  • oil on canvas 20 x 30 x 1" Flowers and landscapes are my passion. Whether working in the garden or enjoying nature, I try to capture the fleeting moment, be it a flower in bloom, trees changing the color of their leaves during the fall, or shrubs with swelling buds during the spring. My camera is always ready in my hands. Millbrook in June, was created after I visited the area. One sunny day during summer, I went there on an excursion and was stunned by the beauty of that place. A man-made lake and the surrounding territory form a picturesque landscape on the outskirts of Millbrook, NY. • Archiped Sculpture: Stainless steel, copper Size of Piece: 7 x 3 x 11.5 Wendy Kaplan Friend is an innovative New York metal, stone and glass sculptor for more than 40 years.  Her creations have been exhibited in private collections in the US and internationally.  She is a life member at the Art Students League where she has studied for 13 years. In Wendy’s current body of work she fabricates her interpretation of metal shoes, hats and backpacks. Her welding process uses different heat treatments to produce metal reactions and visual effects. Wendy’s works include vibrant colored coatings, textures and different stainless steel patterns. Each metal element is hand-forged and welded together, creating soft textures out of an inherently rigid material. Wendy has explored mixed media sculpture through the incorporation of fused glass inserts into her metal shoe designs. Ms. Kaplan Friend merges the three dimensional glass with the forged metal. Ms. Kaplan Friend has taught graphic design and has worked as a consultant in fine arts museums in New York and Los Angeles. Ms. Kaplan Friend holds an MA in Museum Education from the Bank Street College of Education in New York and a certification in Multi Media Design from UCLA. • acrylic & colored pencil on wood 16 x 20 x 1.5" In my newest series, "Motion" I am exploring the concept of inertia and how that relates to ADHD. I’m sure most of you remember hearing the phrase “an object in motion stays in motion” from high school physics. I take it another step to say “a body in motion stays in motion. People with ADHD can have a difficult time transitioning between tasks. This can be mistaken for “laziness”. For example, if I’m sitting on the couch eating breakfast and know I have to get up to get ready to work, a lot of the time I just can’t. I know I need to, and I even WANT to get up. But my body remains seated. Or, I found in college that if I leaned on my forearms on my lofted bed, I’d get stuck doom-scrolling online for hours. Though my body may be still, my mind is still whirring. I have found that the only way to counteract this is to keep my body moving too—to move from task to task without physically pausing (unless I’m trying to take an intentional break). It’s a daily challenge that I’m sure a lot of people can relate to. My “Motion” series aims to reflect the duality of my mind moving while my body stays where it is and yearns to move forward. • watercolor 16 x 21 x 1" Color, light and shadow—created by the sun outside but observed primarily indoors in the kitchen—are magic. There is something about lighted round vibrant color fruits, such as oranges and tomatoes, combined with blues, usually found in ceramics and fabric, that, for me, represent a promise: of the pleasures of food, kitchens, meals, community, peace. Given the disturbing times in which we live, my paintings are a small pleasurable alternative. I deeply appreciate still life.

  • Painting Northern Song Dynasty Chinese Empresses 108 x 70 in. For the Fall 2024 New Member exhibit, I have selected a painting from my Chinese Empresses collection that features empresses from the Northern Song Dynasty. This piece is primarily painted in black and white, marking a creative shift for me and this collection. While I have always favored rich, vibrant colors in my work, my daughter, Fei Wu, encouraged me to explore a more minimal color palette to express my admiration and gratitude for these empresses. • acrylic / mixed media 30 x 24"
Mama’s Garden Was Blue is from the series ‘Into The Woods’, I believe green is a lucky color, most people love it. From spring to fall it presents us a galore of nuanced hues and values. And it takes its place right in the center of the rainbow. Blue, on the other hand, is the foundation of the world. It’s everywhere. It’s our air, our seas, it’s the one that embraces us, another words it’s like a mother. Here my entire interpretation is about a mother’s love. In such, while almost contradicting my own theory, the blues are in the flowers, whereas the green is placed at the mom’s skirt. Challenging myself and wondering what the reaction of the viewer will be. This always enriches me!

