monoprint with watercolor 18 x 24" Loie Fuller was a pioneer modern dancer, or “free dance,” as it was called in early days. She was born Marie Louise Fuller in 1862 in my home state of Illinois and renamed herself “Loie” at age 16. She was filmed in 1902, perhaps the first film of a dancer. I imagined her perhaps in a mirror, or doing a duet with herself, in this monoprint. This print, on Hannemuhle paper, was created from a plexiglass plate with a dremel, inked as an intaglio print and subsequently hand watercolored. I arrange and rearrange and look for backgrounds, and then click-click, I have a photo. Next I work on variations, exploring where the graphic wants to go, revealing hidden layers. Along with an actual plague, the overturning of Roe V Wade and continuous misogyny has afflicted our nation and preoccupied my art practice. I decided to express my frustration and rage concerning our country's division and lack of empathy through collage. Using vintage imagery with contemporary themes in red, white, blue and black, and hand coloring with ink, colored pencil and acrylic paint, a political collage series was born. Their strength and fortitude supported the growing industrial power of the United States. The memories of these long-forgotten women reverberate through the dilapidated equipment, and the traces of their lives intertwines with the weeds that now reclaim the space. The drawing of the factory marks the history; the painting indexes the emotions of the women who worked there and the humming of the now-silent looms. She agreed to pose for me and I took a few photos. She said she had been a student there, many years ago and the school enabled her to become a successful graphic designer. The other two photos were taken at a Long Island Peaceful Protest event in 2020, following the death of George Floyd.. 'Speaking Out' is a woman talking about justice and women's rights. 'Women's Rights' showed a woman with a baby on her back, speaking out about the need for equality in healthcare for women. The dominant female presence shaping their lives. What could be a more vital character in telling the story of your life? Growing up I felt our school was really lacking in history. I only remember hearing about Inuit and feudalism and serfs and such. Therefore, as I have aged I am revisiting history whenever I can. I recently read about many incredible black women facing terrible racism and hardship but still able to be strong and make a difference in this world. Ida B.Wells was a journalist who exposed the brutality of lynching in the South. She also was a leading figure in the women's suffrage movement, having to go up against the prodominently white Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mary Church Terrell was one of the first African-American women to earn a college degree. She was the first African -American on the school board. She founded the National Association of Colored Women and the National Association of college women. And she was a charter member of the NAACP. What a role model in those rough times! Educator Statement As a Signature Member of the National Association of Women Artists and an educator at the Dartmouth Cultural Center I had the good fortune of participating in this inaugural educational event. The DCC students, Iria DeValles-Vieira, Beth Russo, and Robert Vesprini, accepted the challenge of creating a group artwork. Each of them created two pieces that narrate their interest in the oceans that are part of our everyday life. They started the project in mid-September and completed the work in mid-December. Working in class under my direction and on in their studios as a team. Weekly feedback and critique fuel the process until all were happy with the result. Over the twelve weeks they planned, executed, and delivered these amazing efforts. Each piece uses a construction tube as a substrate that was painted, sanded, decoupaged, and covered with found objects of their choice. These artists have taken numerous abstract painting classes at the DCC. They are quite familiar with each other’s methods and thought processes. We hope to display the artwork series, Neptune’s Rabbit Hole, in various public venues over the next several months. Given the amount of work each artist dedicated to the project they are to be commended for their excellent work as individuals and as a team. Educator Statement My artwork is grounding to my soul. I am taken aback by the beauty and intangible qualities of natural flora: the various textures; the amazing flowers and fruits and foliage; and most of all, the spectacular rejuvenation after what appears to be a most definite death in the bleakness of a cold, dark winter. In our largely urban society, the ability to appreciate our natural surroundings has become dulled-the ability to see the wonder in a tree, the magic and the mystery in a flower, the indescribable peace and contentment that can fill one’s heart. I try to show this to the viewer as my work is a surreal reminder of the peaceful, centered energy of the miraculous, natural living world which surrounds us. My collages are made from torn, recycled brown shopping