pastel 12 x 9" There are two ways I approach my paintings. With abstract paintings, I start with no plan. I start with mark making, texture and/or paints, inks, etc. and let my intuition guide me. I may use acrylic, oil, ink, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, or all, along with many materials I’ve collected to add texture. I love this approach because it is so freeing. I love the play of bright colors against neutrals, dark against light, texture against smooth. I may end up with a painting I like or I may not. If not, I keep working and adding layers/scraping away until I do. Painting like this sometimes seems to be about solving problems, using my technical skills, letting my intuition guide me. With abstracts, I'm usually inspired by a strong emotion I'm feeling. The visual has more of an impact in expression than words do. The mind is too involved with words, but with visuals, so many senses and subconscious feelings come into play. I paint landscapes by planning a scene that captures; playing with different color schemes that best express what I see, doing sketches to determine the best layout and composition. The painting may or may not follow the course I planned. I get excited about the contrast between shadows and light coming from behind, or the surprising amount of color in an ocean wave, or the moodiness of a sky. Acrylic 13 x 13" I seek to express the intangible experience of spirit. It is the awareness of the big picture. It is about the meaning of life and connection to self and others. I am exploring and expressing an inner experience through abstract images. I paint images that feel solid and spacious which is how I feel when I am experiencing “presence”. I have always noticed the subtleties of life whether it was observing beauty in nature or man-made, overcoming difficult challenges, and the complexities of the human experience. I process these experiences through painting.

I Wonder... Pastel Size: 9 x 9 - I’m primarily a portrait artist as I find nothing more visually compelling, more inspiring, than the human face and figure. Much of my work is done through Zoom, which gives me the opportunity to paint people who can be anywhere. My usual chosen medium is soft pastels. - I was excited to paint the renowned actor Alfre Woodard at a Zoom session hosted by an artist who knew her. Starting with a pastel pencil sketch, I then used a yellow pastel pencil to indicate every place the light touched Alfre’s face and hair. Knowing the location of the lightest spots remained important when applying multiple layers of pastel pencil and soft pastel. I loved painting her beautiful hair, using many layers of alternating warm and cool colors. - I Wonder… is a pastel portrait of a model I’ve painted many times – I hoped to capture her intriguing expression as she appeared to be deep in thought. I used a similar process for this as for the Woodard portrait: after the initial sketch and yellow highlights, I applied multiple layers of pastel pencil and soft pastel to build up the image and convey a mood of quietness. - The model for Graceful is a dancer whose quick poses demonstrate her love of dance. These two simple, timed ink and watercolor sketches express my delight in her lovely movement. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Acrylic and paper on wood panel 7 x 7"

acrylics on mixed media paper mounted to wooden cradle 7 x 7 1.25" Abstract art for me is a chance to invoke a wild, primal and unconventional style of expression full of color. I start each work with no real direction or plan and as the paint hits the canvas the story comes to life. Whether that story comes from a life experience or something affecting the world today, each work will become a window into a narrative once completed. My wish for whomever glances upon my art is to temporarily leave the conventional and glance into a gateway of a vibrant story.

Traditionally, textile works have mostly been women's work. I love combining fiber with other elements; the stainless steel washers offer an industrial feel while the soft pink Ghiordes knots of yarn and the sari silks of the skirt suggest femininity.

acrylic paint, gold & copper leaves 24 x 24 x 1.5" Heavy Metal to me is a telling of who I used to be as an artist, and who I have become. Beginning over a decade ago with art deco and steampunk designs. Evolving now into my own personal style of maximalist abstract expressionist works. I used to be overly concerned about perfection, and fine lines, where now I can embrace an unfinished, rustic background. There is perfection in imperfection. fiber art 12 x 12" The muscle memory of sewing is guided by recollections, stringing the grit and tooth of an abduction, the furrows of seams and seeming, of life stories fought out, patched out before paint would dry, better rather knit, pounded out in coarse intermingling of fibers, torn out and restitched and needle felted, a forgiving medium where every loop can be redone and undone, tacked and basted anew. Each embroidery, created from an original figure drawing is transformed into needlepoint, a quilt of pores, threaded with twenty or more colors, bounded and knotted with each physical perforation, a performative puncture onto self-healing felt. embroidery and felting 13 x 10" This is one of a series called “Ariadne Slept Here” showing Ariadne in current locales, a spinner who can help us escape the modern Minotaurs. Bonnie MacAllister renders in figurative embroidery, handspun threads, globally sourced farm wools and fibers, and recycled textiles. The language of textiles is also that of connection, threading together identity, history, biology, and personal experience. My portraits on handmade felt are created from an original figure drawing, transformed into needlepoint, bounded and knotted with each physical perforation, a gesture of self-healing, promoting mindfulness.

Pastel 14 x 13 in. 'At the Met' is a representational depiction in pastel of a group of young adults taking a break from viewing the masterpieces surrounding them. I was particularly struck by the beauty of the far right girl's red hair and how it contrasted with the cool hues of her surroundings - in addition, the dynamics of the four youths resting on the bench seemed to encapsulate an iconic tourist experience AT the MET and motivated me to want to paint this scene.