  • Those Were The Days Acrylic on Canvas Size of Piece: 20 x 20 As a visual artist and a dancer, I find many connections between abstract painting and improvisational dance. Just as I let the music move me from within, I allow my artistic intuition to bring my brush to life. I make art because I don’t know how to live without creating. The foundation of my art is connections. I aim to communicate the essence of a relationship or place with my visual language. In my art, ideas and expressions are more important than the materials. My goal is to transport the viewer to a place, person or moment in their life. I create abstract paintings with harmonious and brave colors. Using acrylic, mixed media, and collage material, I love exploring with unusual tools for surprising and delightful effects. My paintings go through three stages. I start by playing with colors and marks, following my intuition, allowing my technical knowledge only here and there. Then comes the 'ugly stage.' Nothing seems to be working, the colors and shapes struggle to be saved. It’s tempting to discard the work right here, but I always push through knowing the beauty I can create. This connection to my work brings me to the home stretch. I will never sign a piece until I’m completely connected with it. Once I am, you will be too. • oil 24 x 24" Since childhood I found myself mesmerized in painting the mysterious beauty and complexities of the natural world, later I saw the same qualities of vulnerability and power interwoven in the aesthetic of female forms and nature. Having been forever awestruck by the sanctity and power of water, I infuse fluid organic forms in my paintings to provoke a sense of fantasy, reminding people of brief moments when life felt like dreamy encounters.

  • The scenic window of Huangshan (6) Mixed Media Ink on Canvas Size: 15 x 12 I'm an artist based in Los Angeles and Hong Kong. While my work is best described as abstract, I primarily draw inspiration from the Earth's beautiful natural resources as well as its landscapes. My choice of tools often involves working with ink and acrylic as both mediums flow graciously and lusciously, helping me achieve my vision. Additionally, coming from a jewelry background, which requires a great deal of imagination and creativity, I've been able to transfer those skills to my work as an artist. I have found it easier to visualize my painting's setting, placement, color tones, and orientation before my paintbrush hits the canvas. After spending years designing jewelry pieces, I've found myself increasingly drawn to sparkle and sophistication. As such, when I paint, I look for bold colors to emit feelings of passion, freedom, and positive energy. To me, it's most important to focus on formal color relationships and visual composition. • Mixed Media Siren Song I 20 x 11 x 2 in. "Siren Song" is a mixed media painting that dives into the ocean's contrasting nature. The textural richness of the impasto technique reflects the power and movement of the ocean, while the abstraction evokes the mystery and allure that has captivated humanity for centuries. The painting hints at the ocean's violence and tranquility. The title, "Siren Song," reflects the ocean's seductive danger, luring viewers in with its beauty just as the mythical sirens did. The impasto technique itself, with its thick application of paint, draws the viewer in, inviting them to explore the textural depths of the artwork, much like the ocean beckons us to delve deeper. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Transformation Mixed Media Size of Piece: 10 x 10 Framed Size: 11.5 x 11.5 My work explores the intersection of abstract and figurative art, inviting viewers into a realm where emotions, memories, and human experiences converge. Abstract paintings form a core part of my practice. Through bold brushstrokes, gestural marks, and layered colors, I aim to capture the essence of emotions and translate the intangible onto canvas. These works encourage individual interpretation, allowing personal experiences to shape the meaning derived from each piece. Complementing my abstract explorations are figurative paintings. Here, I delve into the human form, capturing nuances of body language, gestures, and facial expressions. Depicting individuals in various emotional states, I strive to evoke empathy and spark contemplation about the complexities of human existence. The interplay of light, shadow, and color infuses the figures with depth and presence, fostering an intimate connection with the viewer. My exploration of the human form extends into figurative sculptures and installations. Working with tactile materials like clay, metal, and mixed media, I create three-dimensional representations that inhabit physical space. These works offer a more immersive experience, inviting viewers to explore the interplay between the artwork and its environment and to connect with the art and its narratives on a deeper level. Across all mediums, I strive to create a dialogue between viewer and artwork. I invite introspection and self-reflection, exploring the beauty and complexity of the human experience, and connecting with universal emotions. Ultimately, my art aims to inspire contemplation, evoke a range of emotions, and encourage a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. • Seashore Reverie Digital Photograph Size of Piece: 11 x 14 For this photograph I used Olympus camera. The Image left a deep impression of intensity of color value, lights and darks as a focal point reflected from the water's surface. I saw reds, blues and yellow color as primary and large areas are in orange and green as secondary colors.. There is some Value contrast of whites creating a sense of volumetric depth. I apply some gradation values which provide contours to detail forms of water surface with some increase of color intensity in order to bring the image to life.
