  • Get Out Of My Way
acrylic & M/M on stretched gallery wrapped canvas
    Size: 30 x 24
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for "GET OUT OF MY WAY" stems from many moments of frustration and determination. It channels raw emotions into a purposeful progression and assertive motion. It is a visual representation of breaking barriers or asserting oneself amidst challenges and conveying a sense of urgency. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • watercolor 35 x 28 x 1" The inspiration is the plethora of late summer-plantings in the St-Michel-de-Cuxa Cloister at The Cloisters Museum in northern Manhattan. My intent was to convey the contrast between the permanence of the 12th-century architectural elements and the fragile, transient essence of the blooms.

    Oil on canvas painting
Size: 12 x 24 This is part of a series dedicated to children. I am fascinated by the directness, boldness, spontaneity and curiosity in their young lives. Often as adults we lose these qualities. That is why childhood is so precious. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • watercolor 11 x 10 x 2" My watercolor paintings and graphite drawings celebrate the beauty I find in the world. I work in the tradition of the great British watercolorists, layering layer upon layer with pigment and or graphite to build depth and dimension in each composition. • linocut 20 x 16 x 1" My prints reflect my lifetime fascination with the eternal truths and beauty found in the natural world. I find these in the grace and elegance of living forms and the majesty of scenic landscapes. I channel them into a personal visual statement. Each print is the result of an idea, a narrative that forms in my mind, which I execute as a design. Then there is the challenge of cutting the image into the plate and printing the edition. Cutting each plate provides a new learning experience.

  • End of the Day Mixed Media Size of Piece: 23.25 x 17.5 "I enjoy using layers and textures in my work and usually incorporate more than just one medium. End of the Day was inspired by a photograph that I took of my grandchildren leaving the beach." Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • Feline Feminist Mixed Media Collage and Acrylic on Sintra panel Size of Piece: 24 x 18 Creating artwork can be a powerful and universal vehicle for human connection. For me, the challenge is to touch the timeless themes iterated in visual art, literature, drama and music throughout recorded history, while staying relevant and responsive to one’s own cultural place in the timeline. Since childhood to the present day, I have been a painter and visual artist. My images are primarily painted directly from life, with the subject typically casting a gaze back at the viewer. My paintings respond to themes “humanity”- my fellow women, forced migration, social justice, civil rights, natural and man-made calamities, as well as the respite of nature’s continuum. My process comes from my desire to bypass self-conscious inhibitions in the pursuit of self-expression. In 1990, I felt artistically "reborn" when I started painting with my non-dominant left hand and discovered renewed creative freedom. This, as well as using oversized brushes, gives me speed and fluidity, resulting in either as a fully representational finished painting, or the base on which to build a mixed media collage. Utilizing physical collage materials such as torn maps, shards of color, images from printed media, and my own repurposed drawing fragments as my palette, the works become emblematic statements of the over-stimulation and media bombardment of contemporary society, in concert with the directly observed presentation of a human subject. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • collage with acrylic and paper 18 x 18" This collage, which presents a destroyed landscape, comes from my emotional response to the devastation of human displacement. Working loosely with abandon, layering paint and papers on a panel, the intuitive process itself supports the creation of an abstracted evocation of the chaotic aftermath of a cataclysmic event.

  • photography 24 x 30 x 1"
My intent is to create a narrative through this photograph of the needy and poverty stricken children of our (3rd) world. Part of my "International Children Series", my photo captures an authentic moment in 2022 of two sisters in front of their living quarters in their Laotian village. There is an irony to their donated GAP clothing and Nike sandals, dirty and worn, in the materialistic standards and values of life in America. Looking further into this photograph, one can see a typical home in Laos, bringing to reality the life of these young girls. Most importantly, their natural expressions add emotional overtones to this piece. as they help to convey a story of the children of Laos.

  • Hinged in Harmony: Doors from Different Countries Under a Shared Sky
Acrylic, photos, wood, computer parts, silk flowers,
    Size: 30 x 30
My mixed media piece, doors from the countries I’ve visited around the world, on the continents of Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America are symbols of both our differences and our shared humanity. Each is unique in culture, color, design and character, yet together they represent an extraordinary intentional and universal message that embraces welcoming, belonging and peace. Layers of texture, color and embellishment invite the viewer to come closer to recognize the beauty of diversity and the common hopes that unite us all. My doors reflect the vibrant variety of human experience and a reminder that across all borders and under the same sky there lies a common thread in multiculturalism. • acrylic on cradled wood panel 30 x 30 x 2.5" The descriptive and passionately written poem, "The Sea", by Ralph Waldo Emerson, was my inspiration for this painting. I strived to create a visual image that is as sweeping as his words! I chose to paint on natural wood and kept the sides of my painting natural, to coordinate with the organic subject matter. An integrate part of this piece is my calligraphy on all 4 sides of Emerson's words in brushstrokes of paint., harmonious with my impressionistic scene's colors, brushstrokes and mark making.

