  • oil on panel 26 x 20 x 2" The spark of inspiration for this body of work came from a stay in New York City, specifically in the Chelsea neighborhood. In the painting Chelsea’s Story, the vibrating, sunlit colors on the church spires were absolutely irresistible and something I had to paint in contrast to the rest of the building in shadow. I find this an exciting approach in my work, paying respect to artists I admire who have come before such as Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler and countless masters.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic, oil, ink, & canvas collage on linen 36 x 24 x 1.5" My painting series is a profound dialogue between our planet’s crisis and my creative expression. I often ask myself what message I can give the viewer through my art. We are living in perilous times with climate change affects accelerating. As an artist I am constantly looking at the beauty of the land and oceans and inspired to create my perception in an abstract and organic way. When one sees my art, I want to convey not just a painting but a story of our planet. I look at the elements of the earth, the balance of nature, and a bird’s eye view of the stunning contrast of land that we don’t always see. While our planet is vast and different it is all one in how we can preserve it for future generations. I see inspiration in the elements of Earth and beyond in its organic and abstract nature. Many of the materials used in painting are derived from elements of the earth and I use these elements to build something abstract and yet symbolic of what our planet is made of.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • watercolor & mixed media on paper 30 x 23" I am an abstract painter, and I work primarily in watercolors with mixed media elements on paper. I’m inspired by the interplay of colors, shapes, and uneven lines, and I love the fluid, unpredictable nature of watercolor paints. I work very intuitively: I always have a starting point - a particular color combination or focal point - but then I just go wherever inspiration leads me, often surprising myself! My work is very influenced by nature, and I find myself particularly drawn to loose rounded shapes, which have become a recurring motif in much of my work. I often include botanical elements in my artwork, most of which have deep personal significance for me - reminding me of cherished people and places in my life. Painting brings me peace, balance, and joy, and it helps me maintain an even keel in our uncertain times.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • acrylic & collage on sintra panel 48 x 60 x .25" My images are primarily painted directly from life, with the subject typically casting a gaze back at the viewer. My paintings respond to themes “humanity”- my fellow women, forced migration, social justice, civil rights, natural and man-made calamities, as well as the respite of nature’s continuum. My process comes from my desire to bypass self-conscious inhibitions in the pursuit of self-expression. In 1990, I felt artistically "reborn" when I started painting with my non-dominant left hand and discovered renewed creative freedom. This, as well as using oversized brushes, gives me speed and fluidity, resulting in either as a fully representational finished painting, or the base on which to build a mixed media collage.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • Fiber 8 x 8 x 1.5 in. Symbols and their relationships to each other form the syntax of my Logic Grid. Drawing on ideas of the intersection between written language and spirituality, this piece includes passages that are meticulous hand stitched, embellished with gold leaf, and monoprinted. • Batik on silk mounted on canvas 40 x 30"
During my travels through Morocco, particularly in the enchanting city of Safi, I became captivated by the intricate beauty and cultural significance of their doors.  In Safi, doors are adorned with intricate tile work, reflecting the city's rich history as a center of pottery and ceramics. I never knew what I would discover as I rounded the corner in the Medina- the ancient walled part of the city. Through my photographs and batik paintings, I aim to capture the essence of these Moroccan doors—celebrating their visual splendor and the stories they silently hold, inviting viewers to journey with me into the heart of North African culture.

This painting was inspired by the flowers on the tropical brugmansia plant I have been overwintering for years and abstractly by images of the galaxy in which we are a part. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant community of life in my garden, my flowers invite universal questions of existence and purpose in their quest for survival, eventual senescence, and rebirth. The merging of the visions of space with the identifiable floral images by using transparent glazing between the micro and macro visions symbolizes the interconnectedness and fragility of all life, underscoring the need for open discourse to ensure universal survival.

Borrowing the lake house of a friend, and taking time away from the usual, a group of my friends gathered on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, for fun and adventure. This image of the house reflected in the lake, is the view from a kayak. The friends (not shown but having stayed together in the house) are those from high school, and the reflections may represent how time breaks up the memories, as well as how moving water, like time, breaks up the reflections. The more friends, the more broken memories may be stitched back together, especially when some go back to elementary school!

  • 4 refracted watercolors on up-cycled box with poem 6 x 16 x 11"
An old jewelry box was up-cycled - the four surfaces cleaned and 4 refracted watercolors added to correspond with each of the four lines of a poem written for the box. Sky knows the snow will cloak the resting branches Sky knows the tilting of the earth will warm the trees and bring them to life Sky knows the heat of the summer will bring the fruit ready for harvest Sky knows the falling of leaves returns the strength of the tree to the earth for the next year. Most of the other surfaces are just left as they were, to remind the user of the box's previous life. Acrylic glazing makes the box a useable item.

