  • oil on panel 12 x 16" I live near the Hudson River and have walked along it in every season and kind of light. One day I saw this pier from an angle that reminded me of Magritte – so how could I resist it? There were many other things I loved about this image - the contrast of textures in the metal pier, rough stone wall and tall grasses; the glow of the sand uncovered by the tide; and the distant skyline. I used glazes to create the glowing sand, and emphasized the horizontal constructions to contrast with the organic foliage form.

  • soft pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes Touch sanded paper 18.25 x 13.375" My work is inspired by objects and scenes from the natural world. I work mainly in soft pastels, and watercolor. When I'm observing something, I'm not simply noticing the object or the landscape before me, I see the dance of colors in color, the lyricism of line, and the play of shapes through value and space. We are surrounded by sublime beauty in the mundane as much as in the extraordinary, and it's this transitory beauty that I am compelled to capture. Aiming to make my work accessible and easy to understand, I prefer to create representational work.

As Above So Below. Moving energy is an important skill. Feeling in your gut and projecting that feeling out is powerful. Holding up your power to present to the world is engaging. Our ideas are ready to materialize in the world.

  • jpeg from large-format inkjet printer with plaster, pastel, charcoal, and pencil superimposed on the surface 12 x 16" Informed by relics of different historical cultures, my work suggests ideal forms as they exist in nature, the human figure and the man-made world. It imparts a fascination with archeology as it reveals traces of previous life, and offers clues to the distant past. My pieces imply a multi-planar reality, and a duality of time: past and present. This is presented in a structure in which overlapping and interlocking planes emphasize compressed space. Layers of fragmented, repeated images, transparencies of forms, and multifaceted colliding energies all contribute to a sense of time intersecting with space.

  • color pencils on Strathmore Bristol Smooth 400 Series 17 x 13" Mushroom foraging is a popular Czech tradition and it’s one that my family (I am of Czech descent) enjoys. Chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, black trumpets and, of course, morels are our favorites. The basket of morels in my piece was inspired by mushrooms we picked on family land. I started looking at the photos I took that day. My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family, the traditions we share, or nature so I decided the textures of the mushrooms and basket would make a fantastic colored pencil work. The details were daunting and required patience I don’t always have, but the result was worth the effort!

  • watercolor paper handcarved with scalpels 15 x 19 x .1" My bas relief paper sculptures allow me to explore the subtle nuances of light and shadow, as well as the delicate interplay between positive and negative space. Fauna features an enchanting array of florals, fauna, and wild flowers that have a touch of whimsy. Here I use watercolor paper, and scalpels to carve into the paper. I rarely plan in detail what I will sculpt and prefer to start and flow. Each piece is unique and takes multiple hours. I like to offset the rhythmic and repetitive patterns with a little chaos, opting for a dynamic and occasionally irregular composition, as if to convey the petals on paper breaking free from the substrate that binds them.

  • acrylic with oil, beeswax, & gold leaf 20 x 20 x 2" I often surprise myself by making art that comes from remembering and expressing my own internal dialog. Experiencing times and places of intense activity, clutter, even chaos, I observe my thoughts seeking the quiet comfort and ease of greater spaciousness. For me this is the manner in which tension resolves as it unwinds and dissipates into the vastness of our inner landscapes, the places we visit when we close our eyes.

The crash of waves, the salt air and people jumping into the water on a hot day in their often brightly colored swimsuits is an endless source of fascination for me and has inspired a series of paintings of the beach.

  • acrylic painting with high glaze 16 x 20 x 2" Portrait of Jaune Quick-To-See Smith is part of an ongoing collection of portraits of women artists who have impacted the arts. The artwork includes recreation of one of Jaune's Memory Map paintings, as well as the rabbit icon she has used in several works. A true portrait of an artist needs to reflect their soul, which including their work helps to achieve. A retrospective of her work, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map, organized by The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, is traveling nationwide.

  • soft pastel on sanded paper 25 x 18" I love capturing the essence of life with my art. I have a unique approach to colors. I paint with rich and pure pigments, often without mixing. My work depicts the subtle lights, reflections and hidden hues on the subjects. Every artwork I create is inspired from life through an imaginative approach. My preferred mediums is soft pastel. I was attracted to the colorful outfit of model in this painting. Her calmness and the bright colors created an interesting contrast, as if she was mesmorized in thoughts. My goal was to capture the essence of this moment.