Lilies 20251crayon, pastel and digital photo collageSize: 24 x 18Joy, happiness, anxiety, pain, grief… any and all emotion that come with being a parent or caregiver-- my work explores the idea of memory, motherhood, children, health, life, place, and identity. While investigating the role of the caregiver lilies and their pads are not only beautiful, but they are also caretakers of the ecosystem in which they live. They purify the pond water and create a protective home for aquatic creatures—such as fish and frogs.

acrylic 17.5 x 21.5" As a young adult I read the book, Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The story stayed with me throughout my life, it was about "the deterioration of a woman's mental health while she is on a "rest cure" on a rented summer country estate with her family. Her obsession with the yellow wallpaper in her bedroom marks her descent into psychosis from her depression throughout the story." She would pick away at the wallpaper, creating images. Maybe it was the idea of what our minds are capable of, how much they can lead us in one direction or another. From elation to depression. My painting reflects both sides of this experience.

acrylic painting 20 x 1.5 x 24" A blank canvas provides an opportunity to build connections between the chaos of the outside world and the deep human response it evokes. Sometimes my artwork is quite literal, capturing the light and beauty of a particular moment. Moving away from that moment, the work evolves into a more abstract representation of memory and emotion. I've always sought solace in nature, and as a Master Gardener and beekeeper, I've witnessed the delicate balance between ecosystems and the importance of conserving natural resources. I feel compelled to capture the beauty of this interdependence in a meaningful and expressive way, communicating the importance of environmental sustainability. Acrylic on Canvas Hope Springs Size: 48 x 48 x 3 Birds began to appear in my work at the start of the Pandemic. The beginning of the bird fashionistas - little characters that emulate the personalities of the people around me: They are fun to make and are a constant reminder of what is important in my life. When someone asks me “What happened to you during the pandemic?” I think “Well, a lot,” but the constant reminder of life came from looking through the living room window, watching a cascade of different types of birds vying for their spot at the bird feeder. Over and over and over! So many hours spent on the sofa just watching them and being thankful for being alive. While sitting on that sofa I did draw a LOT in my journal book. I wrote about the places I’ve been to, the people I’ve been with, meanings of the icons and images I was incorporating in my work. When we all began to venture out of our houses, I was more mindful of the journaling process and drawing the “memories” of place. The images in the journal book are the genesis of this work. Self Portrait in Studiographite and charcoal on paperSize: 32 x 24I wanted to use technical skill to explore layered narrative to produce a self portrait. The drawing’s composition, with its art-within-art motif, invites viewers into a personal, almost introspective world, echoing the recursive nature of artistic creation itself. The choice to depict myself holding another artwork is a visual metaphor—it nudges viewers to consider not only how artists present themselves, but also how they value and interact with their own creations. The reflections in the glasses are particularly arresting; they not only demonstrate technical prowess with highlights and optical nuance but also gently underscore the idea of seeing—inwardly and outwardly. This motif hints at the multiplicity of perspectives an artist must hold: that of creator, subject, and observer.

Joseph's Tunic Watercolor on paper Size: 20.75 x 24" For the past several years I’ve been dealing with my daughter’s untimely death. She taught middle school ancient history. That’s what led me to look at a schematic of the Biblical tabernacle in Jerusalem and make paintings based on it. Some of this work has focused on the scarlet, purple, and indigo veils that separate the three sections of the tabernacle. Recently, I’ve delved into the Old Testament to learn about the cloths used to make garments. I’ve made paintings of Jospeh’s tunic and Job’s sack cloth. I like the meditative quality of this new work and how it sustains me. After covering the surface of the paper or canvas with hundreds of circles or ellipses, I build layer upon layer of paint leaving some areas exposed. Making painting with these references lets me feel connected to my daughter and is helping me process my grief. oil, colored pencil 17 x 11 x 1.5" My wish is to make connections between things I understand and things I don't. After my daughter's death, I read about the ancient tabernacle in Jerusalem. It had curtains of scarlet, purple, and indigo. I painted circles, triangles, and squares using these colors. In the middle of the painting I placed the letters of her name--b i d u-- copied numerous times onto a white rectangle. Why? I can't say. But this painting evokes a feeling of the sublime for me at a time of upheaval and loss. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

cast concrete, reclaimed materials, and pigments 3.75 x 10 x 2" In an attempt to adapt to the onslaught of changes being done to the environment by humans, nature is increasingly creating hybrid forms that fuse the man-made with the natural. These hybrids, like many of products we consume, are simultaneously compelling and toxic. Using these new life forms as inspiration, I create uncanny forms intended to suggest an animated fusion of the organic and the industrial. All of these fusions represent an artificial reality that is a hallmark of our anthropocene age. My work is an exploration of the legacy of our current lifestyle and its effects on our world.
