Despite the chaos beneath, playful colors can bring us calm and joy. The process of creating That Hits the Spot was a balanced mixture of measured control and intuitively painting, each of which, in its distinct way, helped to release the angst that had been inside of me.

  • Sculpture 7.5 x 3.2 x 14 in. Mano de la Vida - The Translucent Orange Alabaster stone had split at an angle, the bottom half of the stone resembled a hand and forearm. The beautiful texture, color variations and striations in the stone blended perfectly with the concept of a divine giver. The female figure held in the hand represents life, rebirth, and the transformation of oneself.

  • This Side Up Acrylic on Cradled Wood Size: 10 x 10 My paintings are about capturing the energy of life and I hope my viewers feel a sense of happiness when they see my work. Painting is a form of meditation, and my creative force is grief. I have found that immersing myself into creating has helped me throughout my journey of healing, and the process and vibrant colors boost me to a more optimistic state of mind. I am drawn to circles as they symbolize an eternal rhythm of revitalization. Every challenge or misstep we encounter marks another revolution around the circle. Through these cycles, we have the opportunity to learn and grow from our experiences. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on canvas 29 x 35"
I used newspaper clippings as a prompt for this piece which inspired a commentary on the disruptions and eruptions within the environment, specifically the landscape. Changes that are both human and naturally caused. Included in this work is a dried and pressed lei from a trip I took to Hawaii several years ago. A symbol of the beauty that often masks the underlying chaos deep within the landscape that is begging for our attention (Lahaina Fire).

  • bronze 13 x 12 x 4.5" My first job after college was as a graphic designer in Lexington, Ky. Having ridden my whole life, I always wanted to train a young horse. A friend said, you have to see this colt, he’s headed to the kill pens. I paid the kill price, he’d never been handled, came right over to me, & followed me. 18 mo. old and he knew. He walked right on the trailer. For almost 20 years, Maximillion was my constant companion & soulmate through 3 states, new jobs, new relationships. Sane, willing and smart. Maximillion earned us many championships including National ones. He got sick one day, suddenly. He was almost twenty and retired, He didn’t make it through surgery. This sculpture is dedicated to him.

  • Fly Acrylic on panel Size: 12 x 4 “I begin with the horizon, its ever steady line of delineation between the spaces of land, sky, sea. In between are layers and layers of light and color, sprung from my memory but unbound by realism. I use a framework, a few rules around composition or color, but it’s the tension between what I expect and what the painting is telling me that dictates the flow and finish. I work, and wait, until the profound shifting between place and memory stills itself harmoniously.” See more at www.mjbenson.com. • Painting Above the Skyline 60 x 48 x 1.5 in. My paintings are very textural. The smoothness, roughness and softness of the paint on the canvas reveal the feelings of calm, energy and resiliency.  My paintings hold hundreds of lines, angles and shapes. Texture is created with the palette knife and is either quickly or slowly pushed across the surface. Paint applied in a slow billowy swirl or hard structural edges depict life’s ups and downs.  My work shows a love of design and representational art. The past has come and gone and the future is something to dream away this moment to be revealed in my art. • Silverpoint and Polychromos pencil on paper
    7 x 10"
Richard Serra's monumental, subtle, and astonishing steel sculptures in the Bilbao Guggenheim left an indelible impression on me. The surfaces of many of the sculptures are almost Japanese in effect to my mind, and I sought to evoke some of the patterns using silverpoint and a palimpsest use of Polychromos pencil.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Insert Lace Silverpoint and Washi on archival paper Size: 10 x 7 Since I work from real life and am fascinated by the details one can see in the natural world, silverpoint’s quiet voice lends itself to the intimate. Since erasure is virtually impossible in this medium, the subject tends to dictate what to draw and how… which means that there is a quiet dialogue between – say, a feather or a flower – and part of my brain as I develop the drawing. It becomes entirely intuitive, for better or for worse! But nonetheless these drawings allow a rewarding glimpse at the intricacies of nature. • oil on canvas 48 x 48 x 1.5"
Primarily rooted in abstract expressionism, my paintings reflect an evolving universe where communication is less concrete. My visual language evolved with my own memories and experiences making up the stories I needed to tell through my art. This process-oriented work explores themes of the human condition, identity, and self-reflection. It takes me back to bright spots in my memory when I felt close to starting a new chapter and the decision felt right - it felt like the punctuating marks of time of a sunrise and a sunset. The promise of a new day and the magic light that happens at both hours.

