Ice on the Ground, Boston watercolor 16 x 16 When I'm not able to travel to cold places, I feel lucky that I live in a part of the country that has a very good cold season. During my early morning walks, I take photos of the ice at my feet that has formed overnight and has caught all sorts of leaves, sticks, rocks, and other natural detritus in it. Geoff the Blue Jay fiber art 8 x 12 My work combines textile, stitching, and found materials to create layered assemblages that move between wall-based imagery and sculptural form. Through fabric collage, embroidery, patchwork construction, and soft sculpture, I build immersive environments and hand-crafted creatures that exist somewhere between observation, memory, and imagination. Nature serves as both inspiration and point of departure. Oceans, deserts, forests, birds, and animals appear throughout the work, not as direct representations, but as elements within imagined ecosystems shaped through texture, fragmentation, and narrative. I am drawn to the tactile language of fiber as fabric can suggest terrain, skin, history, and emotional presence simultaneously. Visible seams, frayed edges, and layered surfaces remain intentionally exposed throughout my process. These marks of construction function as evidence of transformation and repair, suggesting that both landscapes and living beings are formed through accumulation, adaptation, and change. The patchwork structures within the sculptural animals especially reflect an interest in resilience and identity assembled from fragments. My framed works often resemble windows into contained worlds, while the sculptures extend those worlds into physical space. Together, the pieces create an interconnected visual language where creature and environment inform one another. Ultimately, my work invites close looking and tactile awareness. Through layered materials and detailed construction, I aim to create spaces and forms that feel intimate, immersive, and open to personal interpretation. Oceanview watercolor 10 x 8 I've always been interested in and inspired by water, how it moves and flows, and have tried to express how it makes me feel in paint. For this painting I was thinking about the night sky over water and the vastness of both. Many transparent washes were applied in order to intensify and vary the color palette. I generally take anywhere from a few weeks to months to complete a painting, as I like to step away and return to a work with a fresh eye for correcting and improving my vision. Fence2, When Girls Couldn't Play 24 x 18 In the span of a lifetime, one can only imagine, with the help of learned history, the span of 250 years. The submission here is a moment in one woman’s lifetime, a fraction of that history. The image is an intimate moment on the ballfield, focused on an attending sister, or daughter. The woman’s/girl's perspective is perhaps less noticed: sensitive and also seen or heard differently from the boy with the bat. Printmaking is also an intimate medium- a transference from a block or plate to paper and a transference of feelings into images, whether etched, carved in linoleum, or glued in collagraph. The joy of printmaking of original hand-pulled prints is that of the partially controlled and partly surprising result once run through the press. Women Voting digital 13 x 18 framed size: 14.25 x 19.25 My own grandmother was born in 1912, before women in America were allowed to vote. I based this artwork on a historic 1912 American Press Association photograph that is now in the public domain, of a suffrage parade in New York City. I am inspired that public demonstrations such as this one were an effective part of the broad picture in securing women’s right to vote, as well as the fact that the baby pictured in this image is of a similar age as my own grandmother. I don’t take for granted the hard-won rights women have gained just within a few generations, and realize the efforts continue to this day. This image celebrates the many women who fought to win the right to vote. My creative process utilized mixed media including digital media, pen and ink, and digital printing on watercolor paper, as I made intuitive decisions about distortion, visual closure, white space, pattern, and line. I grew up through and beyond the digital revolution, and am comfortable using digital media in the same manner one might use a graphite pencil or a paintbrush – it is just another tool for artmaking, in my opinion. Curiosity oil on linen canvas 12 x 12 Magpies are seasonal residents at our farm in SW Colorado. They are widely considered to be very intelligent and close observation, proves this to be true. They are opportunistic and clever food gatherers. "Curiosity" was created to highlight the magpie, known for its intelligence and curiosity, and to symbolize communication and connection. In order to capture the serene beauty of nature through the lens of a striking magpie, I placed him perching gracefully on a branch. The bird's vibrant blue and white