watercolor 18 x 25 x 1" "Watercolor Works" explore the relationship between nature and the built environment. Watercolor has been a favorite medium of Architects, prior to the advent of photography, and now as a means of recording the topology of places [i.e., the topographic study of a given place, especially the history of a region]. As an Architect and Urban Designer, Mary Elizabeth Rusz continues in this tradition, Her paintings explore the “genius loci” – the essential quality or special nature of each selected place. Ms. Rusz is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a Resident Artist of the Salmagundi Club of New York, and a NAWA Signature Member since 2012.

photography 27 x 18" By manipulating light sources, imagery, and time, I create a sense of time travel in each frame. Through the use of vintage source material juxtaposed with modern LED lights, I create a striking tension between old and new. My work is centered around experimentation and the unexpected. The in-camera collage of the moon goddess Selene and her chariot, for example, came to life only after the 30 second exposure was complete and I played back the frame. This approach to photography allows me to push the boundaries of what's possible, creating images that are as surprising as they are beautiful and evoking a sense of wonder while transporting the viewer to another time and place.

Works on Paper 24 x 18 in. Since the pandemic, I have been incorporating masks and braille in monotypes to explore how we hide or reveal ourselves. This series, “Who Sees?”, explores the use of veils, masks, head coverings, face coverings in different cultures. How do we perceive women when they are veiled or masked? Are they disempowered or empowered? Do the masks/veils offer freedom or protection or bondage? The images that I create are multilayered, pushing us to delve deeper into this subject. “Who Sees” simultaneously draws you in and pushes you away. The First Glow Collage with digital images and watercolor Size: 3 x 2 These works were inspired by the objects I found. "Burnin' Love )" was inspired by a found matchbox in the back of a drawer and I did a series of matchbox assemblages...this being one. My mom loved Elvis and took me to every movie he was in and I thought this would be a fun use of the piece. "The First Glow" was inspired by a pile of letters I found between a couple who wrote to each other and the letters revealed the development of the relationship and this piece is about how they both began to edge more towards love and "the first glow" or blossoming of new love... Collage Fixing the Last Booboo Size: 3.5 x 2.5 x .25 "In Full Bllom with Thorns" is a series of collage love letters based on correspondence I found between two young people in the 1920s. "Fixing the Last Booboo" is part of my Mending the Earth Collage series addressing loss of species, environmental concerns. etc. All works include vintage miniature ephemera, watercolor, acrylic paint, ink, graphite, digital images, vintage bandaid, thread and whatever else is needed...enjoy! Mixed Media Painting 20 x 20 x 1.5 in. This painting is part of the "Universal Us" series based on the notion that science and reason reveal that we are truly one with the universe. All physical things derive from the same elemental building blocks, making us ... all the same. This series depicts diverse beings (some from the imagination), traveling through time, space or our minds and joining together in harmony. In this painting, a Gong Fu figure formed by genetic coding, a tree like plant, and a landscape from another world, are separately and jointly ruled over by a symbolic law of gravity. Guanine Molecular Dancingacrylic, acrylic pen , paper collage on canvasSize: 28 x 28I am a biochemical engineer turned artist. Using fast-drying acrylics, unconventional tools, and collage, I embrace spontaneity and imperfection. My paintings evolve intuitively, revealing textured layers and organic meaning while exploring interconnectedness across science, cultures, disciplines, and inner and outer worlds. This piece reflects how the fundamental structures of life take on fluid, rhythmic forms. The Guanine (G) molecule—a nucleotide of DNA—transforms into a dynamic dancer, its movement inspired by my own dance practice and echoing the invisible forces that shape all living beings. Each pink dot marks an atom within guanine’s structure, labeled as C (carbon), H (hydrogen), N (nitrogen), or O (oxygen), reflecting its true formula, C₅H₅N₅O. Flowing organic elements, scientific notations, and ethereal light intertwine, bridging the molecular and the cosmic. Like the series it belongs to, this painting dissolves boundaries—between science and art, structure and spontaneity—to celebrate the shared essence of existence.

Coral Cockatoos Charcoal and Acrylic on Panel Size: 6 x 6" Phantasmagoria is my original art technique, developed to create haunting, ethereal visuals, similar to daguerreotypes (an early form of photography where the image was made on a polished silver-coated copper plate). By combining the deep, matte tones of charcoal with the iridescent shimmer of interference acrylics, I craft images that blend nostalgic depth with modern luminescence. Charcoal creates rich contrasts and textures, while thin layers of interference acrylics add a color-shifting glow, evoking a ghostly movement. Named after 19th-century optical spectacles, Phantasmagoria produces dreamlike, timeless artworks that fuse sharp detail with otherworldly light. digitally manipulated photography 25 x 19 x 1" Our hands are the most expressive part of our bodies, after the eyes. Being intensely emotional, I find it very instrumental in communicating with people. You can tell a lot about a person by how they move their hands while talking. In this photo collage, I depicted my hands flying all over the place, akin to the conductor's hand movement, creating a dynamic and vibrant image.

