  • oil on panel 14.25 x 14.25 x .75" I love to paint little vignettes of everyday life. I have a bookshelf in my home studio that has my art books and little items that I love. One day as I was walking by it caught my eye and I took a some photos. This is one of 2 paintings that I have done of my book shelf. They feature "cameos" of favorite artists.

  • Mixed Media The Impressure of Nothingness into Something 19 x 15 x 2 in. “The Impressure of Nothingness into Something” is #6 of a series of 12 Vestal Plates. It. is about love and the creative force: where we feel the physical convergence of the universe in our hearts which then moves us to make art, to be of service to our gifts, to express our spiritual nature. The stitching represents spine, ribs and alignment, the string of beads enhances the sacred womb, the copper leaf on breasts expresses vision and a wink gesture. • Spirit Vessel with Gold Markings Shellac and gold flake on hardened cartapesta Size of Piece: 52 x 15 The sculpture explores the imprint of time, history, and mind on the interaction of materials, as experienced in myth, spirit, and the body. For this piece I created an armature of a young woman and wrapped her like an ancient Egyptian deity in layers of paper soaked in hardening agents. When she dried, I pulled her spirit’s shell away from the armature, creating a hollow vessel that viewers can look into to see where her spirit had once lived. Inside there remains a sense of beautiful nothingness that has joined the larger mind that flows through time, consciousness , relationships, challenges and opportunities. The outer Vessel shell represents the memory of love having passed through it, and I adorned it with golden circles and a triangle, symbols of perfection, strength and wealth. • Dance of the Lily Pads Color Pencil on Drafting Film Size of Piece: 23 x 30 Realism is the style that I have embraced for my work. Perhaps the truth is that it embraced me, flowing naturally from my hand, with inspiration coming from the world around me. Colored pencil is the medium I have chosen for most of my work. What started as a lifestyle choice (pencils are clean and easily transportable from primary residence to lake house) became an artistic choice. I’m a control freak - free and loose is NOT my style - so colored pencils are the perfect medium for me. Their layering and blending capabilities, the transparency of some colors, and vibrant pigments help me convey the interplay of color and light in my subject matter. At times, I use colors that are more brilliant or saturated than what I see in nature. It pleases me, and I hope it pleases the viewer. • colored pencil 22 x 16" My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family and the traditions we share, or nature including rivers, lakes, rocks, and plants. Nature work is usually inspired by the lake area in northern Wisconsin where we have a family lake house, and by the gardens and trees of the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, or by public gardens I visit on trips. I want the viewer to see the beauty of those places, to smell the scent of flowers and hear the rush of a river depicted in my work. Winter's End is inspired by a river near my lake house just as the long, cold, dark winter thaws into spring. Realism is the style that I have embraced for my work. Perhaps the truth is that it embraced me, flowing naturally from my hand. I have worked in oils, acrylics, and watercolors and occasionally still do, but colored pencil is the medium I have chosen for most of my work. At times, I use colors that are more brilliant or saturated than what I see in nature, and this is the case with Winter's End. I want the viewer to feel the coming of spring even as the snow sparkles on the rocks. That color pleases me, and I hope it pleases the viewer. • color pencils on Strathmore Bristol Smooth 400 Series 17 x 13" Mushroom foraging is a popular Czech tradition and it’s one that my family (I am of Czech descent) enjoys. Chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, black trumpets and, of course, morels are our favorites. The basket of morels in my piece was inspired by mushrooms we picked on family land. I started looking at the photos I took that day. My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family, the traditions we share, or nature so I decided the textures of the mushrooms and basket would make a fantastic colored pencil work. The details were daunting and required patience I don’t always have, but the result was worth the effort!

Closing the Gap uses rescued vintage table linens and hand dyed fabrics, some of which were outgrown clothing. The colored textiles represent individuals, families, communities and organizations. The white space is the distance and time between them. As we seem to be experiencing disconnection from the collective whole, this piece is about the energy and perhaps turmoil that is necessary to close the gap that divides us. The vintage textiles and color palette are a nod to the mid-century, when we were more connected to our communities yet fractioned as a society. It is history repeating itself through art.

