  • acrylic on canvas 19 x 25 x 1" The urban landscape of New York is my primary subject matter. I have always been fascinated by how socio-economic forces have transformed neighborhoods over the decades, but I try to capture a sense of permanence amidst the flux. The Limelight is a Chelsea landmark, and as such it is a symbol of permanence, but it also encapsulates the ever-changing demographics of the city: In the mid-nineteenth century, the building was an Episcopalian church; in the 1960's, it was deconsecrated and transformed into a rehab facility; then in the eighties, it was turned into a nightclub. More recently, the building has housed a mall and a gym.

  • Colored pencil 11 x 14 in. I have always been fascinated with texture. What a pleasurable challenge to create impressions of the different types of leather: rough, smooth and in-between… all while playing with light! The small bag was made by a good friend; the tiny strap-pouch and leather jerkin were made by my husband. Both men were superb craftsmen, and I wanted to replicate their fine work in this piece. It’s a way of showing just what is possible with pencil.

  • sculpture 17.25 x 12 x 7.5"
I sometimes consider human constructed space and the natural world in my art. In our daily routines we often peer out of one space to glimpse the other. Here, I investigate the "nature deficit" caused by our highly managed world and its cure. The natural world encourages us to explore and dream; to re-engage with the essence of life and beauty, bringing about peace. All materials in this artwork come from nature, but nothing is in its naturally found form. The prefabricated metal structure points to industrial constructs, protrudes into the viewer’s space, and surrounds the implied interior space of the paintings which asks the viewer to step inside.

  • oil on canvas with metal weights and angle bars 24 x 14 x 2.5" The figure walks with purpose through the storminess of life knowing that she is stronger for it. The gold and blue colors speak to a better day. Metal wires and weights wrap her environment in a manmade structure that reflects burdens and barriers by which her spirit will not be held captive.

  • acrylic & tissue on canvas with trim
    32 x 22"
I made this piece by standing in front of the canvas and tracing my body leaving out the head and limbs. This puts the focus on the torso and the reproductive organs making the identity the woman and her situation unknown. There is so much controversy about this part of a woman's body without giving consideration to who this individual is and what are her circumstances. Her body is beautiful and powerful and ultimately her own.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

A friend gave us a beautiful bouquet of flowers and I wanted to keep it forever so I made a collage of it. In this piece I continue to incorporate home sewing patterns by using the instruction sheet as background. Also included are painted papers and bits cut from one of my hand-colored woodcuts. I rearranged these familiar items in a playful way.

  • hand-colored woodcut on canvas with embroidery 19 x 26" A lifelong fascination with sewing and construction led to working in the home sewing industry for many years. This influenced my subject matter as well as my technique by incorporating sewing pattern instruction sheets and pattern tissue, pattern envelopes, fabric and stitching into the work.

  • oil 30 x 30 x 2" My paintings speak of the accumulation of life experiences. The multi-faceted nature of that which is beautiful but sad, is evidenced by heavily textured surfaces with repeated scrapings, layers and metallic pigments. The surfaces draw the viewer to the mystery of what is hidden and to the artist's internal reflections. Radiant pigments counterbalance the rough textural terrain of the emotional landscape. They afford glimpses of lightness, mystery and joy.

  • etching - drypoint, aquatint, engraving with Gampi chine collé 15 x 17 x 1"
Crab Nebula is a copper plate etching that transformed itself with the addition of dry point, engraving, and then embellishment with two different roulettes, one a wheel, and one an aquatint rocker. Cut-outs of colored gampi paper were added with the chine collé process to lend excitement and depth. The image was inspired by photographs from NASA’s amazing James Webb Telescope. I am intrigued by questions of the origins of life. Did it arrive from space on a meteor? That the Crab Nebula looks much like cell division during the development of the human embryo is fascinating.

  • photogravure etching 11 x 12" I am a visual artist working in the San Francisco Bay Area, and show my work locally and nationally. My artwork explores themes of nature in the form of animals, lands, skies and waters, always looking for the spirit within. It was Christmas Eve on the beach at Isle of Palms, SC, during the polar vortex, 19 degrees out. Everything was frozen, the sand and dunes, the water puddles, and even the wildlife. Nonetheless, we walked aside the surf, bundled in our puffy jackets and knit hats, scarves and gloves, and soaked in the ambiance, the salt water air, the sound of the waves, the hardness of the cold sand, observing the few birds that were flying around us or skittering on the beach. Upon encountering this very cold little crab, I felt so bad for it, and when I reached out to touch it, it moved. Ah, he is alive! I thought as I put him back into the waves, “there is hope”. This piece is a photogravure etching, the image made on photopolymer solar plates. It is fitting that both sun and water are involved in the process of making the plates, and contributed to the translation of the image. • Works on Paper - 2 plate color etching with natural gampi chine-colle 37.25 x 19.25 in
  • etching with chine collé 19 x 24 x 1" I am always excited to explore and conquer new printmaking techniques. In this case, the copper plate is inked, and Chine collé circles were cut out of gampi, kitakata papers, and suminagashi prints, which I made, and were glued on. Then a plum gampi backed it all. Creating and executing the process itself puts me into the zone, a meditative state, and stops time for me. My themes are the search for and expression of the spirit within, be it animals, landscapes, or spacescapes. I use color, contrast and composition to captivate and create an emotional response for the viewer.