  • oil on panel 13 x 13 x 2" Jane Austen wrote more than two centuries ago, and her novels continue to resonate with readers today. They are a testament to the enduring power of literature to continue to inspire and empower women everywhere. “Do not consider me now as an elegant female intending to plague you, but as a rational creature speaking the truth from her heart.” ― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 9 x 9 x 2"
Agatha Christie said, "All I needed was a steady table and a typewriter." This painting reflects that sentiment. Books, as well as objects, tell a story and have a history. This painting celebrates my admiration for the humble typewriter. They have none of today's digital distractions, like the internet or email. You are just typing, creating a unique work of art.

  • Through Reading, We See
    oil on panel painting
    Size: 12 x 12
Books are more than vessels of knowledge—they are living landscapes. Like flowers blooming or music rising, books open new ways of seeing the world. Like a magnifying glass held to the fine script of experience, reading reveals the subtle textures of thought, history, and human emotion that might otherwise go unnoticed. With this painting I have hoped to capture the harmony between thought, beauty, and the slow, powerful rhythm of discovery.

  • oil on panel 7 x 7 x 2" Books, as well as objects, tell a story and have a history. This painting celebrates the typewriter with a nod toward the nostalgia for things in the past we still hold dear. Virginia Woolf said, “Happiness is in the quiet, ordinary things.” I hope this work reflects that sentiment.

  • Martin Newell C, M Relief Print (linoleum) on paper Size: 19.25 x 17" I made this print based on a black and white photo I took of Martin Newell. I was teaching a printmaking class in which I wanted to instruct newer students how to think about making an image without outlining the subject, but instead to utilize negative space (i.e.: high key lighting). The first pull was done with black ink on white paper, but then I thought it would be even more intriguing to use transparent process colors and layering, thus another lesson! Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on canvas 20 x 20 x .5" Statement for new works. Layering and revealing what is underneath is the basis of this new direction in my painting. This is in line with what I have always sought, the subconscious manifesting itself in the conscious execution of my work. Striping gradually evolved as a device to create a surface layer that must be penetrated to find the hidden core, the third dimension in a two dimensional work.

  • mixed media, relief print, pencil, collage 14 x 14 x 1" Combining vintage photos of older women from the 1960’s, old maps, and other paper ephemera under a matrix of relief printed houses communicate an imagined history of the Cold War, and who the unsung prime movers might have been.“Women of a certain age” have the misfortune of becoming invisible in society, but what if they used that to their advantage? A good spy is unremarkable looking, able to move freely and unnoticed, and in this case, thwarting Communism after WWII. There are cut away areas, windows to another layer, a suggestion that there is more to be revealed, and, that a house may seem simple on the surface, but hide secrets inside. The simple house shape reinforces the notion that these ladies are just typical housewives, nothing to worry about.

  • mixed media/sculpture 13 x 15.5 x 7.75" "The Sheilas" is a kinetic piece with original printmaking, self-portrait, found objects, and mirror (yes, one needs a little smoke or mirrors to do this work of spying and deception). The invisible women who helped spy during wartime and the Cold War could go unnoticed because who would look at a woman past her "prime"?! Lift the latch attached to the little red book at the top of the cabinet and reveal the "Universal Aunts" who can "Solve Your Problems", In doing so, that motion lifts an envelope that hides the younger distracting woman in the black and white photo and reveals the faces of the older women who are doing the important work of saving the free world.

  • Mila Photography Size: 7 x 10 Framed Size: 9 x 12 Seeing this young girl enjoying the holiday season even under the veil of Covid's mask caught my eye. Printing this with all black around her gives the feel of isolation and yet beauty and softness in her look and clothing. • Photography 14 x 11" When a Noreaster hits the New England coast in winter it is usually fierce. I was watching how far the breaking waves would dare to come. Rivers of water washed through the snow fence. As the water receded, the sky brightened and left behind this wonderful reflection in the sand. I was especially focused on the broken picket, then the wavering lines and the fan like fence in the foreground standing strong against the wind and waves. I could feel the back and forth tug between the man made fence and mother nature.

  • mixed media sculpture 27 x 26 x 5"
My artwork highlights current topics in society today. The title American Roulette is a play on words denoting games of chance. In America today there is always a chance of violence even in your own home. The "roulette" wheel around the center of the sculpture encircles the home showing threats of violence as the symbolic American eagle lands on top.

