Oceanview watercolor 10 x 8 I've always been interested in and inspired by water, how it moves and flows, and have tried to express how it makes me feel in paint. For this painting I was thinking about the night sky over water and the vastness of both. Many transparent washes were applied in order to intensify and vary the color palette. I generally take anywhere from a few weeks to months to complete a painting, as I like to step away and return to a work with a fresh eye for correcting and improving my vision. We were in a church, when I noticed this man, with his head back, in a light coming from a window, which outlined his features in repose. Still Standing photograph 10 x 15 When I walk along the beach, I cannot help but wonder whether the pier will ever be reattached. The structure appears so very strong, especially when walking underneath. It is nearly impossible to imagine it being halved by nature. Both halves seem to exist on their own though they were created as one. I set up my tripod switching from place to place to enable the viewer to catch the 'cut' and wonder about the strength of each piece to prevail without the other. Sam paper on canvas 12 x 9 I attended the outdoor, evening gig where this young man was playing keyboard. I was inspired by the halo effect created by the hot pink stage lighting behind him, as well as the movement created by the breeze. The subject matter in my work varies widely, because as in this case, I am often taken with a scene or an image and immediately wonder if I can capture it in paper, which is my only medium. There is no paint in any of my work. All the color is derived from the papers, in a non-traditional collage technique. Sometimes a single paper is just the right color, but usually several layers are required to achieve the right hue and intensity. Legend of Golden Woman oil on canvas 11 x 14 Two hundred years ago, a legendary "gold-boiling city" known as Mangazeya existed in Siberia. Historical accounts mention a massive golden monument standing at the very heart of this city. The monument took the form of a female figure. Many indigenous peoples of northern Siberia lived under a matriarchal social structure and held a deep belief in nature spirits. It is possible that this "Golden Woman"—or *Golden Baba*—embodied the spirit of wealth and prosperity. As life in Siberia evolved and new trade routes emerged, the city began to decline. Eventually, Mangazeya vanished, and with it, the Golden Baba disappeared as well. While the era of matriarchy now survives primarily in memory, the legend of the Golden Baba lives on to this day. Many believe that the golden sculpture was hidden away somewhere, and they continue to search for it in the secluded depths of the Siberian taiga. Yet perhaps they are looking in the wrong place. It is possible that the Golden Baba is, in fact, a symbol of Woman—the very foundation upon which earthly life rests. She represents our grandmothers, mothers, and sisters—those who give life and protect it. I believe, a golden monument to Woman should be erected in every country; that would be truly fair. This painting was done in a small village in Japan while my family and I were traveling around the world. While sitting a very long time with my daughter on the side of a river we were able to observe this graceful egret. I strive to convey through color and brushwork what my direct experience is in a place. Over the past ten years, I have moved from realism to full abstraction. This painting is my early stages of abstraction in which I was loosening up by using a palette knife. My work comes from my heart and seeks to offer healing and hope. It is a vehicle to see strength and beauty and to connect with the infinite wisdom of the earth. They are opportunistic and clever food gatherers. "Curiosity" was created to highlight the magpie, known for its intelligence and curiosity, and to symbolize communication and connection. In order to capture the serene beauty of nature through the lens of a striking magpie, I placed him perching gracefully on a branch. The bird's vibrant blue and white plumage contrast beautifully against the muted background. Through fabric collage, embroidery, patchwork construction, and soft sculpture, I build immersive environments and hand-crafted creatures that exist somewhere between observation, memory, and imagination. Nature serves as both inspiration and point of departure. Oceans, deserts, forests, birds, and animals appear throughout the work, not as direct representations, but as elements within imagined ecosystems shaped through texture, fragmentation, and narrative. I am drawn to the tactile language of fiber as fabric can suggest terrain, skin, history, and emotional presence simultaneously. Visible seams, frayed edges, and layered surfaces remain intentionally exposed throughout my process. These marks of construction function as evidence of transformation and repair, suggesting that both landscapes and living beings are formed through accumulation, adaptation, and change. The patchwork structures within the sculptural animals especially reflect an interest in resilience and identity assembled from fragments. My framed works often resemble windows into contained worlds, while the sculptures extend those worlds into physical space. Together, the pieces create an interconnected visual language where creature and environment inform one another. Ultimately, my work invites close looking and tactile awareness. Through layered materials and detailed construction, I aim to create spaces and forms that feel intimate, immersive, and open to personal interpretation.
