Airegin (music: Wes Montgomery, Airegin) oil pastel on paper 14 x 14 I created "Airegin" in response to/collaboration with the jazz standard of the same title, played by Wes Montgomery. The lively rhythms, textures and improvisational feel in the song inspired the active forms I used in the painting. The palette always begins with the colors I hear in the music, and I expand as needed to create a cohesive work. As an artist born with perfect pitch and synesthesia, my ability to 'hear' colors is a wellspring of inspiration. My abstract work explores various musical keys, tempi, rhythms, patterns and moods. As I investigate these varieties of musical palettes and textures, I work with a variety of media and techniques to best express the way I see-hear. Legend of Golden Woman oil on canvas 11 x 14 Two hundred years ago, a legendary "gold-boiling city" known as Mangazeya existed in Siberia. Historical accounts mention a massive golden monument standing at the very heart of this city. The monument took the form of a female figure. Many indigenous peoples of northern Siberia lived under a matriarchal social structure and held a deep belief in nature spirits. It is possible that this "Golden Woman"—or *Golden Baba*—embodied the spirit of wealth and prosperity. As life in Siberia evolved and new trade routes emerged, the city began to decline. Eventually, Mangazeya vanished, and with it, the Golden Baba disappeared as well. While the era of matriarchy now survives primarily in memory, the legend of the Golden Baba lives on to this day. Many believe that the golden sculpture was hidden away somewhere, and they continue to search for it in the secluded depths of the Siberian taiga. Yet perhaps they are looking in the wrong place. It is possible that the Golden Baba is, in fact, a symbol of Woman—the very foundation upon which earthly life rests. She represents our grandmothers, mothers, and sisters—those who give life and protect it. I believe, a golden monument to Woman should be erected in every country; that would be truly fair. Chess.Alice etching. zinc plate. black ink on white paper 5 x 6.25 The first intaglio print I can remember seeing accompanied the story of Alice in Wonderland in a beautiful hardback edition, received as a gift from my Grandfather. As a child, I fell in love with the drawings and use of line to express form, shape, and movement. Still inspired by the classic tale, I created a series of mezzotint plates representing the beasts of Wonderland as seen through the darkness of memory. I continued that theme with this image, etched into a polished zinc plate and refined using engraving, drypoint, and spit bite techniques. Depicting an imagined scene from the other side of the looking glass, I sought to evoke a sense of ennui from the characters left in the quiet evening after Alice has departed. Pendĕre collage on canvas panel 12 x 12 Pendĕre is built through accumulation — of surface, gesture, memory, and response. Constructed from papers that were hand-painted, stained, textured, and altered by the artist before assembly, the collage embraces imperfection, erosion, and layering as essential elements of its visual language. Each fragment carries its own history while contributing to a larger emotional and rhythmic whole. The composition shifts between order and disruption. Gridded passages and repeated rectangular forms suggest architecture, mapping, or systems of containment, while darker gestural marks interrupt that structure with a sense of movement and instability. Areas of luminous rust, blue, and muted green emerge from an otherwise restrained palette like moments of resonance within silence. The title, Pendĕre, evokes both “to hang” and “to weigh,” suggesting suspension, uncertainty, and reflection. Circular forms appear as anchors or counterweights within the composition, holding tension between gravity and release. The work invites the viewer to move slowly across the surface, discovering relationships between texture, edge, opacity, and mark. Though abstract, the collage is rooted in lived experience and intuitive response. Fragments are layered much like memory itself — partial, altered over time, and continuously recontextualized. Pendĕre does not seek a fixed narrative; instead, it offers a contemplative space where balance and fragmentation coexist, and where meaning emerges through sustained looking. To Market basswood sculpture 14 x 14 x 8 I was inspired to carve TO MARKET after observing women throughout the world carrying heavy loads on their heads with apparent ease. For these women, transporting workloads in this manner is not only efficient but also a necessity of daily life—in both rural and urban environments. Within this necessity lies its beauty. My sculpture aims to highlight the quiet dignity and gracefulness of these women at work. My creative process began with making a small clay maquette of 3 women with varied gaits. I chose basswood as the carving material because its subtle grain pattern would not detract from the overall form. I also incorporated the base into the sculpture to convey the women’s connection with the ground they walk on. The final sculpture is sanded but unstained, my way of emphasizing the unadorned simplicity of the subject matter. Morning Light digital collage 14 x 11 In my work, I explore the relationship between memory, emotion, and sense of place through contemporary landscape photography. I capture the scenes of my immediate surroundings and translate them into soft, ethereal, dreamlike vistas. My images often feature trees, distant hills, pink skies, children, tactile atmosphere and the moon. They convey an existence that extends beyond the physical realm and takes the viewer into my own dream world. My work has often been described as incandescent in both definitions of the word: glowing with luminosity and full of emotion and passion. When You Sit Quietly You See Many Things acrylic on paper 13 x 13 An ongoing theme in my work is the interconnectedness of all life and that the wellbeing of humanity is directly related to the health of our natural world. With living in the woods in Maine and traveling extensively, I have had the gift of experiencing nature in many parts of the world. This painting was done in a small village in Japan while my family and I were traveling around the world. While sitting a very long time with my daughter on the side of a river we were able to observe this graceful egret. I strive to convey through color and brushwork what my direct experience is in a place. Over the past ten years, I have moved from realism to full abstraction. This painting is my early stages of abstraction in which I was loosening up by using a palette knife. My work comes from my heart and seeks to offer