I don’t plan my pieces in advance. They evolve and develop like a deep conversation and close relationship. As this piece was taking shape, I was struck by how it was starting to look like a woman from the back, her shoulders, and her head tilted to one side with long flowing hair. And one of the last things I did was to add all the yellow color in the background. Two days after I finished this piece, Renee Good was murdered by ICE on the streets of Minneapolis less than 10 miles from where I live. Soon after, I remember reading a tribute written by Renee’s wife. She said that Renee was “made of sunshine”, and in that moment I realized the yellow in my piece was that sunshine.