  • oil paint on canvas 30 x 24 x 1.5"
Who Told You That is a painting about shared histories-the stories that make us who we are and the stories other people tell themselves about us. Using bold colors and sculptural layers, my painting process is a developing tale and conversation between my materials and myself. To me this painting reflects an evolving universe where communication is less concrete. The narrative I’m creating becomes secondary to the narrative a viewer creates for themself. I’m interested in evoking memories and creating a history on my canvas, my own and yours, using rhythmic color, layers, shapes, marks and lines.

  • oil on canvas 24 x 24 x 1.5" My world is best described as colorful and rhythmic. My paintings explore themes of the human condition, identity, and self-reflection, and this energetic piece strikes the balance between introspection and contemporary cultural influences. My work is process-oriented and this deeply layered, textured painting is inspired by my own memories and moments of love, joy, spirituality, conflict and resolution. I paint intuitively as I create with both reckless abandon and bold strokes that feel like an emergency and careful restraint and meticulous, purposeful marks. I love sharing the intent behind each piece but am most interested in what my work evokes for the viewer.

  • Oil on Canvas Magic Carpet Ride Size: 20 x 20 Framed Size: 21 x 21 As a woman artist, I have many layers - deep and contemplative, enthusiastic and free, humorous, enamored of color and shimmer, deeply caring, and marveling at life. This painting captures all of those feelings and more. As a child I loved the Arabian Nights, the exoticism of Asia, the stars in the heavens, and anything surrounding water. This pieces comes as close to anything I've done to describe my inner feminine life force. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic, iridescent silver, & silver leaf on cradled wood panel 12 x 12 x 1.5" The focus in my art is to create works that evoke light, depth, and energy using striking juxtapositions of color. I seek to achieve luminosity in my work, using the effects of color and contrast to create these illusions of light and buoyancy. This "months of the year" series explores the light and energy of winter, in a different way than my typically bright palettes do; the light on snow, the reflective surface glinting in the sun, the rich saturation of color within a white-washed landscape is a softer wave of energy. The blues of a winter scene are vivid and deep, and veer towards purples. The use of abstraction to create these pieces was an opportunity to visually imply the energy and feeling of frozen winter scenes with all of the sparkle and shimmer of sunlight or moonlight on a surface of snow. Winter carries the energy of wind, blowing swirls of snow or tossing lazy flakes in slow motion to the ground. There is depth and a three dimensional quality about snow and ice that is intriguing in its luminosity. There can also be a quiet stillness to a winter scene that makes time stand still. • Pastel 14.5 x 14.5" In all my work I try to create depth and dimension through colors, lines, and marks, drawing the viewer into my paintings, to give them a reason to look deeper into the underlying structure of the work. This piece “Mod Orange” was an exploration of the spectrum of orange. I used acrylic on a canvas paper substrate in a variety of shades and shapes. To heighten the range, I used gold leaf and metallic gold acrylic paint, glazing with orange pigments. Pastels rubbed into the surface allowed me to blend and connect the composition.

