Part of my "International Children Series", my photo captures an authentic moment in 2022 of two sisters in front of their living quarters in their Laotian village. There is an irony to their donated GAP clothing and Nike sandals, dirty and worn, in the materialistic standards and values of life in America. Looking further into this photograph, one can see a typical home in Laos, bringing to reality the life of these young girls. Most importantly, their natural expressions add emotional overtones to this piece. as they help to convey a story of the children of Laos.

I strived to create a visual image that is as sweeping as his words! I chose to paint on natural wood and kept the sides of my painting natural, to coordinate with the organic subject matter. An integrate part of this piece is my calligraphy on all 4 sides of Emerson's words in brushstrokes of paint., harmonious with my impressionistic scene's colors, brushstrokes and mark making.

mixed media, relief print, pencil, collage 14 x 14 x 1" Combining vintage photos of older women from the 1960’s, old maps, and other paper ephemera under a matrix of relief printed houses communicate an imagined history of the Cold War, and who the unsung prime movers might have been.“Women of a certain age” have the misfortune of becoming invisible in society, but what if they used that to their advantage? A good spy is unremarkable looking, able to move freely and unnoticed, and in this case, thwarting Communism after WWII. There are cut away areas, windows to another layer, a suggestion that there is more to be revealed, and, that a house may seem simple on the surface, but hide secrets inside. The simple house shape reinforces the notion that these ladies are just typical housewives, nothing to worry about.

Photography 14 x 11" When a Noreaster hits the New England coast in winter it is usually fierce. I was watching how far the breaking waves would dare to come. Rivers of water washed through the snow fence. As the water receded, the sky brightened and left behind this wonderful reflection in the sand. I was especially focused on the broken picket, then the wavering lines and the fan like fence in the foreground standing strong against the wind and waves. I could feel the back and forth tug between the man made fence and mother nature.

I have looked at nature and seen much symbolism and metaphor for what is happening in the world today. My artwork focuses on the chaos, mystery, and whimsey in nature. The whimsey is sometimes dark, sometimes not, but always points to the foibles of human nature. Nature is innately smarter than man. It has solved many problems we are grappling with. Perhaps what surrounds us is the secret to survival. Nature has the ability to evolve and adapt to change the environmental conditions. It has slowly adapted to climate change hastened by man, but will it continue to? My ever-evolving artwork has become more activist and narrative driven, and explores some of these ideas and more. Assemblage, mixed media 52 x 28 x 32"My artwork has evolved over time from colorful whimsical often sculptural pieces to something a bit darker. Telling a story is my goal and I have always been interested in irony and pointing out the foibles of humans going way back to my discovery of Medieval Flemish artists Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegal. I believe travel to other countries, particularly third world countries opened my eyes to conditions in the world. It took a number of years for my art and activism to merge, but my observation of nature and the nature of the human condition remain. My artwork now has a focus on environmental and climate issues. The process has become a cathartic experience for me and hopefully gives the viewer a different perspective.

She lives with Rett syndrome a rare genetic neurological disorder that affects the way the brain develops. She is nonverbal. Each of my “Seams” works takes the viewer on a cultural journey. I want you to meet a few of my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances in places I have had the great fortune to visit or to work. I am excited to show how culture and economics shape people’s lives. I hope you can imagine the lives of the people I try to portray. I want to challenge stereotypes in the figurative and cultural depiction of people. In my current series of paintings, I explore the lives of Africans in Karatu, Tanzania, a rural town where I have lived and worked over several summers as a physician. People who work in or are served by the hospital live with the lingering effects of colonialism. They grapple with political, educational, and economic conditions that make it difficult to advance. I have been painting with oil on paper that I mount on canvas. I utilize my own handmade stamps developed from traditional Tanzanian kitenge cloth to print the backgrounds. My goal is to offer you a moment to slow your mind as you imagine the lives of others and explore with me the “Seams of Societies”. pastel 12 x 9" There are two ways I approach my paintings. With abstract paintings, I start with no plan. I start with mark making, texture and/or paints, inks, etc. and let my intuition guide me. I may use acrylic, oil, ink, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, or all, along with many materials I’ve collected to add texture. I love this approach because it is so freeing. I love the play of bright colors against neutrals, dark against light, texture against smooth. I may end up with a painting I like or I may not. If not, I keep working and adding layers/scraping away until I do. Painting like this sometimes seems to be about solving problems, using my technical skills, letting my intuition guide me. With abstracts, I'm usually inspired by a strong emotion I'm feeling. The visual has more of an impact in expression than words do. The mind is too involved with words, but with visuals, so many senses and subconscious feelings come into play. I paint landscapes by planning a scene that captures; playing with different color schemes that best express what I see, doing sketches to determine the best layout and composition. The painting may or may not follow the course I planned. I get excited about the contrast between shadows and light coming from behind, or the surprising amount of color in an ocean wave, or the moodiness of a sky. Acrylic 13 x 13" I seek to express the intangible experience of spirit. It is the awareness of the big picture. It is about the meaning of life and connection to self and others. I am exploring and expressing an inner experience through abstract images. I paint images that feel solid and spacious which is how I feel when I am experiencing “presence”. I have always noticed the subtleties of life whether it was observing beauty in nature or man-made, overcoming difficult challenges, and the complexities of the human experience. I process these experiences through painting.

