acrylic on thin birch board 16 x 12 x .125"I wanted to branch out into less traditional portraiture, and conceived of the idea of modern iconography—portraying everyday people as saints and mythological characters. I loved the reference model's beautiful silhouette and sidelong look, and decided to add a halo and name her Saint Side-Eye to convey a sense of mystery and distinction.

collage 9 x 12" Different media enable a variety of ideas to form and emerge and small dimensions encourage experimentation. What one produces in monotype on a press contrasts with what one creates using encaustic and can look unlike anything done with paper collage. All three media are direct, spontaneous and playful. Here are three skyscapes or, as I prefer, three fantasies about looking out and up. A good way to begin the new year. collage 6 x 8" The theme "Frozen Dreams and Abstract Realities: Winter’s Dual Nature" lends itself to a variety of interpretations in different media. My submission explores oil on paper, encaustic and collage to picture the changes in nature that winter brings when hiking in the mountains or walking along the seashore or just looking out of the window. From the slopes of the Jura in France to the shores of Montauk, Long Island, and the view from our window in Dorset, Vermont, snow is the constant winter companion. oil on paper 30 x 22" Working in oil-based inks with handmade paper plates and an etching press, I created this monotype by passing the print through several iterations until I achieved the final image. When choosing a title, I read a lot of poetry while looking at the print. The selection, Music of the Spheres, is the title of a poem by Robert Morgan.

oil on paper 22 x 30" This painting reflects my long love of mountains. I lived for years in Geneva, skied and hiked in the Alps and the Jura. From the Green Mountains and White Mountains of New England to the Tetons of Wyoming, I retain vivid memories. In my imagination these impressions are transformed, reworked with many techniques, and imbued with emotions. Mountains represent many sentiments.

oil on Belgian linen 12 x 12" The apprehension of movement on abstract shapes figure predominantly in my paintings. Each individual shape is a particular motion enacted on a still substrate, in this case Belgian Linen. The stop action union of these two opposing elements, movement on stillness and the idea of their simultaneous interaction is my longtime pursuit. I wish to offer a near view of particular shapes, conversing together. I propose these conversations in a sculptural manner adding tensions of heightened light, texture and color. My pursuit concurs with my idea that motion itself as a part of life is a mysterious occurrence.

oil & mixed media 36 x 84 x 1.5"Tribute to NAWA founders and all subsequent members, names of current SC chapter along base. Divided into 3 centuries, 19, 20,21. Four founders shown handing caged birds, aka female artists, to original, Grace FitzRandolph, who frees them into next centuries. Depicts expected societal rules and fashion. Ironic use of vacuum cleaner bags for samplers, with names stitched, child like. Corsets, keys, cages, chatelain, approved art subjects. 20 century, my artistic journey with doubts, failures, dark places to hide but within glorious symphony of nature. 21 century, my confident, peaceful place with space to think and work. Carolina Wren as guardian. Birds and flight paths connect the centuries.

oil on canvas 36 x 24 x 1.75" My personal story continues to drive my artistic life. A citizen of two countries, I am in debt to both, and battle against feelings of disloyalty, so, always a parent, I try to give attention to both, at the same time coping with the frequent crises of family life. Sometimes, I am Alice down the hole, baffled, surrounded by crazy creatures, questioning my sanity and the reality of things, then I focus on the beauty and structure of nature, and wisdom returns. This is the essence of my work.

mixed media on Arches paper 30 x 22" Every Tuesday I spend time with a friend with Vascular Dementia. Just before her diagnosis she asked me to teach her to draw. Immediately, in spite of no experience at all, it was clear that she had outstanding talent. Her illness has robbed her of this gift and the opportunity of certain NAWA membership. How she would have loved this sisterhood and its sharing of ideas, joy, respect, and strength. This piece shows her feeling of disappearing, but mostly it is about our shared sorrow.

Ink, pastel, and color pencil on paper 40 x 22.5 in. Ever since antiquity, astronomers have studied the 13 phases of Venus, from her rise as the morning star, to her descent into invisibility, and her re-emergence in the evening sky. These phases occur over a 19-month cycle, marking both a physical and a spiritual passage. I expressed each phase in a different work. The journey begins with Inception, passing through Gestation, Birth, Emergence towards Fullness and Self-Discovery. Then Immersion and Transmutation are followed by Rebirth, Remembering, Wholeness, Completion. My inspiration was a found ledger of observations of the 1874 Transit of Venus, a phenomenon occurring every 243 years when the planet moves across the face of the sun. mixed media on stretched wall-hung canvas 24 x 14 x 2" In Crossings, I address the notion of a fraught crossing from one place to another. This is a continuation of the work that I began a few years ago with Night Boats. The wall-hung pieces and mixed media sculptures are patched together from a variety of media and found objects, seemingly fragile yet in fact resilient. They represent the resourcefulness and determination needed in order to undertake a perilous voyage into the unknown. Crossings also alludes to more symbolic voyages into the unknown. Physical gaps in the work, that appear to be filled with light or with or with stormy darkness, are spanned by delicate threads and illusions. Sculpture 7.5 x 3.2 x 14 in. Mano de la Vida - The Translucent Orange Alabaster stone had split at an angle, the bottom half of the stone resembled a hand and forearm. The beautiful texture, color variations and striations in the stone blended perfectly with the concept of a divine giver. The female figure held in the hand represents life, rebirth, and the transformation of oneself.
