watercolor on Yupo 20 x 19" Recently I have been working on Yupo paper with my watercolors. This piece is a still life from my flower garden. I like the fluid effects that happen on the yupo substrate and the challenge to control the direction of the painting. It can be abstract in feel but still very realistic to the viewer.

Painting Summer Lovers 15 x 19 x 1 in. “Creating art is a vehicle through which I can more easily communicate my impressions of the world. I enjoy using line, color and a dynamic design to tell my visual story. As I begin the creative process, the medium of pastel provides an immediate and colorful way to make painterly decisions and choices.” Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

digital painting 14 x 28 x 1" I have always loved creating landscapes, and whether I am painting with actual paint or with my computer, I quickly and happily become lost in the process. Also, always evident with either method is my intense love of color. Catskill Morning is born of my memories of family journeys through the beautiful Catskill mountains when I was a child.

watercolor & gouache on polypropylene 27.25 x 33.25 x 1.5" The Italian word “capriccio” has various definitions: playful; whimsical; fanciful notion; an instrumental free form composition, usually lively in tempo and brilliant in style; characterized by unpredictable, sudden turns and changes were my muses for this painting. If ever a word described the Italian spirit, this is that word. It is the word that inspired the playground of the Roman emperors – Capri. “Capriccio” expresses all the definitions simultaneously. Using only the elements of art in a non-narrative composition afforded me the opportunity to take a capriciously joyful approach in my artistic interpretation of the word and the joyful Italian spirit and overall approach to life.

yarn, excavated doll shards, black porcelain paint 30 x 28" On this hand knitted tapestry representing childhood and innocence is the tragic theme of brokenness and loss. Gun violence is the leading cause of childhood death. For every hundred thousand children, five are lost to gun violence as recorded by the CDC. As a therapist, I’ve seen their pain, fear, and the silent screams for help. In my art I seek to make their voices heard. I created Our Lost Children from raw wool, excavated doll shards, paint and tears, hoping all who see it will act to keep our children safe and break the cycle of childhood deaths by gun violence.

Acrylic 20 x 20" In my painting, Birches and Lace, I explore memories and perceptions of the natural world through the colorful, gestural use of shapes and lines to mimic organic forms found in nature. The negative spaces between the trees take on just as much importance as the positive subject matter. While not true to life, the palette creates a conversation between cool and warm tones.

Acrylic 40 X 30" Burnt Orange Woods was created as part of a series that I titled Perspective. The drawing elements and color fields in the negative spaces between the trees are used to create depth. The nontraditional colors create a dialogue when placed next to each other. I relied on my own experiences of hiking several trails throughout the United States to convey a universal sense of place.

acrylic 30 x 40" Karlene explores memories and perceptions of the natural world through her colorful, gestural paintings. She uses shapes and lines to mimic organic forms found in nature, playing with positive and negative space and layers of paint to build up a sense of atmosphere on a flat plane. Her work is also fueled by bursts of color. While not true to life, her palette creates a conversation between cool and warm tones and serves to energize her compositions.

mixed media on canvas 36 x 46" Karlene explores memories and perceptions of the natural world through her colorful, gestural paintings. “McConnell uses her experiences of the real world to recreate the joy, excitement and even the magic of a walk in the woods. When she is “in the zone” she is exploring the interaction of vibrant colors or making simple marks that mimic nature and are pleasing to look at. Harking back to Matisse, we hear a similar theme: Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the diverse elements at the painter’s command to express his feelings. This is about as close to a manifesto that we can imagine for the wild beasts (Les Fauves never wrote one) and it applies to McConnell as well. This kind of painter makes no effort to desaturate or blend but allows pure color, even discordant ones, to ring out at a maximum intensity.” - Dr. James Murphy - original Art Director Atlantic Center for the Arts & former Art Professor Florida State University.

finger painted oil on canvas 24 x 30 x 1.78" My art explores the relationship between perception and imagination. Created as an antidote to stress, I use visually calming forms and optical illusions to imbue a sense of wonder. I work in various media. In my upcycled sculptures, I transform mass-produced consumer goods into organic forms that float at the ceiling, cascade down the wall, and glow in the dark. I also communicate through high-tone and gilded paintings, luminous ink paintings, and fractal-like photographic designs in limited editions of five that are dye-sublimated onto aluminum panels. I often hide tiny positive messages in my art that range from large-scale to miniature, many of which play with light. Through my work, I create opportunities that invite tuning into the present moment and letting everything else disappear as curiosity takes over because everyone benefits when they experience a dopamine release. This feel-good chemical has the power to shift perspective and positively impact the world. I play with perception and imagination through the Fauvist lens in my submitted work. Native color is replaced with tonal cousins, sharing a version of reality that exists in my mind. I love the grandeur of the mountainscape and allow my interpretation to guide my work. This painting has the word “LOVE” snuggled within it as a talisman for what we all want to find within our hearts when we experience the natural world, especially in Winter. May my frozen dreams and abstract realities call Winter’s dual nature to mind and ignite your curiosity! acrylic painting 40 x 30 x 1.5" My freehand, hard-edged abstract, sculptural form floats within a harmonized color field. I created my color pair with techniques used by figurative painters to give atmospheric perspective to landscapes and depth to objects in space. Can you sense the depth? Sentinel is a regal abstraction, placidly on guard. My signature tiny golden heart rests on the underside of the canvas, a talisman of joy, hope, and love. I varnished her with a matte finish. A minimal white wooden float frame and a small portal to view the golden heart can be added to this painting.
