  • watercolor painting on Khadi paper with acrylic pen & collage 20 x 16 x 1" I am an abstract painter, and I work primarily in watercolors with mixed media elements. I’m inspired by the interplay of colors, shapes, and uneven lines, and I love the fluid, unpredictable nature of watercolor paints. I work very intuitively: I always have a starting point - a particular color combination or focal point - but then I just go wherever inspiration leads me. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • encaustic on wool, silk, paper, & cotton 5.5 x 9.5 x 1" Dot Bergen is fascinated by processes that reference the passage of time; nature profoundly influences her work. She has always been captivated with mineralization, fossilization, weathering and erosion. There is beauty and power in change, but there is also a sense of vulnerability, the idea that nothing is constant. "Creating a temporal landscape of an ongoing process encourages the viewer to contemplate the past conditions contributing to this portrayal." In Dead Man's Party, Dot explores the fragility of the human relationship with the ever-changing natural world. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil 16 x 20 x 1" I'm often drawn to working in the tradition of still life. I enjoy building a controlled environment, playing with contrasting shapes and colors, working with reflections and transparencies, and creating a sense of drama with light. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on wood with graphite 18 x 16" Acrylic layering on wood with graphic line work. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • digital drawing on Wacom tablet using digital brushes: watercolor, charcoal, & pastels 15 x 20 x 1" Moonlit Magnolia represents one of my mental places where I go to do my profound thinking. The unobstructed watercolor background of teal creates this velvety feel that is almost tangible. The magnolia tree with its twisted roots is a metaphor for the thoughts on which the dog is resting (with the dog being a self-portrait) whereas the crescent moon is the obvious source of light that can be translated as hopes and dreams. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on gallery wrapped canvas 20 x 20" I am quite taken by trees in nature. I live in Maine for most of the seasons and am always finding new excitement in paintingmy surroundings. Birch trees are my laborite because they have fascinating patterns in the bark and branches. My career as a textile designer has influenced how I see the patterns. My other strength is color. I am experimenting in values rather than chroma and find it has made my art more exciting. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 12 x 12" My paintings refer to the mystery, power and spirituality of the landscape. They speak of hope and optimism, while they also recognize humankind's insignificance in relation to the universe. The work is not about realistic forms but rather my response to what I see —the colors, shapes and atmosphere. My intention is to reflect nature's timeless cycle, the ephemeral sense of life, and the question of what else might be. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • punch needle embroidery 30 x 24 x 1" In an effort to reject the insinuations often thrust upon the female form, this work presents a highly rigid and resolutely geometric portrait of a woman, without a stroke of curvature. This work's depiction of a fractured facial profile aims to highlight the oftentimes nonexistent boundary between one’s ability to feel beautiful and overt sexualization when externally perceived. By abstracting identifiable features and removing individual characteristics to varying degrees, this work re-examines our perceptions on “appropriateness”. My mission is to create broadly familiar subjects that reflect femininity as part of the Whole rather than the Individual. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media painting using collaged hand painted papers 22 x 22 x 2" Excited by the way colorful shapes fit together, how a line on the surface can cause movement, the surprise of embedded bits of pattern -- my work is playful and energetic. I am almost completely concerned with how the elements of art come together to make a strong composition. Sometimes compared to aerial views, puzzle pieces locked together and urban grids, in my work, these are qualities sensed rather than seen. While the result is abstract, every piece begins with a reference – a concrete memory, sensation or even a photograph of a place I have traveled. For viewers, the experience is about creativity and curiosity, moving in close to see the layers, and asking themselves “what is this?” Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • ware-soluble media, India ink, acrylic paint, & acrylic paint marker 24 x 24 x 2.5" Other Dimensions is in my 'Celestial' series. Outerspace, clouds, floating, weightlessness, ... I feel like I'm looking into other dimensions or other worlds places I want to go and see. Where will it take me? With many layers of complex and pure color receding and coming forward. I especially enjoy beginning with water-soluble mark making media of various line qualities. Using my favorite brush, I move colored India Ink around on the canvas to create lovely grays. I then add acrylic paint as I respond to what is happening on the surface. