To Market
basswood sculpture
14 x 14 x 8

I was inspired to carve TO MARKET after observing women throughout the world carrying heavy loads on their heads with apparent ease. For these women, transporting workloads in this manner is not only efficient but also a necessity of daily life—in both rural and urban environments. Within this necessity lies its beauty. My sculpture aims to highlight the quiet dignity and gracefulness of these women at work.

My creative process began with making a small clay maquette of 3 women with varied gaits. I chose basswood as the carving material because its subtle grain pattern would not detract from the overall form. I also incorporated the base into the sculpture to convey the women’s connection with the ground they walk on. The final sculpture is sanded but unstained, my way of emphasizing the unadorned simplicity of the subject matter.
