How are awards juried for NAWA Exhibitions?

For the Annual Members Exhibition, NAWA recruits 3 outside Jurors for Awards. All Signature Members are accepted into the Annual, so the jurying is for Awards only. The exhibit is a benefit of membership.

Other than for the Annual Members Exhibition, all awards in the NAWA exhibits are Peer Juried. One exception is if a venue requests to have their curator(s) choose the awards.

PeerJurors are Signature Members who are in NAWA for a minimum of 3 years, or have the 3-year requirement waived with proof of experience. In addition to the 3-year requirement, Peer Jurors are certified through a Zoom meeting where they view a presentation that goes over the basics of jurying for NAWA exhibits. After attending one of these sessions (offered periodically), their name goes onto the list of Peer Jurors, and a volunteer, currently Diane Salamon, schedules volunteers each time a jurying is needed for an exhibition.

NAWA rotates Peer Jurors for each exhibition, so there are always different members jurying. If a Peer juror enters the exhibit, they are not eligible to jury that particular show.

Usually NAWA calls to the award winners the week before the Reception or “Meet the Artists” when there are awards so they can be present for the announcement.
