New Members Exhibition 2023

November 6 to December 8, 2023

  • watercolor on paper 8 x 8" My artwork is inspired by the life I see in things like stains and cracks on sidewalks, La Marchande d'oeufs is based on a crack from a sidewalk in my home city of Providence. Like all of my watercolors, this one is characterized style by minimal lines and childlike shading. My process is not defined by preconceived ideas on my part, but rather one in which I listen to the stains and the cracks that call out to me.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • acrylic paint 14 x 11 x 1" Inspired by the French artists Chardin and Oudry 's raw meat paintings, this painting employs a trompe-loeil technique. The leg of lamb is also symbolic. It is created to remind the viewers the cruelty of life,It also sends the message of Memento Mori. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil 16 x 20 x 1" I'm often drawn to working in the tradition of still life. I enjoy building a controlled environment, playing with contrasting shapes and colors, working with reflections and transparencies, and creating a sense of drama with light. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photo collage on Canson Platine Fiber paper 22 x 17" Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on linen 20 x 20 x .75" The Finger Lakes Region of New York State provides me with endless meditative landscapes of vineyards, beautiful and varied lakes, big skies and farmland. Upland Pasture reflects my love of landscape and my love of oil paint and the infinite and subtle combinations produced by mixing and juxtaposing colors.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • color photoscreenprint 20 x 28 x 1" The Hudson River is an exciting place! This work celebrates the Hudson and is from a series of prints on rowing from the point of view of an involved participant on the river. The view is from the second seat from the in a four person (quad) scull and is of the rowers taking a break. The piece is from a series of prints on rowing from the point of view of a participant. The on-river iconic scene includes The Walkway Over the Hudson and the F.D.R. Mid-Hudson Bridge in the background. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media painting using collaged hand painted papers 22 x 22 x 2" Excited by the way colorful shapes fit together, how a line on the surface can cause movement, the surprise of embedded bits of pattern -- my work is playful and energetic. I am almost completely concerned with how the elements of art come together to make a strong composition. Sometimes compared to aerial views, puzzle pieces locked together and urban grids, in my work, these are qualities sensed rather than seen. While the result is abstract, every piece begins with a reference – a concrete memory, sensation or even a photograph of a place I have traveled. For viewers, the experience is about creativity and curiosity, moving in close to see the layers, and asking themselves “what is this?” Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylics on mixed media paper mounted to wooden cradle 7 x 7 1.25" Abstract art for me is a chance to invoke a wild, primal and unconventional style of expression full of color. I start each work with no real direction or plan and as the paint hits the canvas the story comes to life. Whether that story comes from a life experience or something affecting the world today, each work will become a window into a narrative once completed. My wish for whomever glances upon my art is to temporarily leave the conventional and glance into a gateway of a vibrant story.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • acrylic paint, gold & copper leaves 24 x 24 x 1.5" Heavy Metal to me is a telling of who I used to be as an artist, and who I have become. Beginning over a decade ago with art deco and steampunk designs. Evolving now into my own personal style of maximalist abstract expressionist works. I used to be overly concerned about perfection, and fine lines, where now I can embrace an unfinished, rustic background. There is perfection in imperfection. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic painting 20 x 1.5 x 24" A blank canvas provides an opportunity to build connections between the chaos of the outside world and the deep human response it evokes. Sometimes my artwork is quite literal, capturing the light and beauty of a particular moment. Moving away from that moment, the work evolves into a more abstract representation of memory and emotion. I've always sought solace in nature, and as a Master Gardener and beekeeper, I've witnessed the delicate balance between ecosystems and the importance of conserving natural resources. I feel compelled to capture the beauty of this interdependence in a meaningful and expressive way, communicating the importance of environmental sustainability. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil, colored pencil 17 x 11 x 1.5" My wish is to make connections between things I understand and things I don't. After my daughter's death, I read about the ancient tabernacle in Jerusalem. It had curtains of scarlet, purple, and indigo. I painted circles, triangles, and squares using these colors. In the middle of the painting I placed the letters of her name--b i d u-- copied numerous times onto a white rectangle. Why? I can't say. But this painting evokes a feeling of the sublime for me at a time of upheaval and loss. