I did not end with the final online publication, but it led me to the study of our earth and world with both beauty and concern. It is dimensional building of relief in my paintings, that maybe, just maybe, will bring the immediate concerns of present life to our touch. “It is not easy to be authentic, letting vulnerability highlight a joy for creating. Do you remember when we just played? How our identity was intertwined with the greatest freedom of expression? It is the source of mark, color, layers, dimension, and texture. It is a view of the changing world, through a personal transformative experience.” The inspiration for Land of the Midnight Sun was a summer trip to Alaska. Elaine Soltis is a Mixed Media Artist, with her fine art designed in three studios, the urban Studio 211 Goggle Works, Reading, PA, woodland Nolde Forest region of her PA home, and a welcomed natural beach retreat to family visits along the shores of Lake Erie, NE Ohio.

  • acrylic paint, mediums, and varnish 30 x 30 x 2" Remember when we could just play? The idea of endless hours of sunlit fun, without the concern of being caught in the dark, has gone into the dream world of Land of the Midnight Sun. What if we lived in Fairbanks, Alaska? Would it be different? Would we play with abandon after work, as the sun found us hiking, running, and exploring far into the passage of the day? I imagined creatures, large and small, once hidden by shadow, now slithering and sliding, rolling and romping. The sunshine phenomenon was used to bring fantasy and a cornucopia of treasures, as a reminder that out of shadows comes the light of fun and laughter.

  • watercolor paper handcarved with scalpels 15 x 19 x .1" My bas relief paper sculptures allow me to explore the subtle nuances of light and shadow, as well as the delicate interplay between positive and negative space. Fauna features an enchanting array of florals, fauna, and wild flowers that have a touch of whimsy. Here I use watercolor paper, and scalpels to carve into the paper. I rarely plan in detail what I will sculpt and prefer to start and flow. Each piece is unique and takes multiple hours. I like to offset the rhythmic and repetitive patterns with a little chaos, opting for a dynamic and occasionally irregular composition, as if to convey the petals on paper breaking free from the substrate that binds them.

This work is prompted by the clean and efficient movement of the completely developed physique of an Olympic speed skater. • oil, acrylic on canvas 40 x 30 x .5" One of my defining principle is establishing an open dialogue between forms and color in all aspects of my artworks, and to inspire a new way of thinking, as abstract art promotes the ability to express freely in an original way. As a trained classical painter, I chose to expand my artistic view on abstract forms that blend lines and color. I strive to capture the mood of the surrounding world through these modalities and am drawn towards the simple, unpretentious, and quotidian in framing my vision of reality. As a versatile artist, I work with traditional materials such as oil, watercolor, ink, and pencil, creating landscapes and still life artworks that truly capture the beauty in seemingly mundane objects and spaces. The creation of my art is a visceral experience, with my art being the tool with which I can express, envision, and share with others in unique ways the concepts of life that drive humanity most—such as love, truth, and the underlying beauty of the everyday experience.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • watercolor, ink on paper 30 x 24" The painting depicts love and passion, often portrayed through the intimate interaction of the men and women in the piece. Using lines combined with watercolor and ink adds a sense of movement, life, and vitality to the figures as if they are in a passionate embrace. The composition suggests that the images are not only passionate lovers but also close friends, their connection goes beyond physical, and it is a deep and meaningful bond. Abstract elements add depth and complexity to the composition. The lines create a sense of life and energy, while the red adds emotion and intensity. I use abstract elements to create a sense of emotion and to convey a deeper meaning beyond the symbolic image

  • Outside Inside Acrylic on Canvas Board Size of Piece: 24 x 30 I feel that every human being is like a portal. We first encounter the external frame, but an entire universe unfolds as we step through the doors. Our inner world shapes our outer reality, just as the outer world, in turn, influences our inner state. A lingering sense of loneliness etches itself into our expressions, while a habit of noticing beauty and goodness softens our features, bringing light to our presence. Perhaps the most powerful anti-aging secret is a genuine smile—one born from childlike trust in life, the belief that everything is unfolding as it should, and the certainty that our adventures are limitless. There is an ever-present, knowing part of us—an angelic essence—watching over, guiding, and smiling at our journey through our many mystical paths. This painting emerged as an unfolding, evolving process that presented infinite possibilities until I realized it was not about choosing a single direction. Instead, I was capturing a state of being, a process of disc. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Unbreakable Bloom Paper, Watercolor, Pencil, Pen, Marker Size of Piece: 9 x 12 I start with the line and allow the line to guide me to a story. Once I see a story, I bring it out for others. I love using mixed media because of the variety of textures and marks I can create. Unbreakable Bloom Like a bouquet woven from resilience and love, these six women stand together, their strength intertwined. They lift one another, knowing that surrender is never an option when those they love depend on them. Reflections She looks back, not to dwell in the shadows of the past but to gather its light. Mother Stories A mother weaves an enchanting story in which the air around them shimmers with magic. The barely visible figures exist within a dreamlike haze of swirling greens, purples, and golden hues. In Breaking Through the Matrix, I explore the complexities of our conditioned perceptions and the struggle to break free from the confines of a familiar narrative. This mixed-media piece combines painting, texture, and symbolism to convey a profound narrative of liberation and restraint. At the heart of the artwork is a figure, painted in deep green tones, standing resolutely amidst the expanse of a tranquil lake. This figure represents the individual, immersed in the vastness of existence yet tethered to the constructs of their surroundings. The green hues symbolize growth, renewal, and the ever-present desire for liberation. Embedded within the artwork are delicate gemstones and chains.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

