A country, locality, or situation in which cultural assimilation results in blending the heritage and traditions of previously distinct ethnic groups. Yes, America has been labeled a melting pot of society, we encompass all colors, religions, nationalities to become a cohesive society, but our history also speaks of something else. A time when not all people who came to this country were treated the same, when people were spit upon, enslaved, and treated as second class citizens. We have spent the past few hundred years trying to rectify that mistake. We falter, some never learn, and when you put people with so many different ideas, beliefs together there beg to be differences. Will we ever.

8 x 7 x 6" Maidy Morhous expresses herself through the medium of bronze which allows her to portray the extremes of the soft flow of water to the harsh asphalt pavement of our world. The artwork encompasses the pop theme of presenting commonplace objects as fine art. It is meant to engage the viewer and allow them to contemplate and pull from within, and for a moment disengage from the outside world. Referred to as contemporary still life sculptures Morhous continually searches to portray her environment in the world today. These sculptures expose the view to and pull them in to react and question what is being viewed – be it life and one’s existence, the world’s plight or just to bring a smile. Idiomatic titles prompt metaphorical interpretations to these works with hints at multilayered meanings.

  • oil on canvas 20 x 24" The view across the field or down to the water while spending time in Maine draws me into the feeling of nature surrounding me. Seasonally I find the changes of the drama always changing but I have to find different ways of painting or drawing it. The shadows of winter or so different. The trees create amazing patterns in the snow that bring me back to my textile days. I try to create it like an impressionistic design. • oil on gallery wrapped canvas 20 x 20" I am quite taken by trees in nature. I live in Maine for most of the seasons and am always finding new excitement in paintingmy surroundings. Birch trees are my laborite because they have fascinating patterns in the bark and branches. My career as a textile designer has influenced how I see the patterns. My other strength is color. I am experimenting in values rather than chroma and find it has made my art more exciting. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Photography 10.25 x 6.75 I have taken only one trip to Cuba, but I was immediately captivated by the diversity of the landscape, the light, and the interplay of colors, but especially by the soul of the people: their openness, their friendliness, their energy, their joy, and their vibrant street life. As a photographer whose primary interest has always been people, I was in the midst of a visual paradise.

  • oil 12 x 12" Mareshet is a Surrealist painter originally from Philadelphia. Her inspiration for capturing the details of distinctive brick walls, storefronts, and graffiti in Philadelphia neighborhoods comes from her desire to reconnect to her city roots. Her artworks in oil are technical and less imaginary compared to her works in acyclic, also known as her passion pieces. They consist of dream-like scenes that evoke narrative renderings of new perspectives found after heartache. Both mediums and styles play a significant role in telling a complex or straightforward story. Mareshet focuses on capturing the presence of nature, its changing seasons, inorganic elements, such as metal structures, and its stillness in connection with mankind's curiosity. She has studied using other mediums such as alkyd, mixed media, and charcoal and currently uses the direct painting method and Grisaille technique to complete her works.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • Acrylic on Illustration Board Period Room Size: 10.5 x 8.5 Framed Size: 13 x 11 While most of my paintings are of exteriors: street scenes, building facades and the like. I have recently expanded my repertoire to include interiors. Perhaps because of traditional gender roles, interiors always seem to lend themselves more readily to a feminine perspective than other subject matter. That holds for the dioramic recreation of an eighteenth-century Bordeaux hotel room with its curved walls, delicate molding, ornate chandelier, statuary, and drapery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is an intimate and romantic setting just waiting for two figures to appear. Alas one cannot enter; the doorway is cordoned off. However, the stagecraft that went into it can still be admired up close. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

16 x 20 x 1" I am primarily a cityscape painter, and it is the urban landscape of New York that inspires me the most.  Although, my cityscapes reflect my particular experiences of places, I try to convey something beyond the personal that will resonate with others, whether it be taking a walk in Brooklyn or taking in a spectacular view in Manhattan.

  • acrylic on canvas 15 x 19 x 2"
I lived in Philadelphia only briefly decades ago, but in recent years I have had more than a few occasions to visit, thanks to the generosity of a local friend. I have taken advantage of those visits to sketch, paint and photograph various sites around the city. My paintings of South 9nth Street, the Italian Market's main drag, are my most successful efforts to date to capture the essence of one of Philadelphia's neighborhoods. I like the area's historic status and distinct character: It looks impervious to the development that is so prevalent in much of the city these days. Although, there are indications that this neighborhood too will give way to new construction.

