Gathering felled branches and sticks on hikes in the mountains, walking in the woods that surround my home, or exploring neighborhoods, fills me with joy and awe of the natural world. In preparation for carving, I am intoxicated by the texture, the smell, and the snap when reducing the length of the stick. oil, colored pencil 17 x 11 x 1.5" My wish is to make connections between things I understand and things I don't. After my daughter's death, I read about the ancient tabernacle in Jerusalem. It had curtains of scarlet, purple, and indigo. I painted circles, triangles, and squares using these colors. In the middle of the painting I placed the letters of her name--b i d u-- copied numerous times onto a white rectangle. Why? I can't say. I enjoy building a controlled environment, playing with contrasting shapes and colors, working with reflections and transparencies, and creating a sense of drama with light. oil on gallery wrapped canvas 20 x 20" I am quite taken by trees in nature. I live in Maine for most of the seasons and am always finding new excitement in paintingmy surroundings. Birch trees are my laborite because they have fascinating patterns in the bark and branches. My career as a textile designer has influenced how I see the patterns. My other strength is color. mixed media painting using collaged hand painted papers 22 x 22 x 2" Excited by the way colorful shapes fit together, how a line on the surface can cause movement, the surprise of embedded bits of pattern -- my work is playful and energetic. I am almost completely concerned with how the elements of art come together to make a strong composition. Sometimes compared to aerial views, puzzle pieces locked together and urban grids, in my work, these are qualities sensed rather than seen. While the result is abstract, every piece begins with a reference – a concrete memory, sensation or even a photograph of a place I have traveled. mixed media 20 x 20 x 1" Playfulness is a sneaky way to allow the audience the freedom to enjoy new ideas. I use humor and whimsy to create unexpected associations that people can recognize. Bringing their own unique experiences and personal connections to my art, they are delighted when they feel a particular artwork is speaking directly to them. The story is something they can personally relate to, just like I do. I particularly enjoy the look in the eyes of an observer when they realize they are seeing a familiar tale, something from their own life, sometimes even a memory. wax, pastel, ink 21 x 17" The drawing was done in presence of the model through superimposition of multiple fast poses in one session. The drawing was later completed through emergence of the figure. This drawing is part of a series of drawings which will be used for the production of a short stop motion animation. An abstract conceptual artist, my hope is to sustain conversations about our common needs and desires as a species, including companionship, safety, food, shelter, purpose, joy, understanding, compassion, wonder, belonging, comfort, and love. watercolor & pastel on paper 8.5 x 1.5 x .2" Persephone’s Garden series explores themes of Women’s identities and sacred space held by women. Using the metaphor of the garden before Persephone was abducted by Hades, and historically cared for by women of leisure and/or servitude, and reimagining it as as space for safety, growth, reinvention. Bordering on abstraction and recalling American Impressionism, color worlds are invented and discharged with subtlety and nuance. cut & shredded magazine paper 11 x 14" This collage is part of a series about the condition of asylum seekers and the parallel with the religous pilgrims of the past. Both traveled great distances on foot. Both believed in the existence of sanctuary based on faith, the faith that their hope of salvation existed in a physical location. Both are confronted with perils of travel and some never arrive at their hoped for destinations. The parallels reveal that suffering is a part of the human condition historically and in modernity. We like to believe in the advent of modernity that such suffering should be a thing of the past. It's up to all of us to make that change to minimalize the suffering of our fellow beings. acrylic painting 20 x 1.5 x 24" A blank canvas provides an opportunity to build connections between the chaos of the outside world and the deep human response it evokes. Sometimes my artwork is quite literal, capturing the light and beauty of a particular moment. Moving away from that moment, the work evolves into a more abstract representation of memory and emotion. ​I've always sought solace in nature, and as a Master Gardener and beekeeper, I've witnessed the delicate balance between ecosystems and the importance of conserving natural resources. I feel compelled to capture the beauty of this interdependence in a meaningful and expressive way, communicating the importance of environmental sustainability. acrylic on cradled wood panel 14 x 11" My practice as an artist grows from the direct observation and immersion of drawing on location, where I uncover the energy and memories that linger. The drawings become a point of departure for my abstract paintings, where I engage with the shapes between form, exposing the residual layers of sensation. Abandoned industrial spaces are of particular interest to me, as the grounds of these former factories are healed by the weeds and shrubs of ruderal growth and the forces of nature, which slowly transform toxic materials back to the earth. Ruderal Growth 1 is part of a series based on the abandoned brick factories of the Hudson Valley area of New York State. acrylic, latex, and graphite on canvas 24 x 24 x 1" Printemps is one of the first pieces I painted in my Abstracted Memories series.. It was painted in the spring of 2022 after being reunited with possessions of mine stored for decades. I had recently moved back to the East Coast from Northern California. The ensuing flood of emotions, memories and the sensations of touching objects and seeing again photographs of family members who had died even before the items were stored away, was overwhelming. Printemps is in honor of my grandmother Mamie, an artist and performer who raised me when I was a child and died when I was 14 years old.
