Peppers in Motion oil 12 x 14 My subject matter can often reference the human form, gesture, memory, emotion, sensuality or simply capture the energy of a time and place. Some of my work has been fueled by my love of the summer garden. It’s bounty and fruitfulness excites me. My garden in season is lush with vegetation, blossoms, and tons of veggies. I see my still life paintings not as still life but as animated conversations and interactions. When I work from the natural world, I ingest this experience and then synthesize it into my own expression. My use of paint is visceral. I have an appetite for color and enjoy the manipulation of paint that grabs the eye and stirs the unconscious. Morning Light digital collage 14 x 11 In my work, I explore the relationship between memory, emotion, and sense of place through contemporary landscape photography. I capture the scenes of my immediate surroundings and translate them into soft, ethereal, dreamlike vistas. My images often feature trees, distant hills, pink skies, children, tactile atmosphere and the moon. They convey an existence that extends beyond the physical realm and takes the viewer into my own dream world. My work has often been described as incandescent in both definitions of the word: glowing with luminosity and full of emotion and passion. Size of Piece: 9 x 12 x .25'Offering' was inspired by a trip to India where I participated in a service project. I had made a strong, non-verbal connection with this woman which seemed to grow stronger as the weeks passed. On the final day, she invited me into her home and offered a chai tea to share with her, along with one rupee she had kept hidden behind the counter. Her daughter commented thatches was her gift to me. the woman held my hand tightly as we left for the bus-- and followed my eyes through the bus' window as I sat to leave.. both of us in tears. I wanted to capture that moment when the connection felt as if we were just two women- our shared experiences reflected in each others eyes- no matter how far apart our worlds were. The title Gaia came naturally. It turned out to be a scientific hypothesis that the living and nonliving components of earth function as a single system. Acrylic on canvas 20 x 20 in. When I was a young girl, my dad taught me to swim. He'd let me hold onto him as he swam deep underwater....and I loved that feeling of gliding through the water, holding onto him. I never could last as long as he could underwater, and I'd have to let go and swim madly up for air. Those are some of my favorite memories with him...swimming. When he died, I dreamed we were swimming together again, only this time I was the one swimming deep underwater and he was the one swimming madly to the surface...and this time he went far further than the surface.; he went straight on into the sky. The Raven bronze on steel base sculpture 18 x 16 x 12 Lee Hutt studied painting in Belgium as an undergraduate. There, her love of the classical traditions in art was encouraged. Pursuing a course in psychology, Lee received a masters degree in science from Columbia University. Lee continued taking art classes at the New School where she was influenced by the work of Jacob Lawrence and Chaim Gross. This piece was inspired by a raven that lived on a tree outside Lee's home in South Hadley. Sculpted from clay and cast in bronze at the Modern Art Foundry in Long Island City. Inscape #35 acrylic on wood panel 24 x 20 The Forest Inscapes came about accidentally when I was experimenting with dripping acrylic paint on wood panels. I had used dripping extensively in my large Erosion paintings, in which the drips formed veils of colors. Dripped onto a smaller format, the columns of paint looked like trees instead of forming a veil. Thus were born the Forest Inscapes, explorations in color which have evolved to reflect the seasons in the forest around my studio. Pendĕre collage on canvas panel 12 x 12 Pendĕre is built through accumulation — of surface, gesture, memory, and response. Constructed from papers that were hand-painted, stained, textured, and altered by the artist before assembly, the collage embraces imperfection, erosion, and layering as essential elements of its visual language. Each fragment carries its own history while contributing to a larger emotional and rhythmic whole. The composition shifts between order and disruption. Gridded passages and repeated rectangular forms suggest architecture, mapping, or systems of containment, while darker gestural marks interrupt that structure with a sense of movement and instability. Areas of luminous rust, blue, and muted green emerge from an otherwise restrained palette like moments of resonance within silence. The title, Pendĕre, evokes both “to hang” and “to weigh,” suggesting suspension, uncertainty, and reflection. Circular forms appear as anchors or counterweights within the composition, holding tension between gravity and release. The work invites the viewer to move slowly across the surface, discovering relationships between texture, edge, opacity, and mark. Though abstract, the collage is rooted in lived experience and intuitive response. Fragments are layered much like memory itself — partial, altered over time, and continuously recontextualized. Pendĕre does not seek a fixed narrative; instead, it offers a contemplative space where balance and fragmentation coexist, and where meaning emerges through sustained looking. I use a very time-consuming method of working in layers on zinc plates with oil pastels, oil paints, lithographic crayons and hand-cut stencils, often using the ghost image left on a plate or a paint-laden stencil to launch a series. The plate is printed on Arches Cover or Rives BFK on an etching press. This is the first of two prints in this series - the second was created using the ghost image of the first. Homesick photography: Digitally manipulated 21 x 17 Walking in the East Village, I was struck by the graffiti shouting out HOMESICK on the side of the building. The message can be interpreted in many ways...Longing for home, disappointment in seeing the neighborhood change, or on closer inspection... what is lost, as can be read in the partial message "the buildings we lose, are as important...." The strong statement, the blank white of where the building had been, along with the diagonals underscoring HOMESICK and the