Portuguese Marble Sculpture 52 x 18 x 12" Freyr is a large vertical sculptures where forms criss-cross and stack to give volume without extreme weight. It is more easily moved and would work well in an entryway or large interior. A huge drawback to working in stone is dealing with the weight and the movability of the pieces. This was designed with that in mind. The interior form of Freyr (a protective force) actually moves within the outer form. Colorado Yule Marble 36 x 12 x 7" Stalwart is one of my many horses produced in the land of horses -- Lexington, Kentucky. My horses are nor literal interpretations of the horse, but suggest an abstract interpretation. Stalwart represents strength, stability and as I finished him, I felt as if I were actually grooming my horse for the next race. He became very personal. mixed media 14 x 17.5" My mother just died and the dogs in my mind were visiting. To say she is alright. It is made with acrylic paint fabric and mosaics. Dogs are all around my neighborhood so they become the animal inspiration. And heaven is a beautiful place with mosaics all around. I miss her very much and hope she safe.

watercolor 11 x 14" I enjoy working in many mediums and have fun while engaged in the creative process. I rarely if ever have an end picture in mind, as I mostly play and experiment in a very fluid way. I enjoy layering, trying new techniques and tools, and using more than one medium in a piece. I step away often to assess my next move and try to stop when it 'feels done'. It's often a very happy surprise, but sometimes the piece goes into the 'someday' pile/file for a future painting or collage. My inspiration comes from nature, color, new art supplies and processes, and language. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

watercolor on Yupo 20 x 19" Recently I have been working on Yupo paper with my watercolors. This piece is a still life from my flower garden. I like the fluid effects that happen on the yupo substrate and the challenge to control the direction of the painting. It can be abstract in feel but still very realistic to the viewer.

Painting Summer Lovers 15 x 19 x 1 in. “Creating art is a vehicle through which I can more easily communicate my impressions of the world. digital painting 14 x 28 x 1" I have always loved creating landscapes, and whether I am painting with actual paint or with my computer, I quickly and happily become lost in the process. Also, always evident with either method is my intense love of color. Catskill Morning is born of my memories of family journeys through the beautiful Catskill mountains when I was a child.

watercolor & gouache on polypropylene 27.25 x 33.25 x 1.5" The Italian word “capriccio” has various definitions: playful; whimsical; fanciful notion; an instrumental free form composition, usually lively in tempo and brilliant in style; characterized by unpredictable, sudden turns and changes were my muses for this painting. If ever a word described the Italian spirit, this is that word. It is the word that inspired the playground of the Roman emperors – Capri. “Capriccio” expresses all the definitions simultaneously. Using only the elements of art in a non-narrative composition afforded me the opportunity to take a capriciously joyful approach in my artistic interpretation of the word and the joyful Italian spirit and overall approach to life.

yarn, excavated doll shards, black porcelain paint 30 x 28" On this hand knitted tapestry representing childhood and innocence is the tragic theme of brokenness and loss. Gun violence is the leading cause of childhood death. For every hundred thousand children, five are lost to gun violence as recorded by the CDC. As a therapist, I’ve seen their pain, fear, and the silent screams for help. In my art I seek to make their voices heard. I created Our Lost Children from raw wool, excavated doll shards, paint and tears, hoping all who see it will act to keep our children safe and break the cycle of childhood deaths by gun violence.

Acrylic 20 x 20" In my painting, Birches and Lace, I explore memories and perceptions of the natural world through the colorful, gestural use of shapes and lines to mimic organic forms found in nature. The negative spaces between the trees take on just as much importance as the positive subject matter. While not true to life, the palette creates a conversation between cool and warm tones.