In the realm where Veil reigns supreme, Curiosity dances like a shimmering dream. Beyond its folds, mysteries softly gleam, Inviting hearts to explore and redeem. Veil invites viewers into a realm where curiosity reigns supreme and fear of the unknown dissipates. Against a backdrop of deep blues and shimmering stars, a young girl boldly parts a veil, revealing a mysterious and enchanting sky beyond. The surrealistic elements, accentuated by subtle hints of purple undertones, evoke a sense of wonder and intrigue. Through this painting, I seek to celebrate the beauty of exploration and the courage it takes to embrace the mysteries that lie beyond the confines of our eve.

  • acrylic 11 x 10" In the hushed embrace of winter, where nature weaves a tapestry of solitude with its icy tendrils, my creations emerge as reflections of the quiet storm within. Winter, oft perceived as a season of retreat, becomes the crucible for a transformative dance between isolation and inspiration. As we seek refuge indoors from the tempestuous storms that sweep across the landscape, an introspective sanctuary unfurls, cultivating an environment where solitude metamorphoses into the catalyst for unrestrained creativity. This piece is an exploration of the delicate balance between the tranquility of seclusion and the tumultuous beauty of unleashed imagination. Each stroke, each contour, is a testament to the nuanced interplay between the serenity of winter's embrace and the tempestuous bursts of creativity that arise when the world slows down.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on canvas board 18 x 24" It started in 2013 as a mountain landscape, and it never felt exciting or finished until this year when I realized what image was hidden in it. I traveled in the Himalayas for the first time in 2008 and realized right away that any photos taken of them are just facades. The energy there was palpable, transformative; it was in everything and everyone, crystal, intense. Charged place. Trees, hills were engaged with each other and humans intensely. I am sure we all feel that when we are spending time in nature, but this intensity was very new. It was as if all colors became more vibrant, all emotions (especially bliss) became strong. Nothing ever returned to the feelings I had before the trip, which I know perceived as a bit muted experience. Meeting Gods changes you.

  • Educator Statement Teaching is a profound journey for me, a pathway through which I witness the emergence of talent in students as I impart knowledge and skills. It transcends mere skill-sharing; it's a collaborative exploration of creativity and self-discovery. I am thrilled and honored to be a guide, unveiling the distinctive essence of each student's soul that beautifully manifests in their creative expressions. I conducted the "Imaginary Playground" project at Hilltop Country Day School, a community of learners. Tiny books became a part of the mixed media piece right from the start because students wanted to express how important books are. "Inclusive Wonderland Imaginary Playground" became a canvas for discussing and visualizing a better future, fostering self-expression, and nurturing creative collaborations. Meaningful conversations unfolded, centering around the essence of what is important—such as the ability to express our best versions and the profound impact of love for learning. An innovative touch was added as students incorporated a mirror into the artwork's center, inviting viewers to feel included in the experience. Please watch a video where students articulate their collective vision for "Imaginary Playground," showcasing the diverse perspectives of grades K to 8 as they collaboratively crafted an "Inclusive Wonderland Playground." Further, I present individual visions from selected students captivated by this idea, offering unique insights. The 3D art piece titled "Four Seasons" by Colby Wood transports viewers to a magical realm, seamlessly transitioning through the changing seasons. It stands as a testament to creativity and imagination. Here is a link to the video of the piece. Thank you, NAWA, for this project and opportunity. • mixed media 24 x 18" "Unheard" is a striking painting that features two female figures without faces on a bold red background. The absence of faces immediately draws the viewer's attention, emphasizing the idea that women's voices are often ignored and their identities are not fully represented in society. The red background adds to the intensity of the piece, conveying the passion and frustration felt by many women who are not listened to. The title "Unheard" encapsulates the central message of the painting - that women's voices are often silenced or disregarded, particularly those who identify with more traditional feminine roles. In a time where new identities and pronouns are celebrated.