  • acrylic on canvas 19 x 25 x 1" The urban landscape of New York is my primary subject matter. I have always been fascinated by how socio-economic forces have transformed neighborhoods over the decades, but I try to capture a sense of permanence amidst the flux. The Limelight is a Chelsea landmark, and as such it is a symbol of permanence, but it also encapsulates the ever-changing demographics of the city: In the mid-nineteenth century, the building was an Episcopalian church; in the 1960's, it was deconsecrated and transformed into a rehab facility; then in the eighties, it was turned into a nightclub. More recently, the building has housed a mall and a gym.

  • Colored pencil 11 x 14 in. I have always been fascinated with texture. What a pleasurable challenge to create impressions of the different types of leather: rough, smooth and in-between… all while playing with light! The small bag was made by a good friend; the tiny strap-pouch and leather jerkin were made by my husband. Both men were superb craftsmen, and I wanted to replicate their fine work in this piece. It’s a way of showing just what is possible with pencil.

  • sculpture 17.25 x 12 x 7.5"
I sometimes consider human constructed space and the natural world in my art. In our daily routines we often peer out of one space to glimpse the other. Here, I investigate the "nature deficit" caused by our highly managed world and its cure. The natural world encourages us to explore and dream; to re-engage with the essence of life and beauty, bringing about peace. All materials in this artwork come from nature, but nothing is in its naturally found form. The prefabricated metal structure points to industrial constructs, protrudes into the viewer’s space, and surrounds the implied interior space of the paintings which asks the viewer to step inside.

    32 x 22"
I made this piece by standing in front of the canvas and tracing my body leaving out the head and limbs. This puts the focus on the torso and the reproductive organs making the identity the woman and her situation unknown. There is so much controversy about this part of a woman's body without giving consideration to who this individual is and what are her circumstances. Her body is beautiful and powerful and ultimately her own.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

A friend gave us a beautiful bouquet of flowers and I wanted to keep it forever so I made a collage of it. I rearranged these familiar items in a playful way.

  • oil 30 x 30 x 2" My paintings speak of the accumulation of life experiences. The multi-faceted nature of that which is beautiful but sad, is evidenced by heavily textured surfaces with repeated scrapings, layers and metallic pigments. The surfaces draw the viewer to the mystery of what is hidden and to the artist's internal reflections. Radiant pigments counterbalance the rough textural terrain of the emotional landscape. They afford glimpses of lightness, mystery and joy.

  • etching - drypoint, aquatint, engraving with Gampi chine collé 15 x 17 x 1"
Crab Nebula is a copper plate etching that transformed itself with the addition of dry point, engraving, and then embellishment with two different roulettes, one a wheel, and one an aquatint rocker. Cut-outs of colored gampi paper were added with the chine collé process to lend excitement and depth. The image was inspired by photographs from NASA’s amazing James Webb Telescope. I am intrigued by questions of the origins of life. Did it arrive from space on a meteor? That the Crab Nebula looks much like cell division during the development of the human embryo is fascinating.

  • photogravure etching 11 x 12" I am a visual artist working in the San Francisco Bay Area, and show my work locally and nationally. My artwork explores themes of nature in the form of animals, lands, skies and waters, always looking for the spirit within. It was Christmas Eve on the beach at Isle of Palms, SC, during the polar vortex, 19 degrees out. Everything was frozen, the sand and dunes, the water puddles, and even the wildlife. Nonetheless, we walked aside the surf, bundled in our puffy jackets and knit hats, scarves and gloves, and soaked in the ambiance, the salt water air, the sound of the waves, the hardness of the cold sand, observing the few birds that were flying around us or skittering on the beach. Upon encountering this very cold little crab, I felt so bad for it, and when I reached out to touch it, it moved. Ah, he is alive! I thought as I put him back into the waves, “there is hope”. This piece is a photogravure etching, the image made on photopolymer solar plates. It is fitting that both sun and water are involved in the process of making the plates, and contributed to the translation of the image. • etching with chine collé 19 x 24 x 1" I am always excited to explore and conquer new printmaking techniques. In this case, the copper plate is inked, and Chine collé circles were cut out of gampi, kitakata papers, and suminagashi prints, which I made, and were glued on. Then a plum gampi backed it all. Creating and executing the process itself puts me into the zone, a meditative state, and stops time for me. My themes are the search for and expression of the spirit within, be it animals, landscapes, or spacescapes. I use color, contrast and composition to captivate and create an emotional response for the viewer.

