When Words Are Not Enough

Being a late-blooming career commuter from New Jersey to New York City, I started documenting the feet of subway riders. It is tricky to “borrow” someone’s actual facial, or full image (though I have also done that), but no one will complain if you document their feet. Also, feet are very interesting, whether for their style of footwear, gesture, or movement. I had created the skylines in encaustic monotype form a long time ago, having other intentions for them which never materialized. However, they were suggestive enough of the urban landscape to use as a backdrop for the feet, which also (use your imagination) appear as windows in the “buildings.” The buildings are, after all, probably the most frequent destination for all these traveling feet. They are on the subway, on an escalator, holding their bags or props, or supporting a very interesting pair of legs or pants. These variations are endless- to keep my gaze, and also my boredom down in a fairly long commute, composing these shots became a project. Now they stand as a document of urban experience. The Pursuit of Happiness 13 x 13 watercolor pencil on paper Quite often I think visually using symbolism that is, at times, idiosyncratic. In contemplating the idea of happiness I made a woman tumbling head over heels pursuing the blue bird of happiness, becoming a wingless, discombobulated creature with colorful clothes and a shopping bag for a tail, carrying a silver and gold house on her back and smiling broadly. Her head with an unruly hairstyle appears to be a strange, small creature when seen in its current orientation. The enemies of birds and true happiness surround her. They are her untamed nature. The blue Caracal will leap as high as a conclusion based on old trauma. The Green Snake is timid and high strung. The Raven is mischievous and holds grudges. The Sharp-shinned Hawk, the smallest hawk, is intense, aggressive and nervous, a bundle of rage. Spring II 7.5 x 7.5 oil and seed beads on canvas This piece is an exploration of floral forms placed in landscapes that can be forgiving or constraining. The landscapes of stones or surrounding beads are meant to explore the nature of constraint on the growth of the floral form. Does the floral flourish or struggle to live? In my mind the floral wins out and finds a way to exist within the constraints. We live in a landscape that pushes one to finds ways to flourish. My floral forms are a metaphor for human existence. First, she is large, then she is small, then animals talk, then playing cards; it is all SO bewildering--just like the world we wake up to everyday during these perilous times..... Stone Circles I 8 x 8" acrylic and charcoal on canvas As an artist deeply inspired by the organic nature of the world, my work is a dialogue between the present and the ancient past, a conversation carried on by the landscapes that have shaped my being. This series of paintings is a tribute to the stone circles that punctuate the landscapes of the British Isles—an enduring testament to the ingenuity and spirituality of the Neolithic and Bronze Age peoples. In my exploration, I endeavor to distill these ancient formations into their fundamental forms, seeking to unravel the deliberate placements of each stone within elevated situations, valleys, and clearings. Each stroke on the canvas is an homage to these monoliths, which, though their meanings are veiled by time, continue to resonate with a mysterious allure. These standing stones, once the playgrounds of my childhood, held an enigmatic presence that fueled my imagination and curiosity. As they weather the elements, transforming into fragmented ruins, they remain steadfast in my memory as pivotal markers of the untamed wilds of my homeland. Through abstract landscapes, I aim to rekindle the magic of these sites, portraying the stones as bold focal points amidst the verdant escarpments of the South Downs. My paintings are not mere representations but interpretations—a synthesis of history, memory, and the natural world. It is my aspiration that through this series, viewers might be transported to those mystical realms, where past and present converge, and the stones continue to whisper their ancient secrets to those willing to listen. A photographer of city-light, I capture the presence, story, and beauty that is hidden in light. For me light inhabits a form which is revealed in its motion: graceful streaks of color, darkness, and radiance. My signature technique, single in-camera exposure with intentional camera, draws out the power of light to create shape, define space, capturing a cityscape pulsing with life. Movement that is transmuted into painterly photographs where light serves simultaneously as medium, social connection, and visual experience. The story of the light in this image is in its form and its title: Expectant Silence, a period of stillness, a pause, listening for something to happen. Hukuk 9 x 11" gouache and acrylic on canvas I explore the idea of tangibility of spaces that we, as social individuals, pass through daily in our lives. Sometimes we have a feeling of belonging to particular spaces, sometimes consider certain spaces our own, and sometimes feel that we don’t belong anywhere. Since I tend to not have a feeling of belonging to places in my daily life, I seek to grasp onto specific physical environments through paint, allowing them to become palpable in my itinerant life. Robbed In Right Field 10 x 8" clay on wood My aim is to depict a universal, joyful emotion that resonates and hopefully brings up that same emotion in the viewer as well. I incorporate texture, movement, while freezing an actual moment in a game. A fan will recognize the event, while an unfamiliar viewer may recognize the feeling. The Three Laces No.32 5 x 5" acrylic on garments mounted to wood panel glazed with resin In my process, I deconstruct textiles and garments from my wardrobe and vintage collections to create surface assemblages as low-relief grounds for paintings. What emerges is a visual dialogue, evoking human presence, aimed at illuminating renewal and transformation allegorically contributing to the dialogue and conceptual expression. Three Laces is one series of gestural works that join garment remnants from my wardrobe and vintage collection. Works highlight features like lace-edging and seams- their smallness and familiarity seduce and motivate. The “Three Graces” also provide inspiration, denoting a personification of charm, loveliness and creativity. My works reinterpret this symbolism in an authentic, modern way – something wounded, reinvented – enabling a broader awareness of the feminine experience. Unchain My Heart 10 x 13" photography on canvas While driving down the Florida coast, I looked up and saw love locks on an overpass fencing. At the next available opportunity, I turned around and drove back to photograph them. I’ve always been intrigued by the tradition of putting love locks on fences, and this was the first time I had seen this in person. While the fence was not saturated with locks like those in Paris, this romantic tradition, with its symbolism of love, hope, and commitment, intrigued me enough to photograph it. To further the emotional connection to this photograph, I used jeweler’s wire to attach a heart charm to the canvas. This creates another focal point to further draw the viewer’s eye into the photo. While each lock represents the hope of enduring love, the locks in my photograph are rusted from salty sea air and blowing sand. To me, these eroding locks could also represent the breakdown of relationships; therefore the title, “Unchain My Heart.” Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.    

City Dog 8 x 8" oil on canvas City Dog is a small painting about a feeling many people know – being alone in a large city and enjoying it. The city is full of life, noise, and countless stories unfolding behind illuminated windows. This little traveler is not part of any of them tonight. Instead, he stands outside, looking on. His golden fur echoes the warm glow of the windows around him, suggesting a connection between the observer and the lives beyond the glass. Though surrounded by thousands of people, he belongs to no particular place. For me, the painting is about those rare moments when solitude feels less like isolation and more like freedom.
