I arrange and rearrange and look for backgrounds, and then click-click, I have a photo. Next I work on variations, exploring where the graphic wants to go, revealing hidden layers. Colorful women in abstract shapes and light illustrate women’s inner strength and balance. Every time I pick up my scissors and begin anew I am excited to see who emerges. collage with hand-cut found paper, rice paper, historical elementals, NY Times 13 x 10" Geisha in Murasaki Kimono (Tokyo, 1908) Genji, in his poem, names the "murasaki" or purple gromwell, because its color resembles the colour of the wisteria (in Japanese, fuji) thereby obliquely referring to Fujitsubo, "the Lady of the Wisteria Court," a womyn he is violently in love with for the first part of the novel (11th century).   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.  

drawing on paper 14 x 11" Foremothers: This series of drawings depicts prehistoric clay figurines dating from some 25,000 years ago. Many historians presume these tiny statuettes are fertility goddesses and think they may have been worn as amulets for protection in childbirth. Women’s images like these appear universally across cultures, with wide variations in local styles. The figures shown here are from Europe and the ancient near east. My work depicts the subtle lights, reflections and hidden hues on the subjects. Every artwork I create is inspired from life through an imaginative approach. I enjoy meeting interesting new friends, espacially likeminded woman who are also craetive in their own ways. With our environment in a crisis, I find my work inspired by how to convey the message to think about our natural elements and the beauty around us in its abstract and organic way. Each of my paintings is a dialogue between what is happening to our planet and myself. Each painting is a self-portrait of my own emotional experience, emerging from roles as a mother, daughter, friend, and psychotherapist. She has a difficult life but she tries to keep her self-esteem. First I named this painting "Trans-Siberian Merilyn", but my hero does not have such a bright life, so I changed the title. digital photography, Inkjet archival print 16 x 20 x 1" My photo 'Reminiscing' is based on an encounter with a woman, dressed mostly in black, sitting in front of the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.. She agreed to pose for me and I took a few photos. She said she had been a student there, many years ago and the school enabled her to become a successful graphic designer. The other two photos were taken at a Long Island Peaceful Protest event in 2020, following the death of George Floyd.. 'Speaking Out' is a woman talking about justice and women's rights. 'Women's Rights' showed a woman with a baby on her back, speaking out about the need for equality in healthcare for women. As a trained classical painter, I chose to expand my artistic view on abstract forms that blend lines and color. I strive to capture the mood of the surrounding world through these modalities and am drawn towards the simple, unpretentious, and quotidian in framing my vision of reality. As a versatile artist, I work with traditional materials such as oil, watercolor, ink, and pencil, creating landscapes and still life artworks that truly capture the beauty in seemingly mundane objects and spaces. These female black fine artists of the 18th & 19th centuries not only sold their work but flourished during decades of our country’s deeply racist and dark underbelly. acrylic on wood 10 x 8 x 1.5" Inger is my mother. She has recently passed. I think most humans can relate to the importance of their mothers. The first face in one's sights. The dominant female presence shaping their lives. What could be a more vital character in telling the story of your life? Growing up I felt our school was really lacking in history. I only remember hearing about Inuit and feudalism and serfs and such. Therefore, as I have aged I am revisiting history whenever I can. I recently read about many incredible black women facing terrible racism and hardship but still able to be strong and make a difference in this world. Ida B.Wells was a journalist who exposed the brutality of lynching in the South. She also was a leading figure in the women's suffrage movement, having to go up against the prodominently white Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mary Church Terrell was one of the first African-American women to earn a college degree. She was the first African -American on the school board. She founded the National Association of Colored Women and the National Association of college women. And she was a charter member of the NAACP. What a role model in those rough times! The painting captures the rhythm and spirit of women expressed through dance. punch needle embroidery on weaver's cloth 30 x 24 x 2" Rejecting the insinuations often thrust upon the female form, this work presents a highly rigid and resolutely geometric portrait of a woman, without a stroke of curvature. It's depiction of a fractured facial profile calls out the notion of discomfort from unwanted attention and mis-placed celebration of beauty that women receive simply by just being out in the world. The Artist presents a reaction-driven portrayal of those exchanges, and simultaneously shows strength embodied in female agency. This work re-examines our perceptions on “social appropriateness”. The Artist's mission is to abstract identifiable features and remove individual characteristics to varying degrees, creating broadly familiar subjects that reflect femininity as part of the Whole rather than the Individual. watercolor 24 x 28" Painting , for me, is an opportunity to retreat into my imagination and paint not just the subject, but my feelings about my "story. I call this imaginative process “painting with my mind’s eye”; as I work to cultivate artwork that tells the narrative of who I have painted. I dribble, splatter and toil with water-media to create an image that shares the spirit of my subject and her experiences. In recent years, I have been working with ideas inspired by the life of women’s experiences from past eras.
