Judith CarlinFreehand Digital Painting, Pigment Print on CanvasSize: 32 x 40" "My Worlds Are Colliding" is a freehand digital painting which means every stroke is painted by me as if I were painting with a brush on canvas. This painting is a metaphor for the public, private and secret lives we each have. We try very hard to keep these worlds compartmentalized. No matter how hard we try, many times our worlds will collide with each other and cause chaos within our lives and others. "My Worlds Are Colliding" addresses our currently polarized society. Not only our individual public, private and secret worlds crashing into each other but the worlds of others being revealed to us can be life changing and dangerous. Digital 12 x 15 in. In my freehand, digital painting, Home Sweet Home, we see a young woman living in her car with all her worldly possessions. Her left eye is heavily bruised and almost swollen shut. Whether this is from an accident or someone hitting her is unknown. Homelessness is a pressing problem in America. Homeless women are particularly vulnerable. It is estimated that a large percentage of families are only one missed paycheck from becoming homeless. People living in their cars are one of the fastest growing homeless populations.

freehand digital painting, archival ink on canvas 24 x 30 x 1.5" “Never Again” is my response to Roe v. Wade being overturned. In this painting we see a scared, young woman being escorted to a clinic. One of the escorts holds up a hanger with the bottom wire twisted to read “never again.” My fear is that abortions will once again become deadly. In reality, this only affects lower income girls and women as those more financially secure will just go to other states or countries.

Sunlight on the New Mexico Mountains Watercolor Size: 8 x 8 Framed Size: 10 x 10 My submitted painting, “Sunlight on the New Mexico Mountains,” is part of a series titled 100’ from Home. While tending to my garden or enjoying moments with my dog in the yard, I began to notice the breathtaking views that surrounded me. Unfortunately, many of these open landscapes are disappearing. My gouache painting series aims to capture these precious scenes before they are lost to urban development or the impacts of climate change. Through this work, I hope to express my deep connection to nature and share it with viewers, embodying the concept of biophilia—the human connection to the natural world. My creative process is rooted in personal experience; I exclusively use my own photographs that I take within 100 feet of my home. The reference photograph serves as a loose guide, allowing me to explore the essence of the landscape rather than sticking strictly to details. I work with traditional gouache paint on Ampersand Clayboard cradled panels, a choice I made after developing an allergy to acrylic paint. This medium provides a velvety, soft, and atmospheric quality, perfectly reflecting the beauty of the high mountain desert of New Mexico. oil on canvas 19 x 25 x 1" As I sat on a Chelsea Pier in New York City, a young woman stood at the rail, watching. The vision inspired the original ink drawing on 11"x14" watercolor paper. "The River" is part of my latest series translating my small plein air drawings into larger oil paintings. This painting is 18"x24" (plus 1" frame).

photography/digitally manipulated 16 x 24 x 1" On the surface, the digital images in Judy's Under the Big Top portfolio portray circus troupes as glamorous, athletic, and cooperative. Further thought reveals deeper truths, such as commitment to disciplined practice produces impressive results. In "En Garde!" a clown models resilience despite adversity and imperfection, a way to grow from failure and heal through self-recognition and laughter. Although a clown may be ill-prepared and quivering with fear, he still bravely shows up.

Oil on Aluminum 21.5 x 31.5 x 1"I love watching the waves rush toward me when I stand at the water’s edge. I love to feel their cold hit my feet and pull the sand from my wiggling toes. On a hot summer day, I love laying on my back in the ocean and riding the swell of a broken wave. The water is a balm for my fiery skin. When the waves recede, I see the sparkle of sunlight on my body and feel like a child again. With a sense of playfulness and lightness, I am transformed.

oil 26 x 22.25 x 1.5" I am inspired by the figure and the actions of the figure. Talking on a cell phone is truly one of the easiest actions to observe and provides a picture that hopefully everyone can relate to. People are very focused on their phones, so, drawing or painting that situation gives you multiple artistic areas to contemplate.

Mixed Media Trichaptum Fungi (Trichaptum abietinum) 40 x 30 in. My work reflects my close observation of nature. I attempt to capture its endless fluctuations: shifting light, variegated colors, constant movement, evolving forms, evidence of resident fauna. Working abstractly, yet botanically accurately, I surprise viewers with unusual views revealing the complex design inherent in often unnoticed life. By sharing the beauty of humble local ecosystems, I hope to induce viewers to look deeply. I am exquisitely aware that, though nature is our collective home, human activity has caused irreparable losses of habitat, resource, and species. My work, thus, aims to respond to ecologists’ call for native ecosystem rediscovery and restoration. oil & oil sticks on Oleo paper 19.75 x 29.75 x .1" Hawaii is such an enveloping place, every island is unique. The dichotomy of the old and the constant evolution of these volcanic islands inspires. This view struck me as so American, of a time when America was new. The beauty of the early morning mist and the light illuminating the cows freely roaming around ancient giant trees was an amazing sight. The colors were so true. It kind of reminded me of the scenes painted by the Hudson River School of mid-19th-century American painters. Very romantic, moody and idyllic. The use of oil paints on oleo paper gave me the ability to give dimension to this amazing and unique landscape. Feeling it as I painted!

gouache & Carand'Ache NeoColorsII on oleo paper 14.625 x 18.62 x 1.5" Having a vantage point away from people can give you the opportunity to really "study and see" the life happening around you. As an artist, this is very important and inspirational. The medium, gouache and Carand'Ache ll Aquarelle colors, gives an immediate opportunity to express and create the artwork. It lays down fast and dries quickly. I hope this piece, "Sunday morning at Track5, Coffee Shop", draws you in to really observe the painting. The "Characters" enjoying coffee under the moody warm lighting, seeming to create a movie like set. The fun of being so close, yet in your own space. Sometimes having nothing more in common than that morning brew & conversation. Enjoy!