With the artwork Path to Enlightenment I explore the hidden wealth of information that marginalized communities contain. This painting references life in the deep sea. The deep sea exists below 200 meters and is vastly under explored. Organisms in the deep sea help to remove more than one third of the carbon dioxide produced by human activity on earth. Thus, these denizens of the deep may be instrumental in slowing down catastrophic climate change. In considering this painting as a metaphor for gleaning knowledge from underrepresented factions, which other living communities may contain knowledge vital to our survival on earth?

The exquisite landform at Sunset Cliffs in La Jolla, California, belies the unwitting sacrifices made by indigenous populations who stood in the way of conquest and "progress." Their memory transmuted onto the canvas by way of this artist's brush in an undeniable form. I contemplated this surprise for a few months before deciding to honor it, front and center.

Fire and Ice is a plea for us to recognize our profound interconnection with all life on earth, the impact of humanity's disconnection from the natural world and from each other. It offers solace and a recognition of the inherent beauty of our natural world even as It highlights the need to address this existential challenge. My intention is for Fire and Ice to be part of the great web of healing. I invite you to engage with the painting, lose yourself in its details, meditate on its meanings, and to carry those messages into your daily lives.

With all the tension in the world with aggression and war, I wanted to create an image that represented the end of the conflict. There is a feeling of exhaustion of the soldier's limp arm. There is no weapon in his open hand. The soldier has given everything for a cause, but his desire to continue has come to an end. Let the symbolism of the toga, wing of victory and laurel wreath inspire dialog and compromise to bring peace.

Seeing Land After a Long Journey is inspired by my many crossings of oceans where no land is seen for many days. There is a special feeling of excitement when experiencing the first signs of land such as twigs, birds and the distant change in the horizon. With each crossing, I was reminded about explorers like Columbus and his crew who voyaged into the unknow and had sense of excitement and relief too when they saw the first signs of land.

Primeval Caprice is a conceptual abstract interpreting the both the repetitive, predictable patterning and surprising randomness of our biological world. As there will always be more to learn about the unseen that makes up everything, this work seeks to engage in a playful conversation with surprises that will reveal themselves in time. Recognizing that we are all "made up of the same stuff," my hope is that the visual connection viewers may make with the piece will plant the seeds for this awareness in other aspects of our lives, especially those that seek to sow division.

The ocean delivers gifts of beauty in special ways. This piece is intended to invoke thoughts of unexpected tenderness via the tumbling, rustling, and tossing of the currents. After being carefully sheltered by a jagged, stone-like exterior, the gentle, shiny abalone interior holds a surprising hue. The tender pearl contained within a myriad of colorful hues displays proof that beauty can be carefully created and then surrendered from within the center of the toughest elements. Abalone Heart reminds us that we are strong and resilient. We will render the product of our worth despite the storms we experience.

The "Woven View" sculptural dress, meticulously crafted and stitched from a canvas painting, echoes the resilience and narratives of Palestinian culture. Inspired by the traditional embroidered Palestinian Thobe, it links Palestinians to their homeland and reflects cultural self-expression and identity. By cutting and stitching canvas, the dress creates a borderless composition, symbolizing the ongoing struggle and resilience of a society forced into scattered exile. It represents the unwavering determination to reclaim autonomy and pursue a brighter future, embodying the spirit of defying injustices to preserve identity and hope.

This owl is part of a series of Sentinel Figures. I mean them to be protective and fierce. I started them during the pandemic when I just wanted to protect my family and friends. This painting, Star Mass, was inspired by the poem, The Sleeping Prophet (Astronomy of Love) written by Josepha Gutelius. The materiality of this poem really spoke to me, especially the lines, "Every one of us in the plush arms of giants, crammed full of dreams and milk and star mass." (copyright Josepha Gutelius) Those lines evoke thoughts of life, death and rebirth - the fiery moment when a star flares out or when a soul's new journey begins.

On a trip to France in 2005, I was inspired by the idyllic landscape and skies to begin my Trees Leaving series. I was thinking about the threat we have become to our natural environment and remembering Magritte’s floating men in bowler hats. After the pandemic hit, I continued the series with another twist. Rather than one or lots of trees leaving, chunks of isolated areas lifted into the sky. Autumn Passing is one of these pieces. I have found it deeply gratifying to keep this series evolving with ever expanding meaning.

