    acrylic and charcoal on canvas

    Size of Piece: 24 x 20

Having a solid foundation in Natural History and Botany, I find myself inspired by nature at both macro and micro levels. I am captivated by the shapes, structures, and colors of the stems, leaves, flowers, roots, and fruits of the plants I am familiar with. My more recent projects delve into the complexity and interwoven aspects of gardens and natural environments. Typically, I begin a piece with a charcoal drawing, followed by an underpainting in acrylic, where I layer warm and cool colors alternately. The finished artwork emerges through dynamic brushwork, aiming to convey both energy and texture.

  • Spring Vibe acrylic and charcoal on canvas 20 x 16 With a strong background in Natural History and Botany, I am very much drawn to abstracting from nature both on a gross and cellular level. I have a fascination with the structures, forms, and colours of stems, leaves, flowers, roots, and fruiting bodies of the plants I know so well. The twisted and intertwined organic nature of gardens and natural places is where I gather much of my inspiration these days. I am fascinated with abstracting from both the living and dead forms of plants, and I am just as happy painting neglected flower beds with all the weeds and rotting wood and fungi as I am a manicured garden. Strong brushstrokes, colour, and texture are key elements to most of my works. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Girl with Curlers Pencil and Pastel, Pencil on Paper Size of Piece: 10 x 8

“Girl with Curlers” is a portrait of my younger sister.  I was inspired when I saw her wearing her curlers in front of a window, the light from which bathed her hair and face in a soft glow.  I used an HB pencil, along with white, brown, and red pastel pencils on cream-colored paper to create a soft, minimalistic color scheme and used value to capture the interplay between the softness of her face and pajamas and the darker geometric mass of her hair in large curlers.

  • acrylic on cradled wood panel 24 x 18 x .75"
This painting, Star Mass, was inspired by the poem, The Sleeping Prophet (Astronomy of Love) written by Josepha Gutelius. The materiality of this poem really spoke to me, especially the lines, "Every one of us in the plush arms of giants, crammed full of dreams and milk and star mass." (copyright Josepha Gutelius) Those lines evoke thoughts of life, death and rebirth - the fiery moment when a star flares out or when a soul's new journey begins.

  • We Came So Far oil, pastel, acrylic goache, and charcoal on arches oil paper mounted on panel 33 x 24 We're born into our specific time and location- with its own set of cultural norms and realities. I've found myself trying to untangle these. Faced with nostalgia and engaged in personal reckoning, my paintings use broken color and line to create and then break the very figures I render. The surface becomes rich with layered marks as I scratch and draw into the paper. Slowly building the surface, I question more of my own understandings and those driving change. This forms a dialog between myself, those who have come before me, and those who will come. The women are never fully rendered or depicted as smooth and perfect; nostalgia lies- it was never perfect. Each painting also asks the overarching question "What would they say?" These women, standing near but not too close to a house, seem to say, "We came so far." And then, "But where are we going?" Those who came before us demand that we not forget or succumb to nostalgia; nostalgia for a past that was never designed with women's full potential in mind, that seems to be sweeping our country again. • Break the Line- Step Outside to See the Light Mixed Media on Arches Oil Paper Mounted 35 x 26 framed size: 36.5 x 27.5 We’re each born into a specific time and location, with its own set of cultural norms, struggles, and realities. As a woman, I’ve found myself trying to untangle these while facing nostalgia and partaking in personal reckoning. My works on paper have become a visual representation of the questioning dialogue I have with those who have come before me, those who are here, and those who will come. I utilize line to draw and redefine figures, while spray paint, gouache, and oil paint are brushed through them to destabilize them. This visual representation of the disruptive mechanisms that shape our lives is repeated, creating a layered, unfinished look. Like a palimpsest, my surfaces reveal traces of unresolved figures or partially obscured ones; I believe the challenges women face make it difficult to reach their full potential. Nostalgia is a lie, and our future depends on today. In this work, Break the Line, Step Outside to See the Light, I question traditional roles and contemplate the women who have dared to break tradition and step outside. In today’s attack on women’s rights and independence, breaking the line is more important than ever. • The Clothesline
sculpture: double sided cast bronze art medal
    4.5 x 4.5 x 0.375
The practice of medallic art allows me to create smaller, more intimate works. It also lends itself well to create a series of medals. “The Clothesline” is a first in a series I am calling "Mundane Medals," to celebrate all the beauty I find daily in the little details of our busy life. I'm one who loves to hang dry my laundry, and during the winter I string my clothesline up in my bedroom, (adds humidity and saves energy!) When I wake up in the early morning, with the first dim glimpses of sunlight, I see this rhythmic hanging of shapes of my shirts with such great shadows and texture. I am reminded of the early black and white photos of tenement apartments with clotheslines strung about and I think of my well being, the clothes I have, and the quiet comfortable room I choice to dry them in. A feeling of peace and comfort comes over me. On the reverse of the medal is a haiku that I wrote in support of the image on the front of the medal. A double sided medal begins as two separate pieces, each modeled carefully in clay or plaster. Then molds are made, lettering is refined, and waxes are poured of each side. After melding the two waxes together, it is shipped to the foundry to be cast in bronze.