bags. I am interested in the concept that the bags started out as trees and then were made into paper which was torn and collaged into an image of the natural world, which in itself provided the required inspiration and energy. A quiet harmonic stillness is comprehended. Educator Statement My name is Tamara Zalianyak (Toma Zale), I’m an artist and art instructor for adults. My work is inspired by the vibrant colors of nature and I often use bright and rich colors in my paintings. I believe that inside every adult lives happy and carefree child and my idea is to enthuse the viewer desire for happiness and enjoyment. This approach I bring to my art teaching where I encourage every student to experience the joy of creation and love for their work. I have been an art instructor since 2016, guiding adults though a creative journey at various centers, community spaces, parties and entertainment venues. My lessons cover a range of topics, including color theory, perspective, landscape, seascape, still life, abstract and Neurographica©. Typically, my classes include discussion of the subject(s) or scenery painted, color palette and then followed by step-by-step instructions. I tend to choose bright and more complex compositions as I know these would challenge my students, provide sense of satisfaction at the end of the lesson and inspire for further learning and technic improvements. At the same time my classes are fun, joyful and full of laughter, fostering a warm and friendly atmosphere. They serve as great place for mental rejuvenation, creativity and socialization. It is not just about learning art; it is about creating an environment where minds can recharge, creativity can flourish and individuals can connect through the shared artistic experiences.

Educator Statement Teaching is a profound journey for me, a pathway through which I witness the emergence of talent in students as I impart knowledge and skills. It transcends mere skill-sharing; it's a collaborative exploration of creativity and self-discovery. I am thrilled and honored to be a guide, unveiling the distinctive essence of each student's soul that beautifully manifests in their creative expressions. I conducted the "Imaginary Playground" project at Hilltop Country Day School, a community of learners. Tiny books became a part of the mixed media piece right from the start because students wanted to express how important books are. "Inclusive Wonderland Imaginary Playground" became a canvas for discussing and visualizing a better future, fostering self-expression, and nurturing creative collaborations. Meaningful conversations unfolded, centering around the essence of what is important—such as the ability to express our best versions and the profound impact of love for learning. An innovative touch was added as students incorporated a mirror into the artwork's center, inviting viewers to feel included in the experience. Please watch a video where students articulate their collective vision for "Imaginary Playground," showcasing the diverse perspectives of grades K to 8 as they collaboratively crafted an "Inclusive Wonderland Playground." Further, I present individual visions from selected students captivated by this idea, offering unique insights. printmaking 8 x 8" Universe Series uses a variety of animals to represent life as they ponder the latest scientific theories concerning the Universe. These playful explorations look toward space and at humankinds' reaction to it. Who hasn't wondered what it would be like to live in the caves of Mars, thought about when we might be drawn into the black hole that keeps our galaxy together, or seen heaven when we look up at the stars? This work of art is a serigraph, or more commonly known as a silkscreen print. It is a hand-made, small-edition print, that uses my graphite drawing as its basis, and is an original work of art. What makes serigraphy the perfect printmaking method for my art, is I can retain areas of pure white paper, capture the tonality of my drawings, and place blocks of intense color that either overlaps part of the image, or lightly kisses the edge of image. Serigraphy is a modern printmaking method with a very old history. Stencil-based, hand-made prints originated during the tenth century in China. They made their first appearance in Europe around the 18th century and are used throughout the world today. This mode of printmaking has evolved over time, so that Modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, Pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Peter Max, and Contemporary artists including me, have found it an attractive medium for the creation of fine art. mixed media 9 x 9" If you see a woman walking and occasionally swooping down to pick up a shiny metal object, a sparkling gem, or an interesting piece of metal or plastic, it could be me. I am constantly searching for treasures on the street, at flea markets, in thrift stores, in discarded jewelry, in the trash room in my co-op, and anywhere I go. When I get home, I soak the day’s finds in detergent, rinse and dry them, then squirrel them away in clear plastic boxes and drawers, along