collage 9 x 12" Different media enable a variety of ideas to form and emerge and small dimensions encourage experimentation. What one produces in monotype on a press contrasts with what one creates using encaustic and can look unlike anything done with paper collage. All three media are direct, spontaneous and playful. Here are three skyscapes or, as I prefer, three fantasies about looking out and up. A good way to begin the new year. Look Up and Listen to the Starscollage composed of monoprinted papersSize: 20 x 26I have been working on a multimedia series of collages since 2024. In this picture, I used an etching press to print templates constructed from handmade paper. I then pasted these images together to create this "monoprint collage". The title is from a haiku by Koshigaya Gozan.

collage 6 x 8" The theme "Frozen Dreams and Abstract Realities: Winter’s Dual Nature" lends itself to a variety of interpretations in different media. My submission explores oil on paper, encaustic and collage to picture the changes in nature that winter brings when hiking in the mountains or walking along the seashore or just looking out of the window. From the slopes of the Jura in France to the shores of Montauk, Long Island, and the view from our window in Dorset, Vermont, snow is the constant winter companion. oil on paper 30 x 22" Working in oil-based inks with handmade paper plates and an etching press, I created this monotype by passing the print through several iterations until I achieved the final image. When choosing a title, I read a lot of poetry while looking at the print. The selection, Music of the Spheres, is the title of a poem by Robert Morgan.

oil on paper 22 x 30" This painting reflects my long love of mountains. I lived for years in Geneva, skied and hiked in the Alps and the Jura. From the Green Mountains and White Mountains of New England to the Tetons of Wyoming, I retain vivid memories. In my imagination these impressions are transformed, reworked with many techniques, and imbued with emotions. Mountains represent many sentiments.

oil on Belgian linen 12 x 12" The apprehension of movement on abstract shapes figure predominantly in my paintings. Each individual shape is a particular motion enacted on a still substrate, in this case Belgian Linen. The stop action union of these two opposing elements, movement on stillness and the idea of their simultaneous interaction is my longtime pursuit. I wish to offer a near view of particular shapes, conversing together. I propose these conversations in a sculptural manner adding tensions of heightened light, texture and color. My pursuit concurs with my idea that motion itself as a part of life is a mysterious occurrence.

oil & mixed media 36 x 84 x 1.5"Tribute to NAWA founders and all subsequent members, names of current SC chapter along base. Divided into 3 centuries, 19, 20,21. Four founders shown handing caged birds, aka female artists, to original, Grace FitzRandolph, who frees them into next centuries. Depicts expected societal rules and fashion. Ironic use of vacuum cleaner bags for samplers, with names stitched, child like. Corsets, keys, cages, chatelain, approved art subjects. 20 century, my artistic journey with doubts, failures, dark places to hide but within glorious symphony of nature. 21 century, my confident, peaceful place with space to think and work. Carolina Wren as guardian. Birds and flight paths connect the centuries.

oil on canvas 36 x 24 x 1.75" My personal story continues to drive my artistic life. A citizen of two countries, I am in debt to both, and battle against feelings of disloyalty, so, always a parent, I try to give attention to both, at the same time coping with the frequent crises of family life. Sometimes, I am Alice down the hole, baffled, surrounded by crazy creatures, questioning my sanity and the reality of things, then I focus on the beauty and structure of nature, and wisdom returns. This is the essence of my work.

mixed media on Arches paper 30 x 22" Every Tuesday I spend time with a friend with Vascular Dementia. Just before her diagnosis she asked me to teach her to draw. Immediately, in spite of no experience at all, it was clear that she had outstanding talent. Her illness has robbed her of this gift and the opportunity of certain NAWA membership. How she would have loved this sisterhood and its sharing of ideas, joy, respect, and strength. This piece shows her feeling of disappearing, but mostly it is about our shared sorrow.