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • fine pencil drawing and watercolor on Arches Watercolor paper 12 x 18 x 1" Drawing and painting watercolors is something I have loved to do. As an artist, I work hard to develop paintings that speak both to me and to others. Making art creates an opportunity evoke emotions and feelings and to transport the viewer to another “place”. For the last 20 years, I have been working with watercolors. The beauty of the medium is its luminosity and transparency. There are many subjects and themes I have been interested in over the years. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media 20 x 20 x 1" Playfulness is a sneaky way to allow the audience the freedom to enjoy new ideas. I use humor and whimsy to create unexpected associations that people can recognize. Bringing their own unique experiences and personal connections to my art, they are delighted when they feel a particular artwork is speaking directly to them. The story is something they can personally relate to, just like I do. I particularly enjoy the look in the eyes of an observer when they realize they are seeing a familiar tale, something from their own life, sometimes even a memory. There is excited screaming and laughing and so much thanks. I get a lot of hugs! Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • painted steel wire on wood panel 17 x 12 x 1" My art is about closeness and the play of tensions that exist in our relationships. It has always centered the human figure, growing from single-figure studies to the portrayal of interacting groups. It directly reflects how deeply a desire for closeness has always existed in me. My parents suffered extreme early traumas, leaving them fearful of exploitation by strangers and uncomfortable in communities. As a result, I am extremely sensitive to the damage to people, communities, and nations when we are not able to become close and find trust through recognition of our similarities and negotiation of our differences. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • digital painting as archival pigment ink laminated on wood box mount with interactive narrative: https://frogpledge.com 13 x 13 x .1" FROG PLEDGE is an interactive painting digitally created in layers using Photoshop software with a custom coded software that allows all to interact with its eight layered audio/visual PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FROG. It was created in 2008 in the year of the frog (Chinese calendar) It is a tribute to both America and the frog, an animal that isi now an endangered species. • acrylic paint 14 x 11 x 1" Inspired by the French artists Chardin and Oudry 's raw meat paintings, this painting employs a trompe-loeil technique. The leg of lamb is also symbolic. It is created to remind the viewers the cruelty of life,It also sends the message of Memento Mori. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic & gel medium on canvas 20 x 20 x 1.5" The initial inspiration for this painting came from some of the beautiful images seen from the James Webb Space Telescope. My goal was to mix texture and colors to highlight the counterplay of the darkness of space and the amazing light and colors captured in those images. The texture creates a sense of motion with the focal point representing the revelation of a distant source of light. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic and oil pastel on canvas 16 x 20" This piece is part of the Open to Interpretation Collection, which explores the ways in which we handle conflict and communicate (or don’t) with those around us - and the impact that has on our personal emotional landscapes. In a culture where many of us are too busy to actually look inward and be honest with ourselves, it is that much harder to be honest with each other. And whether with those closest to us or strangers - when we don’t communicate, we leave it open to interpretation. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • wax, pastel, ink 21 x 17" The drawing was done in presence of the model through superimposition of multiple fast poses in one session. The drawing was later completed through emergence of the figure. This drawing is part of a series of drawings which will be used for the production of a short stop motion animation. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Picasso marble on a marble base 14 x 10 x 7" I chose the stone because of its interesting coloring while understanding it would be a challenge to carve. The mixture of colors, combination of elements it was composed of, and the dry brittle quality would make it difficult to control. I kept the form simple because of the complex design, yet I wanted the dynamic of the piece moving through space, inspired by the name of the stone, “Picasso,”: thus, the title Harlequin. I utilized power tools to avoid unwanted breaks. The process was direct carving meaning that I had no preconceived idea or model to refer to. Through both an intuitive process and calculated design solutions. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • color photoscreenprint 20 x 28 x 1" The Hudson River is an exciting place! This work celebrates the Hudson and is from a series of prints on rowing from the point of view of an involved participant on the river. The view is from the second seat from the in a four person (quad) scull and is of the rowers taking a break. The piece is from a series of prints on rowing from the point of view of a participant. The on-river iconic scene includes The Walkway Over the Hudson and the F.D.R. Mid-Hudson Bridge in the background. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photo collage on Canson Platine Fiber paper 22 x 17" Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil pastel on yupo 7.5 x 7.5" Using collage, I explore memory, perception and the layering of one upon the other. There is a layered history to the collage pieces used as they are remnants taken from another artwork. The nicks, smudges and reductive linework of these pieces are expanded upon, adding to the developing narrative. The chair is my motif of choice. As a ubiquitous presence in our day to day lives, it has rich metaphorical meaning. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on canvas 18 x 14 x 2" This scene speaks to me as the objects remind me of my mom who very recently died. She had a way of making things very "hygge" or cozy, for us. The things, or ideas of things-like tea and homemade raisin bread, surround me and feel like a tangible extension of her love. (The flowers are flowers I received when she passed, from my friends and relatives. She was flower fancier too, and I know she would have loved these.) It's been very healing to paint these things. Painting this scene helps me process my grief. It may all sound a bit cliche, but it still resonates. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media: acrylic, ink, pencil, oil pastel on canvas panel 13 x 16 x 1" Seeking to create deeper relationship with each viewer, no matter their experience or background, my visual language consistently relies upon the use of layers and color theory to invoke dimension and vibration. An abstract conceptual artist, my hope is to sustain conversations about our common needs and desires as a species, including companionship, safety, food, shelter, purpose, joy, understanding, compassion, wonder, belonging, comfort, and love. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 17.25 x 17.25 x 2" I have always enjoyed studying the many subtleties to be found in nature. Color variations, details in objects, as well as the juxtaposition of objects all interest me greatly. In addition, I find symbolism in art and the various moods created by lighting to be very intriguing. But most of all, it is the challenge of combining these and other elements in the painting process that attracts me to create. Bringing awareness to endangered and threatened species is very important to me. I’m continually striving to bring elements together that invoke a sense of thoughtfulness towards nature and how we affect it. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • charcoal, graphite, & ink collaged on gallery wrapped canvas 20 x 21 x 1.5" Finding Space boldly displays a figure I have been exploring for some time. Once timid and unsure, she is now settling into her environment, pushing against, and past, boundaries placed around her. While this piece did not begin as a true self-portrait, it grew into a solid representation of my own emergence as an artist. Reinventing myself in this next stage of life has brought me face-to-face with insecurity and self-doubt, but also revealed a strength and determination once forgotten. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • watercolor & pastel on paper 8.5 x 1.5 x .2" Persephone’s Garden series explores themes of Women’s identities and sacred space held by women. Using the metaphor of the garden before Persephone was abducted by Hades, and historically cared for by women of leisure and/or servitude, and reimagining it as as space for safety, growth, reinvention. Bordering on abstraction and recalling American Impressionism, color worlds are invented and discharged with subtlety and nuance. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Nihonga technique; minerals, pigments, color pencil, fools gold, lapis lazuli, graphite, charcoal, silver leaf on watercolor paper 8 x 8" Undercurrents, some connected others collide: Lines of communicating, suspended conversation. Seeking spaces between reminiscence and possibility. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • compressed charcoal & charcoal pencils on extra rough charcoal paper 12 x 9" The lady in this portrait is from an image that was handed to me during a discussion about Edwardian costume. The image was handed to me as I fell in love with the Edwardian hat and jacket, but it was the sitters eyes that compelled me to draw it. She had a bit of spunk and impishness in her glance, underneath that hat. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • cut & shredded magazine paper 11 x 14" This collage is part of a series about the condition of asylum seekers and the parallel with the religous pilgrims of the past. Both traveled great distances on foot. Both believed in the existence of sanctuary based on faith, the faith that their hope of salvation existed in a physical location. Both are confronted with perils of travel and some never arrive at their hoped for destinations. The parallels reveal that suffering is a part of the human condition historically and in modernity. We like to believe in the advent of modernity that such suffering should be a thing of the past. It's up to all of us to make that change to minimalize the suffering of our fellow beings. