I'm A Goddess On Night Patrol Watercolor on Paper Size: 11 x 15 My inspiration comes mainly from my own experience, observations and understanding of human beings' existence in this world-- the struggle we go through to survive (get by), thrive and become happy and content. I like to study history and philosophy to learn about human nature. My artwork tends to capture various human feelings and emotions, and our persistent yearning for freedom, justice and truth. Occasionally, I create artworks that seems to show off-on-a-tangent imagination or whimsical humor, but they are also my reflections on our being in this world. I often use strong colors and mixed media, but for small works, I enjoy working with a single medium for each piece. For larger artworks, I frequently feature reflective materials in the mixed media, especially color foil. Color foil tape/paper generates brilliant flowing changing colors as a person moves in the space to view the artworks from different angles, informing the viewer that “change is norm”- we should learn when and how to let go of bad feelings. It also reminds the audience that truth can be multi-faceted: all we can see is just a part of it, so we should fare in this world with humility and tolerance. Let It Sing! Watercolor on Watercolor hot press paper Size: 10 x 13 The painting Let It Sing! was inspired by a moment I captured during a winter trip to New York, specifically in Central Park's Bethesda Terrace Arcade. The subject of the piece is a young woman busking with her guitar, and her face is filled with an expression of deep passion as she sings. The title, Let It Sing!, is drawn from the song "Let It Sing" in the Broadway musical Violet. In the show, a disfigured girl embarks on a journey of healing through faith and music. She meets a man who encourages her to embrace her voice, telling her, "You've got to give yourself a reason to rejoice / Cause the music you make counts for everything / Now every living soul has got a voice / You've got to give it room / And let it sing." The painting itself reflects that same message—the power of music to heal, express, and make one's voice heard. As I worked on the piece, I was drawn to the vibrant energy of the woman and the striking textures of the environment around her. The weathered stone wall behind her, with its intricate trompe l'oeil panels, echoed the colors of her shirt, creating a harmonious blend of background and subject. This "harmony" and her passionate expression captivated me and sparked my creative process. Within #3 Mixed Media Collage Size: 10 x 8 Framed Size: 14 x 12 I create abstract three-dimensional collage by transforming flat images and shapes into raised architectural forms that add depth, texture and shadows. Using paper in rich tones, I cut, score and fold to build these forms, then combine them with other materials, like photographs, wood, fabric, metal, plastic, and wire mesh. The juxtaposition of these elements -- casting shadows and highlighting contact points – enhances the intention of each piece. I find inspiration from African sculpture; the Constructivism, Geometric Abstraction, and Cubism art movements; the work of Louise Nevelson; the ‘illogical perspective’ of Giorgio de Chirico and M.C. Escher; Joseph Cornell’s shadow boxes; and Frank Stella’s metal reliefs, among many others. My work lands somewhere between the real and the imagined. Each piece features doorways, walkways and passages, leading the viewer to spaces of mystery, questions and the unknown. These pieces serve as visual metaphors for issues that impact me, from environmental concerns and global conflicts to the search for inner peace. As viewers consider this ‘almost-but-not-quite-real’ world, I invite them to ask questions, like: What is it? Where is it? What do I see and feel? And ultimately, do I find myself in it, or not? Cut and Paste Encaustic Size: 12 x 12 I have used the chair as my motif of choice in most of my work, drawing on its use as a metaphor for the human being and human nature. The artwork "Cut And Paste" was created as I was thinking about how the chair travels; that no matter where we find ourselves, no matter the environment the chair will always be be there, marking our place. "Prototype" is heavily layered, scraped and collaged as I explored the basic shape and ubiquitous quality of the chair throughout the history of mankind. "The First Glow" was inspired by a pile of letters I found between a couple who wrote to each other and the letters revealed the development of the relationship and this piece is about how they both began to edge more towards love and "the first glow" or blossoming of new love... Sweeping the Church Steps Digital Photograph Size: 15 x 10 I enjoy photographing people on the street. Most of my current work is in the NYC area. I look for good locations and wait to find interesting people. What inspires me is how unpredictable people are and how spontaneous the process is. I look for places with interesting forms, color, light, and street geometry. Interactions between people can make for a strong photograph. Also, I never know how people will react to being photographed by me. I've had various reactions from people who pose and wave, to people who cover their faces. What has kept me going over the years was the excitement of being on the street and finding unpredictable encounters. Frolic 2 Mixed Media Size: 6 x 6 Framed Size: 12 x 12 This group of woven mixed media works employs photography as a base to evoke the passage of time and obfuscation of memories through the use of weaving techniques. In order to do this, I must first deconstruct the photograph by cutting it into thin strips to create a new work. Weaving creates patterns on the surface and below the surface. I use pattern to evoke memory and I want the viewer to connect with their own personal histories and intuition. The subjects that I work with come from a personal collection of photographs of family, anonymous subjects and images of famous artists and writers. All are chosen based on either my connection with the subject on a personal level or from having