Triumph (Sarlat-la-Caneda, France)
oil on canvas
43.5 x 61.5
Common in Europe since Medieval times, this pollard tree is in the Dordogne region, where prehistoric cave paintings by early man were found. The seemingly brutal cuts of “pollarding” encourage new growth of multiple branches, making them fuller and stronger. It’s a metaphor for the terrible difficulties we may all have experienced. Yet we can recover to find that we are stronger than before and have grown in other ways. Essentially, it’s about victory over brutality.
