I have developed a group of totally imaginary magically realistic oil paintings that I call my “Water Circus” series. The joy of taking a man-made or natural object and creating something new and fresh is very appealing to me. I allow myself a chance to play, to feel the rhythm of their form and reveal the hidden image in a new and unique way. I like to leave all possibilities open, to start unattached to the outcome, with everything totally permitted, thus enabling me to fully enjoy the process of discovery.
I make my own paint by hand mixing dry pigments with burnt plate oil (a refined linseed oil used as the binder for etching ink). Because of this, I use thin glazes of the primary colors, add Liquin to hasten the drying, and build multiple layers of opaque values of each color in the egg tempera technique manner. The finished color relationships are always a surprise.
