  • Midsummer Joy
    Acrylic Painting

This piece is from my 'Landscapes' series, capturing memories from last summer and filled with anticipation for the next. • Oil on linen board
8 x 10" Painting is how I share my emotional connection to the rural landscape and my lifelong love of horses and hounds. I work exclusively in traditional oils and place an intense focus on “light” and “motion.” All of these – wildlife, equine sports, and landscapes – have a unique personality that I strive to capture: The stillness of water, or its lively streaming. The boisterous bounding of hounds, or the dignified stride of horse and rider. Each painting unfolds its own story in color and light—and hopefully, conveys a timeless emotion, too. My work is collected nationally. I am an artist member of the Salmagundi Club in NYC, a signature member of the American Academy of Equine Art, and an associate member of both NAWA and AIS.

  • The Lindbergh Oak
    oil on linen canvas
    Size: 16 x 20
The inspiration for my paintings is the timeless field sport of foxhunting. My process begins with shooting live hunts to capture visual resources--although as a life-time equestrian, I also call on my "bone-deep" knowledge of the subject to craft each piece. (Most of the horses and riders in my work hark from real-life hunts.) In the each painting, I aim to capture fall's saturated color with an emphasis on how light strikes my subjects and illuminates the land itself. ...a blend of light, landscape, and breathtaking sport! • oil on canvas 11 x 14 x .5" Winter is one of my favorite times to paint. I love the quiet and cold--an utter slow-down to embrace the concept of stillness. These three paintings each depict the magic of that stillness--one, a frozen afternoon scene of the hunt, and two other two, dramatic glimpses of how the darkness illuminates the holiday lights like stars. • oil on canvas 21 x 25"
Pensive is a painting of a lovely young woman. Captured sitting at the sweet threshold of adulthood. Her skin is soft and rosy. I used some metallic gold to reflect highlights in her hair. The fireplace stones around her are painted in earthy shades that match her natural coloring. Those surrounding stones, represent the comfort of hearth and home.

  • Reflections
    oil on canvas painting
    Size: 11 x 14
After years of working directly from Nature, I have turned my gaze inward, where I have discovered these magical visions. A love of Nature is still always present, and a reverence for Mother Earth abides in my soul. It is as though, during all those years of painting the view from the outside, there were these reflections growing within. Now, I wait quietly for these images to come up--sometimes, the results surprise even me.

  • Oil on canvas 21 x 25 in.   LOOK OUTSIDE The model for this painting is my beautiful granddaughter Jamie, with gorgeous naturally curly saffron colored hair. She is only 8 years old here, but she is tall, making her look older. She is unaware of her natural youthful beauty. I love the lopsided bow on the back of her shirt. Seeing the work in progress, Jamie asked me to put an owl in the painting. I painted a barn owl in flight. The owl, like her wisdom, is coming towards her, but in her innocence, she looks the other way. Pensive (Jesse)This lovely young woman sits at the sweet threshold of adulthood. • oil on canvas 20 x 24" “Just Before the Stars Come Out” speaks of the end of the day; when the moon is up, just before the stars are readily visible. That sky has the most beautiful shade of royal blue, like lapis lazuli. It only lasts for a moment but is such magic. “I often find myself painting in two’s – such as the two chairs or two lampposts. It suggests a story, and I’ve been told it’s romantic.” I work both from direct observation of nature and from imagination. My work is about color and feelings. The thrill for me in painting lies in the countless possibilities of the interjection of a single stroke of color, upon color. My art is my effort to capture a moment and preserve the uniqueness of it.

  • oil on canvas 26 x 22 x 2" Part of my Conversation Pieces series, this is a piece about the expressiveness of our hands as we converse with one another. I made up the green rings, because I liked the sound of it for the title. The Conversation,  painting suggests a conversation as one sits across the table from someone, implying a relationship between viewer and figure. There is also a connection with the viewer in the familiar habit of shared coffee. When I have my coffee, experiencing warmth on my hands, how many others are doing the same thing? What is familiar are gestures of hands--as stories are told--there is an underlying drama in the human exchange.

  • acrylic on canvas 36 x 24 x 1.5"
I like the ethereal quality of finding images and shapes within and behind other shapes. I find ways to find "safe passage" through the canvas, much as we all manuever through life and find our way. Life is like a puzzle and we all have to find a way to make all the pieces fit. Intuitively I convey feelings in a particular painting depending on my situation at the time..exploring the way shapes intersect in life and the way we someimes hide the obvious behind a mask. However I want the viewer to reach their own conclusions about what the symbolism may represent and decide what I may have been thinking.

  • acrylic on canvas 48 x 60" I like soft colors and ways to find “safe passage” through the canvas, in the same way that we all maneuver through life and find our way. I want to create a feeling of depth, with forms intertwining, like stories of individuals in a city full of people. I strive to create contrast, vibrant interaction, raised and recessed surfaces, glossy and matte combined finishes. Life is a little like a puzzle and we all have to find our way to make the pieces fit. Intuitively, I convey my feelings in a particular painting, depending on my situation at the time… exploring the way shapes intersect in life and the way we sometimes hide the obvious behind a mask.

Mixed Media: Acrylic, ink, graphite, thread, and image transfer
Size: 14 x 14 This mixed media work layers acrylic, ink, and graphite to create a soft, organic foundation that gradually builds in depth and texture. Image transfers of traditional Palestinian tatreez embroidery are embedded into the surface, ghost-like imprints that echo ancestral memory. • acrylic 21 x 17 x 1" I am currently working on a series of Strong Women, inspired by artists, writers, and other women of prominence in their fields who have demonstrated a passion for their work and a resilience to survive, sometimes against all odds.  By delving into the past as well as the present, through paintings and photography, I have been inspired to recreate those images in my own expressionistic style. • acrylic 21 x 17 x 1" I have always been interested in the stories of women who create. Whatever the medium is--poetry, fiction, non-fiction, painting, sculpture, music--wherever the muse takes them. My own artistic career has been varied, with writing fiction, non-fiction (journalism) and painting taking precedence. A passion for photography has led to an interest in expressionistic portraiture, using photographs of artists, past and present, as a springboard for my own painting. Some believe that a photograph lies as it only captures a moment but what can be read in that moment has helped me in my own search for the truth behind the image., which has led to my Strong Women series.

My work is inspired by the natural environment and made to celebrate, memorialize, and preserve living entities during the ongoing climate crisis. Coral Group 3 is one of a series of work inspired by many visits to the Mesoamerican Reef off the coast of Belize. The incredible variations of colors, textures, and designs of the corals are translated into a wet felted 3-D textile sculpture. It invites the viewer into the flow, patterns, and textures that evoke a more emotional connection to the environment and its precarious balance due to climate change impact.

    Sculpture: Wool Roving Thread
Size: 25 x 6 x 4 My art is inspired by the natural world and considers the underlying impacts of human intervention, climate change, and the lessons learned from nature. “Epiphytes 11” is part of a series of wet felted wool 3-D sculptures inspired by plants that host other living plants on their surfaces. The host provides space but not nourishment; the epiphytes are not parasitic and do no harm to their hosts. The examples of symbiotic relationships that nature showcases should be a blue print for humans to strive to achieve a balance that safeguards the earth, our host. As a fine art photographer my goal is to engage the viewer. It is not my purpose to document an event as a photojournalist would be doing, but to create a work of art that stirs an emotion. I photographed these penguins on the Falkland Islands off South America and waited until the penguins started interacting with one another before I attempting to photograph them. By waiting until the right moment, the viewer can now feel the same excitement as I experienced, when I saw these two penguins greeting each other… ready to kiss!