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media on textile; screen-printed & machine-stitched 20 x 20" After five years of persistent statewide drought, rampant wildfires seemed to consume much of the formerly spectacular California landscape. Shortly thereafter the rains came, and formerly barren areas could not absorb the water. Such a paradox… too little water, too much water, in just three months’ time. Climate change is real. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 18 x 18 x 1.5" Through my paintings, I’ve become attentive to the splendid drama of my everyday world. How the wind can create a ripple in a pond, a flock of birds descending on a field, or how sunlight can illuminate the side of a building are small miracles that happen all around us. In my latest series of oil paintings called Old Souls, I have paid homage to the trees I’m familiar with as I progress through my daily life and work. I thought of these paintings more as portraits of friends than as landscape paintings. I believe nature is intertwined with our lives and has an awareness of our human activity. I find this feeling most prevalent with trees. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • inkjet print of photographed & digitally altered cut-out collage using transparent paper over a light box 10 x 8" I work with women images, creative colorful women in abstract shapes and light; this work illustrates women’s inner strength and balance. As Above So Below. Moving energy is an important skill. Feeling in your gut and projecting that feeling out is powerful. Holding up your power to present to the world is engaging. Our ideas are ready to materialize in the world.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • soft pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes Touch sanded paper 18.25 x 13.375" My work is inspired by objects and scenes from the natural world. I work mainly in soft pastels, and watercolor. When I'm observing something, I'm not simply noticing the object or the landscape before me, I see the dance of colors in color, the lyricism of line, and the play of shapes through value and space. We are surrounded by sublime beauty in the mundane as much as in the extraordinary, and it's this transitory beauty that I am compelled to capture. Aiming to make my work accessible and easy to understand, I prefer to create representational work.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • color pencils on Strathmore Bristol Smooth 400 Series 17 x 13" Mushroom foraging is a popular Czech tradition and it’s one that my family (I am of Czech descent) enjoys. Chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, black trumpets and, of course, morels are our favorites. The basket of morels in my piece was inspired by mushrooms we picked on family land. I started looking at the photos I took that day. My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family, the traditions we share, or nature so I decided the textures of the mushrooms and basket would make a fantastic colored pencil work. The details were daunting and required patience I don’t always have, but the result was worth the effort!

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • oil on canvas 17.25 x 17.25 x 2" I have always enjoyed studying the many subtleties to be found in nature. Color variations, details in objects, as well as the juxtaposition of objects all interest me greatly. In addition, I find symbolism in art and the various moods created by lighting to be very intriguing. But most of all, it is the challenge of combining these and other elements in the painting process that attracts me to create. Bringing awareness to endangered and threatened species is very important to me. I’m continually striving to bring elements together that invoke a sense of thoughtfulness towards nature and how we affect it. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • archival paper, photographs, & adhesive 8 x 9.75 x 1.5" Nature-Tecture #3 joins together architectural forms with plant life – thus the play on words in the title. As the third in this Nature-Tecture series, which searches for harmony between that which is manmade and the natural world, this piece pushes further on than its predecessors (#1 and #2), Here, I felt compelled to place the plants bursting out from behind these manmade forms. For me, they send a message: that they are present, vital, growing. This begs the question: What are we doing to protect plants, animals, oceans – and ourselves? And, what is preventing us from taking the action necessary to secure the health of our planet? Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • punch needle embroidery 30 x 24 x 1" In an effort to reject the insinuations often thrust upon the female form, this work presents a highly rigid and resolutely geometric portrait of a woman, without a stroke of curvature. This work's depiction of a fractured facial profile aims to highlight the oftentimes nonexistent boundary between one’s ability to feel beautiful and overt sexualization when externally perceived. By abstracting identifiable features and removing individual characteristics to varying degrees, this work re-examines our perceptions on “appropriateness”. My mission is to create broadly familiar subjects that reflect femininity as part of the Whole rather than the Individual. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on wood with graphite 18 x 16" Acrylic layering on wood with graphic line work. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • encaustic on wool, silk, paper, & cotton 5.5 x 9.5 x 1" Dot Bergen is fascinated by processes that reference the passage of time; nature profoundly influences her work. She has always been captivated with mineralization, fossilization, weathering and erosion. There is beauty and power in change, but there is also a sense of vulnerability, the idea that nothing is constant. "Creating a temporal landscape of an ongoing process encourages the viewer to contemplate the past conditions contributing to this portrayal." In Dead Man's Party, Dot explores the fragility of the human relationship with the ever-changing natural world. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic paint, mediums, and varnish 30 x 30 x 2" Remember when we could just play? The idea of endless hours of sunlit fun, without the concern of being caught in the dark, has gone into the dream world of Land of the Midnight Sun. What if we lived in Fairbanks, Alaska? Would it be different? Would we play with abandon after work, as the sun found us hiking, running, and exploring far into the passage of the day? I imagined creatures, large and small, once hidden by shadow, now slithering and sliding, rolling and romping. The sunshine phenomenon was used to bring fantasy and a cornucopia of treasures, as a reminder that out of shadows comes the light of fun and laughter.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • watercolor paper handcarved with scalpels 15 x 19 x .1" My bas relief paper sculptures allow me to explore the subtle nuances of light and shadow, as well as the delicate interplay between positive and negative space. Fauna features an enchanting array of florals, fauna, and wild flowers that have a touch of whimsy. Here I use watercolor paper, and scalpels to carve into the paper. I rarely plan in detail what I will sculpt and prefer to start and flow. Each piece is unique and takes multiple hours. I like to offset the rhythmic and repetitive patterns with a little chaos, opting for a dynamic and occasionally irregular composition, as if to convey the petals on paper breaking free from the substrate that binds them.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • watercolor painting on paper 9 x 6" Emi Sisk, born and raised by the sea in Japan and Hawaii, is an award-winning artist known for her distinctive paintings and transformative digital photography. Her work varies from vibrant watercolors to abstract digital compositions, reflecting her profound connection to nature. Emi manifests her commitment to environmental sustainability not only through her 'Save The Corals' collection but also by completing a course on climate change at Harvard University. She is a member of Griffin Museum of Photography, Cambridge Art Association, NLAPW (National League of American Pen Women) and DACOR, an organization of foreign service professionals.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • photography printed on aluminum 16 x 20 x 1" My passion for photography stems from capturing a beautiful moment in time while holding the feeling that moment evokes. I intend these images to capture the raw, beauty of nature to portray both the calm, peaceful side and depict the power in our natural world. For me, photography is more than taking beautiful images - it’s about capturing the emotion and essence of a single moment and sharing that with the world. The photographs that I share are of locations that have brought me joy, peace, and comfort.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • soft pastel on sanded paper 25 x 18" I love capturing the essence of life with my art. I have a unique approach to colors. I paint with rich and pure pigments, often without mixing. My work depicts the subtle lights, reflections and hidden hues on the subjects. Every artwork I create is inspired from life through an imaginative approach. My preferred mediums is soft pastel. I was attracted to the colorful outfit of model in this painting. Her calmness and the bright colors created an interesting contrast, as if she was mesmorized in thoughts. My goal was to capture the essence of this moment.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • fine pencil drawing and watercolor on Arches Watercolor paper 12 x 18 x 1" Drawing and painting watercolors is something I have loved to do. As an artist, I work hard to develop paintings that speak both to me and to others. Making art creates an opportunity evoke emotions and feelings and to transport the viewer to another “place”. For the last 20 years, I have been working with watercolors. The beauty of the medium is its luminosity and transparency. There are many subjects and themes I have been interested in over the years. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • compressed charcoal & charcoal pencils on extra rough charcoal paper 12 x 9" The lady in this portrait is from an image that was handed to me during a discussion about Edwardian costume. The image was handed to me as I fell in love with the Edwardian hat and jacket, but it was the sitters eyes that compelled me to draw it. She had a bit of spunk and impishness in her glance, underneath that hat. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • watercolor & pastel on paper 8.5 x 1.5 x .2" Persephone’s Garden series explores themes of Women’s identities and sacred space held by women. Using the metaphor of the garden before Persephone was abducted by Hades, and historically cared for by women of leisure and/or servitude, and reimagining it as as space for safety, growth, reinvention. Bordering on abstraction and recalling American Impressionism, color worlds are invented and discharged with subtlety and nuance. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic, latex, and graphite on canvas 24 x 24 x 1" Printemps is one of the first pieces I painted in my Abstracted Memories series.. It was painted in the spring of 2022 after being reunited with possessions of mine stored for decades. I had recently moved back to the East Coast from Northern California. The ensuing flood of emotions, memories and the sensations of touching objects and seeing again photographs of family members who had died even before the items were stored away, was overwhelming. Printemps is in honor of my grandmother Mamie, an artist and performer who raised me when I was a child and died when I was 14 years old. She sewed her dresses with beautiful fabrics, and loved flowers and bright colors. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • cut & shredded magazine paper 11 x 14" This collage is part of a series about the condition of asylum seekers and the parallel with the religous pilgrims of the past. Both traveled great distances on foot. Both believed in the existence of sanctuary based on faith, the faith that their hope of salvation existed in a physical location. Both are confronted with perils of travel and some never arrive at their hoped for destinations. The parallels reveal that suffering is a part of the human condition historically and in modernity. We like to believe in the advent of modernity that such suffering should be a thing of the past. It's up to all of us to make that change to minimalize the suffering of our fellow beings. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 16 x 20 x 1" Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 12 x 16" I live near the Hudson River and have walked along it in every season and kind of light. One day I saw this pier from an angle that reminded me of Magritte – so how could I resist it? There were many other things I loved about this image - the contrast of textures in the metal pier, rough stone wall and tall grasses; the glow of the sand uncovered by the tide; and the distant skyline. I used glazes to create the glowing sand, and emphasized the horizontal constructions to contrast with the organic foliage form.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • mixed media 20 x 20 x 1" Playfulness is a sneaky way to allow the audience the freedom to enjoy new ideas. I use humor and whimsy to create unexpected associations that people can recognize. Bringing their own unique experiences and personal connections to my art, they are delighted when they feel a particular artwork is speaking directly to them. The story is something they can personally relate to, just like I do. I particularly enjoy the look in the eyes of an observer when they realize they are seeing a familiar tale, something from their own life, sometimes even a memory. There is excited screaming and laughing and so much thanks. I get a lot of hugs! Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • watercolor painting on Khadi paper with acrylic pen & collage 20 x 16 x 1" I am an abstract painter, and I work primarily in watercolors with mixed media elements. I’m inspired by the interplay of colors, shapes, and uneven lines, and I love the fluid, unpredictable nature of watercolor paints. I work very intuitively: I always have a starting point - a particular color combination or focal point - but then I just go wherever inspiration leads me. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic and oil pastel on canvas 16 x 20" This piece is part of the Open to Interpretation Collection, which explores the ways in which we handle conflict and communicate (or don’t) with those around us - and the impact that has on our personal emotional landscapes. In a culture where many of us are too busy to actually look inward and be honest with ourselves, it is that much harder to be honest with each other. And whether with those closest to us or strangers - when we don’t communicate, we leave it open to interpretation. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 12 x 12" My paintings refer to the mystery, power and spirituality of the landscape. They speak of hope and optimism, while they also recognize humankind's insignificance in relation to the universe. The work is not about realistic forms but rather my response to what I see —the colors, shapes and atmosphere. My intention is to reflect nature's timeless cycle, the ephemeral sense of life, and the question of what else might be. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photography 16 x 20" Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Nihonga technique; minerals, pigments, color pencil, fools gold, lapis lazuli, graphite, charcoal, silver leaf on watercolor paper 8 x 8" Undercurrents, some connected others collide: Lines of communicating, suspended conversation. Seeking spaces between reminiscence and possibility. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • multiple photographs layered in Photoshop 16.5 x 11" Who am I? Who are you? Usually we see ourselves or others from a single perspective--especially in photography. That is why many celebrities feel they must only be photographed from a certain (most flattering) angle. But Picasso understood that even when we are looking at an object, a person we are really seeing everything we know about that individual. He applied this concept especially when depicting his beloveds and his rejected beloveds. I love the idea of multiple images incorporated into a photo, a medium that theoretically only captures a single moment in time. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • charcoal, graphite, & ink collaged on gallery wrapped canvas 20 x 21 x 1.5" Finding Space boldly displays a figure I have been exploring for some time. Once timid and unsure, she is now settling into her environment, pushing against, and past, boundaries placed around her. While this piece did not begin as a true self-portrait, it grew into a solid representation of my own emergence as an artist. Reinventing myself in this next stage of life has brought me face-to-face with insecurity and self-doubt, but also revealed a strength and determination once forgotten. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Picasso marble on a marble base 14 x 10 x 7" I chose the stone because of its interesting coloring while understanding it would be a challenge to carve. The mixture of colors, combination of elements it was composed of, and the dry brittle quality would make it difficult to control. I kept the form simple because of the complex design, yet I wanted the dynamic of the piece moving through space, inspired by the name of the stone, “Picasso,”: thus, the title Harlequin. I utilized power tools to avoid unwanted breaks. The process was direct carving meaning that I had no preconceived idea or model to refer to. Through both an intuitive process and calculated design solutions. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • graphite, watercolor, charcoal, & white ink 15 x 15 x 1.5" In the last three years, preoccupation with the covid virus made every decision more urgent and uncertain. Isolation and extreme personal loss made the Covid Series necessary. Some testimony of the physical and emotional barriers, as well as the confusion, and strange hope of these days seemed important to commit to paper. Each work in this series shows contemplative aspects of these personally difficult years for me, but sadly many other people may connect with these experiences also. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • silicone, rainwater, & acrylic paints onto an indigo background 60 x 48 x 2" While exhibiting my paintings in Italy in 2018, I traveled by car to Reggio, Calabria, the home of my grandparents. I visited many museums along the way, and discovered that mermaids were prevalent in Italian lore and art. They reminded me of the Celtic selkies, and the Native American myth of Sedna. I instilled the wonder, joy, and hope I absorbed from their stories into She Harbors the Sea.

Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • inked plexi plates, printed on rives bfk paper 23 x 24 x 24" As I approached working away from my studio during the Covid 19 'stay at home' order, I worked small, using material that I had at hand, including family debris monoprints, created by layering inked printing plates with my family's ephemeral & permanent cast offs, a record of the mundane and obsolete. After completing a large series of small ‘art in isolation’ mixed media prints, I went 3d, using double sided family debris monoprints as components for building sculptural forms. Folded paper vessels were stitched together to create abstract sculptures that pushed the limits of paper, ink and thread. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • ware-soluble media, India ink, acrylic paint, & acrylic paint marker 24 x 24 x 2.5" Other Dimensions is in my 'Celestial' series. Outerspace, clouds, floating, weightlessness, ... I feel like I'm looking into other dimensions or other worlds places I want to go and see. Where will it take me? With many layers of complex and pure color receding and coming forward. I especially enjoy beginning with water-soluble mark making media of various line qualities. Using my favorite brush, I move colored India Ink around on the canvas to create lovely grays. I then add acrylic paint as I respond to what is happening on the surface. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil pastel on yupo 7.5 x 7.5" Using collage, I explore memory, perception and the layering of one upon the other. There is a layered history to the collage pieces used as they are remnants taken from another artwork. The nicks, smudges and reductive linework of these pieces are expanded upon, adding to the developing narrative. The chair is my motif of choice. As a ubiquitous presence in our day to day lives, it has rich metaphorical meaning. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on gallery wrapped canvas 20 x 20" I am quite taken by trees in nature. I live in Maine for most of the seasons and am always finding new excitement in paintingmy surroundings. Birch trees are my laborite because they have fascinating patterns in the bark and branches. My career as a textile designer has influenced how I see the patterns. My other strength is color. I am experimenting in values rather than chroma and find it has made my art more exciting. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • limited edition digital photo on fine art paper, signed on front 11 x 9 x 1.5" In Tales of a Consulting Detective, Sherlock Holmes said: “You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear.” I take my camera out. I may choose a subject; I may think “that would make a great picture”; I may visit a new place or one I’ve seen before. We have the technology to immediately capture whatever is in front of us. The challenge is for people to slow down; to question whether there is only one way to look at something; and to search for new meaning in something they may have seen before. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • digital drawing on Wacom tablet using digital brushes: watercolor, charcoal, & pastels 15 x 20 x 1" Moonlit Magnolia represents one of my mental places where I go to do my profound thinking. The unobstructed watercolor background of teal creates this velvety feel that is almost tangible. The magnolia tree with its twisted roots is a metaphor for the thoughts on which the dog is resting (with the dog being a self-portrait) whereas the crescent moon is the obvious source of light that can be translated as hopes and dreams. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