  • Remembrance

    oil on passwood panel

    Size of Piece: 19.25 x 19.25

After graduating college with a degree in Studio Art, I branched out into Graphic Design and mural painting, while continuing to paint on canvas when I had time.

In recent years, with an empty nest and more time, I’ve been painting much more prolifically. While I feel that I’m still learning and will continue to learn with every single new painting, I also feel as if I’ve finally reached a point where I know what I’m trying to express. I’ve also honed my skills to a level where I’m able to effectively convey my concepts.

I've also been showing my work much more publicly and frequently--in group shows in the tristate area in the last few years, with two solo shows since 2019, and another coming up in 2026. I'm thrilled to be a member of NAWA, and have my work shown in this exhibit.

  • Tribute acrylic, Photos printed on vellum collaged on cradled birch board 18 x 24 I’m half-Japanese, half-white. My father’s Japanese-American family was unjustly held in the concentration camp in Minidoka, ID during WWII only because of their ancestry. Around 120,000 Japanese-Americans were rounded up on the West Coast and imprisoned. Over half of them were American citizens but were deprived of their constitutional right to habeas corpus--the right to defend themselves in court. I created "Tribute" to honor my relative Geri Takahashi who was put into concentration camp, along with two of her brothers, a sister and her mother, at the age of 21. She was born in the USA so was an American citizen. She had never even been to Japan yet was treated as if she was a war criminal. Being unjustly incarcerated at a young age affected her self esteem and she never dated or married, she just worked 6 days a week and volunteered in her Protestant church. Like many of her generation who were in camp, she would never speak of her time there. My hope is that "Tribute" tells the story that she could not. • Sink or Swim

goldleaf, washi paper, oil on paper

    Size of Piece: 16 x 16

I am a multi-disciplinary artist in Santa Barbara, CA. I graduated from the University of California San Diego with a double major in art and cinema, then worked as a camera assistant in movies for 20 years while showing my ceramics at LA galleries. I began painting in oil and creating collage during the pandemic and received so much encouragement that I opened my studio in 2023.

My first year as a professional artist, I was awarded an Emerging Artist Fellowship by the California Arts Council. I also had my first international showing at the International Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, with one work winning an "Award of Excellence" and the other a "Gold Award" (the highest honor). I've gone on to win Gold Awards in the same show in 2024 and 2025 and show internationally

World peace and bridging cultures are the themes behind this artwork.

  • Vile chromogenic print on aluminum Size of Piece: 15.75 x 20
"Vile" is a diptych from my larger series "Every Woman and Nobody.” This body of work explores the intersections of memory, trauma, and the body. Here my exposed neck is juxtaposed with a vial constructed of broken glass, hair, and a twig. A translucent overlay of a document, the words obscured, repeated, and reversed, reveals the medical record of a teenage suicide attempt. The two images connect the vulnerability of the body with the symbolism of containment, poison, and preservation. The title, Vile, plays on the dual meaning of “vial” as a vessel and “vile” as something repellent, alluding to the act of swallowing poison and the enduring imprint of harm. • The Rendezvous

    watercolor pencil

    Size of Piece: 15 x 15 x .75

In The Rendezvous, two small creatures--alternately half bird/animal and half human--in an idyllic garden are balancing on a mostly real flower.  Although it looks unreal.

Who or what is the "better half"?  Why?  How does picking a partner who has qualities you are missing or wanting play out?  One might allow any associations it flower and go to seed.

Representing my thoughts on relationships visually provokes thoughts not only in viewers but in me as well.  I think that much of life feels unreal partly because the unconscious and subconscious are running the show that we call life.

In a day of expectations and heightened awareness, my perceptions focus on an unexpected moment of reverie. oil on stitched canvas
Size of Piece: 44 x 33 x 6 The painted constructions emerge as transmutations of my most resounding responses to overcoming the obstacles around and within me. They are not mere representations but transformative expressions borne from profound encounters with people, self-reflection, and the natural world. These works memorialize instances of revelation in the space between observation and understanding—ephemeral moments with a shift in what is valued that would otherwise slip away unrecorded. • Rebirth Transfer Film Print of Digital Collage on Paper Size of Piece: 8 x 12 x 1

I am inspired by the ability of flowers to bring joy even in the darkest of times. In this piece, the contrast in value between the dark background and the light flowers reflects the flowers’ emotional push against darkness which is further emphasized by the subtle gradations in value surrounding the flowers. The value contrasts in the image are further enhanced by the strong color contrasts.

I began the image by drawing flowers in a garden and adding color with pencil and paint. I modified the value, color, forms and composition of the result to create a digital collage in Photoshop. The final image is a digital transfer of the collage to arches 88 paper using transfer film and transfer solution.

