Painting Northern Song Dynasty Chinese Empresses 108 x 70 in. For the Fall 2024 New Member exhibit, I have selected a painting from my Chinese Empresses collection that features empresses from the Northern Song Dynasty. This piece is primarily painted in black and white, marking a creative shift for me and this collection. While I have always favored rich, vibrant colors in my work, my daughter, Fei Wu, encouraged me to explore a more minimal color palette to express my admiration and gratitude for these empresses. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Painting Ambiguous Unseen 12 x 12 x 1.5 in. My recent paintings address buoyancy, levity, themes of duality and continuity, energy, fragility, microcosm versus macrocosm, and more. Indicative, expressive and meaningful qualities develop through the instinctive arrangement of colors and geometric elements. I am inspired by ideas from Suprematism, Constructivism, Dada, Synthetic Cubism, Conceptualism, Emblematic Surrealism, and American quilts. All thematic and visual exploration I do includes significant attention to color. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

oil on canvas 40 x 30 x 1" In my painting I wanted to express my first impression of Manhattan. It was too big to comprehend. acrylic & collage on sintra panel 48 x 60 x .25" My images are primarily painted directly from life, with the subject typically casting a gaze back at the viewer. My paintings respond to themes “humanity”- my fellow women, forced migration, social justice, civil rights, natural and man-made calamities, as well as the respite of nature’s continuum. My process comes from my desire to bypass self-conscious inhibitions in the pursuit of self-expression. In 1990, I felt artistically "reborn" when I started painting with my non-dominant left hand and discovered renewed creative freedom. This, as well as using oversized brushes, gives me speed and fluidity, resulting in either as a fully representational finished painting, or the base on which to build a mixed media collage. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Painting Healthy Skeptic 18 x 18 x 1 in. When I start a new portrait, I work to establish a faithful depiction of my subject first, through careful sketching and underpainting, paying close attention to the underlying bone structure, musculature and proportion. Then, with my choices of color, texture, brushwork, and some intuition, I try to go beyond, to capture a sense of the subject’s inner self as well. A finished painting conveys a likeness, but hopefully also a presence; when you look at it, you might feel it is looking back at you. oil on linen 38 x 28 x 1.5" My paintings deal with the luminosity of light. They are inspired by a need and my choice to embrace brightness and positivity in the darkness that seems to hover over the entire world like an enormous dark cloud. I use organic shapes that are derived from nature with the intention to lift the spirits of the viewer. acrylic on wood 72" round Beautiful repetitive patterns in nature have been always an inspiration for my art works. You can see flow of life in all different patterns. In my paintings I try to capture these beauties and try to imitate them by the flow of fluid acrylic. My aim is always is to bring calmness and peace to the viewer’s eyes and spirit. Painting 32 x 25 in. Usually, one idea follows another. I have several themes that I go between, but I find, each seems to dovetail into the other to eventually build a cohesive collection. This is not planned, and I speak retrospectively. Also, the palette seems to be consistent. Maybe this is true as a result of years of work. Nonetheless, there seems to be so much more to do and so many ideas not yet realized. I suppose it's never ending. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Painting The Forest Glows at Night 42 x 42 in. I live on the shoreline in eastern Connecticut where there is a bounty of inspiration. I began years ago as a landscape painter. Over time I transitioned into abstraction. I still consider myself a landscape painter but focusing more the abstract components of nature. My work explores patterns using aerial views of landscapes, i.e. coastlines, marshes, forests and rivers. I use symmetrical, asymmetrical, and organic shapes that I see around me. I am influenced by indigenous peoples, Japanese wood block prints and the work of Gustav Klimt. I don't sketch my ideas first but paint directly onto the canvas and create as I go along, Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Ink, pastel, and color pencil on paper 40 x 22.5 in. Ever since antiquity, astronomers have studied the 13 phases of Venus, from her rise as the morning star, to her descent into invisibility, and her re-emergence in the evening sky. These phases occur over a 19-month cycle, marking both a physical and a spiritual passage. I expressed each phase in a different work. The journey begins with Inception, passing through Gestation, Birth, Emergence towards Fullness and Self-Discovery. Then Immersion and Transmutation are followed by Rebirth, Remembering, Wholeness, Completion. My inspiration was a found ledger of observations of the 1874 Transit of Venus, a phenomenon occurring every 243 years when the planet moves across the face of the sun. Painting Madame Issac Pereire 14 x 11 x .001 in. Moving on in life I became steadily aware of the fact that my relationship with dreams and aspirations had become disconnected, survival became the guiding star. Stepping back and embracing larger constellations, realizing that all lives have an end date, it was time to make the most of what time I do have left, which