  • oil on panel 12 x 16" 2023   My work has been described as Contemporary Impressionism and is inspired by the beauty I see around me everyday. Sometimes the idea for a painting spontaneously presents itself as in plein air painting. I am inspired by the quiet meandering of a river, the vastness of a desert gorge, or the way afternoon sun lights the curve of an arch. Sometimes my paintings are inspired by many impressions and feelings of a place. I use technique to express relationships and create a sense of atmosphere, time and space.. • Oil 10 x 10 in. Autumn Lilies was painted during the Steamboat Art Museum Plein Air in the Yampa River Botanical Gardens in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on a chilly September morning. I had just completed a large 18” x 24” plein air painting of the lily pond and had lots of paint still on my palette. 3 hours spent analyzing the scene had burned the image of the lilies into my visual memory and I used a palette knife and the remains of the paint to express the brilliance of the aspen reflecting in the water and the gestural angles and colors of the lilies.

  • Oil on Panel 12 x 24"
Romantic Evening at Pebble Beach was painted "en plein air" on a deck overlooking the ocean, bluffs and cypress trees with Point Lobos in the distance. This is one of my favorite spots to paint. It offers something new every time depending on the time of day, the season, the clear or cloudy sky, the color of the sea, or the height of the waves. This rendition was done for the Carmel Art Festival on an evening in May. I started at about 5pm, working quickly to capture the light of the setting sun on the water.

Springtime Seas was painted "en plein air" on the sand in Pacifica, California.  The waves were high and the sea was reflecting the bluster of the clouds and wind of the brisk, Spring Day. It was fun to watch the waves rush in and crash, leaving tendrils of foam and wet sand on the shore. Gazing out to the horizon where the sea meets the sky, purples and pinks touched the clouds, shadows lengthened and the sun kissed the edges of the trees and the tops of the waves.

  • But He Died Collage and acrylic on panel Size of Piece: 24 x 24 x 1.5 Inspired by the beautiful rolling foothills in Umbria, Italy, this piece captures the energy and heat of summer in this area. My work comes in bursts of spontaneity—bold, colorful, and full of energy—yet created in a state of complete calm. I'm delighted when the unexpected emerges. Those surprises excite me and guide the pieces to their final forms. I’m inspired by both the wild freedom of the abstract expressionists and the sharp clarity of the precisionists, always searching for a balance between the two. Every piece is an adventure, a conversation between instinct and intention, a process that is intuitive, driven by curiosity, and open to the unexpected. • We Never Surrender Acrylic, collage, thread on panel Size of Piece: 24 x 24 Framed Size: 25 x 25 These portraits are the strong women in my life who walked before and beside me for a lifetime. I was inspired by a host of old photographs on in crumbling black photo albums that have survived 100 years. Once Upon an Art is the big sister I never had, my cousin, the reason I am an artist (too). In collage, I’ve highlighted only snips of her incredible command of language as poetry. With minimal words and intense curiosity about the world around her, she crafts short stories that belie typical speech, giving us glimpses of her genius. She divines an emotional story of our aging grandmother perhaps saying: “I forget how to use the words. I watch conversations and great-grandchildren grow in my very hands. I hide things and forget them, and therefore it gets easier. I fall asleep during the news, and so it gets easier.” We Never Surrender and But He Died both honor the legacy of our grandma. Widowed less than six months after the birth of her 5th child, she survived two World Wars, rations, The Great Depression, 50 years day after day in a sweatshop sewing men's shoes so her children could eat. Her story lives on in how I meet life, productive, stalwart, I can do it - and that has passed to my daughters, and her grandchildren and now mine. We have her story now, and traditions, making our daily bread and getting it all done to meet another day. • What Does She Know? Mixed Media Acrylic on Collage Paper Size: 10 x 8 Framed Size: 14 x 11 In bursts of spontaneity, my initial images are often be inspired by nature or figures. I love it when suddenly I “see” something suggested within the seemingly random marks. They surprise and delight me. My style is rhythmic, colorful and energetic. I am simultaneously inspired by the abstract expressionists and the precisionists – striving for balance in many ways with clean lines and quiet conversations. Painting is a Zen experience for me. Despite procrastinating on the front end, once I get started, I am energized by and lost in the process. I engage in a great deal of self-talk in color mixing and selection, mark making, and always, always tweaking. My nemesis is keeping my hands off a piece I’ve already deemed complete! Often the meaning behind the content emerges after it's done and subjected to contemplation. My titles strive to give a hint of what the piece represents for me yet leaves the viewer to wonder as well. • Ink and Collage on Panel
    9 x 9"
My art is a celebration of spontaneity and the beauty that emerges from controlled chaos. Using collage with a limited color palette, I layer and then intentionally disrupt, often scrubbing under running water to reveal the unexpected. This process of destruction and revelation brings about surprises that I cherish. I then enhance these emergent images with a pop of color or drama to capture moments of vibrant contrast and harmony. Each piece evolves organically, blending intention with the unpredictable to create compositions that reflect the dynamic energy of creation itself. Through this exploration, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in the layers of my artistic journey.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