  • solar plate etching 8 x 10" Marian has a BA in Studio Art, emphasis in printmaking, from UCSB. She continues adding to her printmaking pallet of knowledge with classes and workshops, and currently works at her home studio, and with a group of other printmakers in an Open Studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. Marian shows her prints locally and nationally, and has won awards in juried shows throughout the United States. These current works are explorations of the Solar Plate technique of etching, creating the images on grained glass plates and exposing them to photo sensitive polymer plates. Looking for the spirit within!

  • oil on panel 12 x 16" 2023   My work has been described as Contemporary Impressionism and is inspired by the beauty I see around me everyday. Sometimes the idea for a painting spontaneously presents itself as in plein air painting. I am inspired by the quiet meandering of a river, the vastness of a desert gorge, or the way afternoon sun lights the curve of an arch. Sometimes my paintings are inspired by many impressions and feelings of a place. I use technique to express relationships and create a sense of atmosphere, time and space.. • Painting-- Oil on Canvas 24 x 48 in
  • Oil 10 x 10 in. Autumn Lilies was painted during the Steamboat Art Museum Plein Air in the Yampa River Botanical Gardens in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on a chilly September morning. I had just completed a large 18” x 24” plein air painting of the lily pond and had lots of paint still on my palette. 3 hours spent analyzing the scene had burned the image of the lilies into my visual memory and I used a palette knife and the remains of the paint to express the brilliance of the aspen reflecting in the water and the gestural angles and colors of the lilies.

  • oil on panel 18 x 18" This painting is a plein air painting done on location. Cottage Garden, was painted in my father's garden in Alameda, California and won the Island Award of Merit during the Frank Bette Plein Air. My father's garden holds a sense of childhood fascination and magic for me. He is the gardener and he enjoys nurturing the plants and watching them grow. The place is filled with the wildness of the plants, the beauty of their blooms and the greens of their leaves.

  • oil 18 x 24 x .5" Entanglements is a plein air painting of cypress trees on the rocky cliffs overlooking the blustering sea at Pescadero Point in Pebble Beach, California. The trees are entwined with one another as if in a comforting embrace, shaped by the wind coming off the water. It is late afternoon and the sun is slowly setting, shining a soft, warm light, casting shadows on the land and reflections on the sea.

  • Oil on Panel 12 x 24"
Romantic Evening at Pebble Beach was painted "en plein air" on a deck overlooking the ocean, bluffs and cypress trees with Point Lobos in the distance. This is one of my favorite spots to paint. It offers something new every time depending on the time of day, the season, the clear or cloudy sky, the color of the sea, or the height of the waves. This rendition was done for the Carmel Art Festival on an evening in May. I started at about 5pm, working quickly to capture the light of the setting sun on the water.

  • Oil on Panel 18 x 18"
Springtime Seas was painted "en plein air" on the sand in Pacifica, California.  The waves were high and the sea was reflecting the bluster of the clouds and wind of the brisk, Spring Day. It was fun to watch the waves rush in and crash, leaving tendrils of foam and wet sand on the shore. Gazing out to the horizon where the sea meets the sky, purples and pinks touched the clouds, shadows lengthened and the sun kissed the edges of the trees and the tops of the waves.

  • Ink and Collage on Panel
    9 x 9"
My art is a celebration of spontaneity and the beauty that emerges from controlled chaos. Using collage with a limited color palette, I layer and then intentionally disrupt, often scrubbing under running water to reveal the unexpected. This process of destruction and revelation brings about surprises that I cherish. I then enhance these emergent images with a pop of color or drama to capture moments of vibrant contrast and harmony. Each piece evolves organically, blending intention with the unpredictable to create compositions that reflect the dynamic energy of creation itself. Through this exploration, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in the layers of my artistic journey.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photography 10 x 8" In Tales of a Consulting Detective, Sherlock Holmes said: “You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear.” I take my camera out. I may choose a subject; I may think “that would make a great picture”; I may visit a new place or one I’ve seen before. I want to observe and to present things in a way that causes the viewer to stop and observe. We have the technology to immediately capture whatever is in front of us. The challenge is for people to slow down; to question whether there is only one way to look at something; and to search for new meaning in something they may have seen before.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