I Wonder... Pastel Size: 9 x 9 - I’m primarily a portrait artist as I find nothing more visually compelling, more inspiring, than the human face and figure. Much of my work is done through Zoom, which gives me the opportunity to paint people who can be anywhere. My usual chosen medium is soft pastels. - I was excited to paint the renowned actor Alfre Woodard at a Zoom session hosted by an artist who knew her. Starting with a pastel pencil sketch, I then used a yellow pastel pencil to indicate every place the light touched Alfre’s face and hair. Knowing the location of the lightest spots remained important when applying multiple layers of pastel pencil and soft pastel. I loved painting her beautiful hair, using many layers of alternating warm and cool colors. - I Wonder… is a pastel portrait of a model I’ve painted many times – I hoped to capture her intriguing expression as she appeared to be deep in thought. I used a similar process for this as for the Woodard portrait: after the initial sketch and yellow highlights, I applied multiple layers of pastel pencil and soft pastel to build up the image and convey a mood of quietness. - The model for Graceful is a dancer whose quick poses demonstrate her love of dance. Though the shipping container was all white, one cube contained a circle of radiating bars that could be painted to look like the underside of a manhole cover. I added a rim and painted the interior metallic copper. Cheesecloth was glued over the packing peanuts filling the empty cube. fiber art 12 x 12" The muscle memory of sewing is guided by recollections, stringing the grit and tooth of an abduction, the furrows of seams and seeming, of life stories fought out, patched out before paint would dry, better rather knit, pounded out in coarse intermingling of fibers, torn out and restitched and needle felted, a forgiving medium where every loop can be redone and undone, tacked and basted anew. Each embroidery, created from an original figure drawing is transformed into needlepoint, a quilt of pores, threaded with twenty or more colors, bounded and knotted with each physical perforation, a performative puncture onto self-healing felt. Bonnie MacAllister renders in figurative embroidery, handspun threads, globally sourced farm wools and fibers, and recycled textiles. The language of textiles is also that of connection, threading together identity, history, biology, and personal experience. Pastel 14 x 13 in. 'At the Met' is a representational depiction in pastel of a group of young adults taking a break from viewing the masterpieces surrounding them. I was particularly struck by the beauty of the far right girl's red hair and how it contrasted with the cool hues of her surroundings - in addition, the dynamics of the four youths resting on the bench seemed to encapsulate an iconic tourist experience AT the MET and motivated me to want to paint this scene.

I was thinking about the threat we have become to our natural environment and remembering Magritte’s floating men in bowler hats. After the pandemic hit, I continued the series with another twist. Rather than one or lots of trees leaving, chunks of isolated areas lifted into the sky. Autumn Passing is one of these pieces. acrylic 17.5 x 21.5" As a young adult I read the book, Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The story stayed with me throughout my life, it was about "the deterioration of a woman's mental health while she is on a "rest cure" on a rented summer country estate with her family. Her obsession with the yellow wallpaper in her bedroom marks her descent into psychosis from her depression throughout the story." She would pick away at the wallpaper, creating images. Maybe it was the idea of what our minds are capable of, how much they can lead us in one direction or another. From elation to depression. My painting reflects both sides of this experience.

Acrylic on Canvas Hope Springs Size: 48 x 48 x 3 Birds began to appear in my work at the start of the Pandemic. The beginning of the bird fashionistas - little characters that emulate the personalities of the people around me: They are fun to make and are a constant reminder of what is important in my life. When someone asks me “What happened to you during the pandemic?” I think “Well, a lot,” but the constant reminder of life came from looking through the living room window, watching a cascade of different types of birds vying for their spot at the bird feeder. Over and over and over! So many hours spent on the sofa just watching them and being thankful for being alive. While sitting on that sofa I did draw a LOT in my journal book. I wrote about the places I’ve been to, the people I’ve been with, meanings of the icons and images I was incorporating in my work. When we all began to venture out of our houses, I was more mindful of the journaling process and drawing the “memories” of place. The images in the journal book are the genesis of this work.