with things I purchase, that fill my studio waiting to be turned into a collage, assemblage, or mixed media art piece. I get my inspiration from lots of sources, including museums and galleries, magazines and books, art classes, artists, and my imagination and dreams. I constantly teach myself new techniques, experiment with ways to work with different materials, and share ideas. Many of my pieces come about serendipitously, trying one thing and ending up with something unexpected and wonderful, which is what happened for the pieces I am submitting. My artistic goal is to create seductive surfaces and provocative forms that involve the viewer in an emotional visual adventure. This painting is executed with acrylic paint on a third dimensional gourd. I redefine the use of the natural plant gourd as a third dimensional canvas. The gourd is a member of the pumpkin family. This plant form is dried, opened and the seeds removed. The surface is primed, images are rendered and finished with a protective matte varnish. They suggest a sense of place, of peace, of elements of the natural world. Inspiration comes from everywhere: feelings, poetry, nature, things that take my breath away. These are tucked away into a kind of reservoir, echoes of them surfacing later in my paintings Starting with random marks and responding to them intuitively, I approach them with a sense of play, experimentation and an exploration of the materials, as much as an emotional response to the evolving painting. I work in acrylics, encaustics and oil & cold wax and mixed media, all involved with building layers and working back into them, scraping and dissolving to expose what lies beneath. For me, it is all about the process: finding a sense of order, of refuge and letting go; becoming immersed in the moment and the physicality of engaging the surface. These images offer us rare moments of solitude, time to slow down and observe the world around us, and to enjoy quiet beauty and serenity. A photograph captures a portion of this beauty and tranquility, offering viewers quiet moments of reflection. I use water and light as beautiful threads that draw the eye in, providing an opportunity to examine nature and the built environment. The quality of light is of paramount importance, defining the textures and forms in nature, and patterns of light and shadow. A strong sense of design is also important in these images. I use the platinum/palladium printing process to capture a softer, painterly effect, evoking late 19th century idyllic landscapes and lending a poetic quality to the images. The platinum/ palladium process, a time-honored process, also renders a rich tonal scale and permanence to the images. It is a time-intensive, hand-made process—from coating the paper with varying mixtures of the platinum/palladium solution to exposing the negatives to the sun. oil 10 x 10" All I ever wanted to be was smaller. I’ve found refuge from this compulsive desire by allowing myself space in the work. In my body of work, autobiographical paintings depict tender moments from my day to day life. Portraits of my partner and I provide queer representation void of hyper sexualized or traumatic imagery, with this I begin to disrupt heteronormative narratives, and provide images of queer joy. In focusing on the figure through a queer feminine gaze I create colorful and carefully composed oil paintings that allow bodies that are often asked to shrink, a place to be vulnerable and take up space. Candid photos often acting as my source material allow insecurities to penetrate the most loving of works. Through eye level and framing the casual nature of the references invites the viewer in as a participant rather than a voyeur. There is sympathy and authenticity to the rendering of each subject, with careful consideration put into capturing the volume of the forms. My emphasis is always on the sense of touch, creating works that are tender and where each push and pull of the skin is felt. Thoughtfully placed line and vivid color works to exploit the most tense areas of the work, helping each to feel uncomfortably intimate. printmaking 10 x 8" My purpose in making art is to touch the ineffable, to go beyond words into the deep belly of creativity. It is to meet myself in the wellspring and have a conversation with the viewer, to communicate in a deep and intimate way at first sight, in an instant. I strive only to be in harmony with each line, each splash of color and splatter of ink as it strikes the painting surface, to reveal what is already there. The experience of making marks gets truly exciting when I resist the impulse to name what I’m seeing take shape and open myself up to the possibility of not knowing, of just seeing and experiencing whatever is in front of me – what it is saying, what it is becoming. To let it do me rather than me do it. I wish for anyone who stands or sits in front of a piece of art created in my studio this same experience. I don’t want viewers to know or feel what I feel. I want them to know and feel whatever they feel. That is for me the true nature of all art: beauty that is unrepeatable and unnamable.