plumage contrast beautifully against the muted background. Delicate branches add a touch of elegance, and create a harmonious balance between the subject and its environment. The perspective, taken close up, looks somewhat exaggerated, bringing the foreground tree forward while the second recedes, partially obscured behind it. A muted, misty background reduces contrast without feeling heavy, showing a whisper of the forms in the back. I was drawn to the quiet presence of the trees and the way they felt almost human, sharing the same experience in the damp, enveloping stillness of the day. The first year we were able to go in to the museum and I was impressed by the statue, First Wave. I decided to add ghost images of some of the statue behind our images. The Older Couple (The Extinct Birds) soft pastel on paper 14 x 12 This painting brings together two stories - my grandparents’ life and the memory of extinct birds. My grandparents on my mother's side were very much in love when they were young. They birthed and raised seven children together, and built a beautiful house in suburbs near Issyk-Kul' lake in Kyrgyzstan, where i was lucky to spend few summers of my childhood. I was very young then, but I remember them being older and rather quiet people. They didn't talk much, they were very kind and solid. They had a great history of their own. As story told, there was great love, big dreams, triumphs and falls, and they had every that every human being go through throughout their lives... But they are done now. They left this world as all beings do, leaving behind their herd, quiet memories and a few portraits of them. So did vanish these beautiful birds, whose images I saw in a museum of natural history, the old exhibition. These birds have been extinct now for more than 200 years. These chickens run loose as do the tourists who frequent the street. It reminds me of the women who seemed to be gossiping as they walked. The Mermaid mixed media 14 x 11 This piece depicts an alluring mermaid sitting on a rock at sea. Made of a wood art board, paper decoupage, polymer clay, acrylic paints, Swarovski crystals, and sealed with matte polyurethane. The artist created unique images, including background decoupage paper, using text-to-image AI. Images were printed onto water soluble paper using a laser jet printer, then transferred to polymer clay. After washing away the paper, images were cut out using an Xacto knife, then baked. Clay images were hand painted after baking for enhancement. The wood art board was covered on all visible sides in the artist-designed decoupage paper. Artist considers herself a storyteller and uses symbolism in her art. Unique style is a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Medieval, Contemporary, and Mexican folk art. One of only a few exhibiting polymer clay & mixed media artists to use a similar distinctive technique. Her art is her legacy, and she wishes to leave a positive legacy. She echoes Alice Paul, suffragist, strategist, and architect of the 19th Amendment who stood at the White House gates for eighteen months in deliberate, weaponized silence, her stillness a gendered political performance against the systemic oppression of disenfranchisement. Due South Magazine Paul was arrested, imprisoned, and force-fed during hunger strikes. She endured all of it without surrender. This figure carries that same armored quiet. The composition reflects the eternal tension between self-protection and exposure, the moonlike orb and scattered shards suggesting inner landscapes in flux, a moment suspended between decision and action. She is not hiding behind the glass. She is forged from it. For 250 years, women have known that sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is meet the world's gaze and let your presence speak louder than any words could. Sam paper on canvas 12 x 9 I attended the outdoor, evening gig where this young man was playing keyboard. I was inspired by the halo effect created by the hot pink stage lighting behind him, as well as the movement created by the breeze. The subject matter in my work varies widely, because as in this case, I am often taken with a scene or an image and immediately wonder if I can capture it in paper, which is my only medium. There is no paint in any of my work. All the color is derived from the papers, in a non-traditional collage technique. Sometimes a single paper is just the right color, but usually several layers are required to achieve the right hue and intensity. Still Standing photograph 10 x 15 When I walk along the beach, I cannot help but wonder whether the pier will ever be reattached. The structure appears so very strong, especially when walking underneath. It is nearly impossible to imagine it being halved by nature. Both halves seem to exist on their own though they were created as one. I set up my tripod switching from place to place to enable the viewer to catch the 'cut' and wonder about the strength of each piece to prevail without the other.
