  • Oil on Canvas Floating on Hope Size: 18 x 36 Framed Size: 19 x 37 I find calm and comfort in the shapes used Mid-century art, particularly by Calder in his mobiles. This is why I am drawn to the leave of the eucalyptus. After a long series of realist still-lifes of these beauties, I began to play with them in the abstract. Here they are floating on what I imagine are good feelings and hope. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • From Scratch
oil painting on gallery wrapped stretched canvas
    Size: 20 x 20
Shadows and refracted light always are always interesting to me. Both then themselves to exploring relationships between light and the curious things glass vessels do to optics. In this case, having created a beautiful loaf of bread with charred edges, casting lovely shadow on a tea towel, and the olive oil container morphing the image seen with in it inspired this work. 10 x 10" Lenten roses are among the first to awaken after the frigidity of winter. These were particularly welcome popping up through the snow. I had intended to refine this further. But after walking away from it for a bit, in what I had thought a somewhat unfinished state, I changed course. The impression imparts the fleetingness of these small wonders.

  • The Moon Rules the Night Watercolor Size: 6 x 4 Framed Size: 10 x 8 My work centers on spaces from my imagination that reflect reality but don’t represent it, much like a dream. While the scale of my watercolors, and therefore interaction with them, is small and personal, my approach to painting both small and large works is similar. Surface tension, brushstroke, and layers of color are equally important no matter the size of the work. I want you to participate when you look at my art - enter the image and place yourself in the space. While my early paintings were primarily figurative, for the most part figures have disappeared from my work. However, a sense of the figure’s presence remains - you are that presence. • Autumn View
    archival watercolor pigments and paper
    Size: 4 x 6
Autumn is my favorite season, so ultimately I end up doing some kind of Autumn painting every year. This painting really began with the stone wall, later morphing into a painting about Autumn. This Autumn painting is a bit different from previous ones I've done because there are no leaves, though there is a tree. The colors of Autumn leaves are featured in the painting but not the leaves themselves. This painting that was not about Autumn when I began it totally turned into another expression of my love for the season. I am not surprised!

6 x 4" This painting is about ordinary commonplace experiences. I have been frustrated more than once by finding that a place I need to go to is closed for repairs. Being a longtime midwesterner, there's a certain look the sky gets in winter when you can feel the snow coming, and a particular beauty to the bareness of the trees.

  • Red Sky In Morning I Digital Size of Piece: 8 x 8 x 1 Red Sky in Morning I was actually inspired by color. I really wanted to create a painting using bright red. The composition emerged from there. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

8 x 10 x .75" Autumn has always been my favorite season, so every autumn I, of course, must do a painting celebrating the season. I sometimes paint other seasons, but autumn is the only one I absolutely have to paint! The Chatter of Leaves evolved into tree trunks with multiple leaves falling everywhere and in my mind making the noises of crisp blowing and tumbling leaves. They speak to me each fall which is why the title The Chatter of Leaves popped into my head and was chosen.

  • Archival watercolor pigments on archival watercolor paper 6.25 x 4 in. Descending Darkness is a small watercolor created right after Russia invaded Ukraine. It was and is my reaction to this tragic and unnecessary situation for the people of Ukraine and consequently the stability of the entire world. Most of the time my work does not reflect world events, but this war was started for invented reasons, which really evoked a physical response in me that worked its way into my painting.

  • Watercolor 8 x 10" My small paintings center on spaces from my imagination that reflect reality but do not represent it, much like a surreal dream. I rarely know where a painting is going when I begin working. I am rather obsessed with the moon, architecture, texture, and pattern. I also enjoy mixing perspective. I want my small, intimate paintings to feel large. This painting, “Garden of the Harvest Moon”, is an abstraction of ideas incorporating my interests in the above areas.

  • watercolor 10 x 8 x .75" Sometimes I have a specific idea for a painting before I begin and sometimes I do not. "Night Whisper" is one where I had no idea when I began where it would end up. This rather surreal watercolor took off on its own. I had no idea the column with the creepy plant-like thing would become the focus of this painting. I also had not planned for daylight to appear in the darkness until I began to paint. My art is always an adventure even for me and I hope is enjoyed.

  • New Year’s Day Oil on Board, Plein Air painting in PA Size: 8 x 10 Oil paints have a delicious, buttery consistency, have various translucencies, and painting makes me happily meditative. Juilliard and Columbia-trained in piano, the arts, and dentistry, I feel that fine art overlaps with great music. Both can evoke feelings of awe, serenity, and happiness. I want to share these emotions through annual piano concerts and my paintings. Transcendent music and art inspires me. I admire work of Inness, Constable, Turner, Tiffany and Parrish. Whether plein air painting or working indoors with an underpainting, I try to capture inner peace and joy through a vista with an atmosphere of this moment. I envision spreading inner joy to a world of viewers. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Oil on canvas 8 x 6"
I love the variety and creative energy of the city but also the hidden places and quiet moments that appear serendipitously in my rambles around the city. My paintings often incorporate dramatic light and perspective to expose the craft and subtle colors of easily overlooked elements of the urban environment. For example, Drain Pipe, Henry Hudson Parkway is a detail of a structure I have painted many times in many lights. This small painting captures a quiet sunset moment under the parkway looking across the river.