digital drawing on Wacom tablet using digital brushes: watercolor, charcoal, & pastels 15 x 20 x 1" Moonlit Magnolia represents one of my mental places where I go to do my profound thinking. The unobstructed watercolor background of teal creates this velvety feel that is almost tangible. The magnolia tree with its twisted roots is a metaphor for the thoughts on which the dog is resting (with the dog being a self-portrait) whereas the crescent moon is the obvious source of light that can be translated as hopes and dreams. Photography 12 x 8 in. With this photograph, I'm celebrating the Unique. I've been always drawn to the out-of-the-ordinary. The Satsuma Mandarin is a great example of one of my unusual findings. Despite the flower-like qualities of the hand it simply serves as a pedestal to support the main subject. The fruit is the hero of this picture. It's a portrait of individuality.

metal print with AI-assisted image 20 x 20" The Trust In Me series came about as a motivating manifestation. Like all artists, I go through the phases of extreme self-criticism. Moving to another city, to another country, you can’t help but start comparing yourself to others. You think you are not doing enough. You are not enough. In order to create freely you need to be connected with yourself. Spending more time alone and reflecting helps to hear that inner voice. Only YOU can know what to do next. I named each work in honor of women who in my opinion changed or magically touched the art world, As part of a series this work represents J. K. Rowling.

Mixed Media Blue Girl Size: 30 x 24 These two paintings are part of a series of Blue Paintings I have done over the years. So this is not really a “Blue Period” a la Picasso, but a sustained interest in returning to blue over the years, from time to time. “Blue Girl” can be said to sustain one reading of the idea of blue, as in waking up with the blues, and going to bed that way too. “Blues Bird” refers to the idea of blue in its “blues music” musical context, which can include joy and vitality. “Blues Bird” also expresses my interest in texture and mixed media in my paintings, although I also think “Blue Girl” is also a painting that includes a sense of texture. Morning Stretch 18 x 12 x in. I’m in love with the line. The language of line, delivered with a crashing landing on a page or the gentlest calligraphic curve, or a collection of marks, exudes a power and a sense of storytelling that is beautiful to me. It transcends the verbal communication. Drawing the human figure in line, connects me to my models and the stories that they tell through their poses. It is a collaboration- the model, the artist, the line. Line educates me, supports me, and excites me. It is the vehicle that tells my stories. acrylic, handmade paper, paper, graphite, pastel 16.6 x 20" Drawing from the live figure is an imperative part of my practice. The beauty of the female human figure never waivers. Using a figure drawing, drawn from life, an environment was created in the spirit of Matisse's odalisques. Her gaze is confident, yet sultry; exuding her confidence and power.

This is Why I Love the Beach: French convo, Playa Picasso, NIcemonotype with pastelSize: 9 x 12.75The sea calls me. I am so happy while there, fascinated by its power and mystique, and calmed by the soothing, rhythmic sound of the waves- but also equally fascinated by the other beach goers. My recent body of work explores my personal family history and its love of the beach in all seasons, and my own fascination by the random beach bodies that I encounter, the world over, at any beach, in any season. I am currently making monotypes, derivative of my beach sketchbooks. This piece, from a drawing of two, in your face French divas, on the Coté D'Azure.

The Dancecarrara marble sculptureSize: 25 x 30 x 6The Italians call marble the "tears of the gods". It is an elegant material to sculpt, as it allows expression from the most delicate to the monumental, highly polished to natural texture, allowing light to penetrate and emanate from its surface. I enjoy shaping such a hard material as marble into sensuous, flowing forms that suggest the human spirit. When I leave elements unfinished or the natural stone the viewer is invited to complete sculpture in their mind’s eye.

Painting View of the Pond Through the Reeds 20 x 16 x 1 in. I was on a plein air painting trip to the Brandywine area, and was inspired by the landscape of a beautiful Delaware park, which had a river running through it, and ponds with native grasses and flowers. It was a hot, humid summer day, but the vibrant green of the grasses and reeds beside the water were worth studying. There always seems to be joy in the way wild vegetation grows next to water. I wanted to communicate that sensation. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

Anhinga at SunsetNikon D850, 500mm lens; photo on archival paperSize: 14 x 11My goal, in photographing wildlife, is to seek interesting poses of subjects viewers may not ordinarily see. This Anhinga, with his tail feathers positioned between two branches, makes the image unique. The yellow background was not manipulated. I photographed the Anhinga with my Nikon D850 camera at sunset with a 500mm lens and aperture of 5.6, which captured the sky's hue. The photo is printed on cold-pressed, fine art archival paper.

photography/digitally enhanced 24 x 18 x .5" Inspiration for this art piece comes from the poetry of Lisa Hammond. Her poem, titled “Three Fish” is of three very different fish - a wood carving, a bream, and a necklace pendant. Her poetry speaks to the world of nature, which aligns with my wildlife photography. While still figurative, this is the first photo I have exhibited that is not a living, breathing subject. I purposely developed each fish at differing exposures to express their individuality.

acrylic on thin birch board 16 x 12 x .125"I wanted to branch out into less traditional portraiture, and conceived of the idea of modern iconography—portraying everyday people as saints and mythological characters. I loved the reference model's beautiful silhouette and sidelong look, and decided to add a halo and name her Saint Side-Eye to convey a sense of mystery and distinction.