  • watercolor 24 x 28" Painting , for me, is an opportunity to retreat into my imagination and paint not just the subject, but my feelings about my "story. I call this imaginative process “painting with my mind’s eye”; as I work to cultivate artwork that tells the narrative of who I have painted. I dribble, splatter and toil with water-media to create an image that shares the spirit of my subject and her experiences. In recent years, I have been working with ideas inspired by the life of women’s experiences from past eras. In my “ghost story” series, my protagonist is experiencing the past, in terms of her memories, the present in the form of reading and writing her thoughts and the hopes for her future.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • Fluidity of Universal Time Poured watercolors, acrylics, UV varnish on canvas Size: 18 x 24" In recent years, the universe has been an intriguing source of inspiration. I have created a series of three unique versions of the universe: “Window on my universe” , “Doorways to alternate universes” and now my third painting of this series, which I call: “Fluidity of universal time.” In this painting I once again look to retreat into my imagination and examine time and our universe through the lens of my “mind’s eye” . For this painting I examine not only what I imagine the celestial world looks like but also the concept of time. With a little help from Salvador Dali, I conclude that our interpretation of time is relative to our uniquely different fluid views. The man and woman embrace, floating above a sea swept boat, emphasizing their fantastical experience. • Wish (The Escape) Alabaster Size of Piece: 30 x 15 x 6 This life size torso is a self portrait, created during a tumultuous time in my life. The cloth on the side rises up and the weave turns into forms that become birds, taking flight across the neck. The birds represent my yearning for freedom from a frightening, stifling relationship. I had to hide this stone as I was working on it, to prevent losing it. The day came when I was free, like the birds made from my own hands. This piece gives me a feeling of hope and joy because of the time shared together. It is uncanny how Wish holds natural light, glowing wherever it's placed. I now show it illuminated, to bring forth the true feeling of the piece. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

I work directly from nature exploring a synthesis of abstraction and realism, positive space activating negative space, the pictorial field alive. A new voice spoke to me over 25 years ago with my move from New York to Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It spoke a language I had never known, but spoke a secret language to my heart. The contemplation of the expressive figure gave way to the perception and experience of life in a glorious landscape. It said this is home.  Here we bear witness to the natural cycle of renewal and rest. Landscapes and waterscapes, houses and abodes provide places where we can rest and dream.

The ‘Endangered body of work’ was  begun fourteen years ago as it became evident that Mother Earth, the wildlife, and humanity are endangered from climate change, deforestation, overfishing, insecticides, pollution, poaching, and the effects of war. Mother Earth and Mother Nature are also often used metaphorically for women since many women find themselves in situations of endangerment globally. Tree of Knowledge I was painted with a burning tree because I feel deeply about all the women worldwide who are denied educations.

I have always been passionate about the beautiful palette of human diversity and nature, but also empathetic to the struggles of humanity and the vulnerability of all life forms. My decades long art career has been dedicated to making art about these passions. I observe and research for each painting. Something as small as a fruit fly, a beautiful human head, or a magnificent winter landscape seen from the train as I travel between my studios in Pittsburgh and NYC can inspire a large, multifaceted painting that combines human diversity, Mother Nature, and often the global struggles of women.

Acrylic, Italian metal leaf, imported paper
Size: 34 x 42" My lifelong passions have been the diversity of humanity and nature. My ‘Endangered body of work’ was begun fifteen years ago uniting the concepts of human diversity and the biodiversity of nature. I use Mother Earth and Mother Nature metaphorically for women since many find themselves in situations of endangerment globally. I try not to sensationalize because I want the viewer to reflect and internalize the art. Fifteen years ago there were 42,000 endangered species of wildlife and plant life, but now the number is over a million. With the Earth suffering from climate change, deforestation, overfishing, pollution, poaching, and war, we must remedy what we have created through global partnership. Within the work there is urgency but also an element of hope because we can all engage in the stewardship of nature and help others to appreciate the diversity of our own species. While she is primarily a ‘nude life model’, she is a warm and creative person.  When she sat down fully clothed in the crazy chair I have in my studio, she looked wonderful and the light was good, and the materials were new for me – cradled pine panel versus canvas, and a very limited palette – and viola, this little oil portrait was born.
