  • acrylic paint, ink, graphite, and thread on paper 16 x 16" Art is the language through which I navigate the intricate tapestry of my heritage, stitching together threads of identity and points of view. Reimagined, the Palestinian thob dress and tatreez cross stitch embroidery undergo a metamorphosis into a vibrant painting, capturing the intricate identity and narrative of dispersed refugees, with a particular focus on the experiences of women. It serves as a powerful symbol of diaspora, encapsulating a shared destiny that, at times, may appear ambiguous. Yet, amid this uncertainty, it radiates an unmistakable spirit of conviction and strength, showcasing a resilience that remains impervious to any injustice. This reinterpretation mirrors an enduring commitment to self-determination and an unwavering pursuit of hope for a more promising future, especially for women facing the challenges of displacement.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

The "Woven View" sculptural dress, meticulously crafted and stitched from a canvas painting, echoes the resilience and narratives of Palestinian culture. Inspired by the traditional embroidered Palestinian Thobe, it links Palestinians to their homeland and reflects cultural self-expression and identity. By cutting and stitching canvas, the dress creates a borderless composition, symbolizing the ongoing struggle and resilience of a society forced into scattered exile. It represents the unwavering determination to reclaim autonomy and pursue a brighter future, embodying the spirit of defying injustices to preserve identity and hope.

  • Photograph Mounted on Cradled Wood Board Artemis 26 x 16 Lush gardens, majestic landscapes, and serene seascapes have always been a source of inspiration in my image making. Combining traditional photography methods with contemporary techniques enables me to record and reinterpret the world around me. I work on an intuitive level without a predetermined image in mind, and consider an image successful when it is transformed beyond the reality of the camera into a personal connection with nature. • acrylic 21 x 17 x 1" I am currently working on a series of Strong Women, inspired by artists, writers, and other women of prominence in their fields who have demonstrated a passion for their work and a resilience to survive, sometimes against all odds.  By delving into the past as well as the present, through paintings and photography, I have been inspired to recreate those images in my own expressionistic style. It is an ongoing challenge and hope that the finished portrait will give a sense of immediacy and permanence to the subject, that the strength and depth will shine through.

  • acrylic 21 x 17 x 1" My Strong Women series focuses on subjects of historical and cultural, artistic or literary significance to our lives as women. These are expressionistic portraits that reach for an immediacy that resonates with the viewer and not be considered an attempt at a naturalistic rendition. As a writer/artist/photographer, I have also spent time working with the power of black and white (especially in photography) to convey the intended feeling. Translating this into the medium of painting is challenging ut a great satisfaction.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • acrylic 21 x 17 x 1" I have always been interested in the stories of women who create. Whatever the medium is--poetry, fiction, non-fiction, painting, sculpture, music--wherever the muse takes them. My own artistic career has been varied, with writing fiction, non-fiction (journalism) and painting taking precedence. A passion for photography has led to an interest in expressionistic portraiture, using photographs of artists, past and present, as a springboard for my own painting. Some believe that a photograph lies as it only captures a moment but what can be read in that moment has helped me in my own search for the truth behind the image., which has led to my Strong Women series.

  • acrylic on canvas 20 x 16" I have been working on a Strong Women series, searching for images of women, writers and artists from the past, who have inspired me through their talent, resilience against various forms of cultural adversity and their singular vision. I find there is an intuitive vitality in approaching each subject--a kind of creative sisterhood if you will, that connects us from the first brushstroke to the finish.

My work is inspired by the natural environment and made to celebrate, memorialize, and preserve living entities during the ongoing climate crisis. Coral Group 3 is one of a series of work inspired by many visits to the Mesoamerican Reef off the coast of Belize. The incredible variations of colors, textures, and designs of the corals are translated into a wet felted 3-D textile sculpture. It invites the viewer into the flow, patterns, and textures that evoke a more emotional connection to the environment and its precarious balance due to climate change impact.

  • Clay 8 x 35 x 5" Clay as a medium allows a wealth of options as to color, texture, and form. In my sculpting journey I originally focused on figurative work, then became captivated by the natural forms of corals and their fragility because of climate change, and now occasionally morph a combination of these two forms. Exploring form and texture, and creating movement and strength, has led to a wide range of outcomes. As a fine art photographer my goal is to engage the viewer. It is not my purpose to document an event as a photojournalist would be doing, but to create a work of art that stirs an emotion. I photographed these penguins on the Falkland Islands off South America and waited until the penguins started interacting with one another before I attempting to photograph them. By waiting until the right moment, the viewer can now feel the same excitement as I experienced, when I saw these two penguins greeting each other… ready to kiss!

Queen Anne’s Staircase, in my eye, is a perfect example of Depth Perception.  As we climbed the staircase in this building, it was hard to see to the top and imagine how high it must be. The architect created a masterpiece of design, with just the right amount of height and width while embellishing it with a floral motif. As a photographer I tried to capture this beauty using a wide angle lens and removed all color tones to replicate the cold starkness that I felt as we ascended.