  • sculpture 15 x 10 x 15" Albert Einstein once wrote, "Look deep into nature and you will understand everything." I have looked at nature and seen much symbolism and metaphor for what is happening in the world today. My artwork focuses on the chaos, mystery, and whimsey in nature. The whimsey is sometimes dark, sometimes not, but always points to the foibles of human nature. Nature is innately smarter than man. It has solved many problems we are grappling with. Perhaps what surrounds us is the secret to survival. Nature has the ability to evolve and adapt to change the environmental conditions. It has slowly adapted to climate change hastened by man, but will it continue to? My ever-evolving artwork has become more activist and narrative driven, and explores some of these ideas and more.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Metal Cataclysm Cut and painted aluminum, found objects Size of Piece: 22 x 23 x 10 This is a whimsical dynamic piece with a lot of motion. • Assemblage, mixed media 52 x 28 x 32"
My artwork has evolved over time from colorful whimsical often sculptural pieces to something a bit darker. Telling a story is my goal and I have always been interested in irony and pointing out the foibles of humans going way back to my discovery of Medieval Flemish artists Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegal. I believe travel to other countries, particularly third world countries opened my eyes to conditions in the world. It took a number of years for my art and activism to merge, but my observation of nature and the nature of the human condition remain. My artwork now has a focus on environmental and climate issues. The process has become a cathartic experience for me and hopefully gives the viewer a different perspective.

  • Painting Tangled Up in Blue 20 x 20 x 1.5 in. I have a deep connection to the natural world that I see through the eyes of an artist.  My paintings capture a moment or memory of wonder, joy, and beauty, something special that caught my eye.  Paintings are inspired by the diverse colors of light, atmosphere, and nature in the  coastal landscape where I live.  I look for what is unique to convey a sense of place. Although often evoked by a fleeting moment, I translate in paint to transcend time.  Brushstrokes over glimpses of color intentionally reveal some of the painting process. • The Gathering
    Digital Photographic Print on Paper
    Size: 10 x 14
Along storied Dune Road on Long Island I became mesmerized by these different burlap encased trees. The gray day added to the feeling of an encounter with the strangeness in an other worldly landscape. Thoughts of shrouds, bondage, the mask, the other, a chrysalis all crossed my mind. They are carefully stitched and neatly tied to protect what's unseen beneath. No ordinary wrapping here. No ordinary creatures!

  • oil on Arches oil paper, mounted on stretched canvas 30 x 22 x 1.25" My concept of the seams of a society, as on a garment, refers to being placed at the edge, marginalized, or disenfranchised, but this can also indicate conditions that hold a people together, that bind. Each of my “Seams” works takes the viewer on a cultural journey. I want you to meet a few of my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances in places I have had the great fortune to visit or to work. I am excited to show how culture and economics shape people’s lives. I hope you can imagine the lives of the people I try to portray. I want to challenge stereotypes in the figurative and cultural depiction of people. In my current series of paintings, I explore the lives of Africans in Karatu, Tanzania, a rural town where I have lived and worked over several summers as a physician. People who work in or are served by the hospital live with the lingering effects of colonialism. They grapple with political, educational, and economic conditions that make it difficult to advance. I have been painting with oil on paper that I mount on canvas. I utilize my own handmade stamps developed from traditional Tanzanian kitenge cloth to print the backgrounds. My goal is to offer you a moment to slow your mind as you imagine the lives of others and explore with me the “Seams of Societies”. • pastel 12 x 9" There are two ways I approach my paintings. With abstract paintings, I start with no plan. I start with mark making, texture and/or paints, inks, etc. and let my intuition guide me. I may use acrylic, oil, ink, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, or all, along with many materials I’ve collected to add texture. I love this approach because it is so freeing. I love the play of bright colors against neutrals, dark against light, texture against smooth. I may end up with a painting I like or I may not. If not, I keep working and adding layers/scraping away until I do. Painting like this sometimes seems to be about solving problems, using my technical skills, letting my intuition guide me. With abstracts, I'm usually inspired by a strong emotion I'm feeling. The visual has more of an impact in expression than words do. The mind is too involved with words, but with visuals, so many senses and subconscious feelings come into play. I paint landscapes by planning a scene that captures; playing with different color schemes that best express what I see, doing sketches to determine the best layout and composition. The painting may or may not follow the course I planned. I get excited about the contrast between shadows and light coming from behind, or the surprising amount of color in an ocean wave, or the moodiness of a sky.