is to nurture my original impulses and challenges while at the same time creating meaningful connections between how I feel and ways to express it. Mixed Media Trichaptum Fungi (Trichaptum abietinum) 40 x 30 in. My work reflects my close observation of nature. I attempt to capture its endless fluctuations: shifting light, variegated colors, constant movement, evolving forms, evidence of resident fauna. Working abstractly, yet botanically accurately, I surprise viewers with unusual views revealing the complex design inherent in often unnoticed life. By sharing the beauty of humble local ecosystems, I hope to induce viewers to look deeply. I am exquisitely aware that, though nature is our collective home, human activity has caused irreparable losses of habitat, resource, and species. My work, thus, aims to respond to ecologists’ call for native ecosystem rediscovery and restoration. Painting Tidal 40 x 40 in. The artwork *Tidal* draws its inspiration from the natural beauty of New England's seacoast, particularly the captivating interplay of land, water, and sky. As a colorist, I interpret this environment through bold, expressive use of color, conveying not just what I see, but the emotional resonance these landscapes evoke. The fluidity of the acrylic, oil pastel, and watercolor on unprimed canvas allows for spontaneous movement and layering, capturing the ebb and flow of tidal rhythms. This piece blends abstraction with the organic forms of the seacoast, reflecting my deep connection to the region and its ever-changing nature. Works on Paper 36 x 36 in. This piece, Windblown, is part of a series called Transitions. When I started this series I was touched by the lament of “women of a certain age”, feeling that they were invisible, overlooked, and insignificant. This series is my attempt to visually capture this time in a woman’s life as an ending as well as a new beginning as the sunflower emits its seeds and begins again. The subject of this work is an aged, dried sunflower. I used Chinese ink to explore the transient nature of life and the strength of that transience. acrylic, oil, ink, & canvas collage on linen 36 x 24 x 1.5" My painting series is a profound dialogue between our planet’s crisis and my creative expression. I often ask myself what message I can give the viewer through my art. We are living in perilous times with climate change affects accelerating. As an artist I am constantly looking at the beauty of the land and oceans and inspired to create my perception in an abstract and organic way. When one sees my art, I want to convey not just a painting but a story of our planet. I look at the elements of the earth, the balance of nature, and a bird’s eye view of the stunning contrast of land that we don’t always see. While our planet is vast and different it is all one in how we can preserve it for future generations. I see inspiration in the elements of Earth and beyond in its organic and abstract nature. Many of the materials used in painting are derived from elements of the earth and I use these elements to build something abstract and yet symbolic of what our planet is made of. oil on panel 26 x 20 x 2" The spark of inspiration for this body of work came from a stay in New York City, specifically in the Chelsea neighborhood. In the painting Chelsea’s Story, the vibrating, sunlit colors on the church spires were absolutely irresistible and something I had to paint in contrast to the rest of the building in shadow. I find this an exciting approach in my work, paying respect to artists I admire who have come before such as Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler and countless masters. Painting She, Bright as Yellow 16 x 16 x 2 in. 'She, Bright as Yellow' moved me to paint. From corsets, panty hose, Skims and Spanx we are so often asked to constrict, to make smaller. Working from my series of underwater works titled ‘Coming Up For Air”, the painting included in this submission reflect on the notion of breath; fighting for and finding the space to breathe in. My work is a joyful reclamation. Through provocation, humor, and strength, I examine equality and personal truths through a contemporary figurative lens. I explore the complex ways we all navigate in the spaces that surround us, and how I hope my work emboldens women to take up space. Monotype 36 x 24.74 x .75 in. The forest, for me, is more than just a place. It's a sanctuary, a source of inspiration, and a canvas for my art. It's where I slow down and appreciate the gifts of nature, experience serenity, and seek healing. This deep connection to nature is the driving force behind my work. It reflects life's journeys as an artist, a mother, and my role as a human in the natural world. My art vibrates with this, communicating with mark=making rooted in impressionism and abstractionism, forming a symbiotic relationship with the past and present with the joy of raising children and sadness of leaving the nest. The works are a dance of light and hope that I found in change and share with the viewer. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Painting Above the Skyline 60 x 48 x 1.5 in. My paintings are very textural. The smoothness, roughness and softness of the paint on the canvas reveal the feelings of calm, energy and resiliency. My paintings hold hundreds of lines, angles and shapes. Texture is created with the palette knife and is either quickly or slowly pushed across the surface. Paint applied in a slow billowy swirl or hard structural edges depict life’s ups and downs. My work shows a love of design and representational art. The past has come and gone and the future is something to dream away this moment to be revealed in my art. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Oil on canvas 21 x 25 in. LOOK OUTSIDE The model for this painting is my beautiful granddaughter Jamie, with gorgeous naturally curly saffron colored hair. She is only 8 years old here, but she is tall, making her look older. She is unaware of her natural youthful beauty. I love the lopsided bow on the back of her shirt. Seeing the work in progress, Jamie asked me to put an owl in the painting. I painted a barn owl in flight. The owl, like her wisdom, is coming towards her, but in her innocence, she looks the other way. Pensive (Jesse)This lovely young woman sits at the sweet threshold of adulthood. Her skin is soft and rosy. She's surrounded by hearth and home. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Oil on canvas 24 x 24 x 1.5 in. When my mother passed away I found I couldn't continue painting as usual and painted only her death for six months, always in an expressionist manner. At first the works were colorful, even cheery; next a beautiful waterfall of tears; and finally, my entry "Mourning Aiti," a somber, and as it happens, feminine, design. acrylic on canvas 33 x 33 x 2" These paintings are part of a series I am now working on called Organic Abstractions. Originally, they were produced as very small (6"x6"), intricate, very detailed collage and mixed media pieces. I decided use them as blueprints to rework them into much larger paintings. As always color takes center stage. It is the driving force behind all of my work.. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Mixed Media Siren Song I 20 x 11 x 2 in. "Siren Song" is a mixed media painting that dives into the ocean's contrasting nature. The textural richness of the impasto technique reflects the power and movement of the ocean, while the abstraction evokes the mystery and allure that has captivated humanity for centuries. The painting hints at the ocean's violence and tranquility. The title, "Siren Song," reflects the ocean's seductive danger, luring viewers in with its beauty just as the mythical sirens did. The impasto technique itself, with its thick application of paint, draws the viewer in, inviting them to explore the textural depths of the artwork, much like the ocean beckons us to delve deeper. Acrylic on canvas 20 x 20 in. When I was a young girl, my dad taught me to swim. He'd let me hold onto him as he swam deep underwater....and I loved that feeling of gliding through the water, holding onto him. I never could last as long as he could underwater, and I'd have to let go and swim madly up for air. Those are some of my favorite memories with him...swimming. When he died, I dreamed we were swimming together again, only this time I was the one swimming deep underwater and he was the one swimming madly to the surface...and this time he went far further than the surface.; he went straight on into the sky. I woke up missing him, but happy we could swim together again...even if it is in my dreams. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Works on Paper 24 x 18 in. Since the pandemic, I have been incorporating masks and braille in monotypes to explore how we hide or reveal ourselves. This series, “Who Sees?”, explores the use of veils, masks, head coverings, face coverings in different cultures. How do we perceive women when they are veiled or masked? Are they disempowered or empowered? Do the masks/veils offer freedom or protection or bondage? The images that I create are multilayered, pushing us to delve deeper into this subject. “Who Sees” simultaneously draws you in and pushes you away. watercolor & mixed media on paper 30 x 23" I am an abstract painter, and I work primarily in watercolors with mixed media elements on paper. I’m inspired by the interplay of colors, shapes, and uneven lines, and I love the fluid, unpredictable nature of watercolor paints. I work very intuitively: I always have a starting point - a particular color combination or focal point - but then I just go wherever inspiration leads me, often surprising myself! My work is very influenced by nature, and I find myself particularly drawn to loose rounded shapes, which have become a recurring motif in much of my work. I often include botanical elements in my artwork, most of which have deep personal significance for me - reminding me of cherished people and places in my life. Painting brings me peace, balance, and joy, and it helps me maintain an even keel in our uncertain times. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Painting Still Life with a Chocolate Bar 16 x 20 x 1 in. My goal for some years now have been to work with only two or three colors and their variations in a painting in order to achieve the full sound of these colors. This is a relatively new task for me, it’s captivating to work on it. In Still Life with a Chocolate Bar the contrast main colors : black, silver, orange - red , the combination of empty shiny silvery and black vessels on an orange and brick - red background are supposed to evoke certain associations and mood. Mixed Media Painting 20 x 20 x 1.5 in. This painting is part of the "Universal Us" series based on the notion that science and reason reveal that we are truly one with the universe. All physical things derive from the same elemental building blocks, making us ... all the same. This series depicts diverse beings (some from the imagination), traveling through time, space or our minds and joining together in harmony. In this painting, a Gong Fu figure formed by genetic coding, a tree like plant, and a landscape from another world, are separately and jointly ruled over by a symbolic law of gravity.