In depicting individuals at different ages and life stages, I engage themes of temporal change, individual vulnerability and human mortality. As I preserve a time and moment in the subject’s evolution, I acknowledge the inevitable unstoppable sea of change we ride in life. This child gaze was riveting, both vulnerable and fierce; the drawing is another in a portrait series that honors the purest of encounters with the special little humans in my life. The difficult and satisfying challenge in my portraiture is to portray some unarmed truth and in so doing to suggest our complex humanity and shared experience.

When I am upset by something I always head to my studio to bring my world to a peaceful place. Song to Ukraine was my response to the invasion of Ukraine. The sense of helplessness in world events often overwhelms me, and although I know my painting will not bring peace to Ukraine perhaps it can bring some personal peace to someone who views it. This painting was included in an exhibit in Tulsa, OK dedicated to the Ukrainian refugees who have arrived to live in our city.

Primarily rooted in abstract expressionism, my paintings reflect an evolving universe where communication is less concrete. My visual language evolved with my own memories and experiences making up the stories I needed to tell through my art. This process-oriented work explores themes of the human condition, identity, and self-reflection. It takes me back to bright spots in my memory when I felt close to starting a new chapter and the decision felt right - it felt like the punctuating marks of time of a sunrise and a sunset. The promise of a new day and the magic light that happens at both hours.

Night Music is my response to the sounds of nature I experience late at night from the deck of my cabin in the Vermont woods. The human sounds quiet down. My moment of solitude changes to reverie. I am transported by a symphony of natural sounds that fill the air--the rhythmic chorus of the frogs and crickets, the roar of rushing of water in the nearby river, and the percussive sound of wind rustling through the trees all rise up as i gaze at the stars in the dark sky above. The music is soon punctuated by the haunting calls of a pair of great horned owls. I painted Night Music to remember this magical experience.

My work focuses on exploring the concept of one's soul journey and the mythic idea of one’s daimon, or spiritual companion, as described by Plato. Guided by my daemon, I undertook a month-long residency in Ireland. While exploring the countryside, I stumbled upon "The Greenville Rookery" and was captivated by the sight of hundreds of rooks building nests. Their energy and spirit became intertwined with my artmaking, leaving a lasting impression on my subconscious.

In the realm where Veil reigns supreme, Curiosity dances like a shimmering dream. Beyond its folds, mysteries softly gleam, Inviting hearts to explore and redeem. Veil invites viewers into a realm where curiosity reigns supreme and fear of the unknown dissipates. Against a backdrop of deep blues and shimmering stars, a young girl boldly parts a veil, revealing a mysterious and enchanting sky beyond. The surrealistic elements, accentuated by subtle hints of purple undertones, evoke a sense of wonder and intrigue. Through this painting, I seek to celebrate the beauty of exploration and the courage it takes to embrace the mysteries that lie beyond the confines of our eve.

I love the variety and creative energy of the city but also the hidden places and quiet moments that appear serendipitously in my rambles around the city. My paintings often incorporate dramatic light and perspective to expose the craft and subtle colors of easily overlooked elements of the urban environment. For example, Drain Pipe, Henry Hudson Parkway is a detail of a structure I have painted many times in many lights. This small painting captures a quiet sunset moment under the parkway looking across the river.

  • alabaster on black marble base 14 x 5 x 4"
For me, creating a sculpture is sharing something deeply personal from one human being to another. In college, I was captivated when I watched a carver working on a piece of limestone. It inspired me and I soon took a chisel to a small piece of limestone. I immediately knew that carving was my artistic home. Being in tune with the stone – its color, its grain, its size – is necessary to create forms in harmony. Alabaster is an elegant material. The stone allows expression from the most delicate to the monumental, highly polished to natural texture, allowing light to penetrate and emanate from its surface. I enjoy shaping such hard materials into sensuous, flowing forms that suggest the human spirit. When I leave elements unfinished or the natural stone, the viewer is invited to complete the sculpture in their mind’s eye.

Nabeshima Nagako (1855-1941) was an elegant lady of Japanese high society from the Meiji period to the early Showa era. In April 1881 Nagako married Nabeshima Naohiro, eleventh and final daimyo of the Saga Domain in Rome, Italy, where he was performing official duties. Nagako served as secretary and chair of the Volunteer Nurses Association of the Japanese Red Cross Society from 1887 to 1936 as well as president of the Oriental Women's Association. The Full Strawberry Moon in Capricorn was my inspiration for this mystical piece. The beauty of the blue cosmos in the night sky abounds over the golden butterflies and dragonflies in my garden this summer. Often, butterflies will appear in our dreams. Seeing butterflies is an invitation to see our transformative possibilities. The Ionic Roman Columns are ancient honeyed relics from past loves -- memories we hold dear.