Ink, pastel, and color pencil on paper 40 x 22.5 in. Ever since antiquity, astronomers have studied the 13 phases of Venus, from her rise as the morning star, to her descent into invisibility, and her re-emergence in the evening sky. These phases occur over a 19-month cycle, marking both a physical and a spiritual passage. I expressed each phase in a different work. The journey begins with Inception, passing through Gestation, Birth, Emergence towards Fullness and Self-Discovery. Then Immersion and Transmutation are followed by Rebirth, Remembering, Wholeness, Completion. My inspiration was a found ledger of observations of the 1874 Transit of Venus, a phenomenon occurring every 243 years when the planet moves across the face of the sun. mixed media on stretched wall-hung canvas 24 x 14 x 2" In Crossings, I address the notion of a fraught crossing from one place to another. This is a continuation of the work that I began a few years ago with Night Boats. The wall-hung pieces and mixed media sculptures are patched together from a variety of media and found objects, seemingly fragile yet in fact resilient. They represent the resourcefulness and determination needed in order to undertake a perilous voyage into the unknown. Crossings also alludes to more symbolic voyages into the unknown. Physical gaps in the work, that appear to be filled with light or with or with stormy darkness, are spanned by delicate threads and illusions. Outlook Santorini Acrylic on Canvas Size of Piece: 30 x 40 x 1.5 Painting is a meditative journey for me, a way to process loss and transform grief into something vibrant and full of hope. After my brother passed away, I felt an urgent need to create—not just for the sake of making art, but as a way to heal. Through bold colors and expressive brushstrokes, I seek to uplift both myself and those who experience my work, showing that even in darkness, beauty and joy can emerge. In paintings like Outlook Santorini, New Day, and Flower Fields, I abstract natural landscapes to capture their essence and emotion. Outlook Santorini reflects the island’s peaceful vistas, translating its tranquility into layers of color and movement. New Day speaks to renewal and optimism, its light-filled hues evoking the fresh start that comes with dawn. Flower Fields is a celebration of nature’s energy, bursting with expressive colors that mirror the vitality of a landscape in bloom. Sculpture 7.5 x 3.2 x 14 in. Mano de la Vida - The Translucent Orange Alabaster stone had split at an angle, the bottom half of the stone resembled a hand and forearm. The beautiful texture, color variations and striations in the stone blended perfectly with the concept of a divine giver. The female figure held in the hand represents life, rebirth, and the transformation of oneself.

Dreaming Acrylics on Mylar Size of Piece: 20 x 16 x 1.25
As artists, we spend many hours in our studios. We are familiar with the
concept of isolation. But at the same time, we also fuel our creativity in our
outings away from the studio and by experiencing life and our surroundings
to the fullest.
This artwork was created in the middle of the pandemic...
My heart was pounding hard, ready to explode with the necessity to express
myself. I was ready to tell the world that I was alive and full of energy, love,
plans and so much to do and say... I was bursting with creativity!
And that is how this series called “Catharsis” started…

This Side Up Acrylic on Cradled Wood Size: 10 x 10 My paintings are about capturing the energy of life and I hope my viewers feel a sense of happiness when they see my work. Painting is a form of meditation, and my creative force is grief. I have found that immersing myself into creating has helped me throughout my journey of healing, and the process and vibrant colors boost me to a more optimistic state of mind. I am drawn to circles as they symbolize an eternal rhythm of revitalization. Every challenge or misstep we encounter marks another revolution around the circle. Through these cycles, we have the opportunity to learn and grow from our experiences. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

bronze 13 x 12 x 4.5" My first job after college was as a graphic designer in Lexington, Ky. Having ridden my whole life, I always wanted to train a young horse. A friend said, you have to see this colt, he’s headed to the kill pens. I paid the kill price, he’d never been handled, came right over to me, & followed me. 18 mo. old and he knew. He walked right on the trailer. For almost 20 years, Maximillion was my constant companion & soulmate through 3 states, new jobs, new relationships. Sane, willing and smart. Maximillion earned us many championships including National ones. He got sick one day, suddenly. He was almost twenty and retired, He didn’t make it through surgery. This sculpture is dedicated to him.

Nena: Rememberedacrylic, paper, lace, cloth, and other materialsSize: 20 x 34My creative passage has taken me from a realistic, almost classical representation of the human figure, towards a surrealistic world of figures and imagination where everything is possible as reality and fantasy merge. My current work consists of mixed media assemblages, acrylic paintings on canvas and some drawings. This piece is very personal, it is a portrait of my aunt. It consists of two images of her, one young one old and a variety of objects that remind me of her.