Acrylic 40 X 30" Burnt Orange Woods was created as part of a series that I titled Perspective. The drawing elements and color fields in the negative spaces between the trees are used to create depth. The nontraditional colors create a dialogue when placed next to each other. I relied on my own experiences of hiking several trails throughout the United States to convey a universal sense of place.

acrylic 30 x 40" Karlene explores memories and perceptions of the natural world through her colorful, gestural paintings. She uses shapes and lines to mimic organic forms found in nature, playing with positive and negative space and layers of paint to build up a sense of atmosphere on a flat plane. Her work is also fueled by bursts of color. While not true to life, her palette creates a conversation between cool and warm tones and serves to energize her compositions.

mixed media on canvas 36 x 46" Karlene explores memories and perceptions of the natural world through her colorful, gestural paintings. “McConnell uses her experiences of the real world to recreate the joy, excitement and even the magic of a walk in the woods. When she is “in the zone” she is exploring the interaction of vibrant colors or making simple marks that mimic nature and are pleasing to look at. Harking back to Matisse, we hear a similar theme: Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the diverse elements at the painter’s command to express his feelings. This is about as close to a manifesto that we can imagine for the wild beasts (Les Fauves never wrote one) and it applies to McConnell as well. This kind of painter makes no effort to desaturate or blend but allows pure color, even discordant ones, to ring out at a maximum intensity.” - Dr. James Murphy - original Art Director Atlantic Center for the Arts & former Art Professor Florida State University.

finger painted oil on canvas 24 x 30 x 1.78" My art explores the relationship between perception and imagination. Created as an antidote to stress, I use visually calming forms and optical illusions to imbue a sense of wonder. I work in various media. In my upcycled sculptures, I transform mass-produced consumer goods into organic forms that float at the ceiling, cascade down the wall, and glow in the dark. I also communicate through high-tone and gilded paintings, luminous ink paintings, and fractal-like photographic designs in limited editions of five that are dye-sublimated onto aluminum panels. I often hide tiny positive messages in my art that range from large-scale to miniature, many of which play with light. Through my work, I create opportunities that invite tuning into the present moment and letting everything else disappear as curiosity takes over because everyone benefits when they experience a dopamine release. This feel-good chemical has the power to shift perspective and positively impact the world. I play with perception and imagination through the Fauvist lens in my submitted work. Native color is replaced with tonal cousins, sharing a version of reality that exists in my mind. I love the grandeur of the mountainscape and allow my interpretation to guide my work. This painting has the word “LOVE” snuggled within it as a talisman for what we all want to find within our hearts when we experience the natural world, especially in Winter. May my frozen dreams and abstract realities call Winter’s dual nature to mind and ignite your curiosity! acrylic painting 40 x 30 x 1.5" My freehand, hard-edged abstract, sculptural form floats within a harmonized color field. I created my color pair with techniques used by figurative painters to give atmospheric perspective to landscapes and depth to objects in space. Can you sense the depth? Sentinel is a regal abstraction, placidly on guard. My signature tiny golden heart rests on the underside of the canvas, a talisman of joy, hope, and love. I varnished her with a matte finish. A minimal white wooden float frame and a small portal to view the golden heart can be added to this painting.

Oil 10 x 10" There’s no denying the allure of fresh warm peaches with their soft fuzz and intoxicating summer scent. These Georgia beauties were brought home as a special treat by my daughter. She had stopped at a fruit stand outside of Savannah, which just happened to be in the parking lot of a “gentlemen’s” club named Temptations. We had a good laugh when I chose the title, Summer Temptations, a little inside joke between us.

