Asking Questions acrylic and metallic paint on canvas 36 x 36 37 x 37 More than seven layers of transparent paint create the background upon which opaque black acrylic paint was used to inscribe research questions copied from an ocean scientist's handwritten notebook. Several more transparent layers were added over the writing. Silver metallic paint was then used to define the fluid shapes suggesting ocean water. Though specifically about ocean research, the painting celebrates the tremendous growth in all the scientific research that has taken place over the past century, and the significant ways that women now take on leadership roles in all the sciences. Pivotal Moment wax pastel on paper 14 x 20 framed size: 20 x 26 I don’t plan my pieces in advance. They evolve and develop like a deep conversation and close relationship. As this piece was taking shape, I was struck by how it was starting to look like a woman from the back, her shoulders, and her head tilted to one side with long flowing hair. And one of the last things I did was to add all the yellow color in the background. Two days after I finished this piece, Renee Good was murdered by ICE on the streets of Minneapolis less than 10 miles from where I live. Soon after, I remember reading a tribute written by Renee's wife. She said that Renee was “made of sunshine”, and in that moment I realized the yellow in my piece was that sunshine. I Dissent: Lipstick Justice (RBG) collage 20 x 16 framed size: 30 x 26 My inspiration was Queen Anne of Austria (former Queen of France). With my feminist spin, I've transformed her persona into Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. During a talkback session following a 2018 performance of "The Originalist", an Off-Broadway play at 59E59 Theaters in New York, she referred to herself as a "flaming feminist". The play centered around her close friend and ideological opposite, the late Justice Antonin Scalia. During the theatrical outing, at 85 years old, she also joked about her then, newfound, mainstream fame (Notorious RBG) and expressed her intention to remain on the bench for at least another five more years. This declaration was part of her long history of speaking boldly and openly about her advocacy for gender equality and women's rights, during her entire career as a lawyer and as a Supreme Court Justice. Nocturne hand drawn, layered cyanotype, tea and coffee dyed with thread 14 x 20 My work investigates loss, memory and human fragility. I use natural and scavenged materials. I burn, dye, stitch, rust and drill wood, paper, silk and metal. I choose obsessive, repetitive mark making processes where traces of the hand remain. Cyanotypes, created with exposure to our largest star, allude to the celestial and star filled heavens, beacons used for centuries as guideposts though many have long since burnt out. To date, the callous murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, irrefutably caught on numerous videos, have avoided prosecution in our court system. No Safe Place printmaking 18 x 15.5 My current work investigates the nature of communication - natural, political, interpersonal and geographical - to see how they attune to each other and hold the whole intact or fail and misfire. I use various printmaking methods like a cook would mix ingredients. Serigraph is great for opaque predictable outcomes. Monotypes give fuzzy mystical nuances and intaglio gives me the pressed impressions and deep grooved stories I like to entwine with other layers. The inherent notion of trust in systems as safety nets, protection and comfort is currently a consideration for every American given current political policy makers. It is only with scrutiny and discernment that we can examine which systems we have become complacent about saving or redeeming. The horizon becomes a boundary between memory and perception, while the lower area suggests reflection and fluidity. I am interested in how a familiar place can shift into an internal landscape through sensation. This work holds a subtle moment when the outside world becomes something felt rather than clearly seen. Toying with Evolution mixed media: oil, acrylic on four joined canvases and found objects on canvas (wooden nutcrackers) 21 x 24 “Toying with Evolution” traces the evolution of archetypal toys from bare primordial wooden nutcrackers to mass-produced icons like the Stormtrooper, Captain America, and the classic soldier. The work explores how the war games children play and images of heroism and innocence circulate and adapt, while the essence of play and the spirit of conflict remain constant across the ages, keeping pace with the evolution of warfare. A cartoon-like swirl animates the progression across the panels, while ghostly paint seeps from the reverse unseen side of one of the canvases, hinting at an unseen player shaping the narrative. This four-paneled sculptural canvas construction creates a layered narrative and forms part of my ongoing practice of presenting multiple viewpoints and versions of the same theme simultaneously. The multi-sided, constructed-and-undone structure demands active multi-perspective viewing, inviting the observer to decode the layered relationships between raw object and painted surface. Cascade 3 printmaking: monotype on Hahnemuhle copperplate paper 21 x 17 This monotype is part of a series of explorations of falling water, inspired by a visit to Mammoth Lakes, California, following a drought. A rainfall had just provided a bit of relief, allowing for water to cascade down rocks and inclines. It reminds of the preciousness of water. The process allowed the movement of ink on plate to mimic the movement of water, with gravity pulling it over rocks and growth. Peppers in Motion oil 12 x 14 My subject matter can often reference the human form, gesture, memory, emotion, sensuality or simply capture the energy of a time and place. Some of my work has been fueled by my love of the summer garden. It’s bounty and fruitfulness excites me. My garden in season is lush with vegetation, blossoms, and tons of veggies. I see my still life paintings not as still life but as animated conversations and interactions. When I work from the natural world, I ingest this experience and then synthesize it into my own expression. My use of paint is visceral. I have an appetite for color and enjoy the manipulation of paint that grabs the eye and stirs the unconscious. When painting, I am compelled to articulate a fierce passion for life, female strength, and fecundity. Sarah's Ketonet watercolor 23.5 x 22.5 For the past several years I’ve been dealing with my daughter’s untimely death. She taught middle school ancient history. That’s what led me to look at a schematic of the Biblical tabernacle in Jerusalem and make paintings based on it. Some of this work has focused on the scarlet, purple, and indigo veils that separate the three sections of the tabernacle. Recently, I’ve delved into the Old Testament to learn about the cloths used to make garments. I’ve made paintings of Jospeh’s tunic, Job’s sack cloth, the high priest’s ephod. I like the repetitive quality of this new work and how it sustains me. After covering the surface of the paper or canvas with hundreds of circles or ellipses, I build layer upon layer of paint leaving some areas exposed. Making painting with these references lets me feel connected to my daughter and is helping me process my grief. Bright, scattered lights shimmer across the pool’s surface, mirrored through water-blurred vision, where perception softens and shifts. The perspective bends as if seen through the eyes of a child suspended at the surface, where even a small pool expands into something vast, mysterious, and immersive. Stone Soul acrylic on found wood, found stone 13 x 7 x 7 I am attracted to working with found objects, and have eventually created quite a few found assemblages as a result. I believe they are sometimes called objet trouvé —and I agree with the consensus that what I like is the way I can take discarded objects and can transform and recontextualize and give new life and new aesthetic value. I especially like the way the “real” is transformed into the “surreal” through my creative process. Triumph (Sarlat-la-Caneda, France) oil on canvas 43.5 x 61.5 Common in Europe since Medieval times, this pollard tree is in the Dordogne region, where prehistoric cave paintings by early man were found. The seemingly brutal cuts of “pollarding” encourage new growth of multiple branches, making them fuller and stronger. It’s a metaphor for the terrible difficulties we may all have experienced. Yet we can recover to find that we are stronger than before and have grown in other ways. Essentially, it’s about victory over brutality. It led me to consider the roles of religion and stereotypical gender roles in trapping us in a rigid societal framework.
