change. The patchwork structures within the sculptural animals especially reflect an interest in resilience and identity assembled from fragments. My framed works often resemble windows into contained worlds, while the sculptures extend those worlds into physical space. The Mermaid mixed media 14 x 11 This piece depicts an alluring mermaid sitting on a rock at sea. Made of a wood art board, paper decoupage, polymer clay, acrylic paints, Swarovski crystals, and sealed with matte polyurethane. The artist created unique images, including background decoupage paper, using text-to-image AI. Images were printed onto water soluble paper using a laser jet printer, then transferred to polymer clay. After washing away the paper, images were cut out using an Xacto knife, then baked. Clay images were hand painted after baking for enhancement. The wood art board was covered on all visible sides in the artist-designed decoupage paper. Artist considers herself a storyteller and uses symbolism in her art. Unique style is a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Medieval, Contemporary, and Mexican folk art. One of only a few exhibiting polymer clay & mixed media artists to use a similar distinctive technique. Her art is her legacy, and she wishes to leave a positive legacy. Summer Bouquet oil on canvas 13 x 13 These flowers from my daughter's friends were such a bright and happy memento from a perfect May morning that I wanted to paint them to memorialize a day of graduating and celebrating. The multi-colored bouquet makes me think of a living rainbow, or flower fireworks. The lively rhythms, textures and improvisational feel in the song inspired the active forms I used in the painting. The palette always begins with the colors I hear in the music, and I expand as needed to create a cohesive work. As an artist born with perfect pitch and synesthesia, my ability to 'hear' colors is a wellspring of inspiration. My abstract work explores various musical keys, tempi, rhythms, patterns and moods. Local light and atmosphere affect the plant life that thrives, the colors we see and experience of mood and energy. These paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between painterly realism and abstract passages. Raised in rural Wisconsin and moving to Florida and Texas in my first thirteen years piqued my interest in diverse landscapes and flora. Whether a mass of color blur or the focal point, each is recording its environment and time. My creative practice, focusing on materials and process, reflects my chemical engineering background. The Window That Held the Night No.1 photograph 11 x 14 The Window That Held the Night No. 1 was photographed at the Lunar Faire on a night when the moon was a thin crescent. Its faint light offered little illumination, allowing the artificial glow of the fair to shape the scene. Two shadows cross the weathered boards of an old barn. Their bodies are not visible. Only the forms they leave behind appear, stretched and altered by the light that holds them for a moment. At the center of the wall is a dark window. It does not reveal an interior. It simply holds the night. It absorbs light and resists reflection, becoming a still point within the composition. The shadows fall toward it without touching, as if drawn into the same field of tension. The worn surface of the barn carries the marks of time and exposure. It becomes a ground for these passing forms, holding them briefly before they shift and disappear. A quiet exchange emerges between permanence and impermanence, structure and fleeting presence. While the Faire is filled with sound and color, this image comes from its quieter edge, where light and darkness shape one another and absence takes on form. The Night Brings Freedom collage: rice, gelee, Mulberry papers, acrylic paint and markers, fabric and thread 10 x 15 After 4 years studying painting at Tyler School of Art in the 1970’s, life led me into a private practice in psychology. My desire to return to art never left me. Ten years ago, after experiencing significant losses, I rekindled my passion for art. I feel whole again and continue helping others heal, along with my healing through art. I create abstract paintings and collages exploring grief/loss. In the process I uncover joy, strength, courage and resilience. Layering, blending and glazing shapes and colors keep those no longer here visible and remembered. Drawing in lines bonds me to others. These lines remind me of Kintsugi, a Japanese art of mending broken pottery into something more beautiful and resilient. I intentionally show staples and ripped paper- grief is messy and my art mirrors this. Making art gives me purpose, endless possibilities and awakens an excitement that will last me a lifetime. Although Lavender means Distrust, for me it is honest and true and helps to purify my mind and body. photograph 8 x 6 I grow herbs and flowers and have used my garden as an escape from current events. Sam paper on canvas 12 x 9 I attended the outdoor, evening gig where this young man was playing keyboard. I was inspired by the halo effect created by the hot pink stage lighting behind him, as well as the movement created by the breeze. The subject matter in my work varies widely, because as in this case, I am often taken with a scene or an image and immediately wonder if I can capture it in paper, which is my only medium. There is no paint in any of my work. All the color is derived from the papers, in a non-traditional collage technique. Sometimes a single paper is just the right color, but usually several layers are required to achieve the right hue and intensity. Still Standing photograph 10 x 15 When I walk along the beach, I cannot help but wonder whether the pier will ever be reattached. The structure appears so very strong, especially when walking underneath. It is nearly impossible to imagine it being halved by nature. Both halves seem to exist on their own though they were created as one. I set up my tripod switching from place to place to enable the viewer to catch the 'cut' and wonder about the strength of each piece to prevail without the other. To Market basswood sculpture 14 x 14 x 8 I was inspired to carve TO MARKET after observing women throughout the world carrying heavy loads on their heads with apparent ease. For these women, transporting workloads in this manner is not only efficient but also a necessity of daily life—in both rural and urban environments. Within this necessity lies its beauty. My sculpture aims to highlight the quiet dignity and gracefulness of these women at work. My creative process began with making a small clay maquette of 3 women with varied gaits. I chose basswood as the carving material because its subtle grain pattern would not detract from the overall form. I also incorporated the base into the sculpture to convey the women’s connection with the ground they walk on. The final sculpture is sanded but unstained, my way of emphasizing the unadorned simplicity of the subject matter. My backyard at Marnay sur Seine, France acrylic with acrylic texture materials on Canvas 6 x 12 One from a series of small works, I painting this painting during my professional artist residency period at the Camac Centre dArt located in Marnay sur Seine, France. The backdrop for this work was inspired the indigenous foliage that densely framed the Seine River which flowed from Paris to the Champagne Ardenne region of France. It was a cloudy day, and the color of the foliage dominated the water of the river which fascinated me. Chess.Alice etching. zinc plate. black ink on white paper 5 x 6.25 The first intaglio print I can remember seeing accompanied the story of Alice in Wonderland in a beautiful hardback edition, received as a gift from my Grandfather. As a child, I fell in love with the drawings and use of line to express form, shape, and movement. Still inspired by the classic tale, I created a series of mezzotint plates representing the beasts of Wonderland as seen through the darkness of memory. I continued that theme with this image, etched into a polished zinc plate and refined using engraving, drypoint, and spit bite techniques. Depicting an imagined scene from the other side of the looking glass, I sought to evoke a sense of ennui from the characters left in the quiet evening after Alice has departed.
