punch needle embroidery on weaver's cloth 30 x 24 x 2" Rejecting the insinuations often thrust upon the female form, this work presents a highly rigid and resolutely geometric portrait of a woman, without a stroke of curvature. It's depiction of a fractured facial profile calls out the notion of discomfort from unwanted attention and mis-placed celebration of beauty that women receive simply by just being out in the world. The Artist presents a reaction-driven portrayal of those exchanges, and simultaneously shows strength embodied in female agency. This work re-examines our perceptions on “social appropriateness”. The Artist's mission is to abstract identifiable features and remove individual characteristics to varying degrees, creating broadly familiar subjects that reflect femininity as part of the Whole rather than the Individual. The textures and micro-patterns in the thread-work accent the idea that there is no definable limit from where the fabric that we wear ends and our more personal and emotional inner weavings begin. oil stick on paper 10 x 12" The word Esperanto translates to "one who hopes." It can also be linked to an international auxiliary language developed in 1887. The painting captures the rhythm and spirit of women expressed through dance. Although earth bound, women can often find their head in space, defying gravity, becoming extraterrestrial. oil on canvas 12 x 16" “I’m disappearing with my words,” said the Reading Teacher, dear friend. Vascular Dementia prevents her telling her story. On Tuesdays we laugh, despair, communicate about politics and wars, and draw-except her drawing has “gone, all gone.” Bereft, we watched another loss slide away. Watercolors bring joy; abstract, delicate strokes of color emerge. ‘Irony’ my portrait and painting of leaves, her favorites like years of women’s pages, scattered. It acknowledges her intellect and anger, and reflects that of others. Today, unexpectedly, she demanded, “Get out there, tell them.” Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

acrylic on wood 10 x 8 x 1.5" Inger is my mother. She has recently passed. I think most humans can relate to the importance of their mothers. The first face in one's sights. The dominant female presence shaping their lives. What could be a more vital character in telling the story of your life? Growing up I felt our school was really lacking in history. I only remember hearing about Inuit and feudalism and serfs and such. Therefore, as I have aged I am revisiting history whenever I can. I recently read about many incredible black women facing terrible racism and hardship but still able to be strong and make a difference in this world. Ida B.Wells was a journalist who exposed the brutality of lynching in the South. She also was a leading figure in the women's suffrage movement, having to go up against the prodominently white Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mary Church Terrell was one of the first African-American women to earn a college degree. She was the first African -American on the school board. She founded the National Association of Colored Women and the National Association of college women. And she was a charter member of the NAACP. What a role model in those rough times! Any light shed on these two incredible women is important to our history. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

digital (1 of 10) 8.5 x 11" Creators of many kinds are recognized while incredible artists go unrecognized, have their work undermined, undervalued, and dismissed due to the melanin in their skin. These pieces aim to introduce an important group of rarely recognized artists. These female black fine artists of the 18th & 19th centuries not only sold their work but flourished during decades of our country’s deeply racist and dark underbelly. acrylic paint, ink, graphite, and thread on paper 12 x 12" Art is the language through which I navigate the intricate tapestry of my heritage, stitching together threads of identity and points of view. Reimagined, the Palestinian thob dress and tatreez cross stitch embroidery undergo a metamorphosis into a vibrant painting, capturing the intricate identity and narrative of dispersed refugees, with a particular focus on the experiences of women. It serves as a powerful symbol of diaspora, encapsulating a shared destiny that, at times, may appear ambiguous. Yet, amid this uncertainty, it radiates an unmistakable spirit of conviction and strength, showcasing a resilience that remains impervious to any injustice. This reinterpretation mirrors an enduring commitment to self-determination and an unwavering pursuit of hope for a more promising future, especially for women facing the challenges of displacement. oil, acrylic on canvas 40 x 30 x .5" One of my defining principle is establishing an open dialogue between forms and color in all aspects of my artworks, and to inspire a new way of thinking, as abstract art promotes the ability to express freely in an original way. As a trained classical painter, I chose to expand my artistic view on abstract forms that blend lines and color. I strive to capture the mood of the surrounding world through these modalities and am drawn towards the simple, unpretentious, and quotidian in framing my vision of reality. As a versatile artist, I work with traditional materials such as oil, watercolor, ink, and pencil, creating landscapes and still life artworks that truly capture the beauty in seemingly mundane objects and spaces. The creation of my art is a visceral experience, with my art being the tool with which I can express, envision, and share with others in unique ways the concepts of life that drive humanity most—such as love, truth, and the underlying beauty of the everyday experience. acrylics 29 x 23 x 1.5" I have always enjoyed studying the many subtleties to be found in nature. Color variations, details in objects, as well as the juxtaposition of objects all interest me greatly. In addition, I find symbolism in art and the various moods created by lighting to be very intriguing. But most of all, it is the challenge of combining these and other elements in the painting process that attracts me to create. This image "Spread Your Wings" not only brings to light women striving for independence but at the same time brings awareness to the Burrowing owl that is currently on the endangered species list. Bringing awareness to endangered and threatened species is very important to me. I’m continually striving to bring elements together that invoke a sense of thoughtfulness towards nature and how we affect it. egg-tempera on panel 16 x 12" I am committed to creating work that radiates positive vibes and deep contemplation. My artistic aspiration, rooted in respect for Nature and Human beings, is often expressed in abstract form. I also explore human consciousness concepts in figurative works, such as perception, cultural beliefs, traditions, and lifestyles. I work in series or interdisciplinary collections that form a cohesive narrative. I love experimenting with materials and mixing the media in 2D and 3D works as I adapt to environmentally clean techniques, utilizing non-toxic materials. I believe in the interconnectedness of all things. In my work, I link the qualities of the natural elements with various cultural symbols and draw visual parallels of these correlations, using organic forms and interwoven trajectories. I am exploring the dynamic of movement and light - the light reflected on the surfaces of sculpture, and the inner light that works of art emanate, reflecting the artist’s intention. My process is intuitive and so are my findings. The unknown is what inspires me and keeps me going. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