healing and hope. The Mermaid mixed media 14 x 11 This piece depicts an alluring mermaid sitting on a rock at sea. Made of a wood art board, paper decoupage, polymer clay, acrylic paints, Swarovski crystals, and sealed with matte polyurethane. The artist created unique images, including background decoupage paper, using text-to-image AI. Images were printed onto water soluble paper using a laser jet printer, then transferred to polymer clay. After washing away the paper, images were cut out using an Xacto knife, then baked. Clay images were hand painted after baking for enhancement. The wood art board was covered on all visible sides in the artist-designed decoupage paper. Artist considers herself a storyteller and uses symbolism in her art. Unique style is a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Medieval, Contemporary, and Mexican folk art. One of only a few exhibiting polymer clay & mixed media artists to use a similar distinctive technique. Her art is her legacy, and she wishes to leave a positive legacy. Curiosity oil on linen canvas 12 x 12 Magpies are seasonal residents at our farm in SW Colorado. They are widely considered to be very intelligent and close observation, proves this to be true. They are opportunistic and clever food gatherers. "Curiosity" was created to highlight the magpie, known for its intelligence and curiosity, and to symbolize communication and connection. In order to capture the serene beauty of nature through the lens of a striking magpie, I placed him perching gracefully on a branch. The bird's vibrant blue and white plumage contrast beautifully against the muted background. Delicate branches add a touch of elegance, and create a harmonious balance between the subject and its environment. I love the soft, muted palette of the petals with the burst of orange-red at the center. The tangle of branches with so many stages of blooms gave me a real compositional challenge. Although Lavender means Distrust, for me it is honest and true and helps to purify my mind and body. photograph 8 x 6 I grow herbs and flowers and have used my garden as an escape from current events. The Window That Held the Night No.1 photograph 11 x 14 The Window That Held the Night No. 1 was photographed at the Lunar Faire on a night when the moon was a thin crescent. Its faint light offered little illumination, allowing the artificial glow of the fair to shape the scene. Two shadows cross the weathered boards of an old barn. Their bodies are not visible. Only the forms they leave behind appear, stretched and altered by the light that holds them for a moment. At the center of the wall is a dark window. It does not reveal an interior. It simply holds the night. It absorbs light and resists reflection, becoming a still point within the composition. The shadows fall toward it without touching, as if drawn into the same field of tension. The worn surface of the barn carries the marks of time and exposure. It becomes a ground for these passing forms, holding them briefly before they shift and disappear. A quiet exchange emerges between permanence and impermanence, structure and fleeting presence. While the Faire is filled with sound and color, this image comes from its quieter edge, where light and darkness shape one another and absence takes on form. Landscape 105 oil on canvas 12.5 x 12.5 The Earth’s diverse surface is fascinating. The vegetative environments invite viewers to visit a place. Local light and atmosphere affect the plant life that thrives, the colors we see and experience of mood and energy. These paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between painterly realism and abstract passages. Raised in rural Wisconsin and moving to Florida and Texas in my first thirteen years piqued my interest in diverse landscapes and flora. Whether a mass of color blur or the focal point, each is recording its environment and time. My creative practice, focusing on materials and process, reflects my chemical engineering background. The bold use of initial marks that swirl through the backgrounds of compositions, echo and amplify the rhythms of the naturally created elements. Visual density from transparent to opaque are leveraged in creating organic textures. Color is a vehicle to convey energy from nature. This work is my attempt to keep what time has already taken. My Summer Friend watercolor, Inks, oil sticks, sgraffito on clayboard 14 x 11 Each summer, I return to my homeland and spend five weeks drawing and painting my natural surroundings and its creatures, especially the sheep on the Nature Reserve behind our house. Clayboard is particularly suitable for showing the various textures because it takes almost any medium. The Older Couple (The Extinct Birds) soft pastel on paper 14 x 12 This painting brings together two stories - my grandparents’ life and the memory of extinct birds. My grandparents on my mother's side were very much in love when they were young. They birthed and raised seven children together, and built a beautiful house in suburbs near Issyk-Kul' lake in Kyrgyzstan, where i was lucky to spend few summers of my childhood. I was very young then, but I remember them being older and rather quiet people. They didn't talk much, they were very kind and solid. They had a great history of their own. As story told, there was great love, big dreams, triumphs and falls, and they had every that every human being go through throughout their lives... But they are done now. They left this world as all beings do, leaving behind their herd, quiet memories and a few portraits of them. So did vanish these beautiful birds, whose images I saw in a museum of natural history, the old exhibition. These birds have been extinct now for more than 200 years. The Night Brings Freedom collage: rice, gelee, Mulberry papers, acrylic paint and markers, fabric and thread 10 x 15 After 4 years studying painting at Tyler School of Art in the 1970’s, life led me into a private practice in psychology. My desire to return to art never left me. Ten years ago, after experiencing significant losses, I rekindled my passion for art. I feel whole again and continue helping others heal, along with my healing through art. I create abstract paintings and collages exploring grief/loss. In the process I uncover joy, strength, courage and resilience. Layering, blending and glazing shapes and colors keep those no longer here visible and remembered. Drawing in lines bonds me to others. These lines remind me of Kintsugi, a Japanese art of mending broken pottery into something more beautiful and resilient. I intentionally show staples and ripped paper- grief is messy and my art mirrors this. Making art gives me purpose, endless possibilities and awakens an excitement that will last me a lifetime.