painterly weatherworn posters along the wall, come together to create an impactful visual image. In portraying individuals at different ages and life stages I engage themes of temporal change, individual vulnerability and human mortality. I reflect moments of inquisitiveness, strength, calm or vulnerability; traces of self-protection and openness; or glimmers of hopefulness, pride and earnestness emerge. As I preserve a moment in the subject’s evolution, I acknowledge the tumultuous forces and inevitable unstoppable sea of change we ride in life. The child’s and his dog’s intent gaze, and the connection, felt in this moment between these friends, are the subjects here. Moose is no longer alive, but the friendship with “his animal brother”, as he called him, is still palpable. The difficult and satisfying challenge in my portraiture is to portray some unarmed truth and in so doing to suggest our complex humanity and shared experience. With the cascading revelations of the Me Too movement, centennial anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, surreal landscape of the Covid pandemic, unrelenting flood of lies and misinformation, and the incessant assault on democracy by our elected politicians, I chose to elevate the work and words of women who have spoken truth to power, pursued freedom and equity, amplified truths at great personal cost and transformed the broader world. Their contributions, stories and lives are often obscured, forgotten or deliberately contradicted. Collectively the series stands as a response to endemic misogyny, racism, sexism and obstruction. Birds, symbolizing keen vision, spirituality, and freedom, are potent symbols of humanity’s hopes and dreams. I integrated specific bird imagery into each work, finding their symbolism often uncannily mirrored the characteristics of each woman. Falcons symbolize endurance survival, victory; wisdom, methodical hard work, rising above challenging situations and success. The series reflects on struggles and inequities of the past, underscores fundamental challenges that still exist, highlights transformative achievements of intelligent, courageous women, commemorates the truth of their words and work, and suggests possible tomorrows. Women are bombarded with images of how we should look, what we should wear, the products we should use. Our face, our hair, our bodies are judged by some unrealistic standard. No wonder so many young girls struggle with body image. At the other end of the spectrum, we older women often feel we are invisible. I do feel that some women are now standing up to this barrage and reminding us that we are each beautiful in our own way. I am trying to do my part in this effort. I started collecting vintage compacts and beauty products and was motivated to create a series of work reminding us that we are so much more than our reflection in the mirror. I am thinking of Love Language and recognizing that cooking is one of the many ways we show our love for family, friends, and ourselves. You Will Outgrow Your Shoes sculpture: found objects 22 x 13 x 3.5 Relationship with Love (Family) Series...this piece was inspired by a song lyric: You will outgrow your shoes, but you will always be my baby. I think most parents think this way. I had the shoes, so as soon as I heard the lyric, I had my intention for this work. I have a daughter so this work was very personal for me and universal, thinking about all families. I used objects from different ages to create the narrative....diaper pin to engagement ring, skate key to car keys. The fan was given to me by a former student, and my daughter had a very similar one. So many stories, so many memories that we share. In Memoriam charcoal, ink, watercolor on paper 25 x 25 framed size: 36 x 36 In Memoriam by Linda McCune is a somber even ghostly image of lilies of remembrance for an unnamed, contributing multitude of women who are not famous in the sense that we know their names or faces, laude their achievements, and record much of their lives. In the 250 years that we are celebrating this year, an estimated 235 million women have been born in this country, based on this number of years 250 have been selected by USA Today and categorized by founders, suffragist and reformers, trailblazers and leaders, and of modern era importance. Indeed, these should be highly regarded an acknowledged. However, my mind wandered to the scant history of my mother, grandmothers, great grandmothers multiplied by thousands of women, each with an importance unrecognized in this celebrated public way. As the movement in my drawing suggests, they amazingly pushed women’s collective history forward daily as an unseen force amidst much gender bias and I wanted to acknowledge their lives as if I had taken this bouquet to each funeral. This large sculpture was planned using preliminary studies with different ideas. The drawing presented for the HerStory250, Study for One Woman’s Work: A Framed Portrait is one of them. In this preliminary the person is an image of a young woman from my family’s collection. In this drawing she is sad and is waiting for people to return from the revolutionary war. She is pictured within an ill-kempt house symbolizing that the caregivers are gone, representing time, and an eroded history, yet she remains dressed in vigil. Unlike the larger sculptural representation, no window guard, screens, or even glass appears in her unprotected state. As in the sculpture, hanging over this window is the colonial symbol for unity, the Betsy Ross Flag shown frayed by long term display representing the many years of wars. During our 250th Anniversary, her portrait is readable, may appeal to a library audience as a reminder of individual grief, and contains threads that strengthened my imagination about the other 64 women in my family who were dealing with the turbulence of the Revolutionary War and Colonial Period. Summer Bouquet oil on canvas 13 x 13 These flowers from my daughter's friends were such a bright and happy memento from a perfect May morning that I wanted to paint them to memorialize a day of graduating and celebrating. The multi-colored bouquet makes me think of a living rainbow, or flower fireworks. I used a combination of brush and palette knife, to create a thick impasto for the central yellow focus flower, and to show the solidity of the jar holding the bouquet.