    24 x 18 x 1.5"
Sun on Parkway Arch is one of a series of paintings made in 2022 to 2023 depicting the Henry Hudson Parkway, both within context of the surrounding park and river, and as a stand-alone structure. I was drawn to this particular perspective by the sunlight glancing off the top of the arch and the contrasting shadowed interior, which created a glorious range of warm and cool blues, greens and purples. The curves and lines also created an almost abstract image which I loved.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

    oil on panel painting
    Size: 20 x 16
This bridge in Central Park captured my imagination due to its incredible artistry and the wonderful play of light and color on the aging surface. The strong slanting light and elimination of surrounding foliage serve to bring the railing into stark focus and enhance the color.

  • oil on panel 12 x 16" I live near the Hudson River and have walked along it in every season and kind of light. One day I saw this pier from an angle that reminded me of Magritte – so how could I resist it? There were many other things I loved about this image - the contrast of textures in the metal pier, rough stone wall and tall grasses; the glow of the sand uncovered by the tide; and the distant skyline. I used glazes to create the glowing sand, and emphasized the horizontal constructions to contrast with the organic foliage form.

  • Unconscious Ascent
    soft pastel on sanded paper
    Size: 16 x 12
Unconscious Ascent expresses a time when your mind has suspended reality, a time of transition that is impossible to replay. It is that fleeting moment when one questions if it is a dream or something beyond. Fragmented elements move in and out of focus with a veil-like quality, beseeching further exploration.

  • 35mm digital image 18 x 12 in. w/frame 26 x 20 in.   The image titled 489 was produced from a 35mm digital image. Other than saving it a jpg no other actions took place in Photoshop. The image was captured on an early July morning at a local kayak shop. The bright, colorful design shows the reflection of a rack of kayaks on the side of a glossy black box trailer. I could not resist the playful, abstract shapes that changed forms with every step as I approached. The pattern of the black panel rivets creates a repeating rhythm to the design.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • collage on clayboard with sgraffito 16.5 x 13.5" I used to have students render statues. As demonstrations, I started using the truncated female torso in my own work, repeating variations in different media- watercolor, oil pastel, woodblock printing, and more. This reflected thoughts about aging- how a statue can lose parts over long periods of time. What may once have been adulated in youth has changed and is now attractive in very different ways. This art piece uses the same torso shape repeated throughout the series, and adds a portion of a cotton lace curtain from my first home that finally fell apart. It is dipped in encaustic wax, which preserves it. The line work scratched in the clayboard suggests breaking of bonds or barriers.

  • printmaking 5.25 x 6" Printmaking has a huge number of subcategories. Among other techniques, I enjoy both carving plates (as in linoleum, gomuban or woodblock) and inscribing them (as on metal or plexiglas). Then of course, next comes printing them in varied colors, combinations or papers, sometimes adding another medium, such as watercolor. Inspirations are varied, often reflecting the moment of time, place and activity, whether domestic, nature, sport or music. Engaging in artistic reflection is a way to improve observation, capture a memory, and invite a viewer to see through one's eyes. • monoprint with watercolor 18 x 24"   Loie Fuller was a pioneer modern dancer, or “free dance,” as it was called in early days. She was born Marie Louise Fuller in 1862 in my home state of Illinois and renamed herself “Loie” at age 16. She was filmed in 1902, perhaps the first film of a dancer. I imagined her perhaps in a mirror, or doing a duet with herself, in this monoprint. This print, on Hannemuhle paper, was created from a plexiglass plate with a dremel, inked as an intaglio print and subsequently hand watercolored. It is an homage to Ms. Fuller, her history, the joy of dance and the dancing days of my youth- Jill Cliffer-Baratta   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Standing Firm4 Acrylic on Canvas Size: 24 x 20" Jill Cliffer Baratta, MFA has been a member, volunteer and officer of NAWA since 2011. Visiting Brookgreen Gardens in 2023, attending a South Carolina Chapter meeting, Jill wandered the gardens. The land was donated by sculptor and NAWA member Anna Hyatt Huntington and her husband in 1931, so it took on significance beyond the beauty of the expansive estate. The bronze series “Circle of Life, Spring” caught the eye. The acrylic painting, entitled “Standing Firm,” is an interpretation of this figure, created by Harold “Tuck” Langland in 2001, and donated to the park. The image, backed by Spanish moss, took on special meaning as Jill’s daughter was just moving to the southern U.S., and is a yoga instructor. Further insight emerged as the politics of the country caused so much upheaval that the title of the painting, “Standing Firm” took on additional and deeper meaning. Borrowing the lake house of a friend, and taking time away from the usual, a group of my friends gathered on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, for fun and adventure. This image of the house reflected in the lake, is the view from a kayak. The friends (not shown but having stayed together in the house) are those from high school, and the reflections may represent how time breaks up the memories, as well as how moving water, like time, breaks up the reflections. The more friends, the more broken memories may be stitched back together, especially when some go back to elementary school!