  • Timeless Texture Encaustic Size: 10 x 8 This body of work is an exploration of the universal allure and symbolic significance of entry doors from diverse cultures around the world. As a traveler deeply attuned to the visual narratives embedded in architectural details, I have always been captivated by the intricate designs and historical echoes encapsulated within these humble thresholds. Photographing doors from bustling cityscapes to remote villages, I seek to capture not just their physical presence but the stories they silently hold. Each photograph serves as a portal, inviting viewers to contemplate the cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and societal nuances reflected in these everyday yet extraordinary structures. Inspired by these photographic narratives, I translate the essence of each door into encaustic paintings, employing this ancient wax painting technique to imbue my paintings with layers of texture, color, and symbolism. Through the meticulous process of encaustic, I aim to evoke a sense of nostalgia, curiosity, and wonder—inviting viewers to peer beyond the surface and envision the worlds that lie beyond each door. • Batik on silk mounted on canvas 40 x 30"
During my travels through Morocco, particularly in the enchanting city of Safi, I became captivated by the intricate beauty and cultural significance of their doors.  In Safi, doors are adorned with intricate tile work, reflecting the city's rich history as a center of pottery and ceramics. I never knew what I would discover as I rounded the corner in the Medina- the ancient walled part of the city. Through my photographs and batik paintings, I aim to capture the essence of these Moroccan doors—celebrating their visual splendor and the stories they silently hold, inviting viewers to journey with me into the heart of North African culture.

  • batik on silk 18 x 24"
Wherever I travel, I have always been struck by the many ways that families dry their clothing. This particular scene was photographed from a moving car on the Caribbean island of Dominica. Drying clothing outdoors is a universal occupation whether it is hanging from a balcony in Egypt to a clothesline on a Caribbean beach to a line hanging outside a home in Japan. This has lead to a series of paintings primarily using the wax and dye resist method known as batik.

  • collage; newsprint, dyed papers, recycled plastics and sashiko stitching with a vintage wood clotheshanger 36 x 17 x 3" "OMG” is a part of a series called "Woman is Boss", that makes art from the past, present. Japanese women from vintage newspapers and a 1937 travel book are shown in more submissive roles compared to women as they are viewed now. The name is derived from the facial expression of the large standing female figure on the left side viewing the female images around her. Inspiration came from repurposing a plastic commercial swimsuit hanger. This series of artworks utilizes recycled plastics, dyed papers as well as ancient newspapers, antique buttons and Sashiko stitching to create art using the female torso hanger shape.

  • photography 24 x 28.5" Shelburne Falls, MA is famous for it's "Bridge of Flowers". I spent a whole day taking photos up and down the bridge. I couldn't wait to see what photo would impress me the most when I got home. It was the Great White Trillium. A dramatic flower with wide petals and yellow stamen. It is majestic. I felt like Georgia O'Keef painting beautiful petals with streaming yellow centers splashing into one another. That's why I named this piece of artwork, My Cup Runneth Over.

  • photography 28.5 x 24" Around the Keukenof Gardens, you will find the most beautiful tulip fields in the Netherlands. The designers' arrangements of the tulips excited me. Beautiful yellows, reds, pinks, purples, and whites transformed into a magnificent painting. I was inspired to create with my camera my interpretation of the tulips. Using a Topaz filter, I was able to push and pull the colors of the tulips until I was satisfied that the Explosion of colors were perfect. I want the viewer to experience my image so that it will enhance your imagination and lift your spirit. I hope that what I have seen through my heart becomes visible through your eyes.

  • Petite Treat Sculpture: Acrylic paint on natural gourd Size: 6 x 3 x 3 I am a painter and sculptor. Materials and techniques are selected so I can invent unique images and narratives from my imagination. I employ concepts from abstraction, cubism, and surrealism to interpret the elusive qualities of time, energy, and storytelling. Primary and contrasting colors, moving lines, and overlapping shapes produce dynamic patterns and intricate designs. The natural gourd is prepared like a canvas. Opaque acrylic matte and gouache paint are rendered on the third dimensional surface creating a continuous painting involving the owner in selecting views. • acrylic paint on a natural gourd 11 x 9 x 9"
As a fine artist: painter and sculptor. I use concepts of abstraction, cubism, and surrealism to explore the elusive qualities of time, energy, and storytelling. My influences come from everywhere, other art forms, such as jazz music, and the directness of child art. My artistic goal is to create seductive surfaces and provocative forms that involve the viewer in an emotional visual adventure, where they discover associations and meaning. I explore unique materials and techniques and invent images and narratives from my imagination .In this work I am responding to the tumultuous times in which we live. The layer of faces, sizes and positioning are a metaphor for relationships.

