The Butterfly Dance Oil on Linen Size of Piece: 36 x 36 My art practice in oil and plein air painting is a fusion of scientific precision and artistic expression, capturing the intricate details of human and animal anatomies alongside the dynamic interplay of light and shadow. My works, such as the graceful dance of an full figured nude woman with a Swallowtail butterfly and the solitary figure of a man walking away from a woman who loves him, into a lush, curvilinear, New York State landscape, reflect a deep engagement with nature's beauty juxtaposed against the looming threat of environmental catastrophe. I am an interdisciplinary artist of Abenaki descent, weaving indigenous iconography and ancient narratives into contemporary commentary. My paintings explore the liminal spaces between abstraction and representation, the male and the female, spectacle and solitude, where I challenge these dichotomies to reveal a more nuanced reality. In my work, impending doom casts a shadow over scenes of beauty, chaos, and apocalypse, inviting a dialogue on the fragility of our environment. Through this lens, I employ oil painting not just for its traditional beauty but for its capacity to convey the urgency of ecological issues. My art is a synthesis of science and spirituality, where each brushstroke is an act of both celebration and warning. Growing Up Women Printmaking: Linocut, collage Size of Piece: 10 x 8 Framed Size: 16 x 14 Traveling the world and visually documenting my experiences has given me the unique opportunity to meet women who might look and live differently than I do- but the dreams for our families and communities are so often the same. These linoleum cut prints are culled from reportage drawings I made while on location. The voices and desires are strong. A good leader, with a good heart and valuable message, transcends location. Piggyback Oil pastel on enamel steel oven side Size of Piece: 36 x 24 Madeleine Lord is a multimedia artist, with paintings, prints and welded steel sculptures public and private in her resume. The "Beach Walk" an acrylic on paper painting, was a reverie on couples when Lord was freshly divorced. Piggyback, an oil pastel drawing on an enamel steel oven side, was drawn from a photo of Lord with her then young daughter at a school picnic. "Time is on My Side" is a recent welded steel scrap work that sums up how Lord feels as she navigates her seventh decade. I create art along with music. The execution of the painting therefore becomes a personal performance, as were my song recitals when I was singing professionally, the one difference being: I am not interpreting someone else's poetry - I am creating my own in color and shape. A Fragmented Life Sculpture: Glazed and Fire Stoneware Size of Piece: 8 x 7 x 8 A Fragmented Life evolved from a workshop dealing with the idea of house. A house protects and a house can conceal. The figure is broken but not falling apart. She is trying to gain sustenance from the broken elements below her. The various pieces are glazed, fired stoneware. The McCarthy plaque shows my great grandparents, Dennis and Mary McCarthy, after they emigrated from Ireland to upstate New York, leaving behind the Great Famine. They were married in 1874, and had 7 children including my grandmother Julia Guinane. The relief was modeled in clay and a plaster was made from that and colored with a bronze paint. Love that For Me Fiber Art: Punch Needle Embroidery on Weavers Cloth Size of Piece: 30 x 24 Framed Size: 31 x 25 Rejecting the insinuations often thrust upon the female form, Delaney’s works present highly rigid and resolutely geometric portraits of women, without a stroke of curvature. Their depiction of fractured facial profiles calls out the notion of discomfort from unwanted attention and mis-placed celebration of beauty that women receive simply by just being out in the world. The Artist presents a reaction-driven portrayal of those exchanges, and simultaneously shows strength embodied in female agency. These works re-examine our perceptions on “social appropriateness”. The Artist's mission is to abstract identifiable features and remove individual characteristics to varying degrees, creating broadly familiar subjects that reflect femininity as part of the Whole rather than the Individual. Feline Feminist Mixed Media Collage and Acrylic on Sintra panel Size of Piece: 24 x 18 Creating artwork can be a powerful and universal vehicle for human connection. For me, the challenge is to touch the timeless themes iterated in visual art, literature, drama and music throughout recorded history, while staying relevant and responsive to one’s own cultural place in the timeline. Since childhood to the present day, I have been a painter and visual artist. My images are primarily painted directly from life, with the subject typically casting a gaze back at the viewer. My paintings respond to themes “humanity”- my fellow women, forced migration, social justice, civil rights, natural and man-made calamities, as well as the respite of nature’s continuum. My process comes from my desire to bypass self-conscious inhibitions in the pursuit of self-expression. In 1990, I felt artistically "reborn" when I started painting with my non-dominant left hand and discovered renewed creative freedom. This, as well as using oversized brushes, gives me speed and fluidity, resulting in either as a fully representational finished painting, or the base on which to build a mixed media collage. Utilizing physical collage materials such as torn maps, shards of color, images from printed media, and my own repurposed drawing fragments as my palette, the works become emblematic statements of the over-stimulation and media bombardment of contemporary society, in concert with the directly observed presentation of a human subject. The Delight Project: No. 5 Oil on Canvas Size of Piece: 20 x 16 My name is Anne Pollard James and I paint the spectacular strength of women. My current project, 'The Delight Project' examines many of the notions of the concept of how we 'brave the body’.  As women, we are always asked to cover up and camouflage our natural bodies. In fact, based on what we see on a screen, you would never know that skin has scars, pores and complex texture. That the body is as pragmatic as it is mysterious. The very things that make us strong and capable are the things that our cameras filter out. Like, the muscles and the fascia that mold fat into cellulite and keep our legs strong to carry us on our way. And how our faces line and fall with gravity and then peak to glorious smiles that light up everything. And how our bellies rise and fall, and are streaked with the pale-blue-peach hued marks that stretch to hold us. For this project, I offered an open invitation to participate in this series. And then, I simply met women where they are and captured small moments of joy and delight of self, to include in a series of painted images based on a photo that we worked together to create. Here are their stories.