After the passing of my late husband I traveled to Egypt, land where the afterlife is revered. In examining my photographs of that part of the world, I wanted to honor culture and consciousness. This digital collage came about by combining images of symbolic significance to me with text gleaned from an ancient language. The Latin phrase translates from MEMENTO VIVERE to REMEMBER TO LIVE. The imagery background is the sand of The Sahara Desert, near the Pyramids in Giza. Temporary footprints in the sands are analogous to the finite and fleeting qualities of life. The foreground pyramid image represents a trinity with ocean water contained within its frame.

  • Walled Up: Common Place Series Pastel Size: 10 x 10 I am a painter of contemporary landscapes that often blur the distinctions between realism and abstraction. The driving force behind my work is my interest in finding and amplifying the beauty and mystery that exists quietly all around us, both obvious and hidden. I am always seeking ways that the humblest scenes reveal profound insights and offer wordless understanding. Known for working in pastels for nearly 30 years, my imagery often uses a close focus on water, rocks, and foliage. The inclusion of reflections and shadows, often without a horizon for reference, allows a range of interpretations and encourages the viewer to move beyond the literal with me. While my imagery remains grounded in the natural world, I alter or emphasize at will. Even when including human constructions I focus on the abstract and curious elements. I love creating passages of paint where one can move without concern for naming. Free association and personal response are encouraged. I hope my take on a scene can clarify or illuminate nascent insights for others as well as for me. • acrylic, permanent inks, white tissue paper on canvas 27.5 x 21.5"
This painting is inspired by remembered tulips whose magic and beauty in their fullness of bloom touched me emotionally. This painting, as with much of my work, evolved over time through my passionate interest in investigating and exploring the tools of painting, including color and textures and also line, shape patterns and layering -in service of expressing the magic and joy of nature's creations. I seek to create paintings which create magic and have an emotional resonance. I want my paintings to invite the viewer to enter, wander around, and also be rewarded for prolonged looking by making continual new discoveries such as finding a color, texture, or shape not immediately noticed.

  • acrylic 21.5 x 27.5 x 1.25" This painting is from my earlier series of Still Life paintings. Having grown up on my parent's dairy farm surrounded by nature's beauty which included my Mom's flower garden with seemingly unending blossoms and her vegetable gardens. Mom's vegetables such as squash and cucumber had such sculptural leaves and gerbera daisy leaves remind me of them. This painting makes visual my growing up experience described above, made visual through integral connections of music, intuition, and meditations over many moments in time.

  • Oil and pencil on canvas
    12 x 12"
Field-test: to test something by using it in the actual conditions it was designed for Field Test is comprised of four small oil paintings: Yellow House, Checkerboard, Flowers, and Circus Tent. Each panel was painted as a standalone artwork that could also be viewed together as a quadriptych. After being isolated during the 2020 pandemic, socializing and exploring commonplace, frequently visited locations seemed like new experiences. The tasks, outings, and recreations that were once part of everyday life became not so normal anymore. I equated venturing out as some sort of field test of the new normal. Slowly we began to forget what that was like and life turned routine again. With this work, I hoped to capture the wonder, awe, and even hesitation with which we approach new experiences.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil 12 x 12" My artwork is about personal connection - to each other, to the space around us, and to the things within it. I use color in my work to represent life and emotion, and to create make-believe places. They are dreamlike worlds I fill with pattern, shape and semi-recognizable objects. I hope the ambiguity in my work allows the viewer to find their own story in it.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • charcoal 28 x 18 x 1" I raced home after witnessing the total envelopment of a familiar coastline across Oyster Bay from West Neck Beach. I usually study from life for inspiration for my abstractions but this night I simply wanted to record and pay homage how uplifted and untethered I felt seeing hints of a familiar shore and knowing just where I was. I immediately made two pieces and this particular one bears mark like seagulls feet as we often see them in the sand but they (the marks) give the impression of waves softly crashing into the shore. The symbolic abstraction of the creatures who inhabit this place, being present in the marks was a surprise and a delight.