digital photography, Inkjet archival print 16 x 20 x 1" My photo 'Reminiscing' is based on an encounter with a woman, dressed mostly in black, sitting in front of the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.. She agreed to pose for me and I took a few photos. She said she had been a student there, many years ago and the school enabled her to become a successful graphic designer. The other two photos were taken at a Long Island Peaceful Protest event in 2020, following the death of George Floyd.. 'Speaking Out' is a woman talking about justice and women's rights. 'Women's Rights' showed a woman with a baby on her back, speaking out about the need for equality in healthcare for women. She stated black women could not get the same quality care as whites, in pregnancy and childbirth. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

acrylic on cradled wood panel 18 x 24" I recently drew an abandoned textile factory where generations of women, wives and daughters of men who worked the mines and the mills, worked long hours at the looms and held their families together. Their strength and fortitude supported the growing industrial power of the United States. The memories of these long-forgotten women reverberate through the dilapidated equipment, and the traces of their lives intertwines with the weeds that now reclaim the space. The drawing of the factory marks the history; the painting indexes the emotions of the women who worked there and the humming of the now-silent looms. hand cut collage on paper, handcolored 17 x 14 x .1" Women’s Rights issues have been top of mind for many of us. Along with an actual plague, the overturning of Roe V Wade and continuous misogyny has afflicted our nation and preoccupied my art practice. I decided to express my frustration and rage concerning our country's division and lack of empathy through collage. Using vintage imagery with contemporary themes in red, white, blue and black, and hand coloring with ink, colored pencil and acrylic paint, a political collage series was born. I hope to draw attention to the unfortunate retrogression of female rights in America. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

acrylic on stretched canvas 26 x 24 x 1.5" I paint abstract scenes of women, drawing on evocative color palettes to explore themes of identity, beauty, and power. Each painting is a self-portrait of my own emotional experience, emerging from roles as a mother, daughter, friend, and psychotherapist. In this piece, the woman appears to be experiencing a profoundly personal moment as she melds into an organic, ethereal landscape, enveloped in vibrant hues of pink, yellow, and orange. mixed media acrylic on collage of recycled materials on canvas 24 x 24 x 2" I believe that in a world overwhelmed by waste, it’s important to give discarded objects a new purpose and highlight their hidden potential. Each portrait I create tells a unique story and represents the indescribable complexity of the female experience. Because they are painted in acrylic on a textured collage the structure of the background shines through the painted image, marking the female bodies with roughness and imperfection in the manner of passing life that is imprinted in the flesh. These portraits are a testament to the strength, resilience and beauty that women possess, breaking through societal norms and stereotypes. wax pastel on paper 24 x 18 x 1.5" An exploration of seeing things from different perspectives. We're familiar with the expression "realize my dreams", but what if instead we danced with our dreams? photograph of a transparent collage on a light box 11 x 14" I fold the paper in half, pick up my scissors, and begin to cut. I move my scissors to shape women of various shapes and sizes. I arrange and rearrange and look for backgrounds, and then click-click, I have a photo. Next I work on variations, exploring where the graphic wants to go, revealing hidden layers. Colorful women in abstract shapes and light illustrate women’s inner strength and balance. Every time I pick up my scissors and begin anew I am excited to see who emerges. oil on canvas 20 x 16 x 0.7" I've spent my whole life painting to express who I am. My art reflects life's ups and downs, capturing moments of struggle, enlightenment, and search for peace from a woman's viewpoint. Drawing inspiration from my own journey, tackling emotions like solitude and the quest for purpose, I craft subjects that resonate with universal themes. Through my paintings, I unfold my narrative to the world, employing the canvas as my chosen medium. To keep things fresh, I constantly play with a range of colors and shapes, allowing me to dive into my creative depths while staying true to my distinctive style. monoprint with watercolor 18 x 24" Loie Fuller was a pioneer modern dancer, or “free dance,” as it was called in early days. She was born Marie Louise Fuller in 1862 in my home state of Illinois and renamed herself “Loie” at age 16. She was filmed in 1902, perhaps the first film of a dancer. I imagined her perhaps in a mirror, or doing a duet with herself, in this monoprint. This print, on Hannemuhle paper, was created from a plexiglass plate with a dremel, inked as an intaglio print and subsequently hand watercolored. It is an homage to Ms. Fuller, her history, the joy of dance and the dancing days of my youth- Jill Cliffer-Baratta Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
