Somehow, translations of Persian texts of Ferdowsi's poems Shahnameh penetrated into Siberia behind the Iron Curtain. Two Critical Questions Acrylic Size of Piece: 42 x 51 x 1.5 Hayoon Jay Lee is an interdisciplinary artist who explores the tension between indulgence and abnegation as it exists in terms of mind and body as well as on a socio-political level. Wish (The Escape) Alabaster Size of Piece: 30 x 15 x 6 This life size torso is a self portrait, created during a tumultuous time in my life. The cloth on the side rises up and the weave turns into forms that become birds, taking flight across the neck. The birds represent my yearning for freedom from a frightening, stifling relationship. I had to hide this stone as I was working on it, to prevent losing it. The day came when I was free, like the birds made from my own hands. This piece gives me a feeling of hope and joy because of the time shared together. It is uncanny how Wish holds natural light, glowing wherever it's placed. Lovers Afloat Alabaster Size of Piece: 15 x 21 x 11 This work is the tangible result of expressing the otherworldly experience of being in love. The man and woman embrace, floating above a sea swept boat, emphasizing their fantastical experience. Anastasia. The Firebird Oil on Canvas Size of Piece: 30 x 24 Dinner with my nonagenarian friends inspired this piece and is why i called it "Social Hour" I decided to render them through colors and shapes so the focus would be on the connection between them and on the mood of the moment rather than on their features. What I see, hear, feel and experience makes its way into my art. Growing up in multiple cultures influences my work, and my love of fairy tales, fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi seeps through as well. I paint mostly in acrylics and gouache and love to experiment with a variety of techniques and materials. At times my work is autobiographical as I aim to tell a story, convey a feeling, or share memories. In Social Hour my focus was on friendship and aging. Through the use of vibrant colors, a sense of movement, and unexpected imagery, I hope the viewer is drawn into my work in a way that provides space for their own interpretation. Poppies Recycled Brown Bags & Acrylic Collage on Canvas Size of Piece: 24 x 36 x 2 My work is a reminder of the peaceful, centered energy of the miraculous, natural living world which surrounds us. My collages are made from torn, recycled brown shopping bags that I first paint with acrylics and then rip them and adhere the pieces to canvas. I am interested in the concept that the bags started out as trees and then were made into paper which was torn and collaged into an image of the natural world, which in itself provided the required inspiration and energy. I hope that the viewer thinks that they are looking at beautiful and serene paintings at first glance, then discover that they are viewing a collage that involved a painstaking genesis in the studio. Each is the product of many months or years of work.In addition, the pieces are often autobiographical. Sudden Breeze Bronze Size of Piece: 21 x 7 x 9 As I walked to my studio, inspiration struck me. A sudden gust of wind swept through me, enveloping me in its embrace. I closed my eyes, tilted my head back, and allowed the wind to fill me up. It touched every part of me. Once I reached my studio, I began working to capture that moment and feeling in my sculpture. When I look at this piece, I can still feel that sense of being taken over by nature and embracing it fully. This, as well as using oversized brushes, gives me speed and fluidity, resulting in either as a fully representational finished painting, or the base on which to build a mixed media collage. I Never Told Anyone Encaustic and Graphite on Carved Basswood Size of Piece: 65 x 60 x 60 My work has always been figurative and focuses on the negative impact of contemporary culture on women and girls' self-image and identity. I Never Told Anyone: is based on research and interviews with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I carved these figures in wood from sketches I made from direct observation and from my imagination. Each piece refers directly to one individual narrative reiterating when the abuse started, I stenciled that age at the base of each piece, and distilled the titles down to that one word my subject kept repeating, I was so humiliated, I was so frightened, I am so ashamed, guilt, insult, injury, denial. Created with inks, clay, wood, textiles, yarns, and found objects, this piece emerges from a deep engagement with the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. Inspired by a visit to Cape Coast and Elmina Castles in Ghana, the work reflects the imprints of history—faces and figures abstracted in the dungeon walls, silent witnesses to untold suffering. This warrior figure stands as a guardian of remembrance, honoring those who endured displacement and oppression. The use of layered materials mirrors the complexity of identity, history, and survival. Textiles and yarns reference cultural traditions and continuity, while clay and wood evoke the raw elements of the land—earth and trees that bore witness to history. Through Akan Warrior, the past finds a voice, urging reflection on historical injustices and their ongoing impact on contemporary experiences. We first encounter the external frame, but an entire universe unfolds as we step through the doors. Our inner world shapes our outer reality, just as the outer world, in turn, influences our inner state. A lingering sense of loneliness etches itself into our expressions, while a habit of noticing beauty and goodness softens our features, bringing light to our presence. Perhaps the most powerful anti-aging secret is a genuine smile—one born from childlike trust in life, the belief that everything is unfolding as it should, and the certainty that our adventures are limitless. There is an ever-present, knowing part of us—an angelic essence—watching over, guiding, and smiling at our journey through our many mystical paths. This painting emerged as an unfolding, evolving process that presented infinite possibilities until I realized it was not about choosing a single direction. I often ask myself what message I can give the viewer through my art. We are living in perilous times with climate change affects accelerating. As an artist I am constantly looking at the beauty of the land and oceans and inspired to create my perception in an abstract and organic way. When one sees my art, I want to convey not just a painting but a story of our planet. I look at the elements of the earth, the balance of nature, and a bird’s eye view of the stunning contrast of land that we don’t always see. While our planet is vast and different it is all one in how we can preserve it for future generations. I see inspiration in the elements of Earth and beyond in its organic and abstract nature. Many of the materials used in painting are derived from elements of the earth and I use these elements to build something abstract and yet symbolic of what our planet is made of. In the painting Chelsea’s Story, the vibrating, sunlit colors on the church spires were absolutely irresistible and something I had to paint in contrast to the rest of the building in shadow. I find this an exciting approach in my work, paying respect to artists I admire who have come before such as Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler and countless masters.