  • colored infrared print on vellum gilded with 24kt gold leaf 15 x 13 x 1"
Sheldon Ruins is the ruins of a Prince Williams Parish Church in South Carolina originally built in the mid-1700’s. General Sherman burned it down in the Revolutionary War in 1865. This image was created by using a fully converted digital infrared camera with a filter of 590 nm giving some red and blue color along with the infrared wavelengths of light displayed. I chose to gild this with 24kt gold leaf to create the blue/green of the sky and to accentuate the antiquity and beauty of this ruin not typically seen in the United States.

  • Raku fired ceramics with underglazes 9.75 x 9 x 6"
I am interested in how nature can act as a metaphor, for instance, how to personify hope, aging, nobility, etc. This ceramic bust was fired in the Japanese Raku process. The word 'Raku' means enjoyment. The figure here is a portrait of my mother, the "Garden Lady." Her head is slightly uplifted, eyes and mouth smiling. Hummingbirds, a dragonfly, a daisy, and gardenia flowers, all symbols of joy adorn the figure. The crackle glaze is a natural result of the quick firing and cooling.

  • monotype 21.5 x 17.5" My piece "Wandering Triangle" is one of a series of monotypes where I have experimented with movement and abstraction. Monotypes are often called "the painters's print" because they are a free, easy and fluid technique. People have often commented on how much directional motion they observe in both my prints and paintings. This may emerge from the fact that I am a dancer in addition to being a visual artist. In this case, the triangle subject seems to take a multi-dimensional journey as we all do in life.

  • paper, wire mesh, aluminum wire 14 x 12 x 2" Within explores the push and pull into and out of restriction vs freedom. Using wire mesh, aluminum wire, and paper, I created a series of 'almost-but-not-quite-real' gateways and spaces that could be interpreted as constrained enclosures or places of safety and shelter. My choice of the wire mesh presents a dominant texture and pattern, begging the question: is it harsh or soothing? While I try to answer this, I also invite the viewer to wander into the space and solve the mystery for themselves.

As the third in this Nature-Tecture series, which searches for harmony between that which is manmade and the natural world, this piece pushes further on than its predecessors (#1 and #2), Here, I felt compelled to place the plants bursting out from behind these manmade forms. For me, they send a message: that they are present, vital, growing. This begs the question: What are we doing to protect plants, animals, oceans – and ourselves? And, what is preventing us from taking the action necessary to secure the health of our planet? Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

12.5 x 13.75" My 12-piece Screen Shot series explores the transformed landscape of communication in the digital age, particularly under the shadow of the pandemic, which changed the way I connected with family, friends, and colleagues. Due to the lockdown, I found myself attending more and more virtual meetings and interacting with people on a screen. These works depict a screenshot of those people and the spaces behind them during these meetings. I strategically used silhouettes, which both safeguard privacy and add an element of intrigue. While protecting a person’s identity, I also offer an intimate glimpse into their personal spaces – pictures on the wall, books on their shelves, pets on their laps, prompting reflections on the dichotomy of connection and isolation in our digital reality.

  • Within #3 Mixed Media Collage Size: 10 x 8 Framed Size: 14 x 12 I create abstract three-dimensional collage by transforming flat images and shapes into raised architectural forms that add depth, texture and shadows. Using paper in rich tones, I cut, score and fold to build these forms, then combine them with other materials, like photographs, wood, fabric, metal, plastic, and wire mesh. The juxtaposition of these elements -- casting shadows and highlighting contact points – enhances the intention of each piece. I find inspiration from African sculpture; the Constructivism, Geometric Abstraction, and Cubism art movements; the work of Louise Nevelson; the ‘illogical perspective’ of Giorgio de Chirico and M.C. Escher; Joseph Cornell’s shadow boxes; and Frank Stella’s metal reliefs, among many others. My work lands somewhere between the real and the imagined. Each piece features doorways, walkways and passages, leading the viewer to spaces of mystery, questions and the unknown. These pieces serve as visual metaphors for issues that impact me, from environmental concerns and global conflicts to the search for inner peace. As viewers consider this ‘almost-but-not-quite-real’ world, I invite them to ask questions, like: What is it? Where is it? What do I see and feel? And ultimately, do I find myself in it, or not? Through these questions, I aim to foster deeper connections and understanding, encouraging introspection and the recognition of our shared experiences.
