Did You Know That NAWA is Collecting Sightings of  Historic NAWA Luminaries?

Did You Know that NAWA Public Relations and the Historical Research Team are working in conjunction to document sightings of NAWA Honorary Vice Presidents and esteemed historic members?

Audrey Flack at the Southampton Arts Center on November 12, 2023

The effort to promote NAWA’s rich history and contribution to the fine arts community since its founding in 1889 is a project even more important as the organization approaches its 135th year anniversary.

Artwork by women artists has recently been a focus as museums, institutions and galleries recognize an entire cohort of artists that have been long overlooked. Their attention is drawn to recognize the contribution that women have made to our culture. NAWA is completely focused on the empowerment of women artists.

Recently there has been a variety of exhibitions in the NY area that have included NAWA women. We have been and will continue writing articles featuring the historic NAWA artists and Honorary Vice President’s shows and talks given by and about our organization.

With the help of our members across the country, we ask you to alert us to sightings of historic NAWA member’s artwork you see in museums. We will check the NAWA archives to confirm their affiliation with NAWA and then write a short article with a photo of their work which you will supply. These will be added to the Historical Research Database the team is compiling.

An example is the recent sighting of our Honorary Vice President Audrey Flack which is documented on our blog with her work in the Heroines of Abstract Expressionism exhibition at the Southampton Arts Center on Long Island. Here is the link to that article.

Recently at the Nassau County Museum of Art, we encountered a painting by our historic member, Anna Walinska, (1906-1997). There will be another article about her that will be added to the NAWA Historical Research Database.

If you have sightings of historic NAWA Members in exhibitions please let the committees know so it can be researched and documented for all to enjoy and learn from.