Fly Acrylic on panel Size: 12 x 4 “I begin with the horizon, its ever steady line of delineation between the spaces of land, sky, sea. In between are layers and layers of light and color, sprung from my memory but unbound by realism. I use a framework, a few rules around composition or color, but it’s the tension between what I expect and what the painting is telling me that dictates the flow and finish. I work, and wait, until the profound shifting between place and memory stills itself harmoniously.” See more at www.mjbenson.com. Painting Above the Skyline 60 x 48 x 1.5 in. My paintings are very textural. The smoothness, roughness and softness of the paint on the canvas reveal the feelings of calm, energy and resiliency. My paintings hold hundreds of lines, angles and shapes. Texture is created with the palette knife and is either quickly or slowly pushed across the surface. Paint applied in a slow billowy swirl or hard structural edges depict life’s ups and downs. My work shows a love of design and representational art. The past has come and gone and the future is something to dream away this moment to be revealed in my art. Insert Lace Silverpoint and Washi on archival paper Size: 10 x 7 Since I work from real life and am fascinated by the details one can see in the natural world, silverpoint’s quiet voice lends itself to the intimate. Since erasure is virtually impossible in this medium, the subject tends to dictate what to draw and how… which means that there is a quiet dialogue between – say, a feather or a flower – and part of my brain as I develop the drawing. It becomes entirely intuitive, for better or for worse! But nonetheless these drawings allow a rewarding glimpse at the intricacies of nature. Freshen the Flowersoil on canvas paintingSize: 24 x 20“Freshen the Flowers” is a painting about memory and traditions. I remember my mother often buying fresh flowers on Fridays and I started that habit for myself many years ago. I borrowed the name from a favorite poem by Mary Oliver because I was thinking of the quiet joys that are overlooked and that she so often writes about. My painting process is a developing story between my materials and myself. My curiosity to learn more about my family histories and understand my culture and patterns has been a large focus of my art practice. I’m interested in weaving together storytelling, cultural identity, observations of the everyday, and nostalgia. For me, the narrative I’m creating becomes secondary to the narrative a viewer creates for themself. My paintings, using rhythmic color, layers, shapes, marks and lines, evoke memories and invite you to meditate on your own personal histories.

oil on canvas 24 x 24 x 1.5" My world is best described as colorful and rhythmic. My paintings explore themes of the human condition, identity, and self-reflection, and this energetic piece strikes the balance between introspection and contemporary cultural influences. My work is process-oriented and this deeply layered, textured painting is inspired by my own memories and moments of love, joy, spirituality, conflict and resolution. I paint intuitively as I create with both reckless abandon and bold strokes that feel like an emergency and careful restraint and meticulous, purposeful marks. I love sharing the intent behind each piece but am most interested in what my work evokes for the viewer.

Oil on Canvas Magic Carpet Ride Size: 20 x 20 Framed Size: 21 x 21 As a woman artist, I have many layers - deep and contemplative, enthusiastic and free, humorous, enamored of color and shimmer, deeply caring, and marveling at life. This painting captures all of those feelings and more. As a child I loved the Arabian Nights, the exoticism of Asia, the stars in the heavens, and anything surrounding water. This pieces comes as close to anything I've done to describe my inner feminine life force. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Breakthroughoil on canvas paintingSize: 20 x 16I have a fascination for skies: clouds, variations of light, nuances of color, and the awesome scale of what is above us, ever changing in a kaleidoscope of pattern. My inspiration comes from transforming these shapes and beautiful light shows into a kind of blend between abstraction and realism. By capturing a segment of sky in patterns of light that intrigue me, I attempt to generate a sense of illumination that springs off the canvas. It can never be actual light, but the endeavor to create as close an approximation of it is what drives me.
-
acrylic, iridescent silver, & silver leaf on cradled wood panel 12 x 12 x 1.5" The focus in my art is to create works that evoke light, depth, and energy using striking juxtapositions of color. I seek to achieve luminosity in my work, using the effects of color and contrast to create these illusions of light and buoyancy. This "months of the year" series explores the light and energy of winter, in a different way than my typically bright palettes do; the light on snow, the reflective surface glinting in the sun, the rich saturation of color within a white-washed landscape is a softer wave of energy. The blues of a winter scene are vivid and deep, and veer towards purples. The use of abstraction to create these pieces was an opportunity to visually imply the energy and feeling of frozen winter scenes with all of the sparkle and shimmer of sunlight or moonlight on a surface of snow. Winter carries the energy of wind, blowing swirls of snow or tossing lazy flakes in slow motion to the ground. There is depth and a three dimensional quality about snow and ice that is intriguing in its luminosity. There can also be a quiet stillness to a winter scene that makes time stand still. Pastel 14.5 x 14.5" In all my work I try to create depth and dimension through colors, lines, and marks, drawing the viewer into my paintings, to give them a reason to look deeper into the underlying structure of the work. This piece “Mod Orange” was an exploration of the spectrum of orange. I used acrylic on a canvas paper substrate in a variety of shades and shapes. To heighten the range, I used gold leaf and metallic gold acrylic paint, glazing with orange pigments. Pastels rubbed into the surface allowed me to blend and connect the composition.