  • silicone, rainwater, & acrylic paints onto an indigo background 60 x 48 x 2" While exhibiting my paintings in Italy in 2018, I traveled by car to Reggio, Calabria, the home of my grandparents. I visited many museums along the way, and discovered that mermaids were prevalent in Italian lore and art. They reminded me of the Celtic selkies, and the Native American myth of Sedna. I instilled the wonder, joy, and hope I absorbed from their stories into She Harbors the Sea.

  • acrylic paint, mediums, and varnish 30 x 30 x 2" Remember when we could just play? The idea of endless hours of sunlit fun, without the concern of being caught in the dark, has gone into the dream world of Land of the Midnight Sun. What if we lived in Fairbanks, Alaska? Would it be different? Would we play with abandon after work, as the sun found us hiking, running, and exploring far into the passage of the day? I imagined creatures, large and small, once hidden by shadow, now slithering and sliding, rolling and romping. The sunshine phenomenon was used to bring fantasy and a cornucopia of treasures, as a reminder that out of shadows comes the light of fun and laughter.

  • watercolor on paper 8 x 8" My artwork is inspired by the life I see in things like stains and cracks on sidewalks, La Marchande d'oeufs is based on a crack from a sidewalk in my home city of Providence. Like all of my watercolors, this one is characterized style by minimal lines and childlike shading. My process is not defined by preconceived ideas on my part, but rather one in which I listen to the stains and the cracks that call out to me.

Upland Pasture reflects my love of landscape and my love of oil paint and the infinite and subtle combinations produced by mixing and juxtaposing colors.

I start each work with no real direction or plan and as the paint hits the canvas the story comes to life. Whether that story comes from a life experience or something affecting the world today, each work will become a window into a narrative once completed. My wish for whomever glances upon my art is to temporarily leave the conventional and glance into a gateway of a vibrant story.

  • silver solder & copper over wood 104 x 78 x 8" This sculpture is a data visualization of Anne's workload during the COVID lockdown. Anne is the mother of two young children, and during COVID she took on the roles of schoolteacher and household manager for her family of four who were now in the house every day, all the time. Stay-at-home parenting is a rigorous undertaking in the best of circumstances, and with no in-person school or childcare help, it became an all-consuming grind. In Anne’s sculpture, all work hours are unpaid. Larger silver spheres represent a full hour of unpaid labor and smaller spheres represent a half hour of unpaid labor. The very few empty spaces represent an hour when Anne was not working.

  • oil on canvas 16 x 20 x .75" A figure in hot pinks stares with wide eyes in disbelief. What is she looking at? Is it the viewer? This expression of saturated emotion insights a real, tangible feeling within us, as the viewer. The space, however, is pixelated like a quilt stitched together. Is this scene 2-dimensional, patched together with pieces of fabric? Or has the figure somehow morphed this flat object into a 3-dimensional space to exist within? Is she stuck there? Is she asking you to help her get out?