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 16 x 20 x 1" Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media on stretched wall-hung canvas 24 x 14 x 2" In Crossings, I address the notion of a fraught crossing from one place to another. This is a continuation of the work that I began a few years ago with Night Boats. The wall-hung pieces and mixed media sculptures are patched together from a variety of media and found objects, seemingly fragile yet in fact resilient. They represent the resourcefulness and determination needed in order to undertake a perilous voyage into the unknown. Crossings also alludes to more symbolic voyages into the unknown. Physical gaps in the work, that appear to be filled with light or with or with stormy darkness, are spanned by delicate threads and illusions. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic painting 20 x 1.5 x 24" A blank canvas provides an opportunity to build connections between the chaos of the outside world and the deep human response it evokes. Sometimes my artwork is quite literal, capturing the light and beauty of a particular moment. Moving away from that moment, the work evolves into a more abstract representation of memory and emotion. I've always sought solace in nature, and as a Master Gardener and beekeeper, I've witnessed the delicate balance between ecosystems and the importance of conserving natural resources. I feel compelled to capture the beauty of this interdependence in a meaningful and expressive way, communicating the importance of environmental sustainability. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • 35 mm full-frame digital camera, 7-14 wide angle lens 16 x 20 x 1" I like to capture the fast-paced dynamics of New York City street life. What is exciting and energizes me is how spontaneous the process is, and unpredictable people are. Some are completely unaware of being photographed, some may see me and pose and wave, others may be hostile to what they consider an intrusion. On occasion, I may stop and ask someone if they would let me take their photo. I look for places with interesting forms, light, and street geometry for a good background to the people I photograph. What attracts me to photograph someone may be an expression, an action, details, colors or reflections. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media on textile; screen-printed & machine-stitched 20 x 20" After five years of persistent statewide drought, rampant wildfires seemed to consume much of the formerly spectacular California landscape. Shortly thereafter the rains came, and formerly barren areas could not absorb the water. Such a paradox… too little water, too much water, in just three months’ time. Climate change is real. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on cradled wood panel 14 x 11" My practice as an artist grows from the direct observation and immersion of drawing on location, where I uncover the energy and memories that linger. The drawings become a point of departure for my abstract paintings, where I engage with the shapes between form, exposing the residual layers of sensation. Abandoned industrial spaces are of particular interest to me, as the grounds of these former factories are healed by the weeds and shrubs of ruderal growth and the forces of nature, which slowly transform toxic materials back to the earth. Ruderal Growth 1 is part of a series based on the abandoned brick factories of the Hudson Valley area of New York State. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 18 x 14 x 1.5" My intent was to capture the chaos of the overgrown garden, exploring the various textures and rhythms of the plants. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • limited edition digital photo on fine art paper, signed on front 11 x 9 x 1.5" In Tales of a Consulting Detective, Sherlock Holmes said: “You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear.” I take my camera out. I may choose a subject; I may think “that would make a great picture”; I may visit a new place or one I’ve seen before. We have the technology to immediately capture whatever is in front of us. The challenge is for people to slow down; to question whether there is only one way to look at something; and to search for new meaning in something they may have seen before. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • graphite, watercolor, charcoal, & white ink 15 x 15 x 1.5" In the last three years, preoccupation with the covid virus made every decision more urgent and uncertain. Isolation and extreme personal loss made the Covid Series necessary. Some testimony of the physical and emotional barriers, as well as the confusion, and strange hope of these days seemed important to commit to paper. Each work in this series shows contemplative aspects of these personally difficult years for me, but sadly many other people may connect with these experiences also. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on canvas 20 x 20 x 1.5" Bloom is focused in the photosynthesis of planktons and the journey this species go through yearly from the Atlantic to the Arctic. I was very intrigued to find this natural phenomenon and see the similarities to my work style. I intentionally mimicked the density of the reproduction of plankton, which their presence changes the color of the water in which they live, leaving a colorful trail in the ocean. My approach is very intuitive; through the use of washed acrylics aligned around earthy colors, I create space-contained systems driven by shapes, layers, patterns and textures to represent the alge bloom. