GYA: Celebrating NAWA’s 135th Anniversary During Women’s History Month 2024

In this momentous year, we commemorate the establishment by our five visionary founding women in New York City who aspired to be recognized as professional artists, providing them with places to exhibit their work along with the intellectual and artistic support of a group of their peers. NAWA pays tribute to their legacy through a diverse array of exhibitions, historical presentations, and panel discussions.

“Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories” will grace the Vanda Gallery in New Rochelle, NY, throughout the entire month of March. This in-person, juried exhibition features Signature members. Zahra Jlayer, the founder and curator of the gallery, is a dedicated Signature Member of NAWA, tirelessly fostering a vibrant community of creative artists.

The Hollis Taggart gallery in New York City joins the celebration of Women’s History Month with an in-person, juried exhibition showcasing Signature members from March 21 through April 20, 2024. Established in 1979, Hollis Taggart is renowned for presenting significant works of American art, tracing the trajectory of American art movements from the Hudson River School to American Modernism, and the Post-War and Contemporary eras. Their programs reflect a profound commitment to scholarship and highlighting the work of under-recognized artists.

Concurrent with the NAWA exhibition, Hollis Taggart will feature the work of Audrey Flack, a distinguished NAWA Honorary Vice President. At 92, Flack continues to create art across an ever-evolving range of styles and mediums. An author as well, her memoir, chronicling her life in the arts from the era of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s to her role as one of the early founders of the Photo-Realistic movement in the 60s and 70s, will be published in March. Her body of work includes heroic public and private sculptures depicting imaginary heroines and classic women goddesses.