acrylic 12 x 12" My paintings explore texture and, gesture, and are about the memories and emotions that are evoked in the process. They suggest a sense of place, of peace, of elements of the natural world. Inspiration comes from everywhere: feelings, poetry, nature, things that take my breath away. These are tucked away into a kind of reservoir, echoes of them surfacing later in my paintings Starting with random marks and responding to them intuitively, I approach them with a sense of play, experimentation and an exploration of the materials, as much as an emotional response to the evolving painting. I work in acrylics, encaustics and oil & cold wax and mixed media, all involved with building layers and working back into them, scraping and dissolving to expose what lies beneath. For me, it is all about the process: finding a sense of order, of refuge and letting go; becoming immersed in the moment and the physicality of engaging the surface. A visual energy emerges flowing through the layers, creating depth and an intimate space that invites exploration. relief print with chine-colle 11 x 14 x 1" This is a view from my studio building, using real and imagined colors. I constructed the collagraph plate with multiple layers of cardboard and string. Initially conceived as a print in black and white, I am inspired to add color using chine-colle. In this piece I roll out the ink first, apply glue to each piece of colored paper, then place the individual papers colored side down on the inked plate. The print paper is then placed on top of the plate, where the ink will now transfer to the colored papers, and the colored papers will adhere to the print paper. I hand rub, and finally pull the print from the plate. I am having so much fun playing with a variety of color combinations!

oil on canvas 20 x 16 x 2" I am a Philadelphia based artist who loves color! I use painting to express my interest in people and how they fit into their environment. Everyday experiences interest me the most. In this oil painting, I focus on 3 brothers enjoying the fading afternoon sun of the spring shoreline. They are comfortable being together, yet each of the boys are lost in their own world. My process begins by taking a photo with my phone, and rendering the lines, shapes and values with white and black charcoal on gray paper. Next, I choose the size of the canvas and compose the piece using yellow ochre watercolor. Finally, I use a variety of brushes to apply layers of oil paint to complete the image.

printmaking 8 x 8" Universe Series uses a variety of animals to represent life as they ponder the latest scientific theories concerning the Universe. These playful explorations look toward space and at humankinds' reaction to it. Who hasn't wondered what it would be like to live in the caves of Mars, thought about when we might be drawn into the black hole that keeps our galaxy together, or seen heaven when we look up at the stars? This work of art is a serigraph, or more commonly known as a silkscreen print. It is a hand-made, small-edition print, that uses my graphite drawing as its basis, and is an original work of art. What makes serigraphy the perfect printmaking method for my art, is I can retain areas of pure white paper, capture the tonality of my drawings, and place blocks of intense color that either overlaps part of the image, or lightly kisses the edge of image. Serigraphy is a modern printmaking method with a very old history. Stencil-based, hand-made prints originated during the tenth century in China. They made their first appearance in Europe around the 18th century and are used throughout the world today. This mode of printmaking has evolved over time, so that Modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, Pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Peter Max, and Contemporary artists including me, have found it an attractive medium for the creation of fine art. Universe Series - Saturn Siesta Serigraphy or silkscreen print Size of piece: 8 x 8 Size of piece framed: 15 x 15 Universe Series uses a variety of animals to represent life as they ponder the latest scientific theories concerning the Universe. These playful explorations look towards Space and at humankind's reaction to it. The three serigraphs I submitted for this exhibition are titled Saturn Siesta, Rabbit Hole, and Milky Way. Saturn Siesta invites us to think about what makes up the rings of Saturn while Rabbit Hole takes a look at the black hole that keeps our galaxy together. Milky Way asks us why we see heaven when we look up at the stars? Serigraphy. is a modern printmaking method with a very old history. serigraph (silkscreen) 10 x 8" Landscape series is composed of two serigraphs that deal with private and public worlds. Inner Landscape demonstrates how little we really know about another living being's inner life. It can be healthy and growing like a forest, as in this artwork, or something entirely different. Outer Landscape demonstrates how much we can guess about another living being just from their outer appearances. That being said, appearances can be deceiving and there may be important aspects of personality that are hidden from view.

intaglio/charcoal print on paper 21 x 21 x 1" Balance, from my Pair Series, was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's ink drawing, Vitruvian Man, and my desire to include the other half of humanity into the conversation. In my intaglio/charcoal print, I add a female figure, to express the equality, and complementary nature of the sexes. While Leonardo's circle is implied, it is not shown but replaced by a star to symbolize the connection between everything in the Universe. FYI: It maybe of it interest to others that Leonardo had been inspired by the writings of Vitruvius, an ancient Roman architect.
