Like Native American "dream catcher," portals offer a landscape of positive energies surrounded by edges that can snag and encumber the viewer as they reach for the magic in the center. Portals reflect opportunities for a quiet, meditative, and peaceful space encumbered by unknown obstacles, dangers, and barriers. One must focus on the safety and quietness in the portal's center, while also navigating the broken, seen and unseen impediments that may interfere with the journey forward.

When I'm observing something, I'm not simply noticing the object or the landscape before me, I see the dance of colors in color, the lyricism of line, and the play of shapes through value and space. We are surrounded by sublime beauty in the mundane as much as in the extraordinary, and it's this transitory beauty that I am compelled to capture. Aiming to make my work accessible and easy to understand, I prefer to create representational work.

Works on Paper 36 x 36 in. This piece, Windblown, is part of a series called Transitions. When I started this series I was touched by the lament of “women of a certain age”, feeling that they were invisible, overlooked, and insignificant. This series is my attempt to visually capture this time in a woman’s life as an ending as well as a new beginning as the sunflower emits its seeds and begins again. The subject of this work is an aged, dried sunflower. I used Chinese ink to explore the transient nature of life and the strength of that transience. Through writings and bold marks traveling in and out of the layers of oil and cold wax, Asheville artist Cindy Walton captures action, energy and quiet musings of nature in her paintings. colored pencil 22 x 16" My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family and the traditions we share, or nature including rivers, lakes, rocks, and plants. Nature work is usually inspired by the lake area in northern Wisconsin where we have a family lake house, and by the gardens and trees of the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, or by public gardens I visit on trips. I want the viewer to see the beauty of those places, to smell the scent of flowers and hear the rush of a river depicted in my work. Winter's End is inspired by a river near my lake house just as the long, cold, dark winter thaws into spring. Realism is the style that I have embraced for my work. Perhaps the truth is that it embraced me, flowing naturally from my hand. I have worked in oils, acrylics, and watercolors and occasionally still do, but colored pencil is the medium I have chosen for most of my work. What started as a lifestyle choice (pencils are clean and easily transportable from primary residence to lake house) became an artistic choice. I’m a control freak - free and loose is NOT my style - so colored pencils are the perfect medium for me. Their layering and blending capabilities, the transparency of some colors, and vibrant pigments help me convey the interplay of color and light in my subject matter. At times, I use colors that are more brilliant or saturated than what I see in nature, and this is the case with Winter's End. I want the viewer to feel the coming of spring even as the snow sparkles on the rocks. That color pleases me, and I hope it pleases the viewer. color pencils on Strathmore Bristol Smooth 400 Series 17 x 13" Mushroom foraging is a popular Czech tradition and it’s one that my family (I am of Czech descent) enjoys. Chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, black trumpets and, of course, morels are our favorites. The basket of morels in my piece was inspired by mushrooms we picked on family land. I started looking at the photos I took that day. My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family, the traditions we share, or nature so I decided the textures of the mushrooms and basket would make a fantastic colored pencil work. The details were daunting and required patience I don’t always have, but the result was worth the effort!