Recently I had the privilege of visiting magnificent Wadi Rum desert in Jordan.  This magical land features sweeping red sand dunes and towering sandstone and huge granite rock formations. In this World Heritage site, I was able to experience humanity’s earliest beginnings. By placing my camera as close to the earth as possible and using a small lens aperture, my depth of field was expansive.  I was able to accomplish my goal: to bring the present and future together -  to emphasize the dunes while still showing the vistas in the distance.

This owl is part of a series of Sentinel Figures. I mean them to be protective and fierce. I started them during the pandemic when I just wanted to protect my family and friends. They are all made with a combination of forms thrown on a potters wheel and forms that are modeled. I read about and studied images of owls for inspiration. Owls are awesome.

For most of my career, I had worked with female models, exploring issues of identity, sexuality and personal power. During and after the pandemic, that didn't seem relevant. I also wanted to throw pottery again as I had at the beginning of my career. I found the process consoling, and I wanted to offer consolation to others. I felt protective of my friends and my family. I began a series of sculptures that combine thrown and modeled forms. They are meant to be protective figures from the realm of myth and imagination. This one, Buddy Buddha, is my own beloved dog, who was such a cheerful and affectionate companion during that terrible time.

  • Conversation Glazed Stoneware with overglaze Size of Piece: 14 x 12 Gesture is everything in figurative sculpture. The smallest details are important. The curve of a hip, the position of one finger can alter meaning. I find sculpture fascinating in the way that it exists in real space with us, and how that proximity triggers connection with our minds, our eyes, our memories, and our feelings. • glazed stoneware 17 x 6 x 6" After the pandemic I was feeling protective of myself and my friends and family. I had been doing nudes for a long time, but it didn't feel appropriate anymore. • Archival pigment print 36 x 24 in. w/ frame 37 x 25 in. Bety has been cleaning homes since she was 11, and she also gets up early every weekday to volunteer at morning mass at her church. She also does most of the domestic labor in her own home. Bety’s paid labor hours, spent cleaning houses, are represented by heavy, earth-colored forms cast from various types of potscrubbers. Her unpaid work hours, many of which are spent volunteering within her church community, are represented by lighter disks with holes reminiscent of tracery. Hours not spent working are spaces on the chain. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • silver solder & copper over wood 104 x 78 x 8" This sculpture is a data visualization of Anne's workload during the COVID lockdown. Anne is the mother of two young children, and during COVID she took on the roles of schoolteacher and household manager for her family of four who were now in the house every day, all the time. Stay-at-home parenting is a rigorous undertaking in the best of circumstances, and with no in-person school or childcare help, it became an all-consuming grind. In Anne’s sculpture, all work hours are unpaid. Larger silver spheres represent a full hour of unpaid labor and smaller spheres represent a half hour of unpaid labor. The very few empty spaces represent an hour when Anne was not working.

  • Mixed Media Painting 36 x 24 x 1 in. Explanation for Secrets among Blossoms- Life is a canvas splashed with unexpected twists. • Secrets Among Blossoms Acrylics and Watercolor on Aqua-board Size of Piece: 36 x 24 x 1.5 Secrets among Blossoms- Life is a canvas splashed with unexpected twists. Those who master the art of embracing uncertainty and forging ahead are the ones who truly survive. Each heart is a wondrous chest, overflowing with secrets. The outward beauty may enchant the eye, yet beneath the surface lie veiled wounds and hidden mysteries. Frozen Blooms- is about the quiet toll of life’s hardships. The woman holds a bouquet of flowers—symbols of beauty and hope—but she doesn’t seem to feel their warmth. Her gaze is distant, her expression unreadable, as if the struggles she’s faced have left her numb. The deep purple tones wrap around her like a lingering sadness, while the bright yellow background reminds us that life’s warmth still exists, even when it feels out of reach. This painting speaks to those moments when we carry beauty in our hands but feel unable to embrace it, when the weight of our past makes it hard to see the light ahead. • acrylic 18 x 24 x 1.75" Convergence is the culmination of many hours of blending directly on the canvas. My process begins by selecting a color scheme and limiting myself to using only those colors plus neutrals. I work intuitively, applying paint then stepping back to analyze until I see no further changes to be made. The complementary colors in Convergence seemed to flow in a pattern which reminded me of rivers merging together in a confluence.

  • acrylic & gel medium on canvas 20 x 20 x 1.5" The initial inspiration for this painting came from some of the beautiful images seen from the James Webb Space Telescope. My goal was to mix texture and colors to highlight the counterplay of the darkness of space and the amazing light and colors captured in those images. The texture creates a sense of motion with the focal point representing the revelation of a distant source of light. In this "portrait," I'm trying to capture the rebellious aspects of a woman's personality, mainly through the colorful and nonconformist way she adorns herself as well as her living space. I'm inspired by the simplicity and directness of Folk and Outsider art. And when I was working on this piece, the words to the David Bowie song, "Rebel, Rebel," were going through my mind.