Sculpture 13 x 13 x 10" Taking a raw block of Sylacauca marble and beginning to carve, not knowing the beginning or the end, is the most intuitive, exciting way I sculpt. If the design is already planned, it simply becomes process to get to the final form. But, direct carving, with no preconceived idea, is strictly an exploratory and intuitive approach to sculpting. The raw stone for Blanca, already triangular in shape, became a form with movement, where the inner void becomes as important as the outer form.

digital archival photograph sublimated to aluminum 16 x 24 x 1" Tibet first captured my imagination many years ago when I was in art school. I was finally able to make the journey to Tibet on a photographic odyssey as part of a life celebration for my 50th birthday. Even though there are very few elements in this picture, I see a complex emotional range. It is a fleeting moment that somehow has permanence and an endurance, even in a religion based on impermanence. The scene that is about to unfold might be almost exactly as it would have been six hundred years ago. But will it be the same six hundred years from now? The folded robes are silent. They contain both presence and absence. The answer is unknown.

Photography 12 x 12 in. Love Joy Art! Dave Lovejoy’s studio says it all. He loves the ‘patina of use’ of LA in the 30s & 40s. His office in a 1905 abandoned bank building has gold lettering that could be leftover by a Sam Spade of art. Eclectic spheres & globes, 18 paintbrushes arrayed, vintage molding meandering, an assemblage of 88 magnifying glasses is a living chandelier. The studio flows into the Last Bookstore (in the same antique building), a magical labyrinth of melting bookcases & flying books in Downtown LA for visiting booklovers. Imagination & inspiration. A ‘thingmaker’ meets me, a photographmaker. Voila!

Collage 12 x 14" My collages are intimate in size and are meant to be experienced close up. They may be narrative or suggestive. I relish the spontaneous process of instinctive play without knowing whether it will result in wonderful visual chaos or composed lyrical poetry. Collage is perfect for my creative process. “Hochhauser’s Walk” is a map of a personal journey, both literal and figurative. Although it is small, I have incorporated tearing, gluing, painting, stamping, scratching and mark-making to convey my experience, and perhaps to trigger memories or resonate with the viewer's own journeys.

Bolt Bronze Sculpture Size: 11 x 15 x 4 Living in Kentucky, where horses are the great charm of the countryside, I am inspired by their friendliness, curiosity, grace. and beauty. Quite often, while stopped in traffic along the road, the horses come to stand by the fence and commune with the drivers. One such horse, grabbed my fancy and, the next thing I knew, he began to appear in the slab of black Tennessee marble I was working. A few years later, I converted the stone sculpture into a bronze edition of 9. A much larger version of the horse resides in a private collection in Kentucky. Although not a typical, traditional horse sculptor, I love to capture the abstract essence of the horse. sculpture 14 x 15 x 7" I created Healing Hands after I had gone through two years of grueling, intense, hand therapy to regain the use of my left hand, which I almost severed in a near-fatal studio accident. The original sculpture intuitively flowed from the chisels. It was a spiritual experience to have the piece evolve without hesitation. The original marble sculpture was cut in a pristine white, Colorado Yule Marble. I have cast bronzes of the original sculpture, which is owned by my brilliant hand therapist-- who healed the hand and the spirit at the same time. It is a possibility that this piece will be cast large-scale in the future. Today I am still carving one-of-a-kind stone pieces--two which have been commissioned as five-foot bronzes. A third twelve foot bronze is being developed and will go to production in the next few months. The three sculptures will be the focal points for a sculpture garden in Knoxville, Tennessee. They are due for installation in 2025. Having just reached the ripe old age of 81, I am happy to say that I am still able to follow my passion. Each day is most definitely a gift! Portuguese Marble Sculpture 52 x 18 x 12" Freyr is a large vertical sculptures where forms criss-cross and stack to give volume without extreme weight. It is more easily moved and would work well in an entryway or large interior. A huge drawback to working in stone is dealing with the weight and the movability of the pieces. This was designed with that in mind. The interior form of Freyr (a protective force) actually moves within the outer form. Colorado Yule Marble 36 x 12 x 7" Stalwart is one of my many horses produced in the land of horses -- Lexington, Kentucky. My horses are nor literal interpretations of the horse, but suggest an abstract interpretation. Stalwart represents strength, stability and as I finished him, I felt as if I were actually grooming my horse for the next race. He became very personal. StillnessAcrylic and pigment on gallery wrapped canvasSize: 24 x 18Stillness invites viewers into a serene and meditative experience through its subtle yet powerful interplay of texture and form. The monochromatic surface, rendered in gentle off-white tones, offers a quiet canvas where tactile horizontal ridges ripple across the work like soft waves of calm. These uneven, parallel lines draw attention to the physical presence of the paint itself, revealing the beauty that emerges when simplicity and patience guide creation. This minimalist composition becomes a space for reflection, encouraging a pause in the rhythm of daily life and an embrace of quiet wonder. It celebrates the power found in restraint and the meditative process of making, inviting contemplation on how stillness can deepen our awareness and awaken a sense of peace. The artwork’s gentle textures and subtle variations create a rhythmic harmony that resonates beyond the canvas, reminding us that profound meaning often lies within gentle, unspoken moments.