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic, latex, and graphite on canvas 24 x 24 x 1" Printemps is one of the first pieces I painted in my Abstracted Memories series.. It was painted in the spring of 2022 after being reunited with possessions of mine stored for decades. I had recently moved back to the East Coast from Northern California. The ensuing flood of emotions, memories and the sensations of touching objects and seeing again photographs of family members who had died even before the items were stored away, was overwhelming. Printemps is in honor of my grandmother Mamie, an artist and performer who raised me when I was a child and died when I was 14 years old. She sewed her dresses with beautiful fabrics, and loved flowers and bright colors. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • machine applique, hand embroidery 34 x 32.5" Magical Unicorn, is a fiber portrait, of a profoundly autistic girl. ASD is a disorder mostly comprised of males. Only 1 in 178 girls are diagnosed with Autism. I discussed with the mother, of the child pictured in this quilt, what she loves, her favorite colors, and composed artwork to represent her. People with profound ASD are infants in aging bodies that exhibit childlike behaviors and activities. While their innocence remains, it is a beautiful and heartbreaking journey to witness. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic paint, gold & copper leaves 24 x 24 x 1.5" Heavy Metal to me is a telling of who I used to be as an artist, and who I have become. Beginning over a decade ago with art deco and steampunk designs. Evolving now into my own personal style of maximalist abstract expressionist works. I used to be overly concerned about perfection, and fine lines, where now I can embrace an unfinished, rustic background. There is perfection in imperfection. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil painting on wood panel 11 x 14 x .75" This work is part of my Military Spouse Project. One of two bodies of work currently in production, its focus is documenting and honoring our military spouses. The project was initially conceived to thank spouses who participated in my other project; Disrupted Military Portraits. However, these traditional portraits quickly took on a life of their own and I can see this work continuing into the future. As a military spouse myself, I see this as a way to give back to our unique community through artistic representation. • archival paper, photographs, & adhesive 8 x 9.75 x 1.5" Nature-Tecture #3 joins together architectural forms with plant life – thus the play on words in the title. As the third in this Nature-Tecture series, which searches for harmony between that which is manmade and the natural world, this piece pushes further on than its predecessors (#1 and #2), Here, I felt compelled to place the plants bursting out from behind these manmade forms. For me, they send a message: that they are present, vital, growing. This begs the question: What are we doing to protect plants, animals, oceans – and ourselves? And, what is preventing us from taking the action necessary to secure the health of our planet? Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 18 x 18 x 1.5" Through my paintings, I’ve become attentive to the splendid drama of my everyday world. How the wind can create a ripple in a pond, a flock of birds descending on a field, or how sunlight can illuminate the side of a building are small miracles that happen all around us. In my latest series of oil paintings called Old Souls, I have paid homage to the trees I’m familiar with as I progress through my daily life and work. I thought of these paintings more as portraits of friends than as landscape paintings. I believe nature is intertwined with our lives and has an awareness of our human activity. I find this feeling most prevalent with trees. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 16 x 20 x .75" A figure in hot pinks stares with wide eyes in disbelief. What is she looking at? Is it the viewer? This expression of saturated emotion insights a real, tangible feeling within us, as the viewer. The space, however, is pixelated like a quilt stitched together. Is this scene 2-dimensional, patched together with pieces of fabric? Or has the figure somehow morphed this flat object into a 3-dimensional space to exist within? Is she stuck there? Is she asking you to help her get out?

  • silver solder & copper over wood 104 x 78 x 8" This sculpture is a data visualization of Anne's workload during the COVID lockdown. Anne is the mother of two young children, and during COVID she took on the roles of schoolteacher and household manager for her family of four who were now in the house every day, all the time. Stay-at-home parenting is a rigorous undertaking in the best of circumstances, and with no in-person school or childcare help, it became an all-consuming grind. In Anne’s sculpture, all work hours are unpaid. Larger silver spheres represent a full hour of unpaid labor and smaller spheres represent a half hour of unpaid labor. The very few empty spaces represent an hour when Anne was not working.

  • acrylics on mixed media paper mounted to wooden cradle 7 x 7 1.25" Abstract art for me is a chance to invoke a wild, primal and unconventional style of expression full of color. I start each work with no real direction or plan and as the paint hits the canvas the story comes to life. Whether that story comes from a life experience or something affecting the world today, each work will become a window into a narrative once completed. My wish for whomever glances upon my art is to temporarily leave the conventional and glance into a gateway of a vibrant story.