  • Petticoats and Pickett Signs encaustic 12 x 9 Suffragettes may seem like ancient history but voting rights are not as stable or guaranteed as we may believe, even in the USA. This series of three images chronicle the ongoing strife. Women secured their vote after much suffering and resistance in 1920. They were dressed in their finest in a time when petticoats were still part of fashion. Black men were granted the right to vote via ratification in 1870 but faced violence and intimidation at the polls. It was not until 1965 in the advent of the Civil Rights movement and the Voting Rights Act before all people regardless of race or gender were promised the true right to vote. Men and women linked arms and marched together. Tragically in 2018, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida was another site in a horrific trend of school shootings. Here the students rebelled against the false comfort of “thoughts and prayers”. They rallied and protested on a level never seen before. They called for safer gun laws. Never Again MSD foundation was formed by survivor Emma Gonzales. This threat started a movement to change the voting age from 18 to 20 to prevent this impassioned and articulate group of young people from making a stand with their vote. They gathered in blue t-shirts with simple white lettering: Parkland. No further explanation needed. • Help Us! digital, archival photograph 10 x 8 My photography portfolios deal with beauty that I find in simple places. I search for art in places often overlooked by people rushing by: street abstractions formed by the effects of traffic and the erosion of painted lines; art in the visible layers of torn papers restructured by random anonymous participants; torn ads; changes from weathering; oxidized rusted surfaces creating patterns and vistas; reflections in puddles; ponds, or store windows; ice patterns; simple arrangements of flowers and fruit at markets. • Remember the ladies... printmaking 10 x 8 framed size: 16 x 14 “Remember the ladies..." references women's rights and what women have to bring to the table in protecting our democracy and humanity. The quote is from Abigail Adams' famous 1776 letter to John Adams, urging him to consider women's rights while forming the new nation. When the Declaration proclaimed "unalienable rights," "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness," and "consent of the governed," these principles did not extend to women. Over the past 250 years, women — leaders, creators, and changemakers have fought to make these words real. Their impact resonates still and impels us forward—to secure our democracy and the rule of law, and to build a more inclusive and humane society. The image, a protective, nurturing gesture of holding something precious in one's lap, combined with those fundamental values, creates a powerful visual metaphor. The woman becomes a guardian of these principles. The monoprint process, putting transmuted ideas and feelings onto a Gelli plate, not knowing what will adhere, amplifies the uncertainty of the future. The layering implies the persistent courage, creativity, and grit that the women before us have inspired as we continue our work. • Riding the Wave

    poplar

    Size of Piece: 15 x 26 x 10

In creating RIDING THE WAVE I brought together my love of poplar wood’s natural beauty and my fascination with the spiral form. First I carved and shaped the wood slab to highlight its particular grain patterns. Then, to form a wavelike shape, I sliced the slab into equal-width sections and attached them to one another with slightly offset positioning. Once assembled I further refined the form. To maximize its sense of movement, I elevated the sculpture and oriented it horizontally.

For once growth is released it can flourish into thoughts, ideas and dreams that build upon themselves. “Buzz on in” Is a more literal take on full bloom. It represents the concept that once you bloom you invite others to become attracted to your courage, vibrancy and delicateness. • Petunias Noir
monoprint on rives BFK (Oil-based ink)
    8 x 10
Flowers always inspire me. Working from life on a solid black inked plate, i lifted out details in the focal area, and then gently massaged the surrounding leaves in a subtle way. Calligraphy brought out the expressive quality of the flowers and leaves. Flowers are rarely painted in black. It seems the antithesis to the riot of color flowers bless us with. These are petunias seen at night glowing in the brightness of a flashlight.

I really enjoyed working with this medium as It is freeing and unique, The final artwork can be quite interesting. It's similar to creating silk scarves. You never know how the final piece will turn out, It can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. I have learned to work with a variety of colors and shapes, and therefore have a better idea of the final artwork. • Striped Sofa Light watercolor Size of Piece: 14.75 x 18.25 Greenstein finds herself captivated by how light shapes the way we see: it defines form, sets mood, and determines what is visible or hidden. Just as compelling are the shadows it leaves behind: shifting, collapsing, and reconfiguring the familiar into the unexpected. Light and shadow are the protagonists. Sharp lines may define a shadow, while a cast light may have a soft, caressing edge. Spaces within the painting become abstract, flattening into what is light and what is not. In this piece, "Striped Sofa Light", I was struck by the way the light interacted with the sofa, creating all sorts of stripes. Seeing this light, in this specific pattern, only seems to happen in early morning winter light. This made the opportunity to paint it even more fleeting and special. Years of experience in the profession of architecture and interior design inspire me to photograph buildings. I have a particular passion for weathered structurers; with colorful ones adding extra charm. The Caribbean is one of my favorite places to fulfill my vision. ‘Crayola’ and ‘George Street’ can be found in Nassau where there is a plethora of colonial English architecture infused with a vibrant tropical color palette. I pack my Nikon and wander the streets searching for potential subjects with sharp lines, high contrast and aim for compositions of colorful saturated blocks of adjacent solid planes.