  • unique photo transfer technique with intaglio print 21 x 17" My husband and I went to a fundraiser for the Litchfield Jazz Camp in Connecticut, and there was a young man playing with the adults in the ensemble that was entertaining. I was so impressed with his playing that I took a few photos. I have used this unique photo transfer technique, which mimics aquatint (sort of- not purely of course), because I like the texture and unpredictability of it. I created a drypoint intaglio plate to superimpose over the photo transfer, and this is the result. There is jazz music around me all the time, so musical themes are some of the subject matter in my artwork. I enjoy the challenge of showing something purely aural in a visual way.

    13 x 13"
I work intuitively, building up and sanding away many layers of paint, collage, and mark-making until I feel the painting is resolved. Bermuda Triangle was created during the pandemic at a time of high stress and anxiety. As with all my work, this piece is a reflection of my emotional landscape at the time. My creative process is a search for truth, but also for peace and resolution.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • Educator Statement As a Signature Member of the National Association of Women Artists and an educator at the Dartmouth Cultural Center I had the good fortune of participating in this inaugural educational event. The DCC students, Iria DeValles-Vieira, Beth Russo, and Robert Vesprini, accepted the challenge of creating a group artwork. Each of them created two pieces that narrate their interest in the oceans that are part of our everyday life. They started the project in mid-September and completed the work in mid-December. Working in class under my direction and on in their studios as a team. Weekly feedback and critique fuel the process until all were happy with the result. Over the twelve weeks they planned, executed, and delivered these amazing efforts. Each piece uses a construction tube as a substrate that was painted, sanded, decoupaged, and covered with found objects of their choice. These artists have taken numerous abstract painting classes at the DCC. They are quite familiar with each other’s methods and thought processes. We hope to display the artwork series, Neptune’s Rabbit Hole, in various public venues over the next several months. Given the amount of work each artist dedicated to the project they are to be commended for their excellent work as individuals and as a team. I am delighted to have steered the ship on this Imaginary Playground voyage. Participants Names & Ages Beth Russo, over 60 Iria DeValles -Vieira, over 60 Robert Vesprini, over 60
  • acrylic 26 x 20 x 1.5" Three Sheets is an expression of how one hides behind a thin veil of imagined reality. It explores the impermanence of masking one's life artificially with intoxication. It has been said that an overstimulated being is Three Sheets to the wind, in essence, out of control. There are many ways one can be intoxicated. It could be love, emotional distress, fatigue, or just inebriation from consumption. As they say, what's your poison?

West End was inspired as I gazed out the window on a flight back from Ft Lauderdale on a crystal-clear morning. Leaving the urban jungle, the Atlantic Ocean consumed the horizon with a palette of deep blues and greens, sparkling like gems. As the West End of Grand Bahama Island came into view, the push and pull of tonal range increased creating an amazing design of shallows and depths. Inspired and in awe of this natural, abstract vision, West End was destined to be painted.

    Size: 16 x 20
Florida annually gets an influx of nutrient-laden dust from the Sahara, thousands of miles away. Usually it means red dust on my porch rails, but on this particular evening it tinted the sky. Events like this remind us of the the complexities of relationships within the natural world, and the importance to conserve and honor these systems that we are only beginning to understand.

  • Stoneware 30 x 20" I use pictorial imagery of various cultures, throughout history, by utilizing myths, religious and secular symbols in my work. The images are not literal, but symbolic expressions of prevailing ideas and thoughts about current issues in the world. I am recently exploring Global Warming and mass extinctions of flora and fauna across the world. Looking through the window of history and comparing current social issues with the past, I strive to provoke thoughtful consideration and awareness of diverse cultures in the world today. Size: 20 x 24
Traveling the ancient Tokaido Road in Japan, I approached the remnants of a temple and its damaged Torii Gate. A Torii Gate signifies the passage from human life to a spiritual realm. Although the gate was a ruin, it was still a powerful, ethereal symbol. With the misty horizon beyond the gate, I was transported on a spiritual journey.

  • Under Pressure Wood-fired stoneware, mink, cedar, iron Size of Piece: 22 x 20 x 8 Human Interference with Earth is the concept of this work. I grew up on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota where open pit, strip mining affected everyone's lives- positively and negatively. Today the scars of the iron ore mines still and forever will mark the earth. Today, I question mining methods and the impact on the earth's natural resources. In some instances, mining aids economic growth, but at what cost? Fresh water, air, wildlife and human habitat are under pressure. • Wolf Moon Soda fired stoneware Size of Piece: 18 x 18 x 16 I believe an artist must be deeply connected to the physical, metaphysical and spiritual world. Phenology of nature: Wolf Moon is one of a series of ceramic sculptures derived from direct observation of the night skies during different seasons. The Wolf Moon is a winter moon named by the Ojibwe. The concept of this moon is my direct observation contrasted with historical beliefs and the myths describing the phases of the moon. The ethereal beauty and emotive connection to nature is my inspiration. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
