This piece is titled Dazzle after the term used to describe a herd of Zebras. A dazzle of zebras creates a mesmerizing appearance that protects the group.ion to the individuals in the group. Ironically, while seeing all the stripes together serves to confuse predators, their unique pattern also aid in individual recognition among zebras. As the sight of a dazzle celebrates the beauty of both the collective and the individual, it also reminds us to cherish our common humanity while honoring the special qualities that make each one of us unique.

  • Mixed media, drawing on paper 24 x 18 x 1 in.   Lena is my oldest grandchild and only granddaughter. Although she lives on the West coast, we have always shared a special bond. This summer, while she, her father and brother were visiting us in Virginia, she got her first period. Later, as we sat together, I began to sketch. At one point, she created a peep hole to look through as we talked. That gesture portrayed for me the ambivalence of the moment. It felt as though she was looking out at the future, as she contemplated the consequences of her body changing to her adult self. Her pose captured he tension between childhood and adulthood, highlighting the uncertainty and conflicting emotions that come with this transition   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media painting 30 x 40 x 2" The Sheep in Snow is a 30 x40” mixed media painting on Rives BFK paper. I adhered the original drawing onto a cradled wood panel. I then continued to paint into it and complete it with varnish. The gradual merging of the sheep and the snow in the background is reminiscent of many a snowstorm on the road to Syracuse where the snow clouded the vision ahead. I've been doing research on the treatment of Asian American immigrants in Nevada. Often, their bodies are buried in unmarked graves and the land used for commercial purposes. The most egregious example would be the 10-15 Chinese American immigrants buried under mining waste in Tonopah, Nevada. There is universality in every specificity. What happened is Tonopah is representative of many in our country, buried in unmarked graves, discarded once our utilitarian value has ceased. This is one mixed media work as part of a series as a response to the continuing mistreatment of Asian Americans and the accompanying diaspora that follows.

  • cut & shredded magazine paper 11 x 14" This collage is part of a series about the condition of asylum seekers and the parallel with the religous pilgrims of the past. Both traveled great distances on foot. Both believed in the existence of sanctuary based on faith, the faith that their hope of salvation existed in a physical location. Both are confronted with perils of travel and some never arrive at their hoped for destinations. The parallels reveal that suffering is a part of the human condition historically and in modernity. We like to believe in the advent of modernity that such suffering should be a thing of the past. It's up to all of us to make that change to minimalize the suffering of our fellow beings. • silverpoint on paper 4 x 7 x .5" Winter’s cold clarity of light echoes silverpoint’s play of light from metal particles, as in a scene of the skyline silhouettes of sentinel trees I drew in chilly Brittany, as I huddled in my car. In the Blue Mountains, a dead pine tree epitomized the wintertime quiet of death, hibernation or new life forming. Frozen realities also use winter symbolically. The genesis of Frozen in Time (Japan) was a photograph my grandfather took in 1924 Japan, a country shocked and reeling after the Great Kanto Earthquake: a photographic record of time frozen, a landscape long forgotten and changed, yet to me utterly poignant and eloquent. The ocean delivers gifts of beauty in special ways. This piece is intended to invoke thoughts of unexpected tenderness via the tumbling, rustling, and tossing of the currents. After being carefully sheltered by a jagged, stone-like exterior, the gentle, shiny abalone interior holds a surprising hue. The tender pearl contained within a myriad of colorful hues displays proof that beauty can be carefully created and then surrendered from within the center of the toughest elements. Abalone Heart reminds us that we are strong and resilient. We will render the product of our worth despite the storms we experience.

Abstraction takes the eye through an adventure. It has evolved from a formal piece into a more interesting, deeper, and more informed version of itself. Layers emerged, delivering hidden gems. It has become one of my favorite pieces because it just keeps giving. Dark tones are filled with a surprising myriad of color that prove that there is no real black, but rather a spectrum of deepness within color asking for light to draw out character within them. Look further at these color-filled dark areas, and as the eye searches, this piece will keep changing and rewarding your view.

