These images offer us rare moments of solitude, time to slow down and observe the world around us, and to enjoy quiet beauty and serenity. I use water and light as beautiful threads that draw the eye in. The quality of light is of paramount importance, defining the textures and forms in nature, and patterns of light and shadow. In these images, I combined infrared film negatives with the platinum/palladium printing process to capture a softer, mystical effect, evoking late 19th century idyllic landscapes and lending a poetic quality to the images.

Playfully we encounter many different animals throughout this landscape, even a dog with green dancing shoes! Being in nature reminds me of the paradox of our own complexity and our own smallness. Our feeling both small and vast in the natural world leads to stillness. In the stillness, we become aware of our inner light. This is the light of our true nature and our sacred heart.   • Acrylic Summer Creekside Size: 20 x 20 Frame Size: 21 x 21 After art school, I lived in Alaska for several years, an experience which profoundly impacted me and my art. After long winters, as the snow started to melt and the ice started to break, unique colors emerged throughout all of nature. In "Summer Creekside", I play with darks and lights to re-create the bright Alaska summer nights when the sun would set close to midnight. It blooms only once a year in the darkness of the night and withers in the morning. It was such a profound lesson to me that nature allows such magnificence to occur in darkness. Applying this lesson to my own life, I was encouraged in my personal health challenges. Even in the hardships and darkness, I should continue fighting because beauty flourishes even in the most adverse of circumstances.

When I start a new portrait, I work to establish a faithful depiction of my subject first, through careful sketching and underpainting, paying close attention to the underlying bone structure, musculature and proportion. Then, with my choices of color, texture, brushwork, and some intuition, I try to go beyond, to capture a sense of the subject’s inner self as well.   A finished painting conveys a likeness, but hopefully also a presence; when you look at it, you might feel it is looking back at you. How the wind can create a ripple in a pond, a flock of birds descending on a field, or how sunlight can illuminate the side of a building are small miracles that happen all around us. In my latest series of oil paintings called Old Souls, I have paid homage to the trees I’m familiar with as I progress through my daily life and work. I thought of these paintings more as portraits of friends than as landscape paintings. I believe nature is intertwined with our lives and has an awareness of our human activity.     In my work, I have at times carved female figures in place of traditional male figures, sometimes with animal attributes, like horns. Nyami Nyami shows here the face of a woman, with a snake tightly wrapped around her body. She bears the name of an African river god portrayed traditionally as a snake. The construction of the Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River in the 1950’s caused the forced resettlement of an entire population under the British rule. Today, this piece is a call for environmental protection. It is meant to bring attention to the many indigenous sites that are threatened by pipelines, mining and human greed throughout the world.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.  
  • stone 20 x 9 x 9" Bodhisattva embodies two defining aspects of my life. It reflects my earlier interest as a Buddhist scholar and my concern for the environment in our global effort to recycle and reuse unwanted materials. The piece is made out of an old building stone discarded during renovation and other salvaged items from Community Forklift, a non-profit reuse center in the DC area. Vowing to promote spiritual awakening and save all beings, the bodhisattva aspires to enlightenment for the good of others.

  • gold painted marble heads on wood stand 7 x 18 x 12" Two lines of thought influence my work: The prehistoric Neolithic Period and Buddhist figures. I used leftover stone and reclaimed wood to create both landscapes. Gold paint is the latest addition to my work. One landscape tells the story of Venus of Willendorf, whom I imagine being a female direct carver standing tall among her self-made stone sculptures. In the other piece, I created the burial ground of four parts that make up a whole: the self, the person, the living soul, and the being reunited in their resting place. The four selves are a recurrent theme in my work.

    I work on the stone directly. Memories feed my inspiration. Those of past and present studies and travels around the world. Direct carving means letting the stone guide you. It is an act of faith that aims to bring balance to my mind and body as I look forward to satisfying my insatiable curiosity. The Universe, I see, reveals itself by expressing itself and knows itself through every bit of experience, and so is my work as a female sculptor, only limited in the process by the material circumstances I encounter: the quality, size, and veins of the marble.

I arrange and rearrange and look for backgrounds, and then click-click, I have a photo. Next I work on variations, exploring where the graphic wants to go, revealing hidden layers. Colorful women in abstract shapes and light illustrate women’s inner strength and balance. Every time I pick up my scissors and begin anew I am excited to see who emerges. I started this practice when checking in with a therapeutic light box for my seasonal affective disorder. I started exploring ways of arranging shapes and colors with layers.     Squaring the Circle- Structure is dancing with the intuitive, both are needed. The expression "squaring the circle" is sometimes used as a metaphor for trying to do the impossible. A women’s work is never done. Mindfulness is key. If you say that someone squares the circle, you mean that they bring together two things, which are normally thought to be so different that they cannot exist together. Mathematically, it has to do with irrational and rational numbers and mathematicians have been working on it since ancient Greece. A woman’s world today is complicated.   • Collage 15 x 11 in. I love collage. I collect paper, cut it up, and move the bits around until an image comes together. With no idea in mind, it’s just play & discovery, with a surprise reward at the end! “Girlfriends” reflects new techniques I was trying out: painting and printing on wallpaper scraps and deli paper, and, experimenting with “faux” encaustics: transferring an image onto matte Dura-lar Mylar and adhering it image side down, producing a translucent, beeswax effect. Using people as subject matter is also new. A friend had given me a packet of old photos, and immediately, they spoke to me.

Like Native American "dream catcher," portals offer a landscape of positive energies surrounded by edges that can snag and encumber the viewer as they reach for the magic in the center. Portals reflect opportunities for a quiet, meditative, and peaceful space encumbered by unknown obstacles, dangers, and barriers. One must focus on the safety and quietness in the portal's center, while also navigating the broken, seen and unseen impediments that may interfere with the journey forward.

    In times of darkness, there is always a ray of hope, positivity, and light. The painting, Always Follow the Light, is an image to remind the viewer to never give up. There is a choice to seek the possibility that comes in every phase of life. It is within each soul to seek that special light. This painting is dedicated to my mother, who while battling cancer, spoke her last words " Well, I have had a wonderful life". She always followed the light.

    Seeing Land After a Long Journey is inspired by my many crossings of oceans where no land is seen for many days. There is a special feeling of excitement when experiencing the first signs of land such as twigs, birds and the distant change in the horizon. With each crossing, I was reminded about explorers like Columbus and his crew who voyaged into the unknow and had sense of excitement and relief too when they saw the first signs of land.

  • soft pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes Touch sanded paper 18.25 x 13.375" My work is inspired by objects and scenes from the natural world. I work mainly in soft pastels, and watercolor. When I'm observing something, I'm not simply noticing the object or the landscape before me, I see the dance of colors in color, the lyricism of line, and the play of shapes through value and space. We are surrounded by sublime beauty in the mundane as much as in the extraordinary, and it's this transitory beauty that I am compelled to capture. Aiming to make my work accessible and easy to understand, I prefer to create representational work.

  • Works on Paper 36 x 36 in. This piece, Windblown, is part of a series called Transitions. When I started this series I was touched by the lament of “women of a certain age”, feeling that they were invisible, overlooked, and insignificant. This series is my attempt to visually capture this time in a woman’s life as an ending as well as a new beginning as the sunflower emits its seeds and begins again.  The subject of this work is an aged, dried sunflower.