an emotional response to the photograph. Often the vintage-looking subjects and the intricacy of weaving create a very tactile effect that both abstracts and restores attributes of the original image while referencing the idea of “women’s work," a subject that is close to home. The driving force behind my work is my interest in finding and amplifying the beauty and mystery that exists quietly all around us, both obvious and hidden. I am always seeking ways that the humblest scenes reveal profound insights and offer wordless understanding. Known for working in pastels for nearly 30 years, my imagery often uses a close focus on water, rocks, and foliage. The inclusion of reflections and shadows, often without a horizon for reference, allows a range of interpretations and encourages the viewer to move beyond the literal with me. While my imagery remains grounded in the natural world, I alter or emphasize at will. Even when including human constructions I focus on the abstract and curious elements. Monument Stelae Mixed Media Size: 13.8 x 10.6 I use Josonja matte flow gouache paints. I like the matte intensity of the colors. All three works are without planning. The pieces are one of a kind experiments with color, cut and painted papers/ canvas on different surfaces. I used cardboard for The Order, Fabriano watercolor paper for the Monument Stelae, and for the Figure Study I started with the orange painted paper glued to cardboard then the figure ( painted on paper) was glued onto that surface. The image of a civilian woman holding her daughter, pleading with the aggressor, is a universal story of love, fear, and resilience. My inspiration comes from stories of those caught in war zones—the civilians who do not choose violence but must endure its consequences. The mother in this painting represents countless women who, despite their terror, stand firm in their instinct to protect. In my creative process, I use heavy, dark colors in the background to symbolize destruction and turmoil. At the same time, the softer, more delicate details of the mother and child convey their fragility. The palette contrast represents the merging of fear, hope, and desperation. This piece depicts suffering and reflects humanity itself. It asks the viewer to step into this moment and question the forces that create such tragedies. The Delight Project: No. 5 Oil on Canvas Size of Piece: 20 x 16 My name is Anne Pollard James and I paint the spectacular strength of women. My current project, 'The Delight Project' examines many of the notions of the concept of how we 'brave the body’. As women, we are always asked to cover up and camouflage our natural bodies. In fact, based on what we see on a screen, you would never know that skin has scars, pores and complex texture. That the body is as pragmatic as it is mysterious. The very things that make us strong and capable are the things that our cameras filter out. Like, the muscles and the fascia that mold fat into cellulite and keep our legs strong to carry us on our way. And how our faces line and fall with gravity and then peak to glorious smiles that light up everything. And how our bellies rise and fall, and are streaked with the pale-blue-peach hued marks that stretch to hold us. For this project, I offered an open invitation to participate in this series. And then, I simply met women where they are and captured small moments of joy and delight of self, to include in a series of painted images based on a photo that we worked together to create. For me, the challenge is to touch the timeless themes iterated in visual art, literature, drama and music throughout recorded history, while staying relevant and responsive to one’s own cultural place in the timeline. Since childhood to the present day, I have been a painter and visual artist. My images are primarily painted directly from life, with the subject typically casting a gaze back at the viewer. My paintings respond to themes “humanity”- my fellow women, forced migration, social justice, civil rights, natural and man-made calamities, as well as the respite of nature’s continuum. My process comes from my desire to bypass self-conscious inhibitions in the pursuit of self-expression. In 1990, I felt artistically "reborn" when I started painting with my non-dominant left hand and discovered renewed creative freedom. This, as well as using oversized brushes, gives me speed and fluidity, resulting in either as a fully representational finished painting, or the base on which to build a mixed media collage. Utilizing physical collage materials such as torn maps, shards of color, images from printed media, and my own repurposed drawing fragments as my palette, the works become emblematic statements of the over-stimulation and media bombardment of contemporary society, in concert with the directly observed presentation of a human subject. COVID Selfie Soft Pastel on Paper Size of Piece: 18.5 x 12.5 Framed Size: 23.25 x 17.5 In all of my entries, a moment in time is 'archived'...Although watercolor is my primary-medium, I work proficiently in soft- pastel as well, for the two-selfies, which are very direct and bold in technique. The same bold-brushwork and directness in mark-making is in the watercolor, which is interpreted from one of my 1998 photographs of my immigrant-Italian grandmother in her late 70's, (very bold in the markings in her hair) and my adopted Thai daughter, then, age four. A Fragmented Life Sculpture: Glazed and Fire Stoneware Size of Piece: 8 x 7 x 8 A Fragmented Life evolved from a workshop dealing with the idea of house. A house protects and a house can conceal. The figure is broken but not falling apart. She is trying to gain sustenance from the broken elements below her. The various pieces are glazed, fired stoneware. The McCarthy plaque shows my great grandparents, Dennis and Mary McCarthy, after they emigrated from Ireland to upstate New York, leaving behind the Great Famine. They were married in 1874, and had 7 children including my grandmother Julia Guinane. The relief was modeled in clay and a plaster was made from that and colored with a bronze paint.