  • oil on panel 18 x 18 x 1.5" Through my paintings, I’ve become attentive to the splendid drama of my everyday world. How the wind can create a ripple in a pond, a flock of birds descending on a field, or how sunlight can illuminate the side of a building are small miracles that happen all around us. In my latest series of oil paintings called Old Souls, I have paid homage to the trees I’m familiar with as I progress through my daily life and work. I thought of these paintings more as portraits of friends than as landscape paintings. I believe nature is intertwined with our lives and has an awareness of our human activity.   • archival paper, photographs, & adhesive 8 x 9.75 x 1.5" Nature-Tecture #3 joins together architectural forms with plant life – thus the play on words in the title. As the third in this Nature-Tecture series, which searches for harmony between that which is manmade and the natural world, this piece pushes further on than its predecessors (#1 and #2), Here, I felt compelled to place the plants bursting out from behind these manmade forms. For me, they send a message: that they are present, vital, growing. This begs the question: What are we doing to protect plants, animals, oceans – and ourselves? One of two bodies of work currently in production, its focus is documenting and honoring our military spouses. The project was initially conceived to thank spouses who participated in my other project; Disrupted Military Portraits. However, these traditional portraits quickly took on a life of their own and I can see this work continuing into the future. As a military spouse myself, I see this as a way to give back to our unique community through artistic representation. Beginning over a decade ago with art deco and steampunk designs. Evolving now into my own personal style of maximalist abstract expressionist works. I used to be overly concerned about perfection, and fine lines, where now I can embrace an unfinished, rustic background. There is perfection in imperfection.   • machine applique, hand embroidery 34 x 32.5" Magical Unicorn, is a fiber portrait, of a profoundly autistic girl. ASD is a disorder mostly comprised of males. Only 1 in 178 girls are diagnosed with Autism. I discussed with the mother, of the child pictured in this quilt, what she loves, her favorite colors, and composed artwork to represent her. People with profound ASD are infants in aging bodies that exhibit childlike behaviors and activities. While their innocence remains, it is a beautiful and heartbreaking journey to witness.   • acrylic, latex, and graphite on canvas 24 x 24 x 1" Printemps is one of the first pieces I painted in my Abstracted Memories series.. It was painted in the spring of 2022 after being reunited with possessions of mine stored for decades. I had recently moved back to the East Coast from Northern California. The ensuing flood of emotions, memories and the sensations of touching objects and seeing again photographs of family members who had died even before the items were stored away, was overwhelming. Printemps is in honor of my grandmother Mamie, an artist and performer who raised me when I was a child and died when I was 14 years old.   • acrylic on canvas 20 x 20 x 1.5" Bloom is focused in the photosynthesis of planktons and the journey this species go through yearly from the Atlantic to the Arctic. I was very intrigued to find this natural phenomenon and see the similarities to my work style. I intentionally mimicked the density of the reproduction of plankton, which their presence changes the color of the water in which they live, leaving a colorful trail in the ocean. My approach is very intuitive; through the use of washed acrylics aligned around earthy colors, I create space-contained systems driven by shapes, layers, patterns and textures to represent the alge bloom. Isolation and extreme personal loss made the Covid Series necessary. Some testimony of the physical and emotional barriers, as well as the confusion, and strange hope of these days seemed important to commit to paper. Each work in this series shows contemplative aspects of these personally difficult years for me, but sadly many other people may connect with these experiences also. The distinction is clear.” I take my camera out. I may choose a subject; I may think “that would make a great picture”; I may visit a new place or one I’ve seen before. We have the technology to immediately capture whatever is in front of us. The challenge is for people to slow down; to question whether there is only one way to look at something; and to search for new meaning in something they may have seen before. The drawings become a point of departure for my abstract paintings, where I engage with the shapes between form, exposing the residual layers of sensation. Abandoned industrial spaces are of particular interest to me, as the grounds of these former factories are healed by the weeds and shrubs of ruderal growth and the forces of nature, which slowly transform toxic materials back to the earth. Ruderal Growth 1 is part of a series based on the abandoned brick factories of the Hudson Valley area of New York State.   • mixed media on textile; screen-printed & machine-stitched 20 x 20" After five years of persistent statewide drought, rampant wildfires seemed to consume much of the formerly spectacular California landscape. Shortly thereafter the rains came, and formerly barren areas could not absorb the water. Such a paradox… too little water, too much water, in just three months’ time. Climate change is real.   • 35 mm full-frame digital camera, 7-14 wide angle lens 16 x 20 x 1" I like to capture the fast-paced dynamics of New York City street life. What is exciting and energizes me is how spontaneous the process is, and unpredictable people are. Some are completely unaware of being photographed, some may see me and pose and wave, others may be hostile to what they consider an intrusion. On occasion, I may stop and ask someone if they would let me take their photo. I look for places with interesting forms, light, and street geometry for a good background to the people I photograph. What attracts me to photograph someone may be an expression, an action, details, colors or reflections. Sometimes my artwork is quite literal, capturing the light and beauty of a particular moment. Moving away from that moment, the work evolves into a more abstract representation of memory and emotion. ​I've always sought solace in nature, and as a Master Gardener and beekeeper, I've witnessed the delicate balance between ecosystems and the importance of conserving natural resources. I feel compelled to capture the beauty of this interdependence in a meaningful and expressive way, communicating the importance of environmental sustainability.   • mixed media on stretched wall-hung canvas 24 x 14 x 2" In Crossings, I address the notion of a fraught crossing from one place to another. This is a continuation of the work that I began a few years ago with Night Boats. The wall-hung pieces and mixed media sculptures are patched together from a variety of media and found objects, seemingly fragile yet in fact resilient. They represent the resourcefulness and determination needed in order to undertake a perilous voyage into the unknown. Crossings also alludes to more symbolic voyages into the unknown. Physical gaps in the work, that appear to be filled with light or with or with stormy darkness, are spanned by delicate threads and illusions.   • cut & shredded magazine paper 11 x 14" This collage is part of a series about the condition of asylum seekers and the parallel with the religous pilgrims of the past. Both traveled great distances on foot. Both believed in the existence of sanctuary based on faith, the faith that their hope of salvation existed in a physical location. Both are confronted with perils of travel and some never arrive at their hoped for destinations. The parallels reveal that suffering is a part of the human condition historically and in modernity. We like to believe in the advent of modernity that such suffering should be a thing of the past. It's up to all of us to make that change to minimalize the suffering of our fellow beings.   • compressed charcoal & charcoal pencils on extra rough charcoal paper 12 x 9" The lady in this portrait is from an image that was handed to me during a discussion about Edwardian costume. The image was handed to me as I fell in love with the Edwardian hat and jacket, but it was the sitters eyes that compelled me to draw it.   • watercolor & pastel on paper 8.5 x 1.5 x .2" Persephone’s Garden series explores themes of Women’s identities and sacred space held by women. Using the metaphor of the garden before Persephone was abducted by Hades, and historically cared for by women of leisure and/or servitude, and reimagining it as as space for safety, growth, reinvention. Bordering on abstraction and recalling American Impressionism, color worlds are invented and discharged with subtlety and nuance.   • charcoal, graphite, & ink collaged on gallery wrapped canvas 20 x 21 x 1.5" Finding Space boldly displays a figure I have been exploring for some time. Once timid and unsure, she is now settling into her environment, pushing against, and past, boundaries placed around her. While this piece did not begin as a true self-portrait, it grew into a solid representation of my own emergence as an artist. Reinventing myself in this next stage of life has brought me face-to-face with insecurity and self-doubt, but also revealed a strength and determination once forgotten.   • oil on canvas 17.25 x 17.25 x 2" I have always enjoyed studying the many subtleties to be found in nature. Color variations, details in objects, as well as the juxtaposition of objects all interest me greatly. In addition, I find symbolism in art and the various moods created by lighting to be very intriguing. But most of all, it is the challenge of combining these and other elements in the painting process that attracts me to create. Bringing awareness to endangered and threatened species is very important to me. I’m continually striving to bring elements together that invoke a sense of thoughtfulness towards nature and how we affect it.   • mixed media: acrylic, ink, pencil, oil pastel on canvas panel 13 x 16 x 1" Seeking to create deeper relationship with each viewer, no matter their experience or background, my visual language consistently relies upon the use of layers and color theory to invoke dimension and vibration. An abstract conceptual artist, my hope is to sustain conversations about our common needs and desires as a species, including companionship, safety, food, shelter, purpose, joy, understanding, compassion, wonder, belonging, comfort, and love.   • acrylic on canvas 18 x 14 x 2" This scene speaks to me as the objects remind me of my mom who very recently died. She had a way of making things very "hygge" or cozy, for us. The things, or ideas of things-like tea and homemade raisin bread, surround me and feel like a tangible extension of her love. (The flowers are flowers I received when she passed, from my friends and relatives. She was flower fancier too, and I know she would have loved these.) It's been very healing to paint these things. Painting this scene helps me process my grief. It may all sound a bit cliche, but it still resonates. There is a layered history to the collage pieces used as they are remnants taken from another artwork. The nicks, smudges and reductive linework of these pieces are expanded upon, adding to the developing narrative. The chair is my motif of choice. This work celebrates the Hudson and is from a series of prints on rowing from the point of view of an involved participant on the river. The view is from the second seat from the in a four person (quad) scull and is of the rowers taking a break. The piece is from a series of prints on rowing from the point of view of a participant. The on-river iconic scene includes The Walkway Over the Hudson and the F.D.R. Mid-Hudson Bridge in the background.   • Picasso marble on a marble base 14 x 10 x 7" I chose the stone because of its interesting coloring while understanding it would be a challenge to carve. The mixture of colors, combination of elements it was composed of, and the dry brittle quality would make it difficult to control. I kept the form simple because of the complex design, yet I wanted the dynamic of the piece moving through space, inspired by the name of the stone, “Picasso,”: thus, the title Harlequin. I utilized power tools to avoid unwanted breaks. The process was direct carving meaning that I had no preconceived idea or model to refer to.   • wax, pastel, ink 21 x 17" The drawing was done in presence of the model through superimposition of multiple fast poses in one session. The drawing was later completed through emergence of the figure. This drawing is part of a series of drawings which will be used for the production of a short stop motion animation.   • acrylic and oil pastel on canvas 16 x 20" This piece is part of the Open to Interpretation Collection, which explores the ways in which we handle conflict and communicate (or don’t) with those around us - and the impact that has on our personal emotional landscapes.