  • digital (1 of 10) 8.5 x 11" Creators of many kinds are recognized while incredible artists go unrecognized, have their work undermined, undervalued, and dismissed due to the melanin in their skin. These pieces aim to introduce an important group of rarely recognized artists. These female black fine artists of the 18th & 19th centuries not only sold their work but flourished during decades of our country’s deeply racist and dark underbelly. These women deserved our respect then, and they do now. Edmonia Lewis, Sculptor of stone. Elizabeth Catlett, Fine Artist & Sculptor. • oil on canvas 24 x 18" The painting is based on two stages of a dawn off my back porch, looking over the Salton Sea. Earlier the sky was darker, later, more light comes in. During this time the clouds also change. The two paintings, done on lose canvas, were refractured - cut up and reassembled - mounted on a stretched canvas - to incorporate the two phases. The following poem is written for and painted into the painting: Storm clouds, fluffy clouds All the product of weather, changes are the key.

  • refractured oil with poem
    24 x 20 x 1"
My work is about sky.  We live in the sky, usually at ground level, and it is the most volatile and vibrant part of our world, our every next breath. Refracturing cuts and reassembling the image into the pieces we focus on before our mind stitches it back together to one scene.   My addition of poetry that I write for the skyscape guides the user to the feeling behind the painting.  Sunset brought the proof, this was a beautiful day, it ended in gold.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

7.5 x 10.75" It's about time catalogs the journey of my friend as she succumbed to cancer. The handles clock has hours of, for example; 'Stroke', 'Chemotherapy', 'Cancer being held in check', Radiation. The swinging bear the words 'I know the cancer will take me, I just want some more time'. Bending light is inspired by one of the many dawns off my back porch looking east across the Salton Sea. These colors would be from a more humid summer morning, The haiku I wrote for and painted into it reads: Heat rises in waves Land warming sky, bending light into dizziness.

  • 4 refracted watercolors on up-cycled box with poem 6 x 16 x 11"
An old jewelry box was up-cycled - the four surfaces cleaned and 4 refracted watercolors added to correspond with each of the four lines of a poem written for the box. Sky knows the snow will cloak the resting branches Sky knows the tilting of the earth will warm the trees and bring them to life Sky knows the heat of the summer will bring the fruit ready for harvest Sky knows the falling of leaves returns the strength of the tree to the earth for the next year. Most of the other surfaces are just left as they were, to remind the user of the box's previous life. Acrylic glazing makes the box a useable item.

  • oil 22 x 30 x 1" A friend was travelling in Iceland and took a photo of this dawn, while taking a trip to see the waterfalls at Selfoss and Dettifoss. I named it for the falls that sound more like 'Self Loss' because the absorption into this sky is a way to lose yourself. The following words were written for and are painted into it: The Road to Selfoss, the dawn to openness, the sky to everything.

  • Mixed Media Divine Dive Into Consciousness 11.75 x 11.75 in. This piece captures the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability. The figure, falling back into tall grass, embodies the beauty found within us all, inviting a sense of connection to the world around us. His outward-reaching hand encourages us to embrace our authentic selves, while the grass symbolizes the grounding presence of nature. Surrounding him, the grass represents not only our connection to nature but also how nature reaches out to us, inviting us to find solace and refuge. This work explores the fragile strength inherent in self-acceptance, reminding us that true brilliance lies in celebrating our shared humanity and our intrinsic bond with the natural world. • oil 30 x 20 x 1" Resilience Blooms: Surrendering to Growth is an oil painting that encapsulates the transformative journey of self-discovery and healing. At the heart of the artwork stands a woman, symbolizing the collective human experience and the pivotal moment when one realizes their worth and confronts their fears and past traumas. Surrealistically intertwined with the landscape, she signifies that our past is an inseparable part of us, but by facing it, we can foster personal growth and empowerment.

This painting captures a memory of mine, a day spent climbing through grassy hills with my friend Louise. I am always wondering what it means to make art at a time when it seems we humans are not up to maintaining the health of our beautiful planet and its creatures. How can I just sit around and make pictures? What I do know is that for me, making art is like being a therapist (my profession for almost fifty years), and is like living life. Everything has a way of falling apart and then gathering together, making form out of the unformulated, continually layering and digging beneath the layers. The complexities of abstraction, color, line, and texture are the tools I employ in my passionate reach for exploration of the not yet imagined.