  • acrylic 11 x 9" As a fine artist: painter and sculptor, I use concepts of abstraction, cubism, and surrealism to explore the elusive qualities of time, energy, and storytelling. My artistic goal is to create seductive surfaces and provocative forms that involve the viewer in an emotional visual adventure. This painting is executed with acrylic paint on a third dimensional gourd. I redefine the use of the natural plant gourd as a third dimensional canvas. The gourd is a member of the pumpkin family. This plant form is dried, opened and the seeds removed. The surface is primed, images are rendered and finished with a protective matte varnish. Although coated inside the vessel may not be used for liquid.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • acrylic 15 x 15" My paintings celebrate those moments when our compassion for others illuminates and transforms us and the world around us. These acts of love and kindness are often unnoticed and forgotten. The women in my work are nurturers and peacemakers. Since ancient times women have personified compassion, wisdom and peace. I am a storyteller and my paintings have been described as "visual poetry". Stories help us to remember that we are all connected, and what affects one of us, affects all of us. They have the power to inspire us to create the inner peace that sows the seeds for compassion for others. Our intimate connection with nature and our role as nurturers and protectors are reoccurring themes in my work. Albert Schweitzer once said that until we extend the circle of our compassion to all living things, we will not find peace. Acrylics and oils are my primary media. Drawing is a defining element for me, I begin by blocking out major shapes with a strong dark line. Using linear brushstrokes that create movement, unity and rhythm, I add multiple layers of color, texture, pattern and sometimes canvas, continually refining my original drawing. My goal is to tell a universal story of compassion, peace and joy.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • pastel 11 x 14" I have developed a group of totally imaginary magically realistic oil paintings that I call my “Water Circus” series. The joy of taking a man-made or natural object and creating something new and fresh is very appealing to me. I allow myself a chance to play, to feel the rhythm of their form and reveal the hidden image in a new and unique way. I like to leave all possibilities open, to start unattached to the outcome, with everything totally permitted, thus enabling me to fully enjoy the process of discovery. I make my own paint by hand mixing dry pigments with burnt plate oil (a refined linseed oil used as the binder for etching ink). Because of this, I use thin glazes of the primary colors, add Liquin to hasten the drying, and build multiple layers of opaque values of each color in the egg tempera technique manner. The finished color relationships are always a surprise. This painting is a portrait of characters developed in this series.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Primeval Caprice is a conceptual abstract interpreting the both the repetitive, predictable patterning and surprising randomness of our biological world. As there will always be more to learn about the unseen that makes up everything, this work seeks to engage in a playful conversation with surprises that will reveal themselves in time. Recognizing that we are all "made up of the same stuff," my hope is that the visual connection viewers may make with the piece will plant the seeds for this awareness in other aspects of our lives, especially those that seek to sow division.

Synaptogenesis is a process that directs the formation of synaptic contacts. Synaptic contact is necessary for the transmission, analysis, and comprehension of stimuli meant to aid the body in functioning, but also in the development of language, critical thinking, and intelligence. As a philosophical, humanist artist, this painting and its theme become allegories for my intentions to foster and nurture new connections through art.

  • acrylic, airbrush, alcohol ink, oil pastel 40 x 48 x 1.5" Our world sometimes seems to be buffeted by forces beyond our grasp or comprehension. This diptych is informed by the "weather" of culture, politics, religion, differing ideologies. Much like a meteorologist might follow radar maps to stay informed on what's coming, sometimes the "weather" can still take us by surprise. Will it be sunny and predictable? Will it be turbulent and stormy? Looking at daily life through this filter, allows me some solace in letting go of things over which I have no control (like the real weather).